With their comic Minor Threats, actor and comedian Patton Oswalt and TV writer Jordan Blum found unexpected success with their title focused on the travails of underappreciated and overlooked D-list villains.
Now, a background character in the comic that is about background villains is getting his moment in the spotlight.
From the World of Minor Threats: Barfly teams up the duo, who created Hulu’s stop-motion Marvel series M.O.D.O.K., with comics author Kyle Starks and artist Ryan Browne, the illustrator of indie hit Eight Billion Genies. It tells a coming-of-age story about an insect monster-man, seen previously as a silent but oh-so-cool-looking humanoid fly in a punk jacket in certain panels of the Threat comics. Now, he is searching for his identity in the criminal underworld of Twilight City. Dark Horse Comics is publishing the four-issue mini-series starting in July.

With Tool on the road during the first several months of 2024, bassist Justin Chancellor expects the band to hit the studio to begin recording a follow-up to 2019’s Fear Inoculum in the “second half of the year.”
Tool kick off a new US arena tour on Wednesday (January 10th) in Baltimore (tickets available here), and then embark on a UK/European outing in late May.
Heavy Consequence recently caught up with Chancellor to talk about his project MTVoid (stay tuned for our full interview with Chancellor and bandmate Peter Mohamed), and he gave us a bit of insight into Tool’s plans for new music.
“Well, there’s a lot to be put together,” Chancellor remarked. “We have, as usual, loads of ideas, loads of stuff that didn’t get used — constantly writing new stuff. I write something, I immediately know it’s for Tool. It sounds the right way.

Patton Oswalt is Ok with making you squirm. After all, the actor and comic once performed a number called “The Cringe” on an episode of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” a title that could describe his approach to cracking people up.
“Real comedy comes from those moments,” Oswalt says. “I fully ascribe to Tracy Morgan’s maxim that ‘Cool is the enemy of funny.’ Cringe and awkwardness are real humanity, and that’s where the real funny stuff comes from.”
A comic’s comic adored by peers and audiences for wry, observational humor that often comes at his own expense, he’s also proven to be a skilled dramatic actor, recently playing Nixon’s hatchet man Charles Colson in the limited series “Gaslit.”
But his new film, “I Love My Dad,” ups the ante in discomfort while offering Oswalt a showcase role that is alternately hilarious and tragic. The film was written and directed by James Morosini,...

“M.O.D.O.K,” the gleefully bizarre Marvel animated series that debuted on Hulu last May, won’t be returning for a sophomore season, TheWrap has learned.
While this might seem like a surprise to some that the show is coming to a close after only 10 episodes, it was more or less a foregone conclusion. “M.O.D.O.K” was ordered as part of a suite of animated shows, by former Marvel Television executive Jeph Loeb. These shows, which also included “Hit Monkey,” “Howard the Duck” and “Tigra and Dazzler,” were meant to eventually come together for a miniseries called “The Offenders.” (This echoed the strategy Loeb employed with the Netflix series like “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones.” Those combined for a miniseries called “The Defenders.”)

Hulu has struggled to find success with its properties from Marvel, which is one of the main brands on Disney+, the Walt Disney Co.’s flagship streaming platform. The live-action series Helstrom was canceled after one season and two of the four planned animated series – Howard The Duck and Tigra & Dazzler – didn’t move forward. All the projects originated at Marvel Television, the defunct television division that was run by Jeph Loeb.

Marvel has had a successful run of TV dramas on Disney+ including WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki.
But could the comic book giant broaden its output across the Disney family with more series on sister platform Hulu? That’s certainly the intimation from Hulu head of scripted content Jordan Helman.
The streamer’s most recent Marvel live-action series Helstrom was canceled after one season and two of the four planned animated series – Howard The Duck and Tigra & Dazzler – did not move forward.
But Helman told Deadline, “Marvel continues to be an incredibly important partner and one of the biggest generators of content within the Disney ecosystem so we’re excited about the possibility of what may lie in the future with regards to the Hulu/Marvel relationship.”
He admitted that he hasn’t engaged in conversations with Marvel Studios and its chief Kevin Feige, but added,...

Modok is a D-list supervillain, but Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt, co-creators of the upcoming Hulu adult animated comedy bearing the Marvel character’s namesake, are hoping you’ll root for their grotesque underdog because, somewhere along the line, you’ve also had your plans to take over the world thwarted.
Blum, who is known for his work on “American Dad,” and Oswalt, the stand-up comedian, writer, producer, actor and voice star of “Ratatouille,” “Happy!” and “The Goldbergs,” are making their grand entrances into the Marvelverse as executive producers and writers with “Marvel’s “Modok”. In doing so, they’re banking on their pioneering choice of stop motion style and centering a superhero show entirely on an evil, middle-aged genius to break free from the standard comic-book adaptation blueprint.

Jordan Blum, the creator and showrunner of Marvel’s animated series M.O.D.O.K. for Hulu, is one of the rare Marvel comic fans so dedicated that he was a little disappointed when the announced “Captain America: Serpent Society” film ended up being a joke-y cover-up title for Captain America: Civil War.
“I was probably the one person who was let down,” Blum tells Den of Geek. “I love the Civil War story, but I was like ‘Yes, finally, the Serpent Society! Number one Serpent Society fan over here.’”
Blum comes across his Marvel fandom honestly. The writer’s father learned English from reading Marvel comics to a young Jordan in his crib. There are pictures of Blum as a child in a high chair holding his first Captain America comic issues. Over the years, Blum has developed and maintained his passion for Marvel comics, and the character of M.O.D.

This Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. review contains no spoilers.
Marvel has already had a big year on the small screen through their Disney+ offerings WandaVision and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, but on the heels of the latter’s finale comes a strange, quirky show to Hulu.
Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. takes the humor of Deadpool, the weirdness of WandaVision, and a small dash of the animation style from Wallace & Gromit to create something…even stranger than it sounds. This adult animated series comes in part from the brains behind Robot Chicken, which does a lot to explain how those three things can be mashed together–to varying degrees of success.
The conceit behind the series is that M.O.D.O.K. (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing), who has long been a part of the Marvel comics universe, has a family that lives in the suburbs.

Ahead of its second season premiere later this year, Hulu’s “Animaniacs” reboot is already getting renewed for a third season, announced the Disney-owned streaming service at its Television Critics Assn. press tour day.

Steven Spielberg is continuing on as executive producer of “Animaniacs,” with Sam Register, President, Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios, Amblin Television Co-Presidents Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey also executive producing. I feel like we’ve come a long way in our acceptance of superhero concepts as a society. The X-Men movies were so reluctant to include giant robots until they were six movies in and to this day, we haven’t seen Wolverine wear his trademark yellow tights on the big screen. We’re ready for that now and we’re ready for Galactus and we’re ready for a space horse who can pick up Thor’s hammer and so on.
Even as the main villain of the new Avengers video game, Modok is always going to be a hard sell. While he’s a fearsome foe, incredibly intelligent, and powerful, he’s also a funky-looking giant head with normal-sized limbs dangling around with little use. He’s the epitome of bizarre comic book designs and if you’re going to give him a spotlight, you’re going to...

Karim Zreik, Marvel TV Studios Svp Original Programming & Production added in a statement today: “Patton and Jordan have done a phenomenal job...

Jeph Loeb Discusses Developing More Adult-Oriented Animated Marvel Shows for Hulu That Push the Wall
Earlier this year it was announced that Marvel and Hulu were developing a series of animated shows that consist of Marvel’s Howard the Duck, Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K., Marvel’s Hit-Monkey, and Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show. Those will all lead up to a team-up special called Marvel’s The Offenders.
These shows will have more mature and adult-oriented content, and in a recent interview with Deadline, Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb teases the direction that they are taking as they develop these shows. He explains:
"I’m a huge Archer fan, and Dan Buckley, who’s the president of all things other than the studio here at Marvel, and I started talking about how we have this mutual love of animation and also pushing that wall. The idea of doing something that was more adult, some of which was started with the idea of doing Deadpool animated.

As you all know by now, Marvel and Hulu have teamed up to bring us a series of animated shows that include Howard the Duck, Hit-Monkey, Tigra & Dazzler Show, and M.O.D.O.K. Those shows would then lead up to a special called The Offenders.
When the shows were announced, we learned that Patton Oswalt would be one of the writers of M.O.D.O.K., but it turns out that he’ll have another part to play in the creation of the animated series as well. The actor recently appeared on Late Night with Seth Myers and it’s there he revealed that he will also be providing the voice for the title character!
“I’m gonna be voicing him. He is a supervillain, he has superintelligence, he has a forehead beam, he has all this technology. But, he is not on the A-level of Doctor Doom and the Red Skull.

Last week Marvel and Hulu announced that they were producing a number of animated series for Howard the Duck, M.O.D.O.K., Hit-Monkey, and Tigra & Dazzler Show. Those shows would build to a standalone team-up special called The Offenders.
One of the projects that a lot of fans are excited about is Howard The Duck which is being developed Kevin Smith and Dave Willis. Smith recently talked to Marvel.com about the series and you can tell that he’s excited about it:
“The times we’re living in deserve an orator who can identify all the quacks in the system – a straight-shooter who won’t leave us holding the bill. Thanks to Marvel & Hulu, I get to do fowl things to one of my all-time favorite comic book characters in animation! Let’s be honest: I’m not talented enough to handle any of the Avengers, but...

At the Television Critics Association 2019 Winter Press Tour; Hulu, in association with Marvel Television, announced that they will be bringing 4 new adult animated shows and a special to the Hulu Originals lineup. Based on popular, or maybe not so popular characters from marvel fandom we will get shows for Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K, Marvel’s Hit-Monkey, Marvel’s Tigra and Dazzler show & Marvel’s Howard the Duck. The four shows will eventually culminate in a special series titled Marvel’s The offenders.
In hulus press release:
The oddest one of this lineup to me is this villain character. Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing) centers around an egomaniacal supervillain with a really big head and a really little body, who struggles to maintain control of his evil organization and his demanding family. Writers Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt will also...

Well, now we have our first official look at what we can expect from the shows in terms of style and character design and I’m not really that impressed. I was hoping that we’d get some top-quality designs and art, but this does not inspire much confidence.
Hopefully, the show will at least have some good writing, which will come from the likes of Kevin Smith, Patton Oswalt, Chelsea Handler, Erica Rivinoja, Dave Willis, and more.
Here are the details that have been...
