It’s been 100 years since ink first flowed through Montblanc’s Meisterstück, the fountain pen wielded by the likes of Nelson Mandela, Yoko Ono, Presidents Barack Obama and John F. Kennedy, and others.
To mark the luxe instrument‘s centennial, the German luxury house took over Los Angeles’ Paramour Estate (once the home of silent movie star Antonio Moreno) for a starry soirée to launch a new global campaign conceived by Wes Anderson — complete with a red carpet inspired by the short film’s alpine setting.
Though the Oscar-winning filmmaker was absent (he was busy filming in Berlin), campaign co-stars Jason Schwartzman and Rupert Friend were on hand for a seated dinner alongside guests Adrien Brody, Maude Apatow, Emma Roberts (who requested a custom sketch from on-site artist Kevin Zych), Simu Liu (who was seen sneaking a peek inside the hilltop manse’s speakeasy), Kiernan Shipka, Waris Ahluwalia, Dylan Sprouse,...

While Wes Anderson continues production in Germany on his new film The Phoenician Scheme, starring Benicio Del Toro, Michael Cera, Bill Murray, Riz Ahmed, and Mia Threapleton (Kate Winslet’s daughter), we have another treat from the filmmaker today. After teaming with cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel on his latest feature, he’s now collaborated with Linus Sandgren for a new short film / ad for a company that certainly fits his brand.
To mark a century since the pen Meisterstück was first introduced in 1924, Montblanc has partnered with Anderson to create a campaign that journeys into the Maison’s extraordinary world as seen through the filmmaker’s eyes. Directed by and starring Anderson, who co-directed with Roman Coppola and co-stars with Rupert Friend and Jason Schwartzman, the humorous three-minute feature was shot over two days in Berlin.

“Russian Doll” — the multi-Emmy-winning series hailing from creators Amy Poehler, Leslye Headland and star Natasha Lyonne — is finally back for Season 2 after a more than three-year pandemic-induced hiatus. The mind-melting show, often compared to “Groundhog Day” in its exploration of a cynical New York City woman’s escapades in an inexplicable time loop, is heady enough without a monthslong break cutting through its storyline. Below, we’re recapping all of the most important highlights from “Russian Doll” Season 1 to get you up to speed before you binge-watch Season 2 on Netflix.
“Staring down the barrel of my own mortality” Netflix
Episode 1 opens with Nadia (Lyonne) staring intently at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. Unbeknownst to her, this will be her beginning point nearly every day for the duration of the season. In an election year marked by unprecedented grassroots energy on the left, and with just one month to go until the midterms (Nov 6th), dozens of notable cultural figures have come together in a video series launching today with the goal to drive mass volunteer action that transforms our government this November.
Amid a slew of celebrity PSAs and reminders to vote, their message is different: “Don’t just vote this year — volunteer!”
Entitled The Last Call for The Last Weekend, the video series is the last big push for The Last Weekend, a coalition campaign organized by Swing Left and backed by more than 60 other progressive organizations including Indivisible, MoveOn, Organizing for Action, and Emily’s List to enlist people from across the country to volunteer a collective 1 million hours to help get out the vote when volunteering matters most: on the last weekend before the midterm elections (Saturday 11/3 – Tuesday 11/6).

No, youth of America, parmesan is not a vegan food item. But damn if that doesn’t stop Zosia Mamet from asking for them from a presumably beleaguered bodega owner in a very funny deleted scene from Danny Sangra’s “Goldbricks in Bloom.” Mamet toplines the feature, which smartly and sharply upbraids some of the worst bits of current millennial culture. Kale chips? Just the tip of the iceberg.
The film is Sangra’s feature debut, and is described as “a social satire that explores what it means to be an artist today by interweaving the story of a self-obsessed group of disenchanted young creatives with the mythic rise and fall of a New York painter.” Over the past six years, Sangra has made over 30 short films, a number of which feature interconnected characters and stories. “Goldbricks” mines that for more fun, as it pushes together some of his previous creations.

Indian-American model and actor Waris Ahluwalia got detained at a Mexican airport earlier this week and the Sikh man was questioned for wearing his turban. It's now happening to Indians in Sikh turbans. Earlier if you were a Khan you got questioned/ detained/ screened/scanned on airports. Irrfan Khan has gone through the ordeal on two occasions on American airports. Speaking about it to me he said, "More than the physical torture, it's the wounds of humiliation that never heal after you undergo such a horrific experience. It happened to me on two occasions. I was detained in New York and Los Angeles airport for secondary interrogation. I was outraged. I was told to quietly come into a room for questioning and identification verification. I wasn't allowed to talk. When I tried to ask why I was being treated this way, I was told to keep quiet. I wasn't allowed to use my phone.

Internationally celebrated director Deepa Mehta embeds herself into the Indo-Canadian gang war with her latest endeavor, Beeba Boys. She's one of the first women to direct a film of its nature, and she had a lot of insight to share about what it meant to helm a gangster flick.
Inspired by real-life events, the film follows gang leader Jeet Johal (Randeep Hooda) and his loyal group of Beeba Boys, who want to take over the Vancouver drug and arms scene. Dressed to kill (some of the stars mayhave admitted to keeping some of the wardrobe), the Boys deal with loyalty, respect, and ultimately, betrayal. While the themes are common across the genre, Beeba Boys focuses on an area that not many are aware of, as the gang war takes place within our own country.

Deepa Mehta, one of our country’s most celebrated and well-regarded filmmakers, steps into an entirely new genre in her latest cinematic venture, Beeba Boys. We never would’ve expected the director of Water and Midnight's Children to take up purchase in the crime genre, but we couldn’t be more excited to see Deepa directing well-dressed gunslingers making terrible life choices.
Beeba Boys follows Jeet Johar (Randeep Hooda), a guarded, ruthless gangster within the very real criminal underground populated by second- and third-generation Indian immigants on Canada’s west coast. As Jeet competes with rival gangs for an increasingly shrinking turf, the single father and dutiful son is forced to violently demand respect, ensuring the Beeba Boys’ continued survival in Vancouver.
Deepa Mehta’s Beeba Boys, which hits theatres October 16, also stars Waris Ahluwalia (The Darjeeling Limited, The Grand Budapest Hotel), Paul Gross (this year’s Hyena Road), Sarah Allen,...

As is our annual tradition we like to peruse the credits of the SAG Ensemble nods to see who got left out despite their film's nomination. The Film Experience started this kind of analysis ten years ago when The Aviator had some really dumb exclusions and inclusions but lots of other sites now cover the injustice. We never get credit for starting this line of Norma Rae righteous anger but, that said, at least a lot of people have it now.
Did SAG think her face looked like she'd licked a homelessman's ass?
If you aren't familiar SAG uses a system whereby only actors with solitary title cards are official nominees for the Cast category. This means if you are famous in a bit part and have a good agent you are more likely to be an official nominee than the unknown who delivered a better performance in possibly a...

Here Short Film. Luca Guadagnino‘s Here (2012) short film stars Agyness Deyn. Here‘s plot synopsis: “a short film promoting Starwood Hotels’ Luxury Collection properties…the concept is simple enough, following a young woman who travels across America and just happens to roam around some of those gorgeous Starwood Hotels that will cost you a week’s salary just to say a couple of days (Vermont’s Equinox Resort, Scottsdale’s the Phoenician and the Royal Hawaiian in Waikiki are featured in case you’re wondering).”

Yes, the merging of the worlds of cinema and advertisting isn't exactly new, with directors and actors frequently earning a bit of extra cash helming a commerical or fronting a campaign for a fashion. But rarely do we seen the kind of talented that has been assembled for the short film "Here," essentially a fifteen minute bit of hotel and costume design porn Starwood Hotels. Wes Anderson regular Waris Ahluwalia (Vikram in "The Life Aquatic" and Chief Steward in "The Darjeeling Limited") is the brainchild of the whole thing, and what you might not know, is that his regular gigs include jewelry making, running a tea shop (found under the High Line in New York City) and repping Luxury Collection's Global Explorer as their brand developer. Anyway, he helped wrangle together a few folks he's worked before including "I Am Love" star and director Tilda Swinton and Luca Guadagnino and fellow Anderson pal,...

The Darjeeling Limited was the only Wes Anderson film I had yet to see. Thanks to Criterion, I can now scratch that stat off my list, though I'm not sure I'll ever be returning to it. I don't say this because I hated it, simply because I don't feel there is much need to see it twice. I've seen it, I've moved on and there are far too many films I have not seen and others I'd much rather watch again to really give this one much of a second thought.
It should be mentioned I am not one of Anderson's die-hard followers. As much as I love Bottle Rocket and The Fantastic Mr. Fox, most of Anderson's other work (yes, even Rushmore) has done very little to interest me. That said, I can see why his fans are so loyal as most of his work follows a similar tone...

The Darjeeling Limited Directed by: Wes Anderson Written by: Wes Anderson, Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman Staring: Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman It took some time, but I did eventually warm up to Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited. I still think it's somewhat dominated -- and restricted -- by his obsessive sense of style, but the film holds some genuinely humorous moments that ultimately won me over in the end. Now, three years after it's theatrical release, Criterion has released a fully loaded special collector's edition of the film on blu ray, making up for the lame DVD release that came before it. If you've ever had the urge to revisit Darjeeling Limited, this is definitely the way to do it. I would imagine that most people have seen the film by now so I'll keep the synopsis short. Basically, three estranged brothers plan a trip across India to...

This October, Wes Anderson’s 2007 film, the Darjeeling Limited, will finally make it’s way into the Criterion Collection. This was a much anticipated release from the earliest days of it’s availability on DVD. As Anderson’s other live action works (Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou) have all been made available as Criterion editions, many have wondered when the Darjeeling Limited with find it’s place.
When it was announced on July 15th, as has been the case recently, Criterion did not have final artwork ready to put alongside the release details on their website (see also: The Thin Red Line and Paths of Glory). When Criterion sent out their initial press notes for the October releases, they included a temporary piece of art, that was clearly not going to be used as it’s final product release artwork, due to...

Feeling the family love: Leelee Sobieski, Waris Ahluwalia, and Arden Wohl. From PatrickMcMullan.com. Last night at the cozy Wooly lounge, in New York City, the Party to Save the Pelican was held to benefit the Endangered Species Coalition. Despite the significant cool-person presence—the event's hosts included society fixture Arden Wohl, artist Tom Sachs, jewelry designer Waris Ahluwalia, and actress Leelee Sobieski—there was a palpable warmth in the room. It didn't hurt that the snugly Wooly, nestled below the Woolworth building, feels like a well-curated version of a heartland family's basement, complete with mismatched furniture, wood-beam ceilings, and some pastoral woolly-mammoth oil paintings. Original works of art and luxury services were up for silent auction, proceeds going to the coalition. One got the impression this was a labor of love from close-as-family friends who want to raise awareness and money for the endangered species that are suffering as a result of the B.

Now it's possible to spin a globe, put your finger on a spot, and pick up and travel to that destination thanks to Louis Vuitton. The venerable fashion house teamed up with photographer Todd "The Selby" Selby to create the interactive online project called the Journey of a Man's Wardrobe; it's a study of how the brand's fall-winter 2010/2001 men's line made it to the runway in Paris, and what it looks like on the backs—and in the workspaces—of creative and influential guys in Shanghai, Tokyo, and now New York City. The just-unveiled New York City leg of the journey features snapshots of men-about-town André Balazs, Waris Ahluwalia, and Ruben Toledo. (Balazs is a curious choice considering his ex-girlfriend Uma Thurman was once the face of the fashion house.) Has the recession fueled a frenzy of party-going driven by a desire for loot? It looked that way last night at the Bellissima by Blumarine fragrance launch at New York's Gramercy Park Hotel, where guests, who included Olivia Palermo, Subversive's Justin Giunta, stylist Susan Joy, and Jennifer Creel, arrived clutching swag from earlier events while other party-hoppers were getting ready to move onto the next shindig with perfume in tow. Two journalists who had already attended the Brooks Brothers launch of the Mad Men–label suit discussed their gifts: "I never go shopping now unless I have a gift card!" said one, while the other replied, "I was so happy when I found one from about six months ago in one of my pant pockets and it hadn't expired." The next stop was the debut of the Cole, Rood, and Haan line in a downtown loft complete with specialty cocktails...
