Jeffrey Aro has worked on the stunt teams of several major films and television shows in his career – including “Yellowjackets,” “Lost in Space,” “War for the Planet of the Apes,” and more. But his role as supervising stunt coordinator on the Netflix series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” might have been the most complex and trickiest of his career. Discussions about the show started months ahead of production, and the series required Aro to not just train a cast of young actors in the ways of airbending and martial arts but also adhere to what fans of the property remember from the beloved anime series that ran on Nickelodeon in the mid-2000s.
“The first layer we wanted to ensure the cast understood was breathing. So much authentic movement can be found in the breath,” Aro tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “So we just defined four different qigong inner-energy breathing techniques.

Following the success of the Nickelodeon animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, showrunners Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko created a follow-up series titled The Legend of Korra which is set 70 years after its predecessor. The story follows the central protagonist Korra who is the next Avatar after Aang, and her journey towards conquering the elements.

The series which ran for 4 seasons, was well received for its narrative and character sketches. The show saw various antagonists who challenge Korra in her journey to fulfil her destiny. One of the aspects that stood out was how nuanced these villains were without being mere cardboards figures. The creators credited another animated film produced by Studio Ghibli for inspiring them in this regard.

Over the years, we have witnessed multiple iconic female villains in many franchises. From Cersei Lannister to Bellatrix Lestrange, a lot of fictional female villains have made a huge impact on the entertainment industry as a whole. However, not all female antagonists are able to get the respect that they really deserve and a similar thing happened to The Legend of Korra‘s iconic antagonist, Kuvira.

Avatar: The Last Airbender has managed to remain one of the most beloved animated series of all time. Ever since its release, the story has been adapted into other forms of media including books, a live-action film/TV series, video games, etc. And now, a new video game will soon be dropped transporting fans into the world of their favorite benders.

There are many times when Avatar: The Last Airbender is regarded as a masterpiece as compared to The Legend of Korra. There are ways in which the former did a better job at executing concepts that the latter did not even come close to. Understanding characters, indulging in darker themes, and thus far exploring these characters beyond the black and white scaling.
Avatar: The Legend of Korra
Both the shows tried their best but only one prevailed over the other. As a result, The Legend of Korra became a good concept that needed better execution. However, there was one aspect that the series managed to nail in ways the preceding show couldn’t.

In the original show, Aang and Katara end up being together. However, fans have often wondered, if it was the plan to begin with, following the undertones in her and Zuko’s bond. Despite starting off on the wrong foot by living on opposite sides of the war, Katara did eventually start to see good in Zuko, but the original show never overtly inclined towards establishing a romantic bond.
But with the live-action series moving forward for two more seasons, the showrunner of the first season refused to indulge if the show will expand upon their bond.

I think we’ve finally started to understand why Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino left Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. Thus far, the reception to the upcoming live-action series has been very positive. The photos and casting were an exact mirror of what the animated characters looked like. However, the trailers did an excellent job of reminding audiences of the beloved classic. The Avatar franchise is on its way to making a comeback, with multiple properties rumored to be in production. This involves the Earth Avatar series and a film that would follow the adult version of Aang and his friends from the original animated series.

Along with the shift of animated movie Transformers One by one week in September this year, Paramount pushed the Aang Avatar animated movie from Oct. 10, 2025 to Jan. 30, 2026.
The Lauren Montgomery directed animated film stars the voice of Dave Bautista (this was made official at CinemaCon last week), Eric Nam, Dionne Quan, Jessica Matten and Roman Zaragoza. William Mata is co-director.
The big screen movie is based on Avatar: The Last Airbender which was created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko. Producers are Konietzko, Dante Dimartino, Latifa Ouaou and Maryann Garger.
The Last Airbender is big business: the new live-action Netflix series around the globe has clocked an estimated 60M views. M. Night Shyamalan’s only franchise movie in his canon is the live-action take of the Nickelodeon show which grossed close to $320M worldwide.

Transformers One, is going now on Sept. 20 instead of Sept. 13.
The move gets Transformers One further away from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice which is going to eat up the September box office. However, already on this weekend is DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s Wild Robot. Two big animated movies are certainly not going to live on the same weekend.
The release date change also comes in the wake of the great reception that Transformers One received out of CinemaCon last week. Late September has been a rich bed for family animated movies including Hotel Transylvania 2 ($48.2M opening), Hotel Transylvania ($42.5M opening) and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs ($34M opening).
Transformers One is among one of Paramount’s highest tested movies in the studio’s history.

The histories of the four nations have been well explored in the world of Avatar, but there seems to be more to discover. Bryan Konietzko and Micahel Dante Dimartino, creators of the story, had a lot more to explore in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. This was especially true when it came to the confirmation of the relationship between Korra and Asami Sato, which was not only cemented by a Tumblr post by Konietzko but was also explored in the 2018 comic book continuation of The Legend of Korra, Turf Wars.

Remakes have been a part of Hollywood since time immemorial, and even though film enthusiasts are absolutely over it, it doesn’t seem like they are going to stop anytime soon. The fan-favorite The Blair Witch Project is next in line as Lionsgate and Blumhouse are all set to revive the franchise. The 1999 horror film still remains one of the most terrifying films that Hollywood has to offer, and if the remake wants to stand a chance against it, the creators are going to have to give it their all and then some.

Avatar: The Last Airbender, as a franchise, is always deliberate with every decision that is made. Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most critically acclaimed series of all time. Not only does it have stellar fan reviews from all sides, it also has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One of its most commended aspect is its immersive world-building. Not only are the dynamics between factions excellently well-thought-out, but the powers and bending as a concept are truly one of a kind.

What a time for "Avatar: The Last Airbender" fans to be alive. The Aang Gang was first immortalized in Nickelodeon's original animated series, one that practically altered the brain chemistry of countless kids of my generation and introduced us to the sheer potential of storytelling. Netflix most recently took advantage of the nostalgia and goodwill the show still enjoys, translating the tale of Aang's destiny as the Avatar and his war against the Fire Nation into a live-action retelling that quickly justified a second and third season. All that took place as a backdrop to the news first reported two years ago, of course, which indicated that Avatar Studios (headed by the creators of the original show, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dimartino) was going all in on a trio of new animated movies set in the world of "Avatar."

Created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s mythos is as complex as it can get, thanks to its fantasy theme. The world of the animated television series involves four nations, each with their own unique bending abilities: the Fire Nation, Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, and Air Nomads.
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Based on Aang, the last surviving Avatar capable of saving the Avatar world with his powers of bending all four elements, the story also focuses on Zuko. The exiled prince of the Fire Nation, Zuko shares a great bond with Aang. But surprisingly, as the mythos goes, the two characters are not just friends but actually great-grandfather and great-grandson.

Set in an Asiatic setting involving several fictional elements, Avatar: The Last Airbender also involves elements like spirits and forms of spiritual magic.

A piece of even more exciting news is that the makers are reportedly planning more animated projects to show more of the rich and expansive world of bending and elemental magic. Avatar: The Legend of Korra has a lot in its past that makes it a controversial show in the eyes of Avatar: The Last Airbender fans. From the stories it followed to the well-established lore it disregarded, there were various aspects of the spin-off series that did not sit well with the fans. At the same time, there were those who saw great potential in the series.

Korra’s journey is unique on its own, set in a dystopian world filled with challenges unlike those other Avatars were forced to face. Much like Nickelodeon’s animated hit Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005), its follow-up show The Legend of Korra showcased similar elements, where the protagonist triumphs over evil and ends the show by venturing on a happy journey with their loved one. Only this time the show creators set a milestone with Korra at a great risk, to avoid future regrets.

Although Avatar: The Last Airbender has become a world-renowned franchise for all demographics of people, its target audience has always been children. Avatar: The Last Airbender and Avatar: The Legend of Korra worked hand in hand to make audiences fall in love with the world of bending. While the former acted as the introduction, being the initial sketch of what the different elements were able to do; the latter took it to another level. Filling in the color of all that the elements were capable of and creating a final painting of what we know to be one of the most iconic power structures of all time.

Sources say Kim’s intention was to lay the foundation for season one of Avatar: The Last Airbender after stepping in for the beloved franchise’s creators. Given the long turnaround time in crafting the series — Netflix ordered it in 2018, the creators left in late 2020 and the show didn’t debut until February 2024 — sources say Kim was ready to move on to new opportunities.
Kim, whose résumé include Sleepy Hollow and Leverage, will remain credited as an exec producer on Avatar: The Last Airbender...

Avatar: The Last Airbender takes its time in establishing the characters. From Aang to the Fire Lord Ozai, each and every character is anything but flat. They have depth in layers that would make an onion look simple. When fans think about them, they do not see characters but actual people.
Such was the magic that Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimatrino brought to the world.
Aang in Avatar: The Last Airbender
There were many characters who had their own individuality and ability to stand out without being backed by others. One of the most developed characters is Zuko. His journey is one that makes him into the person he is today through great turmoil and suffering.
From an anti-hero to a fan-favorite character, his growth was definitely an interesting one to experience.

Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino drew a lot from Eastern philosophy to construct the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Avatar: The Legend of Korra. While the former series played a host of tropes straight, the challenge for the sequel was to more or less what the first iteration of the show did while remaining fresh.
The Legend of Korra
While the creators leveled up the action of the series, they decided to make the villains a little more entrenched in the grey areas of morality, rather than having a clear-cut, mustache-twirling bad guy that was the Fire Nation tyrant Lord Ozai. The creators opened up about their thoughts on the matter, specifically with regards to one villain that the duo crafted that has “messed with” fans.

Avatar Studios, created to churn our content set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, was welcomed with great fanfare by fans. To think of a studio that would dedicate all its resources towards making Avatar content was a huge win for fans of the franchise. However, fans were curious about what kinds of projects they might see coming out of the studio, leading to tons of rumors about the nature of the shows and films that the studio was making.

One such rumor seemed to be that Avatar: The Last Airbender will be getting a second helping with a fourth season, one that would focus on adapting the Dark Horse Comics run with the IP, which followed Zuko and Azula, where the former served as sort of an Uncle Iroh figure to the former heir apparent to the Phoenix Throne.

Whenever one thinks of a protagonist of an animated series, one starts picturing a character who does no wrong and is always humble, down to earth, and always trying to help others. However, this image is far from the character sketch of Korra, the protagonist of The Legend of Korra, the series that served as a sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender.
