The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the fourth and final time during the 2023-2024 Broadway season on April 26, to discuss eligibility of 12 productions for the 77th Annual Tony Awards in 2024.
The productions discussed were: “The Wiz,” “Suffs,” “Stereophonic,” “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Cabaret,” “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” “Patriots,” “Mary Jane,” “Uncle Vanya,” “Illinoise,” “Mother Play,” and “The Great Gatsby.”
The most impactful decision of this announcement is the determination that both Steve Carell and William Jackson Harper will be eligible for Lead Actor in a Play for the Lincoln Center Theatre revival of “Uncle Vanya.” Most prognosticators assumed that Harper would contend in the Featured Actor race. This category switch means that Lead Actor in a Play will have a guaranteed five nominees. Conversely, Anika Noni Rose was not bumped up to the Lead Actress in a Play category, so that race will contain just four guaranteed nominees...

Coming off the success of The Dark Knight trilogy, WB wanted to take a similar route for Superman, leading them to bring Zack Snyder on board for 2013’s Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill. But considering, unlike Batman, Superman is a bright and optimistic character, making him dark and brooding didn’t land well among fans, and with Bvs, these issues only aggravated.
While the Dceu might’ve gotten more wrongs than rights regarding the beloved heroes, it did excel in the costume department, especially with Superman, which inspired Black Panther’s iconic suit.

“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” and “Asteroid City” all earned nominations from the Critics Choice Awards for Best Production Design. That bodes well for each film’s Oscar chances this year. But before we get too ahead of ourselves by predicting who might win this category, let’s take a look back at the last 10 Oscar winners for Best Production Design.
We’re going to take a look at the academy’s tastes here to see what type of films in what type of setting they nominate most. Then, we’ll try to apply those findings to this year’s race as we scrutinize the movies hoping for a nomination in this design category. Here we go.
These 10 winners seem like totally different movies but a closer look does show some similarities. Firstly, seven out of the 10 are set in the real world. “The Shape of Water...

Below-the-line categories at the Oscars just don’t get the attention they deserve. The artistry on display helps to bring to life a movie. Visual effects are such a key part of the storytelling of “A New Hope.” Costume design is vital to the storytelling of “Phantom Thread.” And production design is so key in “Parasite,” “Avatar,” and “The Lord of the Rings” in so many different ways.
With that in mind, let’s take a look a closer look at some of the below-the-line categories, starting here with Best Production Design. We’re going to look at the last 10 winners in this category to work out if there is a pattern in the way the academy awards certain winners. They love biopics in the acting categories, for example, so what are they partial to in Production Design? Take a look at the below chart.

Netflix’s Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop revisited the real OGs of the Hip-Hop movement for women and transformed Black culture through their poetry, art, and music. Directed and produced by Dream Hampton, Hannah Beachler, and Raeshem Nijhon, this groundbreaking series showcases how women reshaped the music industry and inspired generations. Despite Hip-Hop not being my favorite genre, what I appreciated about the documentary series is how it prompts us to contemplate the dedication and passion of these artists in pushing boundaries and becoming inspirations.
Even though many people around the world vibe with the music of contemporary Hip-Hop stars like Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and Megan Thee Stallion, not everyone is familiar with the original trailblazers of the genre. In a male-dominated world, the story of how a woman became the first female Mc is often overlooked. However, thanks to this documentary, we gain valuable insights...

Ryan Coogler's 2018 film "Black Panther," arguably the best film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stands apart from its contemporaries for its creative visuals and its thematic heft. The elaborate Afro-futurism of Wakanda is unique in cinema, and the film's villain, Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), confronts the title hero (Chadwick Boseman) on issues of racial justice that the hero had studiously refused to earnestly ponder. Within the already-complicated, interlocking mythology of the MCU, "Black Panther" introduced its own set of rituals, myths, and traditions that functioned beautifully on their own terms. One couldn't help but be swept up by the details of Coogler's carefully thought-out, impeccably designed fantasy kingdom.
One of the central rituals of Wakanda, fans will recall, is a regal Challenge Ritual which is depicted twice in Coogler's film, once when the Black Panther takes the throne, and later when Killmonger challenges him. While Wakanda is a monarchy...

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” capped off its run with the guilds by taking home a trophy at the Casting Society of America’s Artios Awards on Thursday. It had previously prevailed with eight of the other nine guilds at which it contended. It lost out only with the sound editors.
Two of its Academy Awards rivals for the top award — “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — did win over the sound editors. Those victories are among their overall hauls of four apiece. “Elvis” also prevailed with the cinematographers, costume designers, and makeup artists/hairstylists while “Top Gun: Maverick” scored with the actors, film editors and sound mixers.

The 95th Academy Awards are going to be a nailbiter above and below the line. Nominated for Best Production Design are “Babylon,” “Elvis,” “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” and “The Fabelmans.” The Critics Choice, Art Directors Guild and BAFTA Awards have all picked “Babylon,” thereby positioning it as the frontrunner to win the Oscar.
However, the divisive Old Hollywood epic’s liabilities, as well as the strengths of its competitors, leave other possibilities open to consideration. For one, we could see the third instance of a corresponding Best Production Design/Best Cinematography win this decade, which excludes “Babylon” and permits only an “Elvis” or “All Quiet on the Western Front” victory. Even though the data doesn’t favor the remaining two nominees, “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “The Fabelmans,” their quality alone makes a compelling case. Here are my arguments for, and against,...

To celebrate International Women's Day, Marvel and Disney+ released a new four-part mini-series called "MPower," which highlights the stories, creation, and impact of some of the most empowering figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The episodes are centered around the women of Wakanda, Captain Marvel and the women she inspires (Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan), Scarlet Witch and the other women of "WandaVision," and the women of Guardians of the Galaxy. The series utilizes scenes from the films and related Disney+ series, archival footage, interviews with the stars and creative team members that helped bring the characters to life, and stunning original animation. The series is not just a celebration of the characters and how they've brought success to the MCU, but also a deeply intimate look at how the actors who play these characters connect with their stories.

Will Smith was the surprise guest that set the room abuzz Wednesday night at the 14th annual African American Film Critics Assn. Awards at the Beverly Wilshire hotel.
But Smith had tough competition in the emotional-speech department from fellow honorees that included Danielle Deadwyler, Viola Davis, Angela Bassett and Gina Prince-Bythewood.
Deadwyler, who won lead actress honors for her tour de force role in “Till,” drew the crowd’s the attention to the world-changing impact of Mamie Till-Mobley, whose provocative decision to show pictures of her son’s brutalized corpse helped ignite the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and ’60s.
Like other speakers, Deadwyler drew a direct comparison to the conditions that existed more than a half-century ago to the present day, when politicians are pursuing racist legislation designed to restrict the teaching of American history in schools as it relates to the Black experience over the past 400 years.

The African-American Film Critics Association (Aafca) Award ceremony honored the variety of Black experiences depicted on screen, along with Black excellence in front of and behind the camera. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Till, Emancipation and The Woman King were among the top winners at Wednesday’s event at the Beverly Wilshire hotel. The event, hosted by Roy Wood Jr., also marked Will Smith’s first return to an awards stage following the 2022 Academy Awards.

The aim of Matt Reeves’ The Batman was to make it feel as if the action could really happen. “There’s no science fiction element or fantastic element that removes it from our reality,” production VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon says, explaining that required doing as much in camera as possible. Special FX supervisor Dominic Tuohy and his team even built four versions of the Batmobile for different uses. Lemmon says that in the ramp jump (pictured right), which occurs as Batman chases the Penguin, his team used a stripped-down vehicle with additional features. “Eventually they were able to dial it in so the car could get up to about 12 feet high,” he claims, adding: “It soared for nearly a hundred feet before it would hit the ground again. Will Smith returned to awards season festivities Wednesday evening, taking the stage to accept the Beacon Award at the African American Film Critics Association Awards. The speech marked Smith’s first in-person speech at an awards ceremony since his controversy at the 2022 Oscars, in which the actor slapped Chris Rock onstage.
Smith’s “Emancipation” costar Charmaine Bingwa and Aafca cofounder Gil L. Robertson introduced Smith and Antoine Fuqua, the historical drama’s director, early in the evening’s ceremony. After Fuqua’s minute-long thanks to Aafca, Apple TV+ and the film’s cast and crew, Smith took the microphone to recount the production of the film.
“‘Emancipation’ was the individual most difficult film of my entire career. It was all outdoors, that is true,” Smith joked, earning laughs from the crowd.
“It was the second day of shooting and 110 degrees… I was in a scene with one of the white actors.

In Steven Spielberg’s film about his childhood and finding his identity as an artist, pictured above, the challenge for Rick Carter and his crew was how to tell the story visually. He used the Fableman family’s three homes as primary reference points, with their different architectural styles and decorative elements adding nuance as the family moves from one house to another — with each member progressing through his or her own story.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever introduced a new Marvel nemesis. Tenoch Huerta Mejía played Namor, the king of The Lost Tribe. The Lost Tribe lives underwater and some of the film was filmed underwater. Huerta Mejía said he learned to hold his breath and his record was five minutes.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is now available on DVD, Blu-ray, 4K Uhd, Disney+ and digital VOD. In the bonus features, the cast and crew discuss their underwater training for the Lost Tribe scenes.
The cast of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ had to learn to dive
Some of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s fantastic visuals could only be accomplished with visual effects. However, for simpler scenes underwater, director Ryan Coogler wanted his actors to really be submerged.
“The way we did things on the first film is we did as much for real as we could,” Coogler said.

Greetings, friends. If you're someone who returns to this sporadic column seeking Blu-ray info, I want to thank you. You're swell! And as always, I will continue to bring you the latest in Blu-rays. This week has one of the best movies of 2021: Steven Spielberg's "The Fabelmans." But wait, there's more! There's a 4K release of Hype Williams' amazing cult classic "Belly," Disney's recent animated flick "Strange World," Elvis fighting a mummy in "Bubba Ho-Tep," and of course, the "Black Panther" sequel "Wakanda Forever." That's a fine line-up if you ask me.
The Fabelmans
Steven Spielberg has been talking about making a movie about his childhood for decades, and he finally got around to it with "The Fabelmans." But this isn't hagiography, or Spielberg talking about what a talented kid he was (even though he was). Instead, this is Spielberg grappling with what is arguably the most persistent...

“Nope” was made in the grandest traditions of Hollywood. Jordan Peele, probably more so than any other studio director today, is a commercial filmmaker with a great deal to say about our world, but is able to successfully embed intellectual complexity into the sharp clarity of a well made, well told piece of entertainment that keeps the audience on the edge of its seats. “Nope” was commercially successful, well reviewed, regarded as a real piece of cinema made by a serious director, with A-list artisans and impeccable craft. It’s a film you’d expect to be embraced the by the Oscar craft branches.
While visually and aurally striking, there’s nothing flashy, look-at-me about the filmmaking of “Nope.” Despite its technical innovations (more later), it’s classical filmmaking at its best. Peele strove to create a spectacle — and not that modern, flat, green-screen version of spectacle, with its eyeball...

In the season of the spectacle, the Oscar craft nominations were pretty evenly split, led by “Elvis” and the late-surging “All Quiet on the Western Front” with six. Next in line with four nominations were “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Topping out at three nominations each were “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Babylon,” and “The Batman.” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “The Fabelmans,” and “TÁR” were nominated for two craft awards apiece. And “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths” and “Empire of Light” scored lone cinematography nominations for Darius Khondji (his second) and Roger Deakins (his 16th).
This was definitely the result of an unusually competitive field containing three sequels, a DC reboot (“The Batman”), a World War I actioner (“All Quiet”), a multiverse adventure (“Everything Everywhere”), an epic Hollywood comedy-drama (“Babylon”), and a musical biopic extravaganza (“Elvis”). The biggest night of the year for critics ended with “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” The beloved multiverse movie that almost defies genre classification won five awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, Best Original Screenplay for the Daniels, Best Editing, and Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan.
That “Everything Everywhere” would dominate the show was far from a surprise: the movie led all features with 14 nominations, including four acting citations for Quan, Michelle Yeoh (who lost Best Actress to Cate Blanchett for “Tar”), and Stephanie Hsu and Jamie Lee Curtis (who both lost in the Best Supporting Actress to Angela Bassett for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”). The other acting winner was Brendan Fraser for “The Whale,” a victory that could springboard him to an eventual Oscar win.
In fact, historically, the Critics Choice Awards and Oscars match winners’ results roughly 70 percent of the time.

With 11 nominees for Best Picture, 10 for Best Director, and nine titles battling it out for Best Drama series, competition will be fierce at tonight’s Critics Choice Awards. Several ties in the voting process led the 600-member Critics Choice Association to nominate more films than a category typically allows, which simply means that even more of the year’s biggest films and shows have a shot at the prizes.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” leads all films with 14 nominations, while Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” is close behind with 11 nominations. “Babylon” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” each picked up nine nods, while “TÁR” and “Elvis” each scored seven.
On the television side, “Abbott Elementary” and “Better Call Saul” led the pack with six and five nominations, respectively.
The 2023 Critics Choice Awards will be broadcast live on the CW starting at 7 p.m. Et. Keep reading for the complete list of nominees,...

On January 9, the Art Directors Guild announced the nominees for its 27th annual awards, which will be handed out on February 18. These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the Academy Awards. Over the first 26 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Production Design has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various categories.
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is the clear frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Production Design. It reaped a bid in the fantasy film genre with the Adg as did its strongest Oscar rival, “Avatar: The Way of Water.” The other three likeliest Oscar nominees — “Babylon,” “Elvis” and “The Fabelmans”– contend in the period picture category. That race is rounded out by “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “White Noise.”
The other fantasy film nominees are: “The Batman,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Nope.”
The contemporary contenders are: “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths...
