February is the cruelest month for new film releases, and director Tate Taylor’s “Breaking News in Yuba County” is easily one of the worst cinematic gestures of the year so far. Allison Janney, Regina Hall, Juliette Lewis, and a cast of many more familiar (and typically welcome) faces lead a big ensemble of unlikable, unsympathetic characters in . It’s the kind of movie that seems to suck your soul out while you’re watching it, variably crass and slapstick humor landing with a bloody thud.
Perhaps some audiences will jive to the plot holes visible from outer space that perforate this movie written by “South Park” story editor Amanda Idoko, but Taylor does not understand how to make a pileup of errors and misunderstandings amid a folksy collective work the same way that, say, the Coen brothers do. Still, actors clearly enjoy working with the “Get on Up” and “The Help” filmmaker,...

In her new movie “Breaking News In Yuba County,” Allison Janney plays Sue Buttons, a suburban housewife whose husband has just gone missing. And as the media, the cops, a mobster and her brother-in-law all come knocking, something is definitely fishy — but Janney has “done nothing wrong.” Honest.
“Ma” and “The Help” filmmaker Tate Taylor directs “Breaking News In Yuba County,” and the first trailer shows a wacky, madcap crime film in the vein of a Coen Brothers satire.
For instance, it’s generally not a good idea to go to the media first instead of the police if someone is really missing. And though Janney’s character might appear panicked, she’s certainly enjoying the newfound attention as everyone hunts for the truth.
“I am strong. I am important. I am enough. Don’t you think so?” a frazzled Janney says in the trailer. “I’ve done nothing wrong.

An unexpected disappearance turns into a small town free-for-all in the new trailer for Tate Taylor’s Breaking News in Yuba County, which is set to arrive digitally and in select theaters February 12th.
The film stars Allison Janney as Sue Buttons, an under-appreciated suburban housewife who becomes an empathetic local celebrity overnight after her husband suddenly goes missing. While Sue relishes her newfound fame — spurred in part by coverage provided by her half-sister, a local news reporter played by Mila Kunis — the disappearance uncorks a deeper mystery involving a wide array of unique characters.

"Head straight there, don't slow down, I'll handle the Mtf." Time to ride into the future. Talented visual storyteller Joe Sill has dropped a new short film online. His latest project is called Autonomous, a proof-of-concept short for a bigger project created using CG animation. The film is an animated cyberpunk thriller centered around a motorcycle gang of traffickers in a world of autonomous vehicles. Yuri and her brother Nyx face off against the Metro Task Force as they transport an important package to a client. Featuring the voices of: Liz Morey, Keong Sim, Joe Biacno, Lulu Picart, Kaylin Lee Clinton, Shawn Williams, Steven Sherman. This reminds me a bit of the motorcycle CG short Ruin years ago, which was filmmaker Wes Ball's big break into the industry. This one has a whole different look and feel, but is just as impressive and as sleek as Ruin. I love the vehicle designs in this,...

Christina Applegate is nominated for Best Comedy Lead Actress for her role as grieving widow Jen Harding on Netflix’s “Dead to Me.” This marks Applegate’s third nomination in this category, having earned back-to-back nominations in 2008 and 2009 for “Samantha Who?” She earned two additional nominations for Best Comedy Guest Actress for her recurring role on “Friends,” winning the Emmy in 2003. Applegate has submitted the episode “I’ve Gotta Get Away” for Emmy consideration.
The episode centers around Jen and best friend Judy (Linda Cardellini) as they attend a grief retreat in Palm Springs with their therapy group. Judy takes the retreat very seriously, but Jen has only two things on her mind: alcohol and seducing Jason (Steve Howey), a hunky widower from Las Vegas. Despite repeated run-ins with their group leader Pastor Wayne (Keong Sim), Jen rejects any kind of therapeutic help in favor of free margaritas.

Ask Natasha Kingston (Yara Shahidi) who she adores, and she’ll answer astronomer Carl Sagan, whose presence hovers like Cupid over Ry Russo-Young’s winsome and intelligent teen romance “The Sun Is Also a Star,” based on the bestselling Ya novel by Nicola Yoon. Like Sagan, Natasha is rational and trusts only in the scientific method. Love, she insists, is “legit dead-ass not real” — or at least, it’s not provable — until Natasha cosmically collides with moony high schooler Daniel Bae (Charles Melton) when her baseball jacket embroidered “Deus Ex Machina” catches the would-be poet’s attention.
Alas, tomorrow, Ins is scheduled to deport Natasha, an undocumented Jamaican. Between appointments with her immigration lawyer (John Leguizamo), the strangers have one day to wander the city debating their destiny, during which Daniel takes his cues from the New York Times’ viral 2015 Modern Love column “To Fall in Love With Anyone, Do This.

"What if I told you I could get you to fall in love with me...?" Warner Bros has debuted the first trailer for a romantic drama titled The Sun Is Also a Star, the latest from director Ry Russo-Young. Adapted from the novel of the same name, the film is about a young woman who falls for a sweet-talking charmer on the day before she is to be deported back to her native country of Jamaica. Set in New York City, Yara Shahidi (from "Black-ish" and "Grown-ish") stars as Natasha, and Charles Melton as Daniel Bae, the guy who woos her. Also starring John Leguizamo, Hill Harper, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Camrus Johnson, Jake Choi, Keong Sim, and Cathy Shim. This looks like a gorgeous film, and I dig all the nerdy science and space talk in this. Might just be a winner based on the footage in here. Take a look.

David E. Kelley has one of the most singular voices in TV today -- it usually only takes a minute or less to realize you're watching one of his shows, and medical drama "Monday Mornings" is no exception.
Kelley used to be one of the biggest showrunners in network TV. After collecting a boatload of Emmys for "Picket Fences," he went on to create hits in "Chicago Hope," "Ally McBeal" and "The Practice." He also had a few high-profile flops, but it wasn't until the consecutive cancellations of "Boston Legal" and "Harry's Law" -- both victims of their older-skewing demographics -- and a futile attempt to get a "Wonder Woman" pilot off the ground, that it made sense for Kelley to test the waters of cable TV.

If you dread Monday mornings, you might feel better upon seeing how the doctors in a new drama series start their weeks.
Based on a novel by Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, TNT's "Monday Mornings" -- executive produced by David E. Kelley ("Boston Legal," "Ally McBeal") and appropriately premiering on a Monday, Feb. 4 -- centers on a ritual for the surgeons at a Portland, Ore., hospital. Each Monday, Chelsea General's quietly fearsome chief of staff (played by Alfred Molina) cross-examines them about operations they've performed ... with the questioning particularly intense if they were unsuccessful.
Jamie Bamber ("Battlestar Galactica") and Jennifer Finnigan ("Better With You") portray two of the doctors, whose personal involvement makes them even more a mutual support system in the face of being interrogated on their professional decisions and actions. Ving Rhames ("Pulp Fiction") also stars as the hospital's trauma chief, with Bill Irwin, Emily Swallow,...

God complex anyone? Jamie Bamber's character Dr. Tyler Wilson
gets knocked off his pedestal in the Monday Mornings pilot.
For most of us, Monday mornings are when we drag ourselves out of weekend mode and get back to the grind of our respective jobs. On the new David E. Kelley-created medical drama, Monday Mornings are the time when the doctors at the fictional Chelsea General Hospital in Portland, Oregon must defend themselves on the decisions and actions made that have often lead to huge mistakes and, in the worst cases, death.
The series was born out of the book of the same name by Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who is also Executive Producer of the series. Kelley, of course, brought us memorable series like Ally McBeal, Picket Fences and Boston Legal, and this marks his first made-for-cable series. Chicago – David E. Kelley is one of the most influential and important TV voices of the modern era with massive hits like “L.A. Law,” “Picket Fences,” “Chicago Hope,” “The Practice,” “Ally McBeal,” “Boston Public,” and “Boston Legal”. However, it’s been a few years and a few failures for Kelley in the recent past and he’s overdue for another hit. Maybe it will be TNT’s “Monday Mornings,” premiering tonight and delivering in unexpectedly successful ways.
Television Rating: 4.0/5.0
I approached “Monday Mornings” with serious trepidation, exhausted by the seemingly neverending cycle of crappy medical dramas (recent entries include “The Mob Doctor,” “Saving Hope,” and even sorta “Do No Harm”). Another medical drama. Woohoo. And the opening beats of this intense look into the life of neurosurgeons based on the novel by CNN correspondent Sanjay Gupta felt overly familiar. And then “Monday Mornings” started to work on me. The ensemble...

The new medical drama from David E. Kelly may be innocuously titled Monday Mornings, but it is anything but benign. In fact, it aims right for the jugular with storylines intent on piercing even the most hardened of hearts. Monday Mornings seeks to tell the internal trials which doctors face from their peers after a medical misstep, while providing a human face to back-dropped the problem from which it stemmed.
Co-created and executive produced by world-renown neurosurgeon Sanjay Gupta, the stories of Monday Mornings resonate with authenticity and humanity. The medical world may appear cold and clinical from the outside, but inside the operating rooms, in the waiting rooms, and in the doctor’s offices, life and death decisions are made each day. Many result in a favorable and happy ending. But then there are those decisions that make every doctor and surgeon question whether something more could have been done.

Chelsea General is home to some of the top surgeons in the world, thanks in large part to the hospital's notorious Monday morning morbidity and mortality ? or "311" ? conferences. In these legendary meetings, Chief of Staff Harding Hooten (Alfred Molina) leads a harsh, closed-door review of the complications encountered and mistakes made during the course of patient care. As the series opens, Trauma Chief Jorge Villanueva (Ving Rhames) treats what appears to be an attempted suicide by car only to discover that the crash victim suffered a life-threatening brain aneurysm. Renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Ty Wilson (Jamie Bamber) is shaken by the case of 11-year-old Quinn McDaniels (guest star Mason Cook), whose soccer injury reveals a much graver problem. Workaholic Dr. Sydney Napur (Sarayu Rao) solves a case that had the rest of the hospital staff stumped. Meanwhile, Dr. Sung Park (Keong Sim) performs high-tech deep brain stimulation on a patient with uncontrollable hand tremors.

Whereas many a standard-issue medical drama presents doctors as largely infallible heroes, TNT’s Monday Mornings — executive-produced by David E. Kelley and neurosurgeon/CNN correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, M.D. (on whose book the series is based) – spends more time on holding them accountable when things don’t go quite right or, worse, horribly wrong.

TNT is carving yet another slice out of the medical drama genre with "Monday Mornings" -- yet this new offering from über-producer David E. Kelley manages to be innovative and fresh, without any supernatural gimmicks for a change.
Adapted from the book by CNN chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta, who also serves as executive producer, "Mm" is the first series to take viewers inside the weekly Morbidity and Mortality conference (M&M), where surgeons answer for errors in patient care -- and in medicine, mistakes can mean death.
"That meeting is a hallowed space in medicine that very few people know about and very few people get to see," Gupta told reporters at the TCA Winter Press Tour Friday (Jan. 4).
"The spirit of it is that we learn," said Gupta. "As unsettling as it is to think about, these mistakes [and] unexpected outcomes get discussed openly -- and hopefully everyone can learn from it.

The tit-for-tat casting conflict continues between duelling White House action thrillers Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down. Today it's once again the turn of Millennium Films’ Olympus, with word that Melissa Leo and Rick Yune are signing on to play key roles.Antoine Fuqua is even now gearing up to start shooting the movie, which finds Gerard Butler’s former secret service agent called back to full duty when the President (Aaron Eckhart) and his staff are held hostage in the White House by Korean terrorists.Leo is on to play a tough-nosed secretary of defence, who doesn’t fare well when she falls into the clutches of the baddies. And those villains will be led by Yune, a North Korean posing as the aide to a visiting South Korean minister (Keong Sim). Turns out, the assistant is really a sociopathic sort with a serious dislike of the American administration.

TNT has ordered David E. Kelley's medical drama "Monday Mornings" to series, giving the prolific writer-producer his first show on cable.
The series, previously known as "Chelsea General," will debut next year on TNT and follow a group of doctors in their professional and personal lives, centering on their morbidity and mortality conferences that take place every Monday (hence the title). Kelley co-created the show with neurosurgeon and CNN regular Dr. Sanjay Gupta; it's based on Gupta's book of the same name.
The show stars Alfred Molina ("Law & Order: La"), Ving Rhames ("Mission: Impossible," "Pulp Fiction), Jamie Bamber ("Battlestar Galactica"), Jennifer Finnigan ("Better With You"), Keong Sim ("Glee"), Emily Swallow ("Southland," "Ringer"), Bill Irwin ("CSI") and Sarayu Rao ("Sons of Tucson").
"Monday Mornings" will be the first medical drama for TNT since it canceled "Hawthorne" last year. It's scheduled to premiere in summer 2013.

On the surface, the story of Watching TV with the Red Chinese is a simple one, documenting several months in the lives of literature teacher Dexter Mitchell (Ryan O’Nan), his on-again-off-again girlfriend Suzanne (Community’s Gillian Jacobs), and the three Chinese students (Leonardo Nam, James Chen, and Keong Sim) recently arrived to America who move into his building. But the film, based on the novel by Luke Whisnant, is a lot meatier at the core, serving as an examination of how we perceive ourselves and others through the veil of culture, both geographical and pop (with a side order of destiny...

So, if you care, you may have noticed there are no reviews for episodes two through four of this season. See, I wasn’t raised with the maxim “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” I was, however, taught that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result. Simply put, the last three episodes disappointed me so much that I just couldn’t write about them. The best I would’ve been able to say is that there were occasionally some cute moments, a few slight advances of character sub-plots and damn, that Dianna Agron sure is pretty, isn’t she?
For the most part, the past few hours have been stupid, bordering on offensive when not just-this-side of boring. The worst offenses? Quinn’s subplot this season is that she’s trying to get her daughter back from Shelby.

Fox Harry Shum Jr. as Mike Chang in “Glee.”
Count me among the legions of Asian American Gleeks who’ve been irritably waiting for show producers Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan to do something interesting with Harry Shum Jr.’s peripatetic footballer-turned-dance machine, Mike Chang. Really, RyBrI: After two years of back-bench toil as the mostly mute “Other Asian,” there isn’t a performer on the show who’s earned a turn in the spotlight more than Harry.

Glee’s third season is putting a bit more emphasis on family than it has in the past with the addition of guest stars to play the parents of characters like Emma (Jayma Mays). This likely means that Will and Emma’s relationship will be taking a serious step forward if he’s meeting her folks. On the other hand, it might be an impromptu visit and Emma wants to hide her family away from everyone. Either scenario should make for some good tension.
It was TV Guide reporting that Don Most and Valerie Mahaffey would be playing the roles of Rusty and Rose Pillsbury respectively. What a lovely ginger family! I’m wondering if either of them shares any of Emma’s obsessive tendencies. Most is best known for playing Ralph Malph on Happy Days, while Mahaffey has received an Emmy nomination for her supporting role as Eve on Northern Exposure.
