SeriesFest Season 9 Independent Pilot Competition Winners Include ‘Humanized’, ‘Chanshi’ (Exclusive)
SeriesFest Season 9 unveiled its list of winners in the independent pilot competition at a ceremony in Denver on Wed, May 10. Jurors screened 55 pilots from creative voices around the globe at this year’s iteration of the television festival.
“The independent pilot competitions are at the heart of our mission. It is why we founded SeriesFest,” said Randi Kleiner, CEO and Co-Founder of SeriesFest. “It was to be a discovery platform for independent artists and give them the opportunity to get their voices heard, their projects seen by an audience and executives, and make new connections. Anyone who has made a pilot deserves to be honored.”
At the awards ceremony, SeriesFest also announced the winners for two initiatives including the Level Forward Impact Award (which went to Sarah Klein and Tom Mason) and Caz Matthews Fund. The Level Forward Impact Award, given to the episodic pilot and team who demonstrate, on...

“Encanto” star John Leguizamo has signed on to executive produce short film “Triggered” from Tara Westwood.
“Triggered,” which stars Westwood, Isiah Whitlock Jr. (“Da 5 Bloods”), Caitlin Mehner (“Dopesick”) and Robert John Burke (“Law & Order Special Victim’s Unit”), deals with themes of gun violence.
“’Triggered’ is exceptional in that it doesn’t preach and never hits you over the head with a message – but I don’t know how anyone can watch it and not agree that we need to do things differently,” said Leguizamo. “Most Americans, even NRA members, already support basic changes such as improved background checks and this is a conversation that we must have. I’m so excited to be a part of this powerful piece directed and starring Tara Westwood.”
The short tells the story of Ohio (played by Whitlock Jr.) and Virginia (Mehner), who have both lost family to gun violence and who believe a senator,...

Filmmaker Elias Plagianos and his team had won the second-annual Science and Tech Script Competition at the North Fork TV Festival for “Superuser Do,” a movie anthology following technologists throughout their personal and professional trials. Along the way, it looked at the influence of technology giants on our lives.
The anthology debuts this weekend at the North Folk Festival and after winning the prize, Plagianos decided the script needed a rewrite. It was wrong, in his eyes to tell a story about students without looking at the pandemic and how that has altered our world, in this case, learning via Zoom. Before production, he scrambled to re-write the script.
Serving as editor, writer and director, Plagianos wanted to tell an authentic story. He talked to Variety about reframing the narrative and adapting to the safety guidelines as an independent filmmaker.

With submissions ranging from countries like Italy and Nepal to as short as several minutes to feature length films, every aspect of storytelling has been covered within the 2015 Soho International Film Festival . It only seems fitting that the festival wraps up its sixth annual festival with a number of prominent presenters including The Avengers’ Robert Clohessy and Rescue Me’s James McCaffrey. With awards given to the best of the best at the festival, it was a great close to another successful year for the festival.
There was an even greater presence among the jurors of the festival, with people have worked as actors on shows like Dexter to writers and directors having worked on films like On Golden Years. The jurors included Emmy Award nominee journalist and educator Ernabel Demillo, or ABC Network Casting Head Marci Phillips. David Zayas, an actor on Gotham and Donna McKenna, a casting director and producer,...

The main characters of the new film The Crimson Mask represent a phenomenon not uncommon in modern society. For years, both Parker and Thomas Caine lived far beyond their means, accumulating debts that now seem insurmountable. Caine is a seemingly well-to-do businessman who finds his options drying up as the debt collectors are closing in; meanwhile, Parker is a washed-up fighter in the Terry Malloy mold—a coulda-been contender who never saved for a rainy day.
Each man is desperate for the means to break from the past and start life over, sans his crushing financial burden. Enter the Crimson Mask, an ancient ritual that could provide Caine and Parker with the salvation they’re looking for, provided either can survive a rite-of-passage involving guns, swordplay, and characters whose intentions may not always be what they appear. Part-fantasy, part-noir, The Crimson Mask has performed remarkably well on the festival circuit to-date,...
