When Morgan Jay was cast on a prime-time TV show, he thought he’d finally gotten his big break.
A musical comic since 2007, Jay was sure his 2019 multi-episode appearance on NBC’s Bring the Funny would take his career from long nights and low pay to ticket sales and maybe even the hour-long comedy special of his dreams. While singing about the intricacies of modern dating and strumming along on guitar made fans of judges Chrissy Teigen and Kenan Thompson, it didn’t even “move the needle” on his career,...

In 2022, Amy Schumer starred in two different series. One was the long-delayed fifth season of her sketch comedy show Inside Amy Schumer, which had been absent for six years while Schumer focused on family and on other professional opportunities. The other was Hulu’s Life & Beth, a semi-autobiographical dramedy where Schumer played an unhappy woman who moved back into her childhood home in Long Island after the loss of her mother, trying for a fresh start to a life that hadn’t gone as she once hoped.

Exclusive: Four years after his fourth acclaimed comedy special The Great Depresh premiered on HBO, comedian Gary Gulman has set his latest, Born on Third Base, to debut on Max. Directed and produced by James Webb (Mark Normand: Soup to Nuts), his new hour will debut on the streaming platform this December.
In Born on Third Base, Gulman offers up his insights on a range of topics — from growing up poor to pretentious suffixes — all with a generous helping of his inventive humor and absurdism. While chronicling his childhood experiences with free school lunch programs and questionable dental care, and experiences with his eccentric Jewish American family, the stand-up makes an incisive swipe or two at billionaire-ism.
Written, performed, and executive produced by Gulman, the special’s other EPs are Conan O’Brien, Michael Bonfiglio, Brian Stern, Jeff Ross, and J.P. Buck.

Some people can’t, and maybe shouldn’t, go home again. But Amy Schumer proves beautifully in her new Hulu dramedy “Life & Beth” that she is not one of those people.
Schumer created, wrote, directed, executive produced and stars in this sincere and vulnerable dramedy that also shows her gift for getting personal as she did in her breakout 2015 film “Trainwreck.” She plays Beth (Schumer’s real middle name; her character in “Trainwreck” was named Amy), a Manhattanite who works at a seemingly enviable job selling wine to some of the city’s swankiest eateries, and living with her seemingly enviable boyfriend Matt (Kevin Kane), the successful champagne salesman at her company.
Matt is the life of the party, while Beth is much more introverted, something she simply accepts about their relationship. Then a shocking event in her family rocks her world, sending her on a trip back to...

A couple of years ago, comedian Gary Gulman went through one of the worst experiences of his life, opening up about it in HBO’s The Great Depresh.
In the comedy special, executive produced by Judd Apatow, Gulman speaks to his lifelong struggles with depression and anxiety, the rock bottom he hit, when he felt like he had lost his battle with mental illness, and the journey of recovery in which he engaged, to reclaim his life, get back up on stage, and tell others struggling that they are not alone.
For the comedian, writing and performing The Great Depresh initially felt like a big swing. Addressing his experiences with electroconvulsive therapy and psychiatric hospitals, Gulman feared early on that these subjects were perhaps too niche. “I was cautious about talking about that on stage, because I was not only concerned that audiences wouldn’t like it. I thought that...

“It was hard to admit I had been in the hospital,” admits comedian Gary Gulman in our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above). He continues, “Whenever I was told somebody had been in the hospital with mental illness, I had such pity. I went on stage one night and said ‘Who here has been recognized in the psych ward?’ Comedians are addicted to getting laughs. No matter how wild it seemed to admit that, when the laugh came in a major way, I couldn’t wait to say it again.”
Gulman’s latest comedy special “The Great Depresh” takes on the comic’s battle with depression. He explains, “I hadn’t done a lot of comedy which took any great courage. And actually, I think the really brave thing is getting through the illness and getting up every day. I’m exaggerating the depth of it, but I tell my odyssey.

All stand-up is curated confession, a chance for the person behind the mic to spill their guts but still shape their own narrative — to both tell the audience a story but also let us know how we should be thinking about it. We appreciate great comedians for their humor, of course, but also for their mastery. Like mentalists or con artists, stand-ups know how to pull our strings, how to put us at ease or discomfit us.

Stand-up comedian Gary Gulman has been having an extraordinary month thanks to the premiere of his HBO comedy special “The Great Depresh” and his cameo in Warner Bros.’ blockbuster comic book drama “Joker.” Gulman appears in the Todd Phillips-directed film as a stand-up comedian during a scene in which Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck attends a show and jots down notes while listening to Gulman’s set. Arthur laughs at inappropriate times because he suffers from Pseudobulbar affect (Pba), which causes uncontrollable laughing outbursts. Gulman recently told Collider he was unaware about this part of Phoenix’s character, so he was understandably distracted while filming his scene.

Starting October 10 — World Mental Health Day — HBO is adding mental health awareness disclaimers, called “bumpers”, to select episodes of its programming, including from shows like “Euphoria”, “Barry”, and “The Sopranos”. These bumpers will specifically occur before episodes that feature scenes of mental illness, as well as provide the phone number for a mental health hotline (1.833.HBO.Nami) for viewers to call for help with related issues.
The bumpers are all part of HBO’s new “It’s Ok” initiative and its aim to raise awareness and destigmatize the conversation surrounding mental health. According to a statement released by HBO, with It’s Ok, the cable network will “highlight a diversity of characters seen throughout the network’s series whose stories can help to normalize the conversation.”

HBO is adding brief messages to the beginning of select television episodes that include scenes of mental illness. The disclaimers, called “bumpers,” provide a mental health hotline to call if viewers are in need of help.

What is it about the complete lack of faith in the government and the consistent empowerment of white supremacists that tickles so many so-called liberal filmmakers? Last year it was director Adam McKay’s “Vice,” and now it’s “Mister America,” director Eric Notarnicola’s uncomfortable mockumentary presumably meant to parody modern political decay.
But because it is filmed like a documentary, with an uncomfortably convincing central performance by actor and co-writer Tim Heidecker, it almost does seem like a completely unqualified Tim really is running for San Bernardino district attorney. In today’s political climate, where a man was elected president of the United States just weeks after being accused of sexual harassment, it wouldn’t be unbelievable to watch a similarly unfit white guy, who also narrowly escaped criminal prosecution, confidently run for major office.

As the debate among comedians rages on over whether sensitivity and political correctness are hurting stand-up comedy, Gary Gulman says the real people who are getting too sensitive are comedians themselves.
“Audiences may be sensitive, but no one is more sensitive than a comedian,” Gulman said in an interview with TheWrap. “I spend my day overreacting to petty injustices, and my evenings railing — outraged — to strangers for a loss, most nights, a financial loss. I make less money than I spend on Uber and Lyft every night to share my anger with the audiences.”
Gulman weighed in on the topic as he’s promoting his new HBO stand-up special “The Great Depresh,” in which he reveals that for his entire life he found himself unable to speak his mind when it came to admitting he was struggling with severe depression.

When Gary Gulman says he’s never been better, he means it. The comedian is hitting a stride with his first stand-up special for HBO called “The Great Depresh,” not to mention a cameo role in the film “Joker” opening this weekend.
But his real achievement was overcoming severe depression, trips to the psychiatric ward and suicidal tendencies that followed him for years. With “The Great Depresh,” the comedian is still making jokes about grade school water fountains, vocabulary and why he loves millennials, but he’s doing it from a place of vulnerability and openness about his depression he’s never shown on stage before.
“I’m terrific. Honestly, a lot of people say never better, and they’re lying, and they’ve never been worse. But I can say that I’ve never been better because maybe I was so bad for so long, that it’s easy to be never better,...

South By Southwest (SXSW) has officially announced the lineup for SXSW Comedy, which will take place from March 10 - 17 in Austin, Texas. The festival's comedy programming has grown considerably since last year, with showcases, live podcast tapings and interactive shows stretching continuously throughout SXSW for the first time. The festival has announced 62 comedians scheduled to appear, nearly doubling last year's roster of performers.
Although SXSW is known for its music, film, and more recently, interactive portions of the festival, the comedy programming looks designed to delight both devoted comedy fans as well as casual observers. In fact, five of the comedians who landed on HuffPost Comedy's favorite comedy albums of 2011 list will be performing at the festival.
Part of the fun of SXSW Comedy is not knowing which performers will show up at which shows, although a full list of confirmed comedians has been released (and can be found in...
