As you might be able to tell from the year in the post title, I’ve gotten more than a little lackadaisical about keeping up with this annual series of the best in comics created by North Americans. (I reviewed 2006 at the beginning of 2007, 2007 later in 2007, 2008 in 2008, 2009 in 2009, 2010 in 2011 after the next book was published, 2011 in 2012, 2012 in 2013, 2014 in 2014, and have so far missed 2015, 2016, and 2017. If it were still my job to keep up with things being published, I would probably be deeply ashamed of myself — but it hasn’t been for a decade now, so I’m not.)
But I’m still interested in good comics, as always. So here I finally am with the Jeff Smith-edited The Best American Comics 2013 , only four and a half years after it was published and six-and-a-half to seven-and-a-half years after the work in it originally appeared.

Pull up a chair and join us for a rundown of all the biggest comics stories from the past seven days, from the surprising inspiration for a new Asterix character to a new Superman just like the old Superman.
Julian Assange inspires an Asterix character
Writer Jean-Yves Ferri and artist Didier Conrad have turned to a surprising inspiration for a new character in the 36th book in the classic French comic series, Asterix and the Missing Scroll.
The journalist called Confoundtheirpolitix - a character caught up in the battle against Julius Caesar's propaganda machine - was inspired by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
According to Agence France-Presse, he came close to being named Wikilix, which would have been no more on the nose than your average Asterix character (we're looking at you, old man Geriatrix).

Dark Horse, the elder statesman of independent comics, continues to show no signs of slowing down during this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Even though Marvel now holds the rights to Star Wars, its biggest licensed comics property, Dark Horse struck back by announcing a several creator owned titles in different genres as well as an expansion to the Mignolaverse and a sequel to one of the most beloved novels of the past century. Dark Horse also won some Eisners in a wide variety of categories showing the company’s comics appeal to many types of readers from kids to people who wouldn’t normally read comics.

There's a moment midway through the first issue of "The Last of Us: American Dreams" where Ellie, who seems a while away from meeting Joel, makes a grisly discovery in the frame of a truck she's been assigned to clean. That moment illustrates so many things about the character and her world: the ease of violence beyond the secure walls of the military-fortified compounds and more importantly, how quickly the young are forced to get used to it.
Based on the work in this Neil Druckman/Faith Erin Hicks-penned miniseries, not only will we be getting some background teen survivor Ellie, but also a broad look at the plague-afflicted United States in the upcoming Naughty Dog game. As far as first issues go, it works, giving us a first glimpse at a prickly, motivated young heroine and the precarious state of survival in this dying version of America.

Are you tired of how female superheroes dress and behave in mainstream superhero comics? Well, writer Will Brooker and artist Susan Shore have created a comic for you called My So-Called Secret Identity which features as the main character a woman who doesn’t dress in revealing outfits nor act the damsel in distress. Her name is Catherine Abigail Daniels, a PhD candidate living in Gloria City, a thriving metropolis plagued by terrorists and superheroes in equal measure. And if you’re not a hero or villain, you’re “little people”.
If you read this comic without reading any of the publicity, you wouldn’t think this was a superhero comic. There’s an explosion early on in the story where a bomb goes off in a subway but that’s not indicative of superhero comics. Instead, we get the internal monologue of Cat on page 1 mentioning “special powers” apropos...

I love superhero comics, probably a little more than a man of my age should, and I also love traditional old school comic strips like Peanuts, Dilbert and the like, which is perfectly acceptable for anybody, man or woman, of any age, so the coming together of the two in Superhero Girl by Faith Erin Hicks is like finding the proverbial four leaf clover.
I must admit the only Superhero Girl that I was aware of until this collection popped up for review was the song of the same name by Floridian pop punks Eve6, but a quick read of the synopsis (“What if you can leap tall buildings and defeat alien monsters with your bare hands, but you buy your capes at secondhand stores, and have a weakness for kittens, and a snarky comment from Skeptical Guy can ruin a whole afternoon?”) had me at “Hello” and within a few pages I was hooked.

Dark Horse Comics and the team behind Uncharted announced the 2013 comic series The Last of Us: American Dreams and an art book based on the upcoming survival horror game during New York Comic Con.
The series follows The Last of Us heroine Ellie in the ruins of the postpandemic world, serving as a prequel to the game. Here's how the publisher is describing the story:
Ellie, the heroine of The Last of Us, has grown up in a postpandemic world, shuttled between military orphanages in one of the last remaining quarantine zones and resigned to the fact that when she’s old enough, she’ll be channeled into the army or left to fend for herself—until she meets an older girl determined to find a third way out. American Dreams explores Ellie’s backstory and her first steps on the road that led her to her companion Joel.

Friends with Boys, the new graphic novel by Faith Erin Hicks (whose The War at Ellsmere I reviewed in a huge round-up month), has an oddly ill-fitting title; it’s the story of a teenager, Maggie, who is starting in a public highschool after her mother (who home-schooled her and her three older brothers — all of whom oddly seem to still be in the same school though there seems to be a few years in between her and her twin brothers and then the oldest one) ran away mysteriously. Maggie has trouble making friends with anyone, since she’s been so wrapped up in her family, but she’s a tomboy, and has been closer to boys (her brothers) her entire life. So being “Friends With Boys” isn’t really the big thing here — it’s that she’s in the company of people who aren’t family, or without her mother,...

“You were homeschooled? But you seem so … normal!”
Ah, the shocked outcry of an acquaintance to whom I have revealed my secret past as a feral homeschooled child. But yes, it’s true. I was a feral homeschooled child, grown up without a television, educated outside the public school system, childhood years spent running wild through the suburbs of southern Ontario. I did not watch “Transformers” as a kid. I cannot join you in your nostalgic remembrances of that (allegedly) awesome cartoon.

With the Fourth of July still three days away, Canadians in the feed got a head start on expressing their patriotism this morning. The Twitter Report wishes them all a happy Canada Day and hopes they celebrate safely.
In other lively summer events, some DC Comics readers are planning to protest the company's book reboots in a few weeks at Comic-Con International in San Diego. Jimmy Palmiotti had a suggestion for them, while Pj Holden proposed an alternative strategy for DC. Check out what they said and see an awesome in-progress Superman sketch by Mike Oeming after the jump.

Comic book creator gender ratios are always a hot topic in the Twittersphere when they get discussed, and Gail Simone broached the subject last night with her followers. B. Clay Moore, Jeff Parker and Lea Hernandez contributed to the debate, which you can dive into in more detail through their respective accounts.
There was another debate going on as well, however, as the Republican presidential front-runners for 2012 talked about non-comics stuff on TV. Ron Marz on his Michele Bachmann dreams, Chris Weston on "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" and Stephen Colbert on his Disney aspirations ranked atop our list of favorite posts for the morning.

@westonfront Tonight is opening night for the revamped Spider-Man: Turn Off the Audience. "The 1st time I loved (the show) was 2½ weeks ago" admits Bono.

The new "Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn" teaser still keeps its hero in the shadows, but it's given the world a glimpse at what director Steven Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson have put together. A few tweeters feel like it may have jumped a little too far into the uncanny valley, though.
Meanwhile, Jon Stewart and Bill O'Reilly's debate last night attracted a few responses as well. Reactions to that, news of an up-and-coming Marvel trivia champion and Simon Pegg's new fight to raise awareness are each on the record after the jump.

@Brianmbendis my daughter is schooling @axelalonsomarv and @TomBrevoort in marvel trivia. painful to watch!!
-Brian Michael Bendis, Writer ("New Avengers," "Ultimate Spider-Man")
@maguirekevin Wow! Jon Stewart pelted Bill O'Reilly with facts that would have made any sane man say "I was wrong" and O'Reilly remained impervious!

The general public got a look at some new "Cowboys and Aliens" trailer action last week, but if you're a producer like Ron Howard, Jon Favreau's got a lot more to show you. I'm sure the same goes for the producers behind "Green Lantern" right now, but the tweets in the feed this morning only included trailer critiques on that front.
Check out what Bill Willingham was looking for in there, as well what Bryan Hitch refused to do on his birthday and who finished "Dragon Age 2" below. Those thoughts and Mark Millar's opinion on Arnold Schwarzenegger wanting to be President made the rundown in today's highlights.

-Jon Favreau, Director ("Cowboys and Aliens," "Iron Man 2")
@mrmarkmillar Arnie has declared he wants to be President of EU.

It's always refreshing to wake up on April Fools' Day and see that there are other people out there who dread having to figure out which breaking news stories are real and which are fakes. If the rumor about David Tennant and Georgia Moffet's new child is true, though, we wish them all the best.
Also, Google's prank of the day almost makes the Internet bearable, and if you're a font lover who hasn't done a search for Helvetica yet, you should get on that posthaste. Click on down to see who's been trying to circulate their own April Fools' joke in the Twittersphere, what Chris Weston said about the new "Justice League" movie casting news and how seeing "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" on TV makes Bryan Lee O'Malley feel.

Now that the "Chew" TV series is headed to Showtime, we can all look forward to seeing which elements of John Layman and Rob Guillory's Image Comics series make it over to the adaptation. For the time being, though, we do have a fine tweet from Guillory forecasting what the Showtime take could look like.
In other topics, I hope you left yesterday's report craving more "Sucker Punch" reviews, because a few more showed up in the feed this morning. Adam Hughes has now dethroned Fred Van Lente with my favorite horrible description of the film yet, but I'm still just as stoked to finally see it as Jim Lee seems to be. Read the review carnage after the jump and find out which comic Gallagher won't be appearing on anytime soon.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson invaded the Twittersphere as a trending topic Monday night when he returned to professional wrestling and announced that he will be hosting Wrestlemania Xxvii in April. Jeff Katz, Jill Thompson and Becky Cloonan all seemed excited about that, even as Jhonen Vasquez sounded a little aggravated about his Valentine's Day expenses.
The other big TV star of the night was a computer named Watson who competed against some simple human beings on "Jeopardy!" A call for the computer's destruction along with some evil plans for Moon Knight and a poetically minimalist summary of "Watchmen" can be see after the jump.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is your Twitter Report for February 15, 2011.
@JhonenV Valentines Day gets freaking expensive what with the cash spent on rope, a new clubbin' bat, chloroform And rag, and a new cage.

Zack Snyder has made a lot of friends in the comic book industry through his adaptations of "300" and "Watchmen," but his new film "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" may be a tough sell for at least two creators. In all fairness, though, such reactions may be widespread among illustrators who have tried to draw owl characters with any type of expression before.
Other trending topics in the news included Joaquin Phoenix's Letterman appearance and Blockbuster's Chapter 11 filing, which Faith Erin Hicks hopes will at least flood the used movie market with deals. Check out tweets on those subjects after jump along with Christos Gage's problem with "Mad Men" and Cully Hamner's response to a theory about DC's WildStorm closure announcement.
