Things might get heated Tuesday night during the CNN-moderated Florida governor's debate, so will moderator Jake Tapper cool things off with a fan? “I plan to discuss fans, air-conditioning units, heaters and other climate appliances as little as possible,” Tapper joked to TheWrap about the “fangate” controversy over Democrat Charlie Crist bringing a blower to last week's debate with Gov. Rick Scott. Scott didn't come out to participate for several minutes because he took issue with Crist's little fan behind the podium. This all gave cable news and late-night comedy ample fodder to talk about and mock. See video: Stephen Colbert Rips Rick Scott,...

Florida Gov. Rick Scott stubbornly refused to make his way onto the stage to face off in a debate against democratic challenger Charlie Crist because of a fan.

Scott claimed, that per the rules, Crist was in violation of the no electronics policy. Since Crist refused to remove the fan that he had placed beneath his podium, Scott refused to participate in the debate, delaying the start for several minutes.
“Let me explain what this is all about,” said moderator Elliot Rodriguez. “Governor Crist has asked to have a fan, a small fan, placed underneath his podium. The rules of the debate that I was shown by the Scott campaign say that there should be no fan. Stephen Colbert is taking aim at a new ad trying to sway young women to "say yes" to voting Republican in the midterm elections. The ad, which The College Republican National Committee launched earlier this month, is in the vein of TLC's Say Yes to the Dress, with a woman choosing her candidates as if they were wedding gown designers. She ultimately goes for Florida Governor Rick Scott over challenger Charlie Crist, because choosing the Crist gown would be fiscally irresponsible. Colbert mocked the ad for assuming a bridal-themed campaign was the best way to reach women, and later went

The latest Anthony Weiner sexting scandal follows all the typical tropes of a summer sequel. They brought back the same heroes and villains, amped up the supporting cast and added additional technology to make it even bigger and better. And as truth does tend to be stranger than fiction, this scandal has been more entertaining than pretty much anything you'll see in a multiplex this summer.
So why not turn this scandal into a blockbuster? We went ahead and offered our dream casting for when this inevitably turns into a $100 million cinematic experience. Let us know if you agree.
1. Whenever Anthony Weiner is in character as his alter ego Carlos Danger, he will be played by Antonio Banderas in 2002.
2. All other times, he will be played by Butt-Head.
3. His wife Huma Abedin will be played by Angelina Jolie, because the movie ends with Huma kicking Anthony's ass "Tomb Raider" style.

A group of self-proclaimed "satanists" staged a mock rally in support of Florida Gov. Rick Scott Friday for signing a bill that permits school districts to allow students to read inspirational messages of their choosing at assemblies and sporting events.
The group, called The Satanic Temple, hung a sign proclaiming "Hail Satan! Hail Rick Scott!" while rallying on the steps of the Florida capitol building.
Lucien Greaves, the spokesman for the group, insisted earlier that the rally was "not a hoax," but the Miami Herald discovered that Greaves is currently working on a film called "The Satanic Temple."

So as to avoid looking like gremlins who could give a crap whether or not you had health care, Republicans long ago settled on the Federalist argument against the Ppaca: the federal government has no business regulating individual insurance markets. It's not that Republicans don't want health care reform—they totes do!—it should just be left up to the states. Mitt Romney has been the primary ambassador for this point of view, as Obamacare, which Romney says he would repeal all over its face, was partially modeled off Romney's Massachusetts plan. The only way to wiggle out of that is the state's rights argument, which goes like this:
What's good for one state may not suit another and that states should have the freedom to choose what works best for them rather than have to conform to a federal one-size-fits-all plan.
Seems reasonable. So then, if another state should decide to implement Obamacare Romneycare,...

What does Rick Scott have to do, people? He's already kicked voter registration groups out of the state, he's removed people-with-brown-skinned-sounding-last-names foreigners from the voter rolls, and refused to implement current provisions of Obamacare that would discount brand name drugs under Medicare and ease the health care costs for lower class families.
And yet still Florida voters have swung over to Obama. A new Quinnipiac poll finds Obama with a four point lead over Romney, 46-42, outside the 2.4% margin of error. That's not much of a lead, until you consider the fact that Romney was up by six points one month ago, 47-41. A ten point swing in one month is quite a movement given that recent economic news was supposed to have been bad for Obama.

The biggest shift was among independent voters, who swung from Romney to Obama by 17 points.

Farther down in Public Policy Polling's "Rick Scott is so unpopular he'd lose to the average voter's imaginary friend" is some telling data on same-sex marriage:
Like voters in most of the country Floridians are moving on gay marriage. They're still narrowly against it with 45% opposed and 42% supportive. But that three point margin represents an 8 point shift from last September when 48% were opposed and just 37% in support. This very much looks to be an Obama effect. Republicans and independents have moved very little on the issue but Democrats have moved 20 points from +15 support (48/33) to +35 support (61/26). The most dramatic movement has been among African Americans who've shifted 48 points from being opposed -30 in the fall (23/53) to now supporting it by 18 points (49/31).
Once again, for everybody who pulled a "Waaah Obama's endorsement of gay marriage is meaningless Waaah" last month, we now have even more demonstrable proof that Obama's endorsement made a substantial,...

Dark Green News! High speed rail bill killed in Fl hurts environment and cost state billions? [May 9] A fiscal and environmental nightmare is happening in Florida. Since Florida Governor Rick Scott canceled plans for eco-friendly high speed rail service from Tampa to Orlando, the federal government has given the $2 billion dollars originally set aside for Florida to a number of other states to use to implement or improve their local environment by providing high speed rail service between major metropolitan areas, according to the Huffington Post. Governor Scott had rejected the plan for Florida, claiming concerns that it would obligate the state to pay subsidies for the rail service, in spite of contradictory reports that suggested the high speed rail service would be profitable in addition to providing a green transportation alternative to all. The education reform superstar presided over substantial test score irregularities during her term as D.C. schools chancellor, an investigation has found-but Dana Goldstein says the findings are no surprise. Plus, Diane Ravitch blasts Michelle Rhee.
Bad education policy is no excuse for cheating-especially cheating from principals and teachers, whom we hope will serve as role models for our kids. But the sad truth is that we shouldn't be surprised by USA Today's disheartening findings on test score irregularities in the Washington, D.C., public schools during the reign of Michelle Rhee, the firebrand former chancellor best known for firing teachers, closing underperforming schools, and linking teacher and principal pay to student test scores. Such irregularities are, in part, the unintended consequence of a spate of popular education reform policies that over-rationalize teaching and learning-both of which are creative processes-by measuring them almost exclusively through the results of multiple-choice standardized tests.

The No Child Left Behind Act has been deadly to public education. So why has the president embraced it? In this week's Newsweek, Diane Ravitch delves deep into Obama's education policy.

Prisoner reentry was turned into a political football in Florida on Wednesday when newly elected Governor Rick Scott, at the urging of State Attorney General Pam Bondi, swiftly changed the rules governing when felons' rights are restored in the state after they're released from prison. Moving with speed characteristic of tin-horn dictators in banana republics, Scott and the Florida cabinet imposed a five-year wait period on restoring many rights to individuals convicted of nonviolent crimes,...

Students First, her new interest group/political lobby, will push her brand of change--and seek to raise $1 billion for the cause.
Over the past couple of months, the education world has been rife with speculation and rumor about what Michelle Rhee, whose rocky but groundbreaking three-year tenure as D.C. schools chancellor ended Oct. 31, would do next. Among the jobs mentioned: New Jersey education commissioner. Newark, New Jersey, schools superintendent (someone needs to spend Mark Zuckerberg's $100 million). Head of the NYC Department of Education (one particularly juicy conspiracy theory posited that Cathie Black, Michael Bloomberg's surprise choice to head the DoE, was just a decoy paving the way for Rhee, who would look totally overqualified by comparison). Last week, after Rhee agreed to join the transition team for Florida Governor-elect Rick Scott, the chatter was that she would soon become that state's education chief.
So which job would it be?...

The so-called ground zero mosque recently applied for a $5 million federal grant from a fund designed to rebuild lower Manhattan after 9/11, reports The Daily Beast's John Avlon.
Developers of the controversial Park51 Islamic community center and mosque located two blocks from ground zero earlier this month applied for roughly $5 million in federal grant money set aside for the redevelopment of lower Manhattan after the attacks of September 11, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the matter.

The audacious move stands to reignite the embers of a divisive debate that dominated headlines surrounding the ninth anniversary of the attacks this fall, say people vested in the issue.
The application was submitted under a "community and cultural enhancement" grant program administered by the Lower Manhattan Redevelopment Corporation (Lmdc), which oversaw the $20 billion in federal aid allocated in the wake of 9/11 and is...

Earlier this week, Florida gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink was caught checking a smart phone during a commercial break in her debate with Republican Rick Scott. This violated an agreement the candidates had made about not checking any electronic devices during the debate.
On 'Hardball With Chris Matthews' (weeknights, 5Pm Et on MSNBC) Wednesday, Matthews asked Sink about the incident, and she offered this explanation.
"What happened was ... the make-up artist held up her phone and said, 'I just got this message. I don't know who it's from.'"
"So I looked at it because, you know, I'm a mom. My instinct is, my daughter's in Europe. I don't know who this message is from, I glance at it, I didn't understand ... what it was, so I just Ignored it."
But, as Matthews revealed on Thursday's show, Sink knew exactly who it was from. CNN boosted the audio from the raw feed,...

Today’s Wall Street Journal examines the phenomenon of the chief executive candidate: the enterprising businessmen and women who forsake capitalism for the campaign trail. “A hunger for fresh faces, especially among Republicans, has propelled a bumper crop of novice politicians into the electoral fray,” the Journal reports. “Prominent among the rookies are several CEO candidates running on their business resumes.” Recall the recent primary victories of former Hewlett-Packard C.E.O./Republican senate nominee Carly Fiorina, former eBay C.E.O./Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman, and health-care executive/Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Scott. Will 2012 become a banner year for business barons? Taking our cues from the Vanity Fair 2010 New Establishment list, we drafted a troupe of potential politicos from the pool of powers-that-be.

The name Jennifer Carroll may not be known by many outside of Jacksonville, Florida, but things are about to change now that the state's Republican gubernatorial candidate, Rick Scott, has chosen her as his running mate. Carroll, a 20-year Navy veteran and Trinidadian immigrant, was already the state's only Black state legislator. To date she is the only Black women to be part of a statewide ticket, and if elected, Carroll would become the state's first Black lieutenant governor... Here's what you had to say: Stephanie commented via Facebook: "Trying to divide the "black" vote. Not surprised." Elaine wrote via Facebook: "I'm happy for her, however I don't think he's the right candidate for her to run with!"...

• The Democratic National Committee issued a sarcastic statement saying that “the shell of a politician that was once John McCain” won the Republican Arizona Senate primary. In other election results: Florida Congressman Kendrick Meek defeated real-estate mogul Jeff Greene in the Democratic Senate primary; former health-care executive Rick Scott defeated Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum in Florida’s Republican gubernatorial primary; Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, in a race that is too close to call, is in danger of losing her seat to Tea Party candidate Joe Miller. [HuffPo, NY Times] • Jimmy Carter arrived in North Korea today to secure the release of an American who snuck into the country under the delusion that he could somehow do some good there. [Bloomberg] • The C.I.A. has concluded that the Al-Qaeda affiliate based in Yemen, called Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, is now more dangerous than the main Al-Qaeda group based in Pakistan. Apparently New York gubernatorial candidate Rick Lazio is taking his campaigning cues from Florida gubernatorial candidate Rick Scott and decided the ginned up controversy over the Lower Manhattan mosque would make for a great campaign ad platform. Of course, Rick Lazio actually lives in New York, which makes it hard to tell whether the use of 9/11 imagery in a campaign ad attacking Dem candidate Andrew Cuomo is better or worse. I'm going to say worse.
