Shannon Sharpe arrives promptly at noon at the South Beverly Grill, a short drive from his home in Holmby Hills. He is 6-foot-2 and 230 pounds, a wall of muscle sheathed in black athleisure wear. He slides into his favorite booth, orders a cranberry ginger ale and offers a hello — friendly but guarded — to an awaiting journalist.
It’s usually Sharpe asking the questions — whether on his blockbuster podcasts Club Shay Shay (3.17 million YouTube subscribers) and Nightcap (1.26 million subscribers) or on ESPN’s First Take, where through the NFL season he spars good-naturedly with host Stephen A. Smith.
Sharpe, who turns 56 on June 26, shot to fame as a tight end for the Denver Broncos. He’s an NFL Hall of Famer and three-time Super Bowl champ. But his other calling, it turns out, is talking — about sports, yes, but about many other things, too, from social issues to politics to celebrity gossip.

Unlike a number of recent, high-profile events, last week’s 2024 Webby Awards were not disrupted by protests over Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas. There were no demonstrators visible outside of the event’s Cipriani Wall Street venue in Manhattan, and none of the five-word acceptance speeches delivered onstage on May 13 referenced the Gaza conflict.
But that doesn’t mean the evening was free from hot-button political issues.
Webbys president Claire Graves spoke about the “assault on reproductive rights all over this country” as she introduced Phenomenal Media CEO Meena Harris, who also happens to be Vice President Kamala Harris’ niece, who spoke about abortion restrictions implemented since Roe v. Wade was overturned, as she presented an award to the Plan C documentary about the initiative to increase access to abortion pills.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was also among this year’s winners, receiving an award for her “Governor Barbie” social videos.

At this year’s Brandcast, YouTube wanted advertisers to know: When it comes to building fan fervor around content, it’s not just a match for traditional TV networks—it’s better.
“The magic of YouTube isn’t just about our scale, or our captivating content, or viral hits,” CEO Neal Mohan told a live audience at the Lincoln Center in New York City. “It’s that we bring everything together in a way you won’t find anywhere else. There’s only one place where you can find a truly unique connection to fans. There’s only one place where you can reach every audience you care about. There’s only one YouTube.”
In this new age of Upfronts-timed Brandcasts, YouTube has always leaned heavily into the numbers. This year, it highlighted how, according to Nielsen, it’s been the #1 most-watched streaming service on living room TVs for 17 months straight–and how,...

If there has been a consistent message from YouTube over the past couple of years, it has been built around its vast ecosystem of creators. More recently, that has been joined by artificial intelligence, with the Google-owned video platform rolling out generative AI tools for creators, and for advertising partners.
So it is no shock that creators and AI were two hot topics of conversation at YouTube’s annual Brandcast upfront event Wednesday evening.
And while there were plenty of other surprises (performances from Billie Eilish and Finneas, and K-pop stars Stray Kids; a deal to stream WNBA games on YouTube TV; and a surprise appearance from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell), the creators, as usual, were the focus of the show.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Hall of Fame player-turned-media-personality Shannon Sharpe talked about the league’s embrace of YouTube and Sharpe’s experience as a creator.
The pair appeared onstage at YouTube’s Brandcast event for advertisers in New York.
Goodell said the 2023 season was “fantastic” for a number of reasons, but “the best thing was the launch of Yt. It was flawless … they brought our game to the fans in a fresh way.”
YouTube took over the rights to Sunday Ticket last year after it had been exclusive to DirecTV for 29 years, paying a reported $14 billion in the deal. The tech giant incorporated product innovations like Multiview and also integrated creators into behind-the-scenes programming by its media arm.

YouTube’s message to Madison Avenue: The video giant isn’t like traditional TV — it’s bigger, with literally billions of viewers, and better at targeting relevant audiences.
At its annual Brandcast event, held Wednesday during the TV biz’s upfronts week, YouTube drilled home massive scale. On average, viewers watch more than 1 billion hours of content on TV screens daily. According to Nielsen’s total TV and streaming report for the U.S., YouTube has had the No. 1 share in streaming watch-time every month on American TVs since February 2023.

Insecure actress Amanda Seales has addressed claims that she was difficult to work with on the HBO comedy-drama and shared her side of the story on her beef with the show’s star and creator, Issa Rae. Speaking on the latest episode of former footballer Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, Seales shot down claims that she was a “mean girl” on the Emmy-nominated series. Instead, she blamed Rae for not “protecting” her when it came to behind-the-scenes conflicts. “There’s a whole narrative that is completely false that people keep spinning. They keep saying, you know, that I’m this mean girl on this set, that I harmed these people on this set,” Seales said, per Decider. “I just want to point out something very basic. How can I be a mean girl on a set that ain’t my set? How?” she continued. “It’s your show.

“It all started with ‘Dancing with the Stars’,” says NFL Hall of Fame player DeMarcus Ware while discussing his latest venture into reality TV. He performed as Koala in Wednesday night’s “Transformers” episode of “The Masked Singer.” “Just getting uncomfortable doing something that you’ve never done before and making it to the end. Then, what really sparked my interest was when I sang “The National Anthem” at the Hall of Fame Game. I was like, ‘Okay, you’ve got a little bit of vocals.'” Watch his exclusive video interview with Gold Derby senior editor Denton Davidson above.
As Koala, DeMarcus sang “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears on “Transformers Night.” Following Lovebird’s elimination, Koala was the second voted out in the episode. Former “The Bachelor” star Colton Underwood knows the symbolism of his being unmasked on a reality show — in this case, “The Masked Singer” — is huge. Underwood, a former pro football player who made history as the first star of “The Bachelor” to come out as gay, was one of two celebrities to be revealed on Wednesday night’s show — the other being another ex-NFL player, the Hall of Fame, former pro football linebacker DeMarcus Ware.

This weekend, the biggest sporting event on the Stateside calendar, the Super Bowl, went down between the San Francisco 49ers and the Taylor Swiftie… Sorry (checks notes), Kansas City Chiefs. And with a massive guaranteed TV audience, that naturally meant companies shelling out not just $7 million for 30 seconds of precious airtime, but millions more to secure celebrity faces and guarantee viewers/clicks. As is usual these days, most of the ads went up days before the event itself, or the spots linked to longer versions online. Here is a roundup of our favourites…

Actress Mo’Nique claimed she has been “blackballed” from the entertainment industry by Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey – and she said she has an audio tape of Perry stating she is “difficult to work with.”
In an interview with football legend Shannon Sharpe on his podcast Club Shay Shay, Mo’Nique reveals she recorded a conversation over the phone between herself and Perry.
After the recorded phone call, Mo’Nique stated that Perry told singer Stephanie Mills he would only meet with Mo’Nique if her husband, Sidney Hicks, was not present. Perry requested a public apology from Mo’Nique and said that he and Oprah had nothing to do with the downfall of her career.
The drama between Mo’Nique, Perry and Winfrey dates back to 2009.

Mo’Nique delivered a viral interview on the “Club Shay Shay” podcast that garnered nearly five million views in 24 hours due to the Oscar-winning comedian’s blunt comments while talking about previous public spats with the likes of Tyler Perry, Netflix, Oprah Winfrey and more. In one of the podcast’s most quoted moments, Mo’Nique declared that her career might’ve been as successful as that of fellow comic Melissa McCarthy had she been given equal opportunities as her white contemporaries.
“If I was a white woman, do you know what my name would be? Melissa McCarthy,” Mo’Nique told host Shannon Sharpe. “If I was a white woman, my name would be Melissa McCarthy. Same track record! Five-year sitcom in syndication. The opportunities are not the same.”
McCarthy starred on the CBS sitcom “Mike and Molly” for six seasons and won an Emmy for outstanding actress in a comedy series.

Mo’Nique praised fellow actress Taraji P. Henson this week for raising awareness about Hollywood’s pay inequality for Black women but also recalled her own attempts to shed light on the issue over a decade ago.
“It was painful to watch,” Mo’Nique told Club Shay Shay host Shannon Sharpe of Henson’s December interview with Gayle King.
“I’m just tired of working so hard, being gracious at what I do [and] getting paid a fraction of the cost,” a tearful Henson said in an interview that dominated headlines. “I’m tired of hearing my sisters say the same thing over and over.”
Mo’Nique said this week she sympathized with Henson’s words but noted they weren’t unfamiliar. “Taraji and I had a conversation over a decade ago in my trailer when I was doing The Mo’Nique Show.”

Paul Mescal and Timothée Chalamet have been the targets of some of the wildest internet theories about celebs. From worshiping Satan to being members of the Illuminati and selling their souls for fame, public figures, especially those in entertainment, are probably used to reading absurd stories about themselves. While most of these stories are unintelligible and quite outrageous to believe, conspiracy theorists haven’t been too willing to quit fabricating fables; hence, crazy theories about famous people continue to thrive and spread. Events like Katt Williams’ interview on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast in January 2024 lend credence to some...

Dave Chappelle has shared his thoughts on Katt Williams’ recent “Club Shay Shay” interview, in which Williams insults other Black comedians.
Chappelle spoke about Williams on stage at MonDERAYS at the Hollywood Improv on Friday, an event hosted by comedian DeRay Davis. Although Chappelle’s sets are known for their strict no-phone policy, segments of his set where the comedian criticizes Williams have circulated on social media.
“What part of the game is this? He only ethered niggas. He didn’t say anything about any of these white boys. None of these white boys function like that,” Chappelle said of Williams during his set. “Katt is one of the best painters in the game. So why are you drawing ugly pictures of us? Stop.”
On Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast, Williams made comments about Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, Cedric the Entertainer, Tiffany Haddish and Steve Harvey, among others.

Everyone is still talking about Katt Williams’ interview on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast, including Saturday Night Live.
The NBC sketch show poked fun at the interview, providing an eight-hour “extended cut” with Ego Nwodim posing as the comedian.
“Three things are true about me. I am 5’3, I have never told a lie, and I am 6’3,” she (as Williams) tells Devon Walker’s Sharpe.
Giving a nod to Williams’ ongoing feud with Kevin Hart, which he reignited during the real podcast interview, Nwodim joked: “Look, Hollywood made Kevin Hart. Everyone knows Kevin Hart was made in the same factory where they make Teddy Grahams.”
Pushing back on skepticism from Walker, she questioned, “Then why the hell he smell like cinnamon?”
Nwodim’s version of Williams also took a swing at former President Obama, wondering why his name has “all vowels in it,” and insisting he wrote Obama’s slogan “Yes We Can.

In early January, comedian Katt Williams went on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast and took aim at Cedric the Entertainer for stealing “my very best joke.” The bit in question — which involved a pantomime of driving with music blasting — was first performed by Katt in a 1998 appearance on ComicView, then reproduced by Cedric (according to Katt) for his set in Spike Lee’s The Original Kings of Comedy. Cedric called the accusations “revisionist history” on Instagram.
We’ve been down this road many times before. For much of the 20th century, joke stealing was an open secret. “All comedians steal from all comedians,” the legend Stan Laurel once mused. Some of the biggest names in comedy did it. Milton Berle was so blatant in his joke stealing that he earned the nickname “The Thief of Bad Gags.” Richard Pryor admitted on The Tonight Show that he ripped off his comedy idols,...

Listening to three hours of Katt Williams can’t be easy, but some sound bites from a recent interview have made the waves, triggering a response from his targets, including Ice Cube, Kevin Hart and Cedric the Entertainer.
In Katt Williams’ viral interview on the Club Shay Shay podcast, the comedian targeted the aforementioned comedians with various claims. The most damning is that Williams maintains that his Friday After Next character, Money Mike (a pimp…), was originally supposed to be raped, which he insisted on cutting. Ice Cube, who produced, wrote and starred in the movie, had a different recollection, saying Williams didn’t have as much influence as he remembered. “We do what we feel…and if it was a rape scene it woulda been in the movie. There was no reason not to shoot it. But that’s not my style. I don’t even like that kind of sh*t in movies.

Ice Cube is responding to comments made by comedian, writer and actor Katt Williams about the pay, casting and an alleged rape scene in the Friday franchise.
The rapper and producer took to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, on Friday to address several statements made during Williams’ recent interview on former NFL star Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast. In a nine-minute video, Ice Cube said he had “a lot of love for Katt,” who “spoke up for me a lot,” but he “wanted to be clear to clarify some things.”
That includes denying he would film a rape scene after Williams told Sharpe that he had pushed for the removal of a sexual assault sequence from Friday After Next. “I would never shoot a rape scene in a movie, especially Friday, where you actually see this happening on camera. That ain’t my style,” Ice Cube said.

During the spring of 2023, comedian and actor Rickey Smiley appeared on Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe's show "Club Shay Shay" to talk about his career, and shocked comedy film fans everywhere when he claimed that he was originally cast as the pimp Money Mike in the final film of the "Friday" trilogy, "Friday After Next." The film was his feature acting debut, but Smiley would eventually play the role of the robber Santa Claus with Katt Williams portraying Money Mike. Williams had been an established comic since the 1990s, but "Friday After Next" was his breakthrough acting role that helped put him on the map before "Wild 'n Out" made him a household name.
A wholly original comedic voice with an untouchable ability to bring honesty to even the most flamboyant characters, when Katt Williams is cast in a role ... it feels like it was written for him.

Comedian Katt Williams has reignited his feud with comic/actor Kevin Hart, rolling out some highly inflammatory comments on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay YouTube show.
Hart has responded, calling the comments “sad,” but using the moment to tout his upcoming Netflix film.
Williams didn’t hold back on the Sharpe show.
“In 15 years in Hollywood, no one in Hollywood has a memory of going to a sold-out Kevin Hart show, there being a line for him, ever getting a standing ovation at any comedy club,” Williams said.
Later in the cast, Williams again took on Hart.
“For a five-year period, every single movie that Kevin Hart did was a movie that had been on my desk that all I had said was just, ‘Can we take some of this Stepin Fetchit shit out and then I can do it,'” said Williams.

Katt Williams’ recent interview on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast has gone viral for a handful of soundbites and revelations made by the comedian. Williams made his film debut playing Money Mike in the 2002 comedy “Friday After Next,” which he revealed originally included a sexual assault scene that he refused to participate in (via BuzzFeed). Williams pushed the studio to get the scene removed from the movie because “rape is never funny.” The comedian succeeded.
The scene in question centers on a confrontation between Money Mike and Terry Crews’ ex-convict Damon. As far as televised national anthems are concerned, we’ve certainly seen a wide range of performances over the past few decades, haven’t we? From Whitney Houston’s triumphant rendition at the 1991 Super Bowl to Roseanne Barr’s bastardization of the gift of sound at a 1990 Padres game, it’s easy to feel like we’ve heard it all at this point.
But every once in a while, if we’re lucky, a performance comes along that catches us by surprise, sweeps us off our feet and and restores our sense of wonder — a rendition so bold, so unexpected,...

While actress Gabrielle Union and retired NBA player Dwayne Wade were on a break, Wade fathered a child with another woman – and almost didn’t tell Union.

Dwyane Wade is opening up about how he tried to end things with Gabrielle Union after fathering a child with another woman — and how the two were able to reconcile.
Back in 2013, the couple — who had been dating since 2007 — were on a break, due to Union’s breakneck schedule with back-to-back acting roles. During that time, the Miami Heat star had an affair with “Basketball Wives” star Aja Metoyer, resulting in their son, Xavier, now 9 years old.
“I had to sit with my wife and have this conversation.”
In a new interview with Shannon Sharpe, Wade admitted that he “tried to break up” with Union rather than telling her the truth.

NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe has found a new home for his popular podcast, Club Shay Shay, in The Volume.
In addition to moving his podcast to The Volume, the digital network and podcasting hub founded by sports host Colin Cowherd, Sharpe’s company, Shay Shay Media, will jointly produce new programming with the network. The news comes after Sharpe’s exit from Undisputed, the Fox Sports debate show, in June, which had put his podcast back on the market.
“I’m excited to partner with my friend Colin Cowherd and the creative team at the Volume,” Sharpe said. “The Volume has built an amazing platform that is the right fit to help Shay Shay Media reach the next level. 10 August 2023 – Back with the kind of blockbuster announcement only he can deliver, DJ Khaled is set to return with his anxiously awaited 14th full-length LP and the most anticipated hip-hop event of 2023, Til Next Time, the first offering from his newly minted partnership We The Best Music Group/Def Jam Recordings.
“Supposed To Be Loved,” the massive first single from Til Next Time featuring superstar collaborators Lil Baby, Future and Lil Uzi Vert, is streaming everywhere this Friday.
Khaled personally broke the news (and the internet) by sharing a powerhouse trailer co-starring his sons Asahd and Aalam Tuck Khaled as well as his Queen Nicole Tuck Khaled. The clip opens with Khaled on the golf course where he starts his day. He sinks a seemingly impossible shot as the video intersperses vignettes from his life at the beach, on a yacht, on a horse, on the basketball court, a soccer field,...

ESPN may have laid off a couple dozen people in the past month, but it seems the network is not afraid of hiring, either.
“I want Shannon Sharpe on First Take and I am to get him,” said that show’s star, Stephen A. Smith on his podcast today, before revealing that ESPN brass are in negotiations with the hall-of-fame tight end who just recently left Fox.
“We are definitely talking to Shannon Sharpe,” Smith said. “The conversations are official, the reports have not been misnomers or misreports or anything like that. We are talking to him and I’m hopeful, very hopeful, very confident that ultimately we will be announcing sooner than later that he will be on First Take.”
Smith added that the decision was not ultimately his to make, but that he wanted to make clear publicly where he stood.

Skip Bayless has taken a jab at Charles Barkley after the former NBA star called the Fox Sports analyst an “idiot.” In return, the Undisputed co-host called Barkley a “clown.”
“Still chuckling over a clown calling me an idiot,” Bayless tweeted.
The tweet from Bayless after Barkley’s coverage of The Match earlier this week where Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson faced off Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce in a golf competition. Barkley took a swing at Bayless in a nod to Shannon Sharpe leaving the FS1 show and getting a contract buyout from the sports network.
“He’s the best tight end, it’s between him and Gronk as the best ever. And I don’t want to leave out Shannon Sharpe,” Barkley said. “I want one of those jobs where I can get a buyout for working with an idiot.”
Barkley later joked, “What do you think Ernie?...
