Sigmund Freud (Anthony Hopkins) and C.S. Lewis (Matthew Goode) debate their opposing views on religion verses reason on the verge of World War II, in Freud’S Last Session.
Freud’S Last Session is based on the stage play of the same name, in which the now-elderly famous Dr. Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, invites the much younger professor C. S. Lewis, a rising Oxford don who will write the Narnia book series, into his home in London, to which the Jewish doctor fled ahead of Hitler’s invading troops from his native Vienna. On the brink of Britain’s entry into WW II, these two intellectual giants meet for the first time and discuss a range of philosophical topics, including the existence...

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (Tas Rights Management), with three added songs, came out for rent (at $19.89) on the singer’s birthday (an unusual Wednesday release for PVOD). It scored well, with two #1s (both Google Play and Vudu), as well as iTunes initially. But in a surprise, “Killers of the Flower Moon” (Paramount for Apple) is back atop iTunes, while holding on well elsewhere.
Both #1s are noteworthy, as well as another factor: An unexpected decision from Universal. Normally, even as a decent performer (it has grossed $88 million), “Trolls Band Together” would have come to PVOD after three weeks in theaters. But it’s actually only available on December 19, after its fifth weekend in theaters. That took it away from competition until close to Christmas.
Curiously, “Eras” at this point is not for download, with no word on whether that will be added for last-minute gift giving. It’s...

“It’s an instant yes, if Sofia Coppola’s name is on it,” said actress Cailee Spaeny of accepting the lead role in “Priscilla,” regardless of the challenges it may bring, and the films it could be compared to. “You just don’t ask any questions, even if it’s something like this, which is so intimidating to take on. Within her hands, it’s a no-brainer.”
Long before she was tapped to star in the Oscar winner’s film adaptation of Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” Spaeny considered Coppola a personal hero who helped shape her cultural tastes. “I found Sofia’s work when I was around 15 years old, through ‘The Virgin Suicides,’” she said to IndieWire over Zoom. “I never thought about who was behind the camera until I watched her movies.” Within a year the young Missouri native got her first callback from the director...

In the new one-minute behind the scenes featurette from A24’s Priscilla, filmmaker Sofia Coppola explains that when she read Priscilla’s memoir, she was struck with what an unusual wild ride her life has been. Yet even though it’s different from what most people experience, Coppola believes that Priscilla Presley’s life and struggles are relatable.
“I’ve seen all of her movies and her sensitivity, her understanding of women – she puts her heart and soul in it,” says Priscilla Presley, adding, “I would never do this with anyone else.”
Priscilla‘s based on the bestselling memoir Elvis and Me, and was adapted and directed by Coppola. Cailee Spaeny transforms into Priscilla Presley and Jacob Elordi stars as the King of Rock and Roll.
Priscilla will open in theaters on November 3, 2023.

The hit Netflix series Sex/Life is back for a second season — and fans just can’t get enough of the red-hot chemistry between Billie, played by Sarah Shahi, and Brad, portrayed by Adam Demos. However, it isn’t just Shahi and Demos that have made the show a hit. Sex/Life is full of talented supporting actors, including Margaret Odette as Billie’s best friend, Sasha Snow. As Sasha, Odette has her fair share of steamy scenes. In a recent interview, Odette opened up about what it is like to film sex scenes, admitting that one sequence, in particular, stands out in her mind.

Netflix‘s Sex/Life has been canceled after delivering its long-awaited second season starring Sarah Shahi, Adam Demos, Margaret Odette, and Mike Vogel. The series focused on a love triangle between Shahi’s Billie, her husband Cooper (Vogel), and her past, all while taking a provocative new look at female identity and desire. After debuting in June of 2021, viewers were eager for the show’s return which didn’t take place until the beginning of March 2023. It seems that the lengthy waiting period didn’t do the show any favors, as it likely contributed to its Season 2 performance. But while viewership is likely a factor in the show’s fate, Shahi recently spoke out about her Season 2 experience and how it differed from the supportive one she had during Season 1. (Credit: Sabrina Lantos/Netflix) Speaking on Amanda Hirsch’s Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast on Tuesday, April 4, Shahi said the production was a “challenge.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Sex/Life Season 2.] The Sex/Life Season 2 finale tied all of the plots together in a shiny bow. All of the main characters end coupled up, each with the “fairy tale” ending creator and executive producer Stacy Rukeyser promised. “This season is, ultimately, a fairy tale — a sparkly fun, deliciously sexy one,” Rukeyser said in a statement ahead of the March 2 premiere on Netflix. “So those looking for more daring, empowered, female-gaze sexuality and TikTok-worthy watercooler moments will not be disappointed! There are stunning surprises for both Team Cooper and Team Brad, while Sarah Shahi continues to shine as Billie, and act as a surrogate for women (and men) everywhere who have ever wondered, ‘What if?’” Sabrina Lantos/Netflix Those stunning surprises were aplenty. Cooper’s (Mike Vogel) surprises came in the form of his own reckless behavior as he downward spiraled from his and Billie’s (Sarah Shahi) divorce. Brad (Adam Demos...

Everyone is moving on in Sex/Life Season 2. February 2’s teaser showed Billie (Sarah Shahi) and Brad’s (Adam Demos) steamy reunion, but the new Sex/Life Season 2 trailer shows a very different scene. In the video above, Billie and Brad are far from together, as he reveals he’s with someone new following Billie’s rejection of his proposal last season. And Cooper (Mike Vogel) declares his and Billie’s marriage is all but over. With her husband and her lover scorned, Billie has no choice but to move on. She ends up diving into a new fling with Darius Homayoun‘s Majid (below). Sabrina Lantos/Netflix Sex/Life is the story of a love triangle between a woman, her husband, and her past that takes a provocative new look at female identity and desire. And it’s not just Billie who’s exploring the far reaches of her sexuality in Season 2 either.

Chiara Aurelia’s initial reaction to reading the script for the R-rated “Luckiest Girl Alive” film adaptation of the novel by Jessica Knoll was one of terror. But that drew her even closer to the material.
“The first time that I read the script, my initial reaction was ‘Wow, this is terrifying,’ and thinking that the role was such a challenge and that it would really stretch me as a person,” she told TheWrap in a recent interview alongside co-star Mila Kunis, who plays an older version of Aurelia’s character. “That immediately gravitated me towards it. And also I think I really look for — actresses like Mila have seriously paved the way for me at my age (at which co-star Kunis chuckled) — I’m saying even in the last 10 years, it’s changed so much to where there’s so many more multi-dimensional female characters.”
For Kunis, Knoll’s writing captivated her.

Howard Shore on Judith Clurman and the Juilliard connection in casting Daniel Mutlu as the cantor in The Song Of Names: “He was able to learn the new piece and create the role with Judith's help. She was really instrumental in creating that scene. And particularly the congregation, so that the response was accurate.” Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
In the second half of my conversation at Sony in New York with three-time Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore, we discussed what director François Girard wanted for the Paganini battle of the violins in The Song Of Names, performed by the 'great virtuoso' Ray Chen, the help from Brooklyn Heights Synagogue conductor and choral director Judith Clurman in the casting of the cantor played by Daniel Multu, and where in the film Shore used a chamber orchestra with ten male singers when he recorded the score with the Orchestre Métropolitain in Montreal.

This is not how we are used to seeing Nicole Kidman. Kidman plays snarling, violent, even grizzled Los Angeles police detective bent on vengeance, in the gritty crime thriller Destroyer.
Kidman also plays a younger, more innocent rookie cop version of the character, Erin Bell, in flashback. As the younger version, Kidman looks like herself, as we are used to seeing her, but as the older, hardened cop, she is nearly unrecognizable.
That Kidman’s character is damaged goods, and was once a far different person, as made clear by the reaction of her police co-workers when she appears unexpectedly at the crime scene that opens the film. A body with bullet holes is found in a little-visited area near the Los Angeles river, sparking a murder investigation,...

For two decades, Sarah Polley has been desperately trying to adapt Margaret Atwood's book about a young woman who was abused, mistreated and silenced in the mid-1800s. By the time the 38-year-old actor-turned-writer/director brought the author's 1996 historical novel Alias Grace to the small screen – the six-hour miniseries began streaming on Netflix in early November – she had no idea she'd end up discussing the very same issues taking place in the 21st century. "I was imagining when I did press for [this], I would be introducing this as a conversation,...

Chicago – The sly satires of Whit Stillman have cultivated a fan base that appears to consist largely of his fellow peers. Manhattan-based filmmakers such as Wes Anderson, Noah Baumbach and Lena Dunham have cited his subdued comedies as an influence on their own similarly mannerist yet considerably more accessible work. For many moviegoers, Stillman’s brilliantly constructed, emotionally distant pictures are easy to admire but difficult to like.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The young, upwardly mobile “urban haute bourgeoisie” that populate his films serve as the target for Stillman’s observational, deeply affectionate humor. These characters may have big vocabularies and even bigger egos, but they are ultimately no less vulnerable and naive than their fellow peers in the lower social classes. I’ll never forget the hilarious scene in Stillman’s best film, 1998’s “The Last Days of Disco,” where a group of twentysomethings utilize their long-winded skills of analyses to pick...
