Toro Toro Toro: Amamra Grabs the Bull By the Horns in Transformative Role
For those who champion the bull in Spain’s electrifying yet antiquated tradition of the running of the bulls, there’s a fresh perspective awaiting in a genre-blending narrative that redefines and realigns the boundaries between genders and species. Departing from her beginnings in young adult romantic comedy with Fragile (2021), French-Algerian filmmaker Emma Benestan reunites with Oulaya Amamra for their third collaboration—a sophomore film that exudes a Cocteau-esque spirit with hints of whac-a-mole horror genre elements. An exploration of crossed boundaries and crossing over, Animale is reminiscent of last year’s Le Règne animal and especially Julia Ducournau’s Raw, despite embracing what is a familiar, well-trodden path, we find a fresh take on violence as redemption and salvation.…...

The prestigious Cannes Film Festival witnesses several features each year, but only a handful of them manage to create an impression and earn a standing ovation worthwhile of talking. While the debate about whether the length of standing ovations at the festival is directly proportionate to its quality or not is an ongoing debate, the length is nonetheless a part of popular tradition and to some degree provides a measurement of the film’s future success.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Furiosa, the prequel to the Oscar-winning Mad Max: Fury Road, recently received an incredible almost 8-minute long-standing ovation. But it might feel nothing when compared to Guillermo Del Toro’s 2006 epic, Pan’s Labyrinth.

Guillermo Del Toro is among the most influential and acclaimed filmmakers in the entire entertainment industry. Recipient of several accolades including three Academy Awards, Del Toro has blessed the industry with several incredible films and features. And so while many of his contemporaries and juniors would hail him as a visionary, the director himself hails Hayao Miyazaki as the best director in animation.

Recently having won the second Oscar for his apparently last film, The Boy and the Heron, Miyazaki is among the Time’s 100 Most Influential People of 2024 list. And Del Toro penned a heartfelt note while exclaiming why the director deserves to be on the list.

Spanish shows that come from the Latin American region tend to be overly dramatic. Romantic shows are often unbelievable and too cheesy, while crime thrillers will be filled with unnecessary twists and turns and too many convolutions in the end. Fortunately, The Hijacking of Flight 601 is subtle and emotional, and all the excesses mentioned above were reigned in. This six-episode miniseries chronicles the ordeal the crew and the passengers of Flight 601 faced when the flight was brought under the control of two hijackers. Based on a true story, there is a lot that unfolds as the series progresses.
Spoilers Ahead
Why Didn’t Edilma Board The Flight?
Set in 1973, the show begins by focusing on Edilma, a single mother of three boys. Her oldest son, William, helps her with his younger siblings as she is a full-time air hostess. She had a flight to catch early in the morning,...

As the nominees for the animated feature Oscar were unveiled this year, one thing was clear: 2D and 2D-influenced animated films are dominating awards season.
Among this year’s nominees, “The Boy and the Heron,” “Nimona,” “Robot Dreams” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” all used traditional 2D techniques or other methods to create a 2D look. Even the CG “Elemental” shows 2D influences across the many environments of Element City. And as the Academy nominates what might be helmer Hayao Miyazaki’s final film, it seems as though the impact of 2D is being recognized once again after CG having dominated the animation space for so long.
The 2D animation of today isn’t quite like cartoons of the past. With new techniques at their disposal, filmmakers are expanding the visuals they can create to tell rich, compelling stories. It’s very often a 2D look that’s intended for...

When :a[Aquaman]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/aquaman-review/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} first hit cinemas, it sparked people’s imaginations in all kinds of ways. There was the bioluminescent expanse of Atlantis; the epic battle sequences packed with sea creatures; the ancient monolithic kraken voiced by none other than Julie Andrews. But nothing captured the public’s hearts like the drumming octopus. He’s on screen for mere seconds out of a 150-odd minute runtime; but in those seconds, he stole the show. What other film gives you an octopus playing the bongos? None. Well, apart from Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom.

On Friday, October 6, cinephiles were given a precious gift when Showtime dropped one last film by the late, great William Friedkin: an adaptation of Herman Wouk’s play “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial.” The film is classic Friedkin, a clinic in blocking, editing, and camera movement reminiscent of earlier theatrical adaptations like “The Birthday Party,” “The Boys in the Band,” and “Bug.”
While there are many filmmaking lessons to be learned from studying the piece, one notable Friedkin disciple had the chance to examine the director’s process firsthand: Guillermo del Toro, who shadowed Friedkin throughout production as a backup in case the 87-year-old filmmaker was unable to complete the movie.
Long before he ever met Friedkin, del Toro was an admirer of his work. “He is an original,” del Toro told IndieWire. “He blends the lessons of documentary with complex and precise technology and narrative prowess. Every decision he...

Guillermo del Toro sent “Star Wars” fans into a tizzy in late September when he confirmed on social media that he was once planning a trip to a galaxy far, far, away as the director of a “Star Wars” movie. The Oscar winner provided no further details at the time, but he’s now confirmed to Collider’s Steven Weintraub that his axed “Star Wars” movie centered on Jabba the Hutt. Considering del Toro’s love of monsters, it’s hardly a surprise he’d pick Jabba as the focal point for his own “Star Wars” movie.
“We had the rise and fall of Jabba the Hutt, so I was super happy,” del Toro said. “We were doing a lot of stuff, and then it’s not my property, it’s not my money, and then it’s one of those 30 screenplays that goes away. Sometimes I’m bitter, sometimes I’m not.

Cool air in the evenings, pumpkins on doorsteps, and Spirit of Halloween stores everywhere you look. Yes, it is the most wonderful time of the year for a certain set of us who like our weather settings left at “autumnal” and our genre of choice to be on the spooky side of things.
With that in mind, one of the most pleasurable things to do each October is curl up with a good horror movie and feel the goosebumps gather on the back of your neck. But how do you know if something is a good horror movie, exactly? You watch it for yourself, or you trust the experts, of course! For instance, the most popular streaming service in the world, Netflix, offers a cornucopia of chillers, but which are the ones that might be worth your time? Our staff has put their heads together and come up with the below list.

Guillermo del Toro has been one of the most beloved filmmakers in all of fandom, and perhaps all of cinema, for the past 30 years. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, del Toro was fascinated with the fantastical at an early age, turning his childhood obsessions into a long creative career that has celebrated the monstrous, the grotesque, and the otherworldly. His is an aesthetic that gives the macabre with a sense of beauty and poetry.
From the start, del Toro’s passion for horror, science fiction, and fantasy in all their myriad forms—movies, TV, literature, comics, art—came through unapologetically, making him not just seem like he was one of us, a fan, but an uber fan; one of us who got to realize the visions and dreams that sparked inside his imagination. He even owns a house that is stuffed to the brim with all the tangible objects of his obsession,...

‘The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial’ Trailer: William Friedkin’s Swan Song Is a Military Courtroom Drama
William Friedkin’s final feature “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial” is debuting on Showtime.
Friedkin, who died in August 2023 at age 87, wrote and directed the adaptation of Herman Wouk’s 1953 play, itself adapted from his own Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The film version, which takes place entirely inside a courtroom, follows a U.S. naval first officer (Jake Lacy) standing trial for orchestrating a mutiny after his captain (Kiefer Sutherland). The captain showed signs of becoming unstable and, the first office alleges, jeopardized the lives of his crew. Jason Clarke portrays skeptical naval lawyer Barney Greenwald who agrees to defend Lacy’s character, Lt. Steve Maryk.
As the trial progresses, Greenwald becomes increasingly concerned and questions if the events aboard the Caine were deemed a true mutiny or simply the courageous acts of a group of sailors who did not trust their unstable leader.
Monica Raymund, Lewis Pullman, Jay Duplass, Tom Riley,...

Guillermo del Toro is determined to land a cinematic release for William Friedkin's final movie 'The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial'.The 58-year-old filmmaker served as an assistant director on the legal drama that is set for release on the streaming service Paramount+ next month but feels it should be shown in cinemas in honour of Friedkin – who died at the age of 87 last month.Del Toro tweeted: "I know it's not the 'model' for a streamer but this is Friedkin's final film. Can we get a theatrical run?"No matter if it's a limited one. Just respect for a master."The movie's producer Annabelle Dunne says it was a "joy" to have the 'Hellboy' director on set – particularly as Friedkin required a back-up director in order to get the project financed. She said: "It was a joy for all of us, including the actors, to have his presence there.

Surprise — Toro y Moi is back with a brand new EP called Sandhills, which arrives with an accompanying short film.
While the musical alias of Chaz Bear has often been more closely associated with genres like alt-pop, disco, psych, and yacht rock, Sandhills — named after a sleepy shopping mall in Bear’s hometown of Columbia, South Carolina — sees the musician explore a more folksy, Americana side of his art, fleshing out his songwriting with banjo, lap steel, and a lot of nostalgia. Sandhills is an ode to Bear’s Southern upbringing, but also acts as a benchmark of how far he’s come since passing out his first batch of self-recorded CDs.
Sandhills, the film, takes a pretty literal approach to this homecoming. It was produced by Bear’s high school photography teacher Katherine Perry, and directed by Steve Daniels, who once assisted Bear for a video with his high school band.

Guillermo del Toro has worked on a lot of projects (and I mean a lot) that have never been made. Because of this, he seems to have adopted a handy waste not, want not approach to directing. For example, when his "Haunted Mansion" film fell apart, he channeled those energies into his sumptuous haunted house flick, "Crimson Peak." Then, when his plans to remake "Beauty and the Beast" and "Creature from the Black Lagoon" fell through, he basically merged the two films to create his Oscar-winning girl-meets-fishboy romance, "The Shape of Water." In fact, I'd go so far as to argue that what del Toro actually directs is usually better than what he originally had in mind.
That bodes well for his next film, "Frankenstein." A new take on Mary Shelley's Gothic sci-fi/horror masterpiece has been one of del Toro's white whales for a very long time. At one point,...

Large scale puppets, miniatures and various other all-practical effects will come together for Grylu Sker, an Icelandic ghost story from the creators of The Haunted Swordsman – along with Sjón, co-writer of Robert Eggers’ The Northman – that is now funding on Kickstarter.
The film will even feature a stop motion animation sequence supervised by Oscar-winner Phil Tippett (Mad God), so it’s no surprise that the Kickstarter fund has been a smashing success so far. Running until August 11, over $90,000 of the total $120,000 goal has already been raised!
Billed as a gothic adventure, Grylu Sker is the tale of a lost explorer set in a world of Icelandic folklore written by Tab Murphy and Icelandic author Sjón (co-writer of The Northman). It is a story of an explorer’s fight for survival on a bleak unforgiving island and also a re-imagining of the legendary Icelandic witch Gryla.

After the trainwreck that was Cocaine Shark and with the spectre of Jurassic Shark 3: Seavenge looming over me, The Black Demon, or any other shark film for that matter, may not have been an obvious choice. But this one caught my attention when it was announced and the idea of a finned fear film with enough of a budget to give it some bite was hard to say no to.
Paul Sturges is the safety officer for Nixon Oil, a corporate name that does not exactly inspire confidence. He has been sent to Baja to inspect one of the company’s rigs and has brought his family along. He may have to work but his wife Ines, daughter, Audrey, and son Tommy can have a vacation.

Pinewood Group, which runs Pinewood Studios in the U.K., has acquired full ownership of Pinewood Toronto Studios.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the UK-based group has purchased a film and TV studio in Toronto that has its name on the marquee due to a sales and management deal with the facility’s former Canadian stakeholders that began in 2009.
The deal follows majority owner Bell Media putting up for sale its majority stake in the marquee studio where the Star Trek: Discovery series and Guillermo del Toro shoot. The deal for full ownership of Pinewood Toronto Studios landing with the UK group also comes after long negotiations with the city of Toronto and Paul Bronfman, chairman and CEO of studio operator Comweb Corp. to follow suit and sell their minority stakes in the facility.

Throughout the course of its stellar four-season run, HBO's "Barry" has featured a number of cameo appearances. Most of these took the form of fictional guest characters, from Vanessa Bayer as a vapid TV executive in season 3 to the third episode of the current season, which featured both filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro as a crime lord (not coincidentally named "Toro") and co-creator Bill Hader's old Saturday Night Live cast member Fred Armisen as a doomed assassin.
Less common within the show (but just as welcome) are the cameo appearances from Hollywood figures playing themselves, such as Jon Hamm's portrayal of himself in a fantasy sequence from season 1. The latest episode of "Barry" happened to include another filmmaker playing themselves: director Sian Heder, whose 2021 film "Coda" won several Academy Awards (including Best Picture).

In the world of "Barry," the titular assassin-turned-actor has made quite the laundry list of on-again, off-again enemies. From his longtime handler Monroe Fuches to the lovable Chechen mobster NoHo Hank, many have turned from being Barry's friend to wanting Barry dead. In Season 4's third episode, "you're charming," NoHo Hank and Cristobal react to Barry's cooperation with the authorities regarding the pair's growing "crime utopia" exactly as expected: they look to see him assassinated.
Assassinating someone in federal custody is no mean feat, however, so the pair consult with an absolute monster, a man called Toro, who arranges the hit with a pair of assassins who also happen to be podcasting gearheads.
If Toro looks surprisingly familiar to you, it's obviously because he's played by none other than Guillermo del Toro of Pappy McPoyle fame on "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" (in addition to being one of our era's...

Those surprised to see Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro in the latest episode of “Barry” may also be surprised to learn the cameo was del Toro’s idea – not that he thought it would actually happen. Creator and star Bill Hader says the “Pan’s Labyrinth” director has always been a fan of the HBO series, and told Hader at the end of Season 3 that he’d love to be in the show.
“It just so happened we had a part of this guy who sets up Hank and Cristobal with Los Amigos Gadgets, so I thought that’d be great for Guillermo and then we named the character Toro,” Hader told TheWrap during our breakdown of Season 4, Episode 3. “He seemed surprised that I actually did it. This article contains spoilers for Barry season 4 episode 3.
Since it first premiered on HBO in 2018, black comedy Barry has felt increasingly less like a comedy. Though he got his start in the comedic arts as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, show creator, star, and now full-time director Bill Hader has quite simply gotten too good at exploring the demonic depths of his title character to really let the punchlines fly.
The series’ bleak third season finale was one of the darkest half hours to ever compete in the “comedy” category at the Emmys and that shadow has hung over the early episodes of Barry‘s fourth and final season. With its third episode, however, Barry season 4’s comedy-drama balance finally starts to tilt back more towards comedy and it’s all thanks to two absolutely bonkers guest stars.

Being a rabid fan of SNL skits for years, this third episode of “Barry” season 4 made me unexpectedly happy. With back-to-back cameos in episode 3, the creators once again showed why “Barry” is regarded as one of the best shows on the air right now, as it keeps surprising and delighting us. Previously in “Barry,” we saw Barry in prison, where his mental health deteriorated to the point where we could only see the evil within him. Especially in episode 3, the complexity of his character became more evident and raised doubts about whether he was ever a good person. Let’s see what made us think this way.
Spoilers Ahead
Why Is Hank In A Dilemma? Who Is Toro?

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains light spoilers for “Barry” Season 4, Episode 3, “you’re charming.”]
When NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan) needs to hire a hitman to kill Barry Berkman (Bill Hader), he texts Toro.
When Bill Hader needs to hire an actor to play the yet-unseen handler, he texts Guillermo Del Toro.
Who else?
“Guillermo sent me a funny text [asking], ‘Could I be in ‘Barry’?” Hader said, explaining how the three-time Oscar winner came to be in Episode 3, “you’re charming,” of the HBO black comedy’s final season. Del Toro has long been a fan of the series — expressing his enthusiasm on Twitter from the very beginning — but Hader wasn’t sure how serious the “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Pinocchio” director was about joining the ensemble.
“I think he didn’t think I would [ask him],” Hader said. “People say [they want to be in the show] sometimes, and it never happens. But then I thought, ‘Actually, there’s a part that he’d be really good in.’ I called him and said, ‘Yeah,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Barry Season 4 Episode 3 “you’re charming.”] If you’re going to bring in a hitman to kill Barry (Bill Hader) in prison, but you want to make it somewhat comedic, do what the HBO series just did. In the latest episode of Barry, Noho Hank (Anthony Carrigan), now planning to take out rather than break out the titular character upon hearing about the deal he’s made with the FBI, turns to Toro (Guillermo del Toro) to hire professionals … sort of. The two men who will do the job? They have a podcast on which they rate and review gadgets. And, as we see when the time comes, one of them is someone Hader knows very well: his former SNL costar Fred Armisen. “Fred is just one of my favorite people in the world. And when I was writing that, I went, ‘oh ...

Among the more frequent objections I’ve heard about Barry since Season One is that the show has grown so dark that it no longer feels like a comedy most of the time. It’s an understandable concern. Heck, I expressed it myself during Season Two (though I feel the more recent years have been better balanced). Bill Hader is many things, especially a cinephile. When you watch "Barry," it's obvious that his influences lie in the films of the Coen Brothers, among others, but he's done videos for the Criterion Channel and spoken at length about the films and filmmakers he loves before. The third episode of the final season of "Barry," titled "you're charming," wastes little time at all — there's no cold open before the title card, and within a minute of the episode beginning, I think we can safely say we've learned a filmmaker Bill Hader must like an awful lot.
That, of course, would be Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro, who appears here as, simply, Toro. If you were paying attention during last week's two-part premiere, you know that NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan) contacted someone named Toro to see if Barry Berkman could be broken out of prison. “Anima: to give a soul to something that didn’t have it. In stop-motion this is more true than any other form of animation.” This, according to iconoclastic filmmaker Guillermos Del Toro, exactly one week before taking home Best Animated feature at the 95th Academy Awards for his visually arresting masterpiece Pinocchio.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” came out on top at the Visual Effects Society’s 2023 Ves Awards, held Wednesday evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
The James Cameron epic set a Ves record this year with 14 nominations in nine different categories, and it set a record for wins by coming out on top in every category in which it was nominated. Andalusia boasts legendary locations, used for decades in productions from “Lawrence of Arabia” to “Game of Thrones.” Now it’s the turn of the filmmakers from the region to get attention. This year’s Seville European Film Festival ran an Andalusian Panorama. Its aim was to showcase the latest and best of Andalusian cinema. A reccy:
Antonio Canales, Dancer (Raúl Rosillo, Spain )
A portrait of a legendary figure in flamenco culture. Rosillo’s film tracks Canales career through avant garde staging and interviews. Produced by José Carlos Conde, Antonio Carreto Cano, Victoria De Prado. A Seville world premiere.

Set in India, this doc short follows Tashi, a queer activist who, though now a buddhist monk, continues fighting for justice in their community. Tashi’s complete comfort in who they are is not fully shared by parents.

Exclusive: We are hearing from sources that Cattywumpus, the Gore Verbinski-directed animated movie about outer space felines, will be getting shopped around town to other studios.
Verbinski, whose films have grossed 3.76 billion and who won an Oscar in 2012 for the Paramount animated movie Rango, had been working on his latest film at Netflix.
Such is the complex nature of animated film production, where quite often halfway through, stories and plans can pivot. There’s a history of that from movies such as Pixar’s Soul and Dinosaur and DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
Cattywumpus repped Verbinski’s second animated movie after the Johnny Depp-voiced Western Rango, which grossed 246 million at the worldwide box office.
Netflix, we understand, gave the creative team the option to go shop the movie elsewhere.
Netflix has seen promotions and changeovers in its animation executive suite over the summer.

A24’s acclaimed stop-motion/live-action hybrid “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” could be the wild card in the animated feature Oscar race — going up against such early favorites as Pixar’s “Turning Red,” Disney’s “Strange World,” and Netflix’s two stop-motion behemoths: “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” and Henry Selick’s “Wendell & Wild” (the latter being the lone animated feature premiering at TIFF).
And why not? The feature debut from director Dean Fleischer Camp (adapting a series of shorts he created with “Marcel” star Jenny Slate), has been embraced by critics for its charm, wit, inventive stop-motion, and its adorable breakout star.
Toro y Moi, the musical project of songwriter and producer Chaz Bear, appeared on The Tonight Show to play his single “Millennium,” performing the vibe-y song alongside a live band.
The song comes off the musician’s seventh studio album, Mahal, which dropped in April. The 13-track LP showcases inspiration from 1960s and ’70s psychedelic rock to 1990s post-rock, and follows Toro y Moi’s 2019 album, Outer Peace. It features appearances from visual artist and musician Sofie Royer, Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Ruban Neilson, Neon Indian’s Alan Palomo and...

Pinewood Toronto Studios majority owner Bell Media is looking to possibly sell its stake in the marquee studio where the Star Trek: Discovery series and Guillermo del Toro shoot.
Executives at the Canadian media giant, a subsidiary of phone giant Bce Inc., were not available for comment. But The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed with possible bidders on the controlling interest, who wished to remain anonymous, that an informal sales process is underway.
A potential sale of the controlling stake in the Toronto studio comes as real estate developers and equity funds place increasing bets on Hollywood continuing to film movies and TV series in Canada. At Pinewood Toronto Studios, Netflix has a long term lease on four soundstages and adjacent offices for around 84,580 square feet of production space.

As the 56th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff) is about to kick off on Friday, there will be plenty to discuss at this year’s event in the picturesque Czech spa town. The prominent Central European festival, which is returning to its usual early July slot after last year’s edition was delayed to August because of the pandemic, will see 33 films from five continents screen across its three sections – the Crystal Globe Competition, the Special Screenings section and its new competition, Proxima, which replaces the former East of the West section.
This year’s selections will be bookended by Friday’s opening night film Superheroes, from Italian director Paolo Genovese, and George Miller’s Cannes title Three Thousand Years Of Longing, which will close the festival on July 9. The lineup includes the world premiere of Jake Paltrow’s Israel and Ukraine-shot feature June Zero, about...

Blending an engaging, if hectic, storyline with powerful visuals and winning perfs, Mexican Guillermo del Toro’s psychodrama “The Devil’s Backbone,” has the helmer toning down the perverse, comicbook imagination of his first two features — the Spanish-language “Chronos” (1993) and English-language “Mimic” (1997) — in favor of a muted, warmer and more psychological approach. Though it fails in its final reels to capitalize on its early promise, pic is still stylish, accomplished and tremendously enjoyable fare. Pre-sold heavily to many major territories, it did terrific first weekend B.O. at home after opening April 20 on the back of heavy marketing.
Pic will do nothing to harm del Toro’s reputation as perhaps Latin America’s foremost genre talent. However, auds expecting the conceptual hi-jinx of the earlier pics — particularly the multiple award-winning “Chronos” — are likely to be disappointed, and the movie’s psychology is too bargain basement to be of much interest in itself.
