The 2019 Joker film starring Joaquin Phoenix was a game changer for DC as director Todd Phillips created something unique out of the character that was never done before. Instead of the usual confrontation between Joker and Batman, the film focused on exploring Joker’s psychological deterioration in a crime-ridden Gotham City.

The upcoming Joker sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, will be “mostly a jukebox musical,” featuring at least 15 covers of popular songs, according to a new report.
Directed by Todd Philips and starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, Joker: Folie à Deux is due in October 2024, and though we’ve known it would be a musical since 2022, this is the first we’ve heard about the specifics of the songs. According to Variety, its “insiders privy to filming and early versions” who’ve confirmed the film’s “mostly jukebox” status.
Among the 15 covers will be the Judy Garland standard from The Band Wagon, “That’s Entertainment!” There is, too, the opportunity for “an original song (or two) to be added to the final version,” though details on who would compose or sing those numbers remain unknown.
Worth noting, though, is that Hildur Guðnadóttir, composer for 2019’s original Joker, is said to have...

Joaquin Phoenix starrer Joker was a great character study of one of the most beloved supervillains/antiheroes of the DC lore. After the overwhelming love for the character’s portrayal by Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, Phoenix took on the impossible task of reinventing the character. Alienating itself from the DC universe also added to its focused narrative.

Box Office Records Broken By The Super Mario Bros Movie(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Super Mario Bros emerged as one of the highest-earning movies of 2023 so far, creating several other box office records. The animated movie is based on the iconic Nintendo Mario video game. It had actors like Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, and others in the voice cast, and they all did a splendid job, especially Jack has been receiving a lot of praise for his voice acting and his song ‘Peaches.’
Jack reportedly wrote the lyrics of the song himself. The song is about his love for Princess Peach, and the versatile actor sang it himself. In a recent interview, Black shared his thoughts on the sequel of the video game-inspired film. The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and was made on an estimated budget of $100 million.

Too bombastic for the French establishment and too idiosyncratic to ever go full Hollywood, Luc Besson once charted an impressive middle ground on the international scene.
At his 1990s peak, the action auteur riffed and danced around the blockbuster formula, delivering genre potboilers so perverse (in the case of 1994’s “Leon: The Professional”) or uncanny (as with 1997’s “The Fifth Element”) as to stand noticeably apart from your standard studio offering and, in the process, Besson built for himself an empire. Beset with legal and financial problems the French director’s star has dimmed in the past decade, but his hunger clearly has not.
Which brings us to “Dogman.” Premiering in competition at the Venice Film Festival, the project marks a splashy comeback of sorts for the beleaguered filmmaker, just recently acquitted of sexual assault charges, and an impassioned argument that his erstwhile model still has some juice. That could very well be the case,...

The world of DC is in an odd position. Currently, six films are set to be released in the DC universe: Shazam: Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and Joker: Folie a Deux. However, the Todd Philips sequel to the 2019 hit has always been a separate thing, so Joker 2 doesn’t really count as a film that’s shared with the Dceu. However, everything else does, and the world of DC has been crumbling slowly since James Gunn,

A lot is on the line this weekend with the release of Warner Bros./DC’s “Black Adam.” Theaters need the film to perform to keep revenue trending upward after a long drought, and Warner Bros. needs some good news amidst its turbulent post-merger period under Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
But more than anything else, “Black Adam” is a test for its lead actor and box office superstar, Dwayne Johnson, who has signaled publicly that he wants this film to be the start of a long-term partnership between the comic book film label and his production company, Seven Bucks, with the powerful, murderous antihero he plays in this new film at the center of it.
For that to happen, “Black Adam” will need to at least meet studio and independent projections of a 60 million opening weekend, which would sit between the 53.5 million opening of “Shazam!” in spring 2019 and...

Joker was a monumental success for Warner Bros. The DC movie earned more than a billion dollars despite a modest budget, making it the highest grossing R-rated film in history. And though director Todd Philips was adamant before release that there would not be a Joker 2, money talks and if the studio believes there’s more money out there, then they’re going to produce a follow-up. And it seems there’s indeed more money to be made.
We’ve heard countless reports that’ve pointed to a sequel being in early development and now, to give us an idea of what it could look like, YouTube user StryderHD has another cool fan trailer for us, featuring Joaquin Phoenix’s return to the Oscar-winning role and teasing what appears to be a pretty intriguing follow-up.
Phoenix is obviously terrific in the titular role and this teaser shows a lot of his brilliant work from Joker.

There are certain actors who you wouldn’t think would ever be in a comic book movie. Daniel Day-Lewis is the first name that comes to mind. Can you imagine? Another would be Leonardo DiCaprio. He’s been arguably the biggest star in the business for two decades and didn’t need to dawn the tights to reach a certain level in the industry. He also chooses his projects very carefully and makes only one movie every few years. The same goes for Day-Lewis, although he appears to be retired now.
Another name I would have added to that list though is Joaquin Phoenix. Like Day-Lewis and DiCaprio, Phoenix is an actor who chooses his projects wisely and often goes deep into character. He also seems like a mercurial guy, so putting him in a money-making assembly-line comic book movie that would no doubt spawn several sequels would be outside of his comfort zone.

He he, ha ha, ho ho, wanna hear a jo-ker? Well, that’s what I’m here for allegedly. Maybe I’ll just leave it to the professionals, like Todd Philips, the director of one of 2019’s highest-grossing pics, Joker. With the future of the Dceu up in the air currently, nobody knows for sure what’s going on, but the filmmaker certainly hopes for a future where Batman explores the remnants of Gotham City that were forever changed by Joaquin Phoenix’s antics.
Philips was chatting with Variety at the Palm Springs International Film Festival recently about the unclear future of the Joker, and whether or not there’s going to be a sequel. Nobody knows just yet, but Philips pontificated about his desires to follow the city and who it creates, saying:
“It’s a beautiful Gotham. What I would like to see someone tackle is what Batman looks like from that Gotham.

As of this weekend, Joker reached a milestone no other R-rated film has yet to achieve: making $1 billion at the box office. The controversial film, which previously raked in $93.5 million in its opening weekend, officially knocked Deadpool out of the top spot as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time (the Ryan Reynolds action-comedy pulled in $783 million), Entertainment Weekly reports.
In addition to crushing this record, the controversial Todd Philips film - that follows the origin of Batman's most infamous foe and criminal mastermind Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) - nabbed the highest opening weekend in October when it earned almost $94 million. Following its Oct. 4 premiere, Joker went on to bring in $737.5 million in its first three weekends.
Although there are currently no plans for a sequel, we'd bet this isn't the last time we'll see the villainous character onscreen.

Why so serious? While some filmmakers get their start making cheaply made B-movies or horror films, there’s a new crop of directors emerging who previously cut their teeth making classic comedies. And while most haven’t abandoned their sense of humor entirely, they’ve finally been recognized at both the box office and awards circuit by veering into prestige pictures. The latest example is Todd Phillips, the director of “Joker,” which as the darkly disturbed origin story of the iconic Batman villain is no laughing matter. Here are some other directors who have re-emerged as more than just funny men.
Preston Sturges – Comedy Classic: “The Lady Eve”/Dramatic Turn: “Sullivan’s Travels”

This is not a junket interview. Yes, “Joker” director Todd Philips had ground through 46 interviews the day before. He slept fitfully at the Four Seasons Beverly Hills to be on time for a second day of round-robin interviews in the international media machine that is the required job description for big studio releases like one based on a classic DC Comics character. But this conversation is a long, quiet, rambling reflection in a hard-to-find hotel nook on why the creator of the billion-dollar global “Hangover” franchise and other broad comedies like “Old School” decided to co-write and direct a supervillain movie in the style of an art-house ’70s flick. Phillips, a lean and emotionally taut 49-year-old, has a lot to say about the subject, but it boils down to this: He was trying to shake up a saturated studio system. “It’s very difficult nowadays to cut through the fog of all this content,...

With a quick joke and a plea to let his film stand alone as art, director Todd Philips unveiled “Joker” to an audience of executives and glitterati at the film’s buzzed-about Hollywood premiere.
Forgoing the usual introduction of cast and producers, Phillips made a quip to the audience at Los Angeles’ Tcl Chinese Theater: “If you like the movie, tell a friend, we haven’t gotten enough press.”
Phillips, of course, refers to a nearly two weeks of headlines that “Joker” has inspired thanks to its violent content and themes of mental instability and anarchy that Batman’s most famous foe is known for.
Security was tight but not excessive, with check-in perimeters extended a few feet more than normal for premieres, and traffic on a shut-down Hollywood Blvd condensed to a single lane for talent arrivals. Car interiors and trunks were inspected by police with dogs.

Warner Bros. Entertainment has restricted access for print and broadcast journalists from the red carpet at the upcoming U.S. premiere of “Joker.”
The event, which will take place on Saturday in Hollywood at the famous Tcl Chinese Theatre, will now only allow photographers access to talent and filmmakers. Expected attendees include Joaquin Phoenix, director Todd Philips, and supporting stars like Zazie Beetz and Frances Conroy.
“Our red carpet is comprised of photographers only,” a studio spokesperson told Variety, “a lot has been said about ‘Joker,’ and we just feel it’s time for people to see the film.”
The move to restrict access to interviews comes after a week of headlines about the violent and provocative nature of the film, and measures to inform and protect American moviegoers as they prepare to screen it.
Mid-size theater chain Landmark is prohibiting costume play based on Phoenix’s turn as the iconic Batman villain.

What road should one take when approaching a film like An Officer and a Spy? On one hand, it is a perfectly robust, informative, prestige-y and even timely dramatization of the Dreyfus affair, the infamous late 19th-century political scandal in which a French Jewish soldier was wrongfully imprisoned for treason. On the other hand, it is a story about injustice and prosecution directed by, of all people, Roman Polanski.
So to that first hand: an especially dashing and mustachioed Jean Dujardin stars as George Picquart, the man responsible for pulling the thread from which the Dreyfus scandal ultimately unraveled. Polanski arranges the narrative in much the same way that Mike Leigh did with Peterloo, another film about 19th-century social injustice–and one in which the director carefully set out the names, dates, and people involved before going for the jugular in the final act. The first half of An Officer...

As Hollywood converges in Toronto and things get noisy, some Canadian film production and financing companies are using the home-field advantage to talk up fresh ideas and announce new projects in a market milieu that feels both untethered and exciting.
“This is a frothy time for content — it’s a perfect moment in entertainment history to get in the game in a disciplined way,” says Unbranded Pictures co-founder Eddy Moretti.
Moretti capped off 20 years as Vice Media’s chief creative officer by greenlighting Vice’s investment in Scott Z. Burns’ political thriller “The Report,” and ended up stepping in to finance the other half after hatching his new company. Amazon bought “Report” at Sundance for $14 million; after Toronto, the film will have a short theatrical run before streaming on Prime Video in October.

What is it about playing the role of the Joker that brings out the worst in well-respected method actors? Heath Ledger famously locked himself away from friends and family for a month to develop his interpretation of the villain, had trouble sleeping and kept a journal full of news and photos of real and imaginary psychopaths to help him get into character. Jared Leto, meanwhile, used to send his Suicide Squad co-stars live rats and other disturbing paraphernalia while staying in the role outside of shooting.
Now, Joaquin Phoenix, who plays the titular part in Todd Philips’ Joker, has spoken about the insane preparation he put into playing the Clown Prince of Crime and the psychological toll it took on him. During an interview with Et Canada, the actor made the following remarks about prepping for the gig:
“The first thing was the weight loss, that’s really what I started with.

While the beginning of fall usually means back-to-school and the end of outdoor barbecues, Hollywood has its own way of changing seasons. The Toronto International Film Festival, which starts on Sept. 5, marks the official launch of the Oscars race.
Unlike neighboring film festivals at Telluride and Venice, which both take place on the weekend before, Toronto is easier to reach and packed with far more screenings: more than 200 movies. Here are 14 that will likely be the talk of Canada.
“Hustlers”
(Stx Entertainment, Sept. 13)
Director: Lorene Scafaria
Cast: Constance Wu, Jennifer Lopez, Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, Cardi B, Lizzo
Ever since I saw “Hustlers” at an early screening, I can’t stop raving about it. Every Oscars season, there’s a movie that sneaks up on the pundits. And I have a feeling that this dramatic comedy written and directed by Lorene Scafaria will be a box office hit and critical darling.

Jack Black is no longer starring in Todd Philips’ upcoming comedy “Man-Witch” for Warner Bros., according to Variety.
Apparently, Black’s exit follows a conflict between the studio and his agent Sharon Sheinwold. Specific reasons have not been released at this stage.
Black was originally supposed to play a man who discovers he has supernatural powers and ends up teaching witchcraft to a bunch of girls. To me, that sounds a bit like “School of Rock” meets “Harry Potter,” although I'm sure he could have pulled it off quite well.
Despite Black’s exit, production on “Man-Witch” continues. The film is directed by Philips, whose credits include “Old School” and “Starsky & Hutch.”
Black’s voice can currently be heard in “Kung Fu Panda.” He will next be seen in Ben Stiller’s action comedy “Tropic Thunder."...
