MaryAnn’s quick take… An essential history lesson with a smart smack of relevance for today (because feminism always has to be relitigated). It’s also warm, funny, and hugely entertaining. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): not a sports fan at all
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
That saying about those not remembering the past being condemned to repeat it? Of course it’s true… but sometimes it’s not an accident that the past gets forgotten. Sometimes the squashing of history — and the continuation of history into the present — is deliberate. Feminists know this: Women are constantly having to reinvent feminism, refight the same battles, because they don’t stay won. A brief moment of small triumph very quickly gets drowned out by major cultural pushback; women may savor victory only long enough...

Deborah Watling, the actress behind Second Doctor companion Victoria Wakefield, has passed away...
Some sad news: actress Deborah Watling, fondly remembered for playing Doctor Who companion Victoria Wakefield, has died at the age of 69.
See related Vikings renewed for season 5
Deborah acted opposite Second Doctor Patrick Troughton in 1967 and 1968, appearing in multiple classic Doctor Who serials including The Tomb Of The Cybermen, The Ice Warriors and many more.
A great deal of her work on the sci-fi drama didn't survive due to the BBC's erasure policy in the 1960s. However, in October 2013, previously missing serials The Web Of Fear and The Enemy Of The World were released by the BBC after being discovered in Jos, Nigeria by Philip Morris.

Before they starred in blockbusters and hit shows, these actors were honing their skills via some pretty hilarious (in retrospect) ad campaigns.
Take a look back at who tried to sell us everything from soda to tampons in their pre-a-list days.
Courteney Cox
Dressed as a dancer, Cox and her unforgettable haircut “told it to us straight” about Tampax in the ’80s.
Mila Kunis
Long before repping Jim Beam, a bubbly Kunis appeared in commercials for Telephone Tammy, Glitter Hair Barbie and Lisa Frank.
Ben Affleck
Affleck played an optimistic would-be suitor equipped with a car phone in a 1989 Burger King ad.

Ip Man 2, from Cine Asia, is a semi-biographical martial arts film loosely based on the life of Wing Chun grandmaster, Ip Man. The film was directed by Wilson Yip and Sammo Hung, produced by Raymond Wong, written by Edmond Wong, and stars martial arts legend, Donnie Yen, who reprises the leading role.
This sequel continues on from events in the first Ip Man film, and covers Ip Man’s life in Hong Kong, which was at the time under British colonial rule, and recovering from the Japanese invasion of China. Ip Man’s main hurdles are his reduced circumstances, British oppression, and rivalry from other martial arts practitioners, including the local Hung Ga master Hung Chun-nam, as played by Sammo Hung.

There are the lawyers that do good – Jack McCoy, Marshall Eriksen, Sandy Cohen.
Then there are the lawyers that look good – Jessica Pearson, Olivia Pope, Harvey Specter.
Finally there are the lawyers that make you question the entire legal profession – wait, actually that's most of them. We don't have the time or space to make that list right now.
Love them or hate them, lawyers serve a vital purpose in our litigious society.
They fight for the wrongly accused; prosecute dangerous criminals; educate and shape young minds; and all in all try to make this world a better place.
There are bound to be lawyers I forgot, so don't hesitate to add your favorites in the comments.
And remember to watch The Good Fight on CBS All Access, Sunday, February 19, 2017 at 8:00 Pm Et.

Putting aside all of the chunter about VPNs and rising subscription costs for a moment, there are more hidden gems to be discovered on Netflix UK than you might expect, and we've been combing through the streaming site's current catalogue to find some of the most underappreciated comedies on offer.
We've come up with this fairly broad selection of films that varies on several fronts. We've picked out a mix of belly laughers and dark comedies, with a couple of dramedies thrown in for good measure. They're not all big Hollywood comedies, but neither are they all films that you're hearing about for the first time, though we've tried to order them according to how well known they may or may not be. I'm not sure Tina Fey was meant to be a movie star. She is, no question about it, a dazzling wit, and I think she can be very funny onstage as well. So far, though, Hollywood has not figured out what to do with Fey as a leading actress because she simply doesn't fit the cookie-cutter archetypes that so many actresses are forced to play, and it's left her in a weird place as an actress. She's obviously talented, but who's writing the roles that she could play? As it turns out, all it takes are directors like Glenn Ficarra and John Requa and a writer like Robert Carlock, who worked with Fey on 30 Rock and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. I like Ficarra and Requa. I don't think every film they've made is great, but they have a good eye for both character and detail. My favorite film of theirs is still I Love You,...

A class action lawsuit against tobacco giant Phillip Morris wrapped up last week with a ten person jury determining that the company should not have to offer Ct scans to smokers. The plaintiffs, a class of Massachusetts smokers, argued that Philip Morris knew cigarettes were dangerous and defective, could have easily made them safer and therefore should cover the costs of tests to assess whether the smokers had developed lung cancer.

As we learned from one of Community’s best ever episodes, Ken Burns’ heralded documentary films are also ripe targets for parody. Now, Machinima is taking aim at Burns’ signature filmmaking style with a series called Real Fake History, a mockumentary that pretends pop culture stories are historical events.
Each episode of Real Fake History dives into a different pop culture franchise. Across ten installments, the series will visit everything from Starship Troopers to Game of Thrones to Mike Tyson’s Punch Out. The first episode, however, treads upon the familiar nerd territory of Star Wars by examining the Battle of Endor. Narrator Phil Morris (Seinfeld’s Jackie Chiles) leads the way, The Guild co-star Jeff Lewis provides the most comedic punch, and, as you might expect, the camera slowly pans across every single image it encounters. It’s pretty fun stuff, though the commenters seem more interesting in explaining how,...

It's a con man movie, so you know up front that there are going to be cons played on the characters and the audience alike, and sure enough, "Focus" plays out like you'd expect a con man movie to play out. It is slick and it is well-made, and there is little or nothing about it that I'd call surprising. If you know what kind of genre you're getting into and you're going to see the good-looking movie stars do exactly what you expect them to do, "Focus" will go down easy this weekend. Will Smith is in his comfort zone here as Nick, a big league con man who runs a sizable crew. When he spots Jess (Margot Robbie) one night at a bar, he knows she's got larceny in her blood right away. She's green, though, and she sees Nick as a possible mentor, someone who can teach...

Opening Batman: The Complete Series, I said, “This is my childhood in a box.” When the ABC series debuted in January 1966, I was seven, the exact perfect age to be utterly captivated by seeing a comic book faithfully adapted to the small screen. Without fail, I was glued to the television set on Wednesday and Thursday evenings right until the final episode aired in March 1968, leaving indelible images in my mind. These were reinforced just a few years later when local syndicated reruns burned the stories, sounds, and characters deeper into my psyche.
I was too young to understand the context of the show and its impact on popular culture, DC Comics, or the world of licensing. I didn’t get the wry jokes, it’s knowing pop camp approach to storytelling, or how it cleverly worked on multiple levels (a rare occurrence on prime time back then). Instead,...

Love, for being such a harmonious emotion, has received numerous lashings from pop culture over time. It’s been likened to a battlefield, dubbed crazy and stupid – hell, it’s even been called a “motherf&cker” by Old School - but I believe writer/director Ira Sachs hit the nail on the head by simply stating “Love Is Strange.” How does one capture such a wild, untamed emotion in one movie, guiding us from a lustful spark’s initial lighting all the way to its bittersweet flickering out? Easy, he doesn’t. John Lithgow and Alfred Molina may fearlessly play two long-time lovers in what appears to be a typical genre setup, but Sachs merely uses the homosexual couple as a wonderful portrayal of love’s rawest state – avoiding preachy civil rights issues and obvious statements about equality. Instead, Sachs suggests we live, laugh, love, and touch as many hearts...

This July 5th marks the 25th anniversary of the "Seinfeld" series premiere. The sitcom is considered one of the best shows of all time and its contribution to comedy, pop culture, and the TV landscape as a whole since its inaugural episode is pretty much unparalleled over the past few decades.
We all remember phrases like "yada, yada, yada," might recall Jerry was a Superman fan, and know that the show was filmed in La and not New York City, where it took place. But there are some little-known tidbits even the biggest fans of the series might not be aware of.
Here are 25 facts you should know about "Seinfeld":
1. "Seinfeld" wasn't part of NBC's 1989 fall lineup. The show got a summer premiere date -- July 5, 1989.
2. It was originally titled "The Seinfeld Chronicles," but got "the old switcheroo" because ABC was already planning a series called "The Marshall Chronicles.

It was reported earlier this week that casting was underway for the final leading role in Terminator: Genesis . At the time, John Boyega was said to be the leading choice to play the son of Miles Dyson, the Cyberdyne engineer largely responsible for the birth of Skynet, although it was noted that the Attack the Block star was also up for a role in J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII and could not appear in both projects. Today, Variety reveals that The Hunger Games and The Spectacular Now star Dayo Okeniyi has taken the part. Joe Morton played the elder Dyson in Terminator 2: Judgment Day , with the character later appearing, played by Phil Morris, on the television series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles." It’s going to be a little over a month until the next episode of Smallville, and after they left us with such a great episode cliffhanger, I thought it only prudent to curb my addiction by looking back at the last nine seasons and sort through, and try to find out just what were the best episodes of this re-telling of Superman’s origin. It is a bit of a daunting task, because not every episode is gold, but when this show is on form, it’s fantastic.

Actor and comedy legend Leslie Nielsen sadly passed away recently, and as if by magic the films that remained on the shelf for so long suddenly burst into the fore as everyone trys to score a quick cash-in.
The first of which, in Nielsen’s case, is Stonerville… Yeah, don’t hold out much hope folks – this is a film about a YouTube celebrity, and also stars Pauly Shore. Hmmmm. According to reports, Screen Media Films have acquired the ”comedy” and will release it on DVD next month.
The film, which stars Pauly Shore, Patrick Cavanaugh and Phil Morris tells the story of a comedian and self-proclaimed “King of YouTube” named Slam Slamsky who loses his job and girlfriend only to find new inspiration in a fan of his viral videos. Check out the trailer:
Stonerville is released straight to DVD in the Us on January 11th 2011.

A few weeks back, EW interviewed Bryan Waterman, a young filmmaker who was struggling to complete an animated film that featured the vocal talents of the late Leslie Nielsen. Nielsen also had some other projects in the can when he passed away on Nov. 28, but after seeing the trailer for Stonerville, I sincerely hope Mr. Waterman comes up with the funding for his film. I know Nielsen had a sense of humor about such things, but I’d hate for Nielsen’s last bow to be as a dazed film producer who’s getting serviced under his desk.

Straight-to-dvd comedies starring Pauly Shore, Patrick Cavanaugh and Phil Morris usually don't rise to the level of mention. But when one of the stars is late comic actor Leslie Nielsen, appearing in his last role, the release does have some anticipation attached to it. Screen Media, which is distributing the film on disc, has announced a Jan. 11 DVD release date for the film. It's available for pre-order on Amazon for $22.49. Canadian-born Nielsen, star of "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun" movies, died on Nov. 28 in Florida at the age of 84.
