HBO has acquired the Oscar-nominated documentary short “When We Were Bullies,” which will premiere on March 30.
“When We Were Bullies” focuses on director Jay Rosenblatt, as he tries to track down people from his 5th grade class to interview them about a severe bullying incident that occurred at their school 50 years ago. Using a mix of archival footage, animation and modern day interviews, Rosenblatt both reconstructs the event and comes to terms with his own sense of shame about what occurred.
“Everyone carries pain,” Rosenblatt narrates in the trailer for the short that HBO released. “Yet through that pain, I can see yours.”
In addition to directing, Rosenblatt wrote, produced and edited “When We Were Bullies.” The short is one of five nominees in the best documentary short category at the 94th Academy Awards.

Nickelodeon is expanding the porous and bubbly animated maritime sitcom universe of “SpongeBob SquarePants” with 52 new episodes across the franchise, including the flagship show that started it all and two recent Bikini Bottom additions, “Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years” and “The Patrick Star Show.” All three of the property’s series are currently in production at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, California.
“SpongeBob is the centerpiece of our franchise strategy to expand the worlds of our characters and grow our global reach even further,” Ramsey Naito, President of Nickelodeon Animation, said in a statement announcing the massive greenlight. “It’s a property that wins on every platform because the richness of the characters and the comedy intrinsic to the storytelling continue to appeal to so many fans around the world.”

The pickup is comprised of a 13-episode Season 13 back order for the original SpongeBob SquarePants series and 13 more episodes added to the first season of spinoff The Patrick Star Show — both on Nickelodeon — as well as a total of 26 episodes for CG-animated prequel Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years on Paramount+, a 13-episode Season 1 back order and a 13-episode Season 2 pickup.

Photo: 'The Patrick Star Show'/Hulu What Fans Can Look Forward to in ‘The Patrick Star Show’ For fans of Spongebob Squarepants, the name Patrick Star obviously rings a bell and they should be delighted to hear that Patrick Star is headlining his very own television show! I myself was over the moon to hear this news because I grew up watching ‘Spongebob Squarepants’ as a child, never missing a single episode. If anything, I’m more than positive I’ve seen all of them at least three times through, if not more. In August of 2020 Nickelodeon announced a second animated spin-off series to ‘Spongebob Squarepants’ following ‘Kamp Koral: Spongebob’s Under Years’ simply titled ‘The Patrick Star Show’ which would focus primarily on the famous starfish we’ve all grown to love.13 episodes were ordered by March of 2021 and was set to premiere during summer. On Friday afternoon at France’s Annecy Animation Festival, Nickelodeon gave the most detailed preview yet for the network’s second “Spongebob” spinoff, “The Patrick Star Show,” and looked back at 20 years of the global hit franchise. Announced earlier this week, “The Patrick Star Show” will debut Friday, July 9 at 7 Pm Et/Pt, followed by the premiere of Nickelodeon’s first animated original series in five years, “Middlemost Post.”
As was the case with its predecessor, nailing down exactly what kind of program the “Patrick Star Show” is can be tough. According to the show’s logline, it “follows a younger Patrick Star living at home with his family, where he hosts his own variety show for the neighborhood from his television-turned-bedroom.”

Annecy, France — Having traveled from the floor of Bikini Bottom to the shores of Lake Annecy in France, SpongeBob SquarePants is kicking off his 20th year at Europe’s most important animation festival with a Nickelodeon panel and accompanying sneak peek of the upcoming special “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout.”
A few lucky Annecy Intl. Animation Film Festival attendees who waited online to score tickets for the rapidly sold-out panel will be the first in the world to see the special, which will release worldwide on the slimy orange network on July 12.
The accompanying panel will include Nickelodeon and SpongeBob vets including co-executive producers Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller, producer Jennie Monica and writer Kaz Prapuolenis.
The special is a mix of traditional 2D animated and live action scenes, on a par with 2004’s “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie,” and even features a cameo from one of the film’s live action superstars.
