Flix FlashbackIn #WatchWithTNM, we revisit a film that captures the soft corner that many fathers have for their daughters, even if they might be tyrants otherwise. Sowmya RajendranAbhiyum Naanum was released in 2008, and I watched the film in a theatre with my father. He was reduced to a puddle of tears by the end of it, though I was laughing for most part of the film. I found Raghuram's (Prakash Raj) helicopter parenting to be similar to my father's extreme paranoia about my welfare. Abhi's (Trisha) irritation with her father's constant worrying was something I could completely relate to -- like her, I too desired independence, I wanted to be recognised as a person who was capable of taking care of herself. Back then, I did not know what it is to be a parent. I did not know what it meant to bring a life into this world, the...

KollywoodThe actor who made her debut as a teenager still manages to wow audiences over 15 years later.Tnm StaffThe newly released teaser for the Vijay Sethupathi-Trisha starrer 96 has struck a chord with viewers. Directed by C Prem Kumar who did the cinematography for the hugely entertaining Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanam, 96 is supposedly a romance story and has already set up expectations, thanks to the evident chemistry between the lead pair. For Trisha, who first appeared in an uncredited role in Jodi, it has been a long journey. At 35, the actor is among the few heroines who've stayed relevant in the extremely sexist and ageist space that is the film industry. Not only has Trisha refused to be relegated to the 'sister' and 'anni' roles reserved for women her age, she continues to bag substantial projects. In fact, she walked out of the Vikram starrer Saamy 2 because she was not happy about her role, even though it's a big male star's film. On social media, Trisha is often subjected to disparaging comments about her age, with trolls calling her 'kezhavi' and 'paati'. This, even as the leading male actors in the industry continue to act with women who are decades younger than them. The comments especially seem absurd, considering Trisha's appearance has barely changed from the time she made her debut as a teenager. Here's a look at Trisha over the years, right down to her look in 96. Mounam Pesiyadhe (2002) Trisha's first release as heroine was with Suriya in this romantic drama directed by Ameer Sultan. Saamy (2003) Trisha acted with Vikram in this cop film directed by Hari. Trisha's look in the film, as a young woman from a conservative family, was a hit with the audience. Lesa Lesa (2003) This Priyadarshan film was the first that Trisha signed as heroine, but the project was delayed. Trisha acted with Shaam and Madhavan in this love story about loss, acceptance, and moving on. Ghilli (2004) This action film from Dharani saw Trisha acting with Vijay. Prakash Raj, who plays the villain, is obsessed with Trisha's character. The song 'Appadi podu' from the film still has great recall value. Trisha went on to star in several such mass hero films, mostly registering her presence with her dance skills. Aayutha Ezhuthu (2004) As the city girl Meera who is resigned to marry the man chosen by her parents but has a last minute change of heart, Trisha stood out in this ensemble film directed by Mani Ratnam. Abhiyum Naanum (2008) Directed by Radha Mohan, this film about a father and daughter relationship has Trisha playing a role that requires her to go from school girl to young woman. With her slight frame and youthful looks, Trisha was convincing in a school uniform just as she was as a poised young woman. Vinnaithandi Varuvaya (2010) Perhaps the favourite film for Trisha fans, this Gautham Menon romance saw Trisha acting with Simbu, her close friend in real life. Trisha plays Jessie, a Syrian Christian woman from a conservative family who is conflicted about whether she should marry her boyfriend or give in to her family's wishes. Manmadhan Ambu (2010) Trisha played an independent actor in this film, in which she acted with Kamal Haasan. She breaks up with her fiance (Madhavan) who wants her to quit cinema and charts out her own journey. Yennai Arindhal (2015) In this cop film directed by Gautham Menon and starring Ajith, Trisha plays Hemanika, a single mom and Bharatanatyam dancer. Thoongavanam (2015) Once again opposite Kamal Haasan, Trisha played an officer in the Narcotics Control Bureau. The film didn't have a romance track as such and Trisha was seen focused on her doing her job - pretty rare in mainstream Tamil films. Kodi (2016) Directed by Durai Senthilkumar, Trisha played the villain for the first time in her career. As Rudra, an aspiring politician, Trisha overturned many stereotypes about female villains in Tamil cinema. She even murders the hero, played by Dhanush. Hey Jude (2018) In her debut Malayalam film opposite Nivin Pauly, Trisha played Crystal, a young woman who is bipolar. Her natural and intense performance in the film impressed fans and critics alike. The film was directed by Shyamaprasad. 96 (2018) We will just leave you with this image of Trisha's luminescent beauty.

KollywoodThe poster for 'Maratha Samugam' says the film will be based on the 'love which was not accepted in Udumalaipet'. Tnm Staff sankar-and-kausalya.jpgThree days ago, a Tiruppur court convicted six out of the 11 accused in the gruesome murder of Sankar, a Dalit man, who had married Kausalya, a woman belonging to the dominant Thevar community. On the heels of the verdict comes the announcement that a film about the crime titled Maratha Samugam or 'Society that hasn't changed' will be made. The poster of the film which has been released says, 'The love which was not accepted in Udumalaipet, as a story'. Sankar had been murdered in Udumalaipet on March 13, 2016. Kausalya was also grievously injured but survived the attack. From being a depressed and suicidal woman, she went on to become a strong voice against caste. It was her will to fight the legal battle that has led to the conviction of the accused. Director Pankaj S Balaji is said to be making the film. There have been Tamil films in the past about 'honour' killings, notably Balaji Sakthivel's Kaadhal. Radha Mohan's Gouravam is another such film. Trisha's upcoming Garjanai, which is the Tamil remake of Nh 10, will also be on the same theme. The Sankar-Kausalya case has already made its way to popular culture. In Jyothika's Magalir Mattum, her character performs inter-caste marriages and one of the couples who get married are called Sankar and Kausalya. Tamil films on real life cases have been made earlier. Like this highly publicised case, Kollywood has also been interested in making a film based on the Swathi murder case which shook the state. However, the family had raised objections to the film. Kausalya has said that she will fight further until everyone, including her mother, is convicted in the case. She has also said that she will not rest until a law that specially deals with 'honour' killings comes into existence. While Kausalya's efforts have won her praise and support from several, many casteist people have also resorted to abusing her for her actions. #MarathaSamugam Movie Poster On https://t.co/8CCSZ98yLH pic.twitter.com/KAxCsrPGGR — Nikkil (@onlynikil) December 13, 2017 Enanble Notification: NoTNM Marquee: No...

"If this model proves successful, then sooner or later producers are going to follow. We don't know how this will turn out to be, but we are hoping for a positive result," he added.

Without an iota of doubt, what "Gouravam" sets out to achieve as a subject is laudable, but it fails to engage as a film. Known for churning pure family entertainers and path-breaking films, Radha Mohan succeeds in creating mass awareness about a burning issue, but in the effort, he makes his film seem more or less as a documentary. The film may have left an impact, but it sure doesn't manage to entertain.
