Iconic Canadian rockers Great Big Sea played to a large and rowdy Lethbridge crowd this past weekend on October 26th as part of their Xx Tour. The band played a staggering two full sets worth of music in support of their 20 Year Anniversary and greatest hits release album, delivering one of the most memorable concerts I've been to this year. I grew up on Canadian rock music. The Tragically Hip, Our Lady Peace, Nickelback (before, you know) and all of that. I was eight years old when Great Big Sea debuted and I quickly became aware of their Irish flavored high energy rock with hits like 'Run Runaway', 'Mari Mac' and 'Ordinary Day'. They were a lot of fun to listen to but I never gave them enough credit for their refined sound. Being such a huge fan of Celtic rock today I can appreciate...

In a short period of time, two 20th anniversary box sets have been released, both using Xx in their titles. The wonderful Canadian band Great Big Sea just had their celebratory two-disc set come out and now comes Tarantino Xx, a more appropriately named set, commemorating the filmmaker’s two decades in the business.
Quentin Tarantino began like so many of did, obsessed with movies and television and pop culture. His tastes ran along the fringes such as the Hong Kong martial arts fare and the Blaxploitation films of the 1970s. A walking, talking cornucopia of film lore, he was the perfect video store employee, never at a loss for a recommendation regardless of taste. He fortunately turned those interests to filmmaking, bringing his knowledge and passion to screenplays for others and his own works.
If you had to write one line about his work it would be “Always shoot first,...

Actor-writer-producer Allan Hawco can hardly believe his good luck. His labour of love, "Republic of Doyle," has proven to be the little show that could. Since debuting two years ago, it's become a fixture in more than a million Canadian households each week, not to mention countless more in 100 countries around the world. To top it all off, the show recently scored a guest spot from Russell Crowe.
You can catch Crowe in the first episode of Season 3, which premieres Wednesday on CBC. He and his old pal Alan Doyle, lead singer of Great Big Sea, play members of a group of tough guys who show up and complicate Jake's life.
We lured the ever-multitasking Hawco out of the editing room to find out more about the season and its famous guest stars, including Crowe and Shannon Tweed. He dished on everything from what it was like hanging out with Gene Simmons of Kiss,...

It's been a while since Russell Crowe made headlines for anything -- there was the Twitter tirade about circumcision, the phone-throwing incident with a bellhop, the occasional blockbuster hit. CBC is hoping that we've all missed him so much that we'll tune in to the season premiere of Canadian favourite "Republic of Doyle" -- which features Crowe in a guest role.
Last August, the Academy Award winner was in St. John's to perform with his pal and Great Big Sea frontman Alan Doyle, and found time to film an episode for the crime comedy-drama.
The season 3 premiere has Crowe reuniting with his Merry Men co-stars from the 2010 movie "Robin Hood" -- Doyle, Scott Grimes and Kevin Durand. Doyle will reprise his role as a convict from the last season of "Doyle," and this time around, according to the press release from CBC, "the four will play a group of troublemakers...

Prince William and Kate Middleton wrapped up their first full day in Ottawa last night at the Evening National Canada Day celebrations. Kate Middleton wore Issa for the event, following her afternoon and morning spent in the white Reiss dress from her engagement photos. She continued to wear a diamond maple leaf brooch, which is the same one William's grandmother Queen Elizabeth wore during her 1951 tour of Canada. William and Kate were treated to an evening of music, including the folk group Great Big Sea, on the city's Parliament Hill. They stayed for just over 30 minutes with eight members of their entourage before heading to the foreign office to watch fireworks. William and Kate will attend a tree planting in Ottawa around noon (Et) today before leaving for their next stop in Montreal, where they have two activities planned for this afternoon. William and Kate aren't staying there, though, as...

After a few hours away from the crowds, it was an evening of pop music and fireworks for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Rapturous applause greeted the couple's arrival at Parliament Hill, where they were attending a concert celebrating Canadian music. Kate dazzled in her regal purple Issa jersey dress, and the maple leaf brooch that had been loaned her by Queen Elizabeth sparkled as it had done earlier in the day. Looking like two honeymooners, Kate, 29, was beaming in the front row, while William, 29, whispered into her ear throughout the show. Photos: Kate & Will Take Canada! The first...

Nerdventures: Familiar Songs From Distant Worlds
When I went to summer camp, the oldest boy’s dorm — and focus point of younger male’s uncool envy — would always get up to antics which their disciples could only aspire to. One of their common flare ups would take place in the mess hall. During any too-dull-to-stand moments or amid any too-hyped-to-ignore cheer offs, they would take it upon themselves to stand on their chairs and in an uncoordinated harmony of vocoded ‘doots’ and ‘deets’ the good old boys would give their try at impersonating the instantly recognizable Super Mario theme. Between the three Game Boy Colours that circulated my padawan dorm, it became clear that this could actually be the second oldest/third youngest crew on camp’s chance to shine, and so it was suggested to my counsellor that perhaps we’d ‘back...

It seems that every twenty years or so, Hollywood decides it wants to take on the English folk hero Robin Hood. From the Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn era, to the Connery/Hepburn duo of Robin and Marian and more recently the dubious-yet-classic Kevin Costner outing, Robin Hood is no stranger to the big screen. I’m going to make myself feel old right now and state that it has been nineteen years since Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and like it or not Hollywood has gone and made another Robin Hood film. This time out they decided to go with a great filmmaker—or rather someone who was a great filmmaker before 1991—Ridley Scott. Predictably, Scott’s Robin Hood is a gritty medieval tale, full of complex political intrigue, brutal battles and more characters than you can shake a sword at. What may come as a surprise to many,...

Director Ridley Scott's upcoming Robin Hood film has cast its Merry Men. Scott Grimes, Kevin Durand and Alan Doyle have signed on to join the untitled film set to begin shooting in April in the UK. The trio will join Oscar winners Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett, who have already been cast in the leading roles of Robin Hood and Maid Marion. The new additions will shake out as follows: Grimes, who you may have seen on NBC's "ER," will play Will Scarlet; Durand, who had a brief role in ABC's "Lost," is set to play Little John; Doyle, the lead singer of Canadian rock band "Great Big Sea," will play Alan A. Dale (is it just a coincidence that the actor's name is so similar to the character's?). It's no secret...

Looks like Russell Crowe’s Robin Hood has found his Merry Men, after a trio of actors today signed on to co-star in the untitled Ridley Scott/Crowe Hood project.Scott Grimes (pictured), Kevin Durand and Alan Doyle will play Will Scarlet, Robin’s nephew and archer extraordinaire; Little John, professional human mountain; and the minstrel Alan A Dayle (a character that seldom featured in previous versions of the Hood legend) in the movie, which starts shooting in the UK this April. In a curious twist, none of the three actors are English, so their Nottingham accents must have been pretty damn decent. Unless, of course, they come from the same part of Nottingham as Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves.Grimes is an American best known as the ginger doctor on E.R., Durand is a Canadian built like a brick shithouse (he’ll next be seen under...
