The Las Culturistas Culture Awards, hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, is moving to the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn for its third annual show satirizing and celebrating moments in culture that could only be dreamt up on their podcast.
The ceremony, which will take place June 15, typically consists of 100 categories brainstormed by Yang and Rogers, with some mainstays including record of the year and the Cate Blanchett award for good acting. The “fake awards show” is meant to poke fun at the big awards shows of the year and has included musical performances, celebrity appearances and video acceptance speeches from the likes of Blanchett (a winner in her own category) and Taylor Swift (a two-time winner, including in the category of Best Taylor Swift).
As for whether Swift could be a participant in this year’s ceremony, Rogers and Yang are leaving the option open.

This weekend, Ramy Youssef became the first Egyptian named Ramy from New Jersey to ever host Saturday Night Live, and one of the night’s highlight sketches took aim at a beloved cultural mainstay: NPR’s Tiny Desk concerts.
The sketch featured Youssef as the leader of a band that gets to “quirk it up” on Tiny Desk, even having their cellist (Chloe Troast) playing a milk carton as a shaker for the occasion. As they begin performing, though, they are interrupted by Bowen Yang (playing a 35-year-old intern who attends “Suny Newark”), who asks them to “keep the ruckus down” because “some of us are working.”
The band, confused that their booking to play Bob Boilen’s iconic desk at the NPR office has gone awry, tries to continue, but is again interrupted by Yang’s character (who is on an “important Zoom” with “Glass and Gross” in the...

Tonight on SNL, Ramy Youssef appeared in a sketch parodying NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts series.
After singing a line from a song, alongside band mates played by Chloe Troast and James Austin Johnson, he tells a crowd assembled for the performance, “Thank you so much NPR. We are the Jonah Hughes Band. Now, that last one usually contains a lot more synth, but since this is a Tiny Desk concert, we’ve got to be quirking it up.”
“Yep,” says Troast. “That’s why I play a milk carton shaker.”
Youssef explains that Troast is usually on the cello, adding, “We’ve never actually played in an office before, like a real one, but being here is a dream come true.”
Before segueing into the band’s next song, “Crazy Girl, Amanda,” Youssef is interrupted by Bowen Yang, playing an NPR staffer.
“Hey, guys. Can we be quiet please?...

1984 signaled the beginning of the “Coming of Age” trilogy that began with “A Summer in Grandpa's”. The film is based on Chu Tien Wen's childhood memories, one of the most renowned theatrical writers and novelists of the country. The protagonists are two kids, a fact that established Hou's ability to direct kid actors. The movie won a Best Director award at the 1984 Asia-Pacific Film Festival, the Golden Montgolfiere award (tied with The Runner (1984)) at the 1985 Nantes Three Continents Festival, and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury – Special Mention at the 1985 Locarno International Film Festival. It was also the first work of the Taiwanese auteur to screen in the US, in 1986. Also of note is the fact that Hou cast Edward Yang in a brief role, with Yang returning the favor by casting Hou in his film “Taipei Story”

With so few episodes in the season, should we have more plot movement?
It's one of many questions that crossed our round table's mind after Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 2.
It was an episode in which very little happened to move the plot along, but Lucas and Simone called it quits, and a lonely Amelia bounced around.
Join TV Fanatics Haley Whitmire White, Lucy Peel, and Jasmine Blu as they break down the hour.
Join the discussion below!
How do you feel about this episode and the minimal plot development? Do you enjoy episodes that focus on cases and character-building?
Haley: It's funny — while I was watching it, I was taking mental notes in preparation for our round table, and I was thinking, "Wow, this episode is Boring."
Normally, I'm fine with episodes that bring us into the Grey's universe without any dramatic events, but come on, it's a short season!

The move in recent years to make the Oscars a truly global event in terms of the membership drive by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has paid off particularly well this year: Eligible voters from a record 93 countries submitted ballots in the Academy Awards’ nominating round, which ended Tuesday at 5 p.m. Pt.
That number is up significantly from last year’s 79 countries. The Academy also said it broke the overall turnout record for all members participating — and by a significant margin.
Academy president Janet Yang and CEO Bill Kramer shared the news with members Wednesday in an email while further encouraging them to tune in to the nomination announcement January 23 at 5:30 a.m. Pt/8:30 a.m. Et, and also to make a major effort to see all the nominated films before final balloting begins February 22.

Ziwe has found her latest iconic guest: George Santos.
After teasing a collab with the expelled congressman, comedian and celebrity interviewer Ziwe released her sit-down interview with Santos on YouTube on Monday morning.
Ziwe’s “Znn” interview, a CNN spoof with her own Ziwe News Network, began with onscreen text saying “No congressman were paid in the making of this interview even though George asked three times.” She then listed civil rights icons and asked Santos to say what they meant to him. The list included Marsha P. Johnson, James Baldwin, Harvey Milk and Bowen Yang’s “SNL” impression of Santos — which he said deserves an Egot.
When asked if he would want Yang to play him in HBO’s movie about him, Santos said “that movie is not ever going to happen. That book has no perspective of me or anybody close to me. It’s fucking fiction,” referring...

In the new episode of Saturday Night Live, former Rep. George Santos (R-New York) was satirized for his expulsion from Congress.
The skit included a mock press conference and a musical performance.
The cold open started with an announcement about a breaking news press conference from the Capitol delivered by Sarah Sherman’s portrayal of CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.
The scene shifted to Santos, played by Bowen Yang, who called the press conference on the day that followed his expulsion.
Yang’s character stated, “This entire country has been bullying me just because I am a proud gay thief,” a reference to the House Ethics Committee’s discovery last month, which revealed that Santos had unlawfully used campaign funds for personal benefit and deceived donors.
Santos has pleaded not guilty to 23 criminal counts on the allegations that he misled donors, unlawfully received unemployment benefits and charged his donors’ credit cards without authorization.

He may be the world’s greatest living filmmaker, and now we know we’ve seen his last film.
Hou Hsiao-hsien, director of timeless masterpieces such as “A City of Sadness,” “The Puppetmaster,” “Flowers of Shanghai,” and “Millennium Mambo” is battling dementia and is now retired from filmmaking. The 76-year-old Taiwanese auteur had been hoping to make his long-in-development film “Shulan River” up until the past couple years, and location scouting had begun. Now, 2015’s “The Assassin” will stand as his final film.
The news broke that Hou is now retired via film scholar Tony Rayns’ introduction to a screening of his 1985 film “A Time to Live and a Time to Die” at the Garden Cinema in London on October 23. IndieWire has since confirmed the news with a source close to Hou as well as with the film curator of the Garden Cinema, George Crosthwait, who said that the director “will certainly not work again.

Saturday Night Live castmembers kicked off season 49’s second episode with a satirical take on Republicans’ current chaos in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The cold open saw Mikey Day’s Rep. Jim Jordan distraught after his bid for House Speaker failed for a third time. After Kevin McCarthy was ousted as House Speaker last month, Republicans have been sinking deeper into turmoil amid their division on who should claim the spot. On Friday, Republicans abruptly decided to drop Jordan, an ally of Donald Trump, as their nominee.
“How did I lose? This is chaos,” Day’s Jordan says. “Some of us are here to actually serve the American people. All I want to do is get Congress back to work so I can shut it down again.”

“Saturday Night Live” took aim at Jim Jordan’s (Mike Day) failed bid for Speaker of the House, with the Republican being consoled by George Santos (Bowen Yang), Lauren Boebert (Chloe Fineman) and Donald Trump (James Austin Johnson).
“How did I lose? This is chaos,” Day’s Jordan says. “Some of us are here to actually serve the American people. All I want to do is get Congress back to work so I can shut it down again.”
Moments later, he’s visited by Santos, who has come to cheer him up with a baby in hand.
“I just wanted to say how sorry I am. But I want you to know I voted for you and get this, so did Shawna Loggins,” Yang said.
“Who’s that?,” Day replies, to which Yang responds: “Also me.”

“Yo-hoo, is this the loser’s room?” asked James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live’s cold open tonight. “Don’t we love our country, what an awful place it is,” he said later in the skit, nailing the ex-real estate mogul and one of the better political cold opens SNL has had in a long time.
Crashing a one-man pity party by Mikey Day’s phone-breaking Rep. Jim Jordan (R-oh), Johnson’s ever better Trump mocked the never-was Speaker of the House for being rejected by his fellow Republicans. Stressing he “prefers the Jordans who win,” SNL’s Trump blew his own horn on what a great Speaker he would be, as some of the GOP wingnuts have suggested.
“Sadly, I’ll be too busy campaigning,” Johnson mimicked as the much indicted former and perhaps future Potus. “Traveling from city to city, visiting their beautiful courtrooms.

Yang Xiaopei came to Cannes this year hoping to alter what she sees as a commonly held perception about what Chinese content creators can offer the global market.
Much has already been made about China’s epics, its tales of high romance and action set in ancient worlds amongst stunning costumes. While the country’s creators are sure to still play to those strengths going forward, Yang is part of a growing generation of studio heads who want to also share stories of contemporary China with the world.
“The diversification and caliber of Chinese series are flourishing,” says Yang, the founder and CEO of the Shanghai-based Xixi Pictures. “Outside of historical dramas, contemporary urban series have surged in popularity in China thanks to their relevance and thematic richness.”

Have you watched the trailer for Dicks: The Musical? Even if you have, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Yes, there are musical numbers, many involving genital discussion, and they even have “Sewer Boys.” From Larry Charles comes a wild little film from A24. Inspired by the talents of Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson, the film also stars the legendary Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally. Both of these pros add a whole lot of crazy to this R-rated musical. Get ready for a whole lot of dick jokes, songs, and a few unmentionables.

First up it was Charles, Jackson, Sharp, and Bowen Yang. Mr. Yang plays God. It is discussed. And yes, it was kind of fantastic chatting it up with the four of them.

Taking their locally legendary sketch show from a cramped stage beneath a Chelsea grocery store to movie theaters across America, the only thing Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp couldn’t save was its original title.
“In 20 years, when the culture has changed, we’ll put out a director’s cut,” Sharp joked to IndieWire in a deep dive with Jackson ahead of the pair’s feature film debut. “The movie will be the exact same, just with the name ‘Fucking Identical Twins.’”
The creative partners’ basement triumph, better known these days by the only slightly more family-friendly moniker “Dicks: The Musical,” was stuck in Hollywood development for over a decade. Now, it’s A24’s scrappy first stab at the song-and-dance genre: a raunchy-bordering-on-rancid “Parent Trap” redux born out of the Upright Citizens Brigade, with Jackson and Sharp playing opposite bonafide Broadway legends Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally.

FX released the official trailer for “American Horror Stories” Season 3, the spin-off of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s anthology series “American Horror Story.” The spin-off features a different horror story in each episode.
The trailer revealed that “Real Housewives” alum Lisa Rinna will star in the “Tapeworm” episode of Season 3, which premieres Oct. 26. The official logline for that installment reads, “An up-and-coming model will stop at nothing in her hunger for success.” The episode was written by Joe Baken and directed by Alexis Martin Woodall.
“Smize for the camera, sweetie,” Rinna’s character says in the trailer. She later responds to a young patient’s concern about a monster inside of her with the question, “But are you hungry?”
Alongside Rinna, the “Tapeworm” cast includes Laura Kariuki, Hazel Graye and Rob Yang.
From the trailer, it looks like Yang prescribes Kariuki’s model a tapeworm to help her lose weight for her modeling career.

“Saturday Night Live” had more than one surprise appearance in its first show back, including one from none other than Taylor Swift. But they also welcomed Christopher Columbus, who came with an important message: It’s Ok to start taking down statues of him.
Well, sure, it wasn’t actually Columbus. It was Bowen Yang playing the infamous explorer. He was invited on by Michael Che and Colin Jost as part of a segment about Indigenous Peoples Day.
As he greeted the audience, Columbus promptly informed Che that he was the explorer’s second favorite comedian — but not behind Jost. Then he got into the Statue thing.
Che was quick to point out the fact that Columbus didn’t truly discover America, and pointed out that many in the world would prefer that statues of him be taken down, considering Columbus’ bloody history in the new world.

Che was quick to point out the fact that Columbus didn’t truly discover America, and pointed out that many in the world would prefer that statues of him be taken down, considering Columbus’ bloody history in the new world.

It’s been a long six months since Saturday Night Live cut it’s season short due to the writers’ strike, and a lot has happened since. Fortunately, they brought back Pete Davidson to host – he was originally scheduled for back in May – and he is the ideal personality to tackle the Barbie phenomenon. (Watch how Davidson somberly opened the season premiere.)
It’s the perfect bookend for SNL. Their final pre-strike episode featured an American Girls doll sketch somewhat based on the Barbie trailer. Now they’ve got a spot-on parody of Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” from the movie,...

Updated with new promos below: Pete Davidson looks right at home in his return to Saturday Night Live. SNL has released the first official promo featuring the SNL alum, who returns this weekend as host following a months-long strike delay.
Watch it above and three shorter new ones below.
In the teaser clip, returning SNL cast members Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang enter an empty Studio 8H, exchanging stories about their summers. “Oh, it’s so good to be back,” says Yang to which Fineman agrees. Fineman shares she “actually met my birth mom” over the summer, and Yang says he “watched all of Suits.”
Enter Davidson who’s munching on a bag of potato chips.
Davidson looks at home because apparently he is, telling his former castmates he’s “livin’ here” while his apartment is under construction.
Only cast or hosts are allowed in the studio, Fineman tells him.

The first time director Larry Charles was invited to the Toronto International Film Festival, he brought along a little something called Borat, which, despite enduring an extended projector breakdown 20 minutes into its premiere screening, emerged as a word-of-mouth sensation. Now, some 17 years later, Charles has returned to the festival’s Midnight Madness section with Dicks: The Musical, which not only screened without a technical hitch, but emerges as a certified wave-maker in its own right.
Created by and starring Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, making the transition from a 30-minute, six-song play called F*cking Identical Twins — mounted in the basement home of New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade — to a feature-length, all-singing, all-dancing, naughty goof on The Parent Trap, the movie packs an infectious albeit ephemeral punch.

Hot off “Dicks: The Musical’s” premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, A24 has released the song “All Love is Love” from the film.
Performed by Aaron Jackson, Josh Sharp, Bowen Yang, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally and featuring vocalist Lauren Evans, “All Love Is Love” is one of the musical’s many songs that could be submitted for original song consideration at the Oscars.
The song was composed by “Moulin Rouge’s” Marius de Vries and Karl Saint Lucy, and co-written with the film’s writers and stars Jackson and Sharp.
“Dicks: the Musical” is a wild and raunchy comedy starring Jackson and Sharp as antagonistic businessmen and long-lost twins with a plan to trick their separated parents. Lane and Mullally play the separated parents who the twins try to trick into getting back together. Flesh-eating sewer monsters, genitals with wings, grave robbing, two confused “identical twins” and 90 minutes of sexual innuendo is what you can expect from comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp’s stage show-turned-movie. Directed by Larry Charles and written by and starring the duo, the film also features Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Megan Thee Stallion and Bowen Yang. As a viewer, I often wondered how the hell this got turned into the movie because it is so outrageous. Thankfully, it succeeds at being fun and funny because anything less would have amounted to torture.
In a wicked exploration of twinhood and identity, we’re introduced to the not-so-identical twins, Craig (Sharp) and Trevor (Jackson). These two have a rather crazed introduction, diving headfirst into the world of aggressive heterosexuality. Back in the early ’90s, a New Jersey-based company called GoodTimes Entertainment carved out a place for itself in the home-video space churning out straight-to-video knockoffs of Disney animated features. While “The Lion King” was in theaters, there was GoodTimes’ “Leo the Lion: King of the Jungle” on retail shelves, packaged (for maximum mix-uppability) in Disney’s signature white clamshell case. From a copyright perspective, GoodTimes’ strategy was super-sketchy, but as far as parents were concerned, it was easy to get confused — and most kids probably didn’t know the difference.
That bait-and-switch phenomenon crossed my mind when I saw that Netflix was making “The Monkey King,” which — like GoodTimes’ “Aladdin” or “The Little Mermaid” — was certainly fair game, since the source material (the 16th-century Chinese classic “Journey to the West”) was squarely in the public domain. The cynical part of my brain instantly imagined that the streamer was churning...

The spy-action genre of movies is already filled with a ridiculously high number of entries; therefore, for newer releases to even have a chance at staying relevant, an out-of-the-box element is required. The recently released Netflix spy caper Heart Of Stone strictly follows the copybook method of building and resolving intrigue and, as a result, refrains from venturing into riskier territory. Revolving around a secret espionage agency and an overpowered AI tool that could be the key to world domination, the movie treads a very familiar track throughout. With that being said, narrative structure-wise, the easily discernible similarities allow viewers to point out a number of movies and series it has taken inspiration from, a lot of which we think you might enjoy if you liked Heart Of Stone.

Netflix’s Heart of Stone, helmed by Tom Harper, has been generating many expectations as a powerful contender for this year’s blockbuster action thriller, opposite Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning. Although the former didn’t make much of a stir, the film deftly delivered an enthralling narrative, a continent hopping experience with its stellar cast, and a suspenseful storyline with a lot of climactic twists. This highly anticipated action thriller explores the world of revolutionary A.I. technology and its potential to change the fate of the world while also diving into the intriguing relationships between these characters that shape the core of the film.
The central figures of Rachel and Parker come to life through the skilled performances of Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan. These interesting characters in the film have a complicated arc, focusing on their relentless efforts to protect the A.I. device “The Heart” from enemies.

If the artists’ strike and warnings of the majority of the intelligentsia don’t manage to shake the corporate giants out of their complacency regarding the aggressive advancement of all-pervasive technology, perhaps the recent swathe of spy flicks will. Netflix’s recent release, Heart of Stone, is probably the third movie in this single month that revolves around an omnipresent tech McGuffin.
In all seriousness, aside from playing on tried (read tired) and tested genre tropes of spy-action movies, and despite following the recent tendencies of throwing around characters with exposition-filled backstories, Heart of Stone proves to be a fun watch due to its effort to anchor an emotional weight through the narrative. If Heart of Stone has any distinctive visual moments, they all involve a supercomputer called the Heart. The Heart appears in the form of holographic images surrounding operator the Jack of Hearts (Matthias Schweighöfer), who moves around digital objects and zooms in on key details by waving his hands and touching objects. Yes, we’ve seen many similar depictions of supercomputers ever since Tom Cruise stared intensely at future crimes in 2002’s Minority Report and Tony Stark threw hot rod red on his suit in 2008’s Iron Man. Heck, we’ve seen Jeff Goldblum wave his shockingly large hands around cg-landscapes in apartment commercials.
To his credit though, director Tom Harper doesn’t treat the visuals as anything groundbreaking or particularly exciting. It’s just shorthand for superspy technology. In fact, everything in Heart of Stone is superspy shorthand—a recitation of ideas and characters that we’ve seen time and again.

If there’s one thing to know about MI6 agent Rachel Stone (Gal Gadot), it’s that she’s meant to stay in the van. In Tom Harper’s new action thriller “Heart of Stone,” there are spies in the field and spies who drive, but some spies are just supposed to sit behind a computer screen reading fast-scrolling lines of code and hacking into mainframes. It’s possible this seems a little implausible, knowing what we know about star Gal Gadot’s star persona, and that’s because it is: Rachel Stone of MI6 is not who she says she is.
Stone really belongs to another spy organization — the Charter — designed to correct the wrongs of government-affiliated spy organizations by doing the same work only under the guidance of an AI tool known as the “Heart.” When Stone is out in the field she’s given pathways of most probable success,...

Netflix clearly is determined to play the major-studio game of big, star-driven action franchises. Extraction, its current sequel, another Russo Brothers’ franchise The Gray Man (with the promise of more), Red Notice and many others represent big-screen-type entertainment designed ultimately for people to watch on their couches at home.
This kind of stuff, while skillfully and expensively executed, still works best at Imax rather than your living room, but the streamer is convinced that it will goose subscriptions, so expect more of movies like Heart of Stone, a convoluted spy thriller loaded with James Bond-style action set pieces but with a wonder woman in the name of Gal Gadot in the center of it all. Taking a cue from Charlize Theron’s Netflix franchise The Old Guard, this is a female-driven enterprise where the men, namely Jamie Dornan’s complicated bad guy, take a back seat for the most part.

Netflix tries muscling in on the Mission: Impossible game with the adrenaline-charged spy thriller Heart of Stone, built as a vehicle for Gal Gadot (one of the producers) to swap superheroics for a more earthbound combo of brains, tech savvy, instinct and formidable fight skills. While it’s a few notches up from the Wonder Woman star’s last action romp for the streamer, Red Notice, it feels only marginally less manufactured from the spare parts of other movies. But it gets the job done and is sure to pull solid numbers. It doesn’t hurt that Gadot has appealing chemistry with co-star Jamie Dornan.
The timing seems mildly unfortunate given that the most recent M:i installment, Dead Reckoning, hit theaters only a month ago and also revolves around a risibly named AI mega-brain, “The Entity,” which nefarious forces are angling to control.

Prannoy, world No. 9 in the badminton rankings, was aiming to win his second Bwf World Tour title after his maiden triumph at the Malaysia Masters Super 500 in May. World No. 24 Weng Hong Yang started the match on the front foot but Prannoy used his experience well to stay on the Chinese shuttler’s heels.
However, with the scores level at 5-all, Yang pulled away to build up a five-point lead heading into the first break. After the restart, Yang clicked into a higher gear and raced away to take the game.

Bowen Yang is trying to get back on the horse after a production mishap.
The “SNL” star detailed how while filming “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens” Season 3, he “almost died” after a horse he was riding was spooked at the sight of a drone.
“Actually, [it’s] not fun to be on a horse,” Yang said during his “Las Culturistas” podcast. “[I’ve] ridden a horse for camera. Guess what? This crew, and I love this crew, but this crew decided to have a drone, and of course the horse don’t know what the fuck that is, and then I almost died.”
He continued, “I almost died in Iceland! Even hundreds of yards away, these horses can clock. They were spooked and then I almost [fell off]. I almost got bucked, and there was part of me, though, that was like, ‘This is a good way to go.'”

A horse is a horse, of course, of course. And riding them can be a challenge, as Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang recalled on a recent episode of his Las Culturistas podcast.
Yang’s experience with death by horse came while riding horseback on the set of Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens in Iceland.
“Actually, not fun, not fun to be on a horse,” Yang said. “[I’ve] ridden a horse for camera. Guess what? This crew, and I love this crew, but this crew decided to have a drone, and of course the horse don’t know what the f— that is, and then I almost died.”
“I didn’t tell you this?” Yang then asked his cohost, Matt Rogers, and their guest star Patrick Rogers. “I almost died in Iceland!”
A drone flew too close to the horse Yang was riding, spooking it.
