BBC One renews “Staged”; Tencent strikes European deals; U.K. Producers’ Guild launches diversity plan; India’s PVR adds former IMAX chief; and Channel 4 orders royal documentary series.
U.K. broadcaster BBC has ordered a second season of comedy “Staged,” created by Simon Evans and Phin Glynn, and starring Michael Sheen (“Good Omens”) and David Tennant (“Des”) from Infinity Hill and Gcb Films.
Shot during lockdown, the first season starred Tennant and Sheen as two actors whose West End play has been put on hold due to Covid-19, but whose director has persuaded them to carry on rehearsing online. The new series sees the pair attempt to navigate their new normal at home with their increasingly exasperated families, while simultaneously trying to tackle the world of virtual Hollywood.
Following on from the surprise appearances in season one of Judi Dench and Samuel L. Jackson, this season will have more celebrity guests.

While writer-director Brad Bird was working on “The Incredibles” at Pixar, he spent a lot of time with studio co-founder Steve Jobs, and he believes some of the things he learned from the late Apple mogul are lessons that movie theater owners should take to heart with moviegoing in crisis.
“We were talking about merchandising and he said, ‘Fewer things, better things,’ and he was dead on,” Bird said Tuesday during a panel on the future of theatrical movies at TheWrap’s virtual edition of TheGrill. “The studios’ focus has always been about the number of screens and not the quality of screens. On opening day, it’s possible to see a $300 million movie on the terrible, Coke-stained five-foot screen with 10 seats, and you should not be able to see a big movie on its opening in those kinds of conditions.”

Even though numbers for “Tenet” remain low in the U.S. and theaters face several more months of pandemic-fueled turbulence, Warner Bros.’ head of international distribution, Andrew Cripps, on Tuesday defended the film’s box office performance.
“If I can use a phrase from our chairman, Toby Emmerich: ‘It’s a 30-day opening, not a three-day opening,'” Cripps said at TheWrap’s virtual 2020 edition of TheGrill. “We’re in the fourth week and it’s important to note that as of Sunday we’ve broken $250 million internationally. When you do the math, that’s roughly 30 million people coming to see the movie in theaters, which is remarkable considering the situation we are in right now.”
Cripps was joined on the panel about the state of theatrical distribution by Alamo Drafthouse CEO Shelli Taylor, Skydance President/COO Jesse Sisgold, and filmmakers Brad Bird (“The Incredibles”) and Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day...

Welcome to TheGrill 2020.
For the first time, we are convening our annual summit about the changes that technology brings to the entertainment industry — over a streaming platform. Now that seems almost normal. Eight months ago, I didn’t dream of such a thing.
But of course, eight months ago the world was a different place.
With a global pandemic impacting every aspect of entertainment, media, politics and culture, accelerating all the trends we’ve examined at TheGrill for the last 10 years, it is a remarkable moment in time, one that will be discussed, debated and analyzed for decades to come.
The next three days will be part of the first draft of history. This year, TheGrill provides a forum for urgent issues that will define the immediate future of the entertainment business. We have worked hard to bring together some exciting voices that will speak to the moment we are in,...

With moviegoing in limbo in key markets like New York and LA, a trio of movie theater boosters see the Covid-19 operating environment staying murky for at least a few more weeks. They also see exhibitors as more likely to try to play the long game than execute a quick strategic pivot.
“We’re not very good, or at least don’t have a lot of practice, at being nimble and coming up with a completely new model after all of these years,” former Imax exec Greg Foster said of stakeholders in the theatrical business.
Foster, now a consultant for Apple, Parasite producer Cj and others, joined Patrick Corcoran and Phil Contrino from the National Association of Theatre Owners on a virtual panel at Goldman Sachs Communacopia.
Contrino, director of media and research for NATO, said “maybe about 10” major releases have gone out as premium video on demand (PVOD) titles.

Showplace Cinemas in Evansville, Ind., opened its doors for the first time in two months on June 14. But just two weeks later, the movie theater was forced to turn off its marquee again.
It wasn’t the government that shut the business down — it was the law of supply and demand.
“We weren’t making any money,” says Mick Stieler, president of the company.
The state limited theaters to 50% capacity, yet even with a steep discount, ticket sales didn’t come close to filling those social-distanced venues. Stieler found he was losing more money with the theater open than with it closed.
“I thought we’d do twice as much as what we did,” he says. “Who knows how long it’s going to take for the public to feel Ok to go out. They’re not ready yet. I think maybe September or October.”

Apple is kicking off its foray into film by playing ball with Hollywood. The tech giant on Friday announced theatrical release dates for its first three films, coming this fall.
First comes the company’s acclaimed wildlife documentary “The Elephant Queen,” which will open in theaters on Oct. 18 before landing on Apple’s Apple TV+ streaming service Nov. 1.
The documentary, which Apple describes as “a genre-redefining film,” follows Athena, an elephant matriarch who will do everything in her power to protect her family when they are forced to leave their watering hole. “The Elephant Queen” is a story of love, loss and coming home, and is a timely love letter to a species that could be gone from our planet in a generation.

Apple has charted the first round of release dates for its original film slate — which includes the tech giant’s grand entrance into American movie theaters.
With the help of three boutique distribution companies, Apple will be taking titles including Anthony Mackie’s “The Banker,” Minhal Baig’s “Hala” and the buzzy wildlife doc “The Elephant Queen” into select cities nationwide before the titles upload to Apple TV Plus, Variety can report exclusively.
“The Banker,” which stars Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson as unlikely real estate and finance moguls in the Jim Crow era, will open in the awards corridor on December 6. New York-based distributor Bleecker Street is consulting on the release, two insiders close to the project said. It’s expected to hit Apple TV Plus in January.

Apple may be following Netflix when it comes to streaming, but the tech giant is taking its own approach when it comes to releasing its movies.
Apple plans on releasing its movies weeks before they become available on its upcoming streaming service, Apple TV+, according to The Wall Street Journal on Friday.
Apple did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Apple is set to launch its streaming service Apple TV+ in November. But before the service goes live, the tech company is hoping to solve one of the major issues that has affected Netflix over the last year — theatrical release.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is already meeting with theater chains and seeking help from the former IMAX head of entertainment, Greg Foster, in an effort to make sure that the tech company is seen as an ally for theaters and not an adversary, a la Netflix.

Apple is looking to release original films in theaters — so they’ll be eligible for awards consideration — by putting them exclusively in theaters for several weeks before they hit its Apple TV Plus streaming service, according to a new report.
The tech giant has recently made “overtures” to cinema chains about the plans, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing anonymous sources. The Journal didn’t identify which exhibitors Apple has reached out to.
Apple’s theatrical-release plans aren’t surprising, as the move is designed to put films in contention for Hollywood laurels. Under the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ most recent rules, for example, in order for films to be eligible for Oscars consideration they must run in qualifying theaters (including in a theater in Los Angeles County) for at least seven consecutive days, with at least three showings daily.

Summer blockbusters such as “The Meg” and “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” helped Imax beat third quarter earnings expectations.
The giant screen exhibitor reported earnings of $5.02 million and revenue of $82.1 million. The compared favorably to a loss of $850,000 in the year-ago period, but was down slightly from the $98.8 million in revenues that the company reported during the same quarter in 2017. Earnings per share of 14 cents were up from 8 cents in the prior year quarter.
Imax’s results roundly beat projects. Wall Street analysts’ forecasts predicted the company would post earnings per share of 11 cents on $81.2 million. In addition to a few well-timed popcorn movie hits, Imax also benefited from the Chinese box office. The exhibitor has invested heavily in the Asian market in recent years, building a number of locations. The company’s theatrical haul in China increased 30.5% in the third quarter, which Imax attributed to a number of local language successes.

Imax said in its third-quarter earnings report on Thursday that the Greater China box office increased 30.5 percent in the third quarter, compared to last year, driven by a compelling slate of Hollywood and Chinese local language blockbusters.
The premium format exhibitor reported adjusted earnings of 14 cents per share, up from 8 cents per share during the same three-month period a year ago. Imax’s third-quarter earnings were also above Wall Street’s expectations for 11 cents per share, according to estimates gathered by Yahoo Finance.
Revenue for the quarter hit $82.1 million, which was down 20 percent compared with the $98.8 million the company reported during the same quarter last year. The company’s reported revenue was, however, just above Wall Street’s...

Megan Colligan, the former marketing and distribution chief at Paramount Pictures, has been tapped as president of Imax Entertainment and vice president of Imax Corporation.
It’s a changing of the guard at the highest levels of an exhibition giant that has become a major force in popcorn movies. Colligan replaces Greg Foster, who has served as Imax’s ambassador to Hollywood for the past 18 years. Foster will depart the wide-screen company, where he served as CEO of Imax Entertainment, at the end of 2018. At Imax, Foster forged strong ties with the creative community, forming alliances with the likes of Christopher Nolan, J.J. Abrams, and Joe and Anthony Russo that paid off with the directors using the company’s cameras to shoot their movies.

Wonder Woman 1984 is now roughly a month into principal photography, but at this early stage of production, plot details remain sparse. We’ve yet to see Kristen Wiig in her Cheetah costume, Pedro Pascal’s character remains a question mark (though we did get our first look at him the other day), and we still don’t know how, exactly, Chris Pine will return from the dead.
Nonetheless, seeing as Wonder Woman is the only successful release thus far for Worlds of DC, I doubt the unknown will scare off many fans. Not to mention there’s also the good news we’ve received this week telling us that director Patty Jenkins will be shooting “select sequences” of the sequel with IMAX cameras, joining The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice as DC films to have used the technology.

Analysts and distribution execs have pointed to many different factors when discussing the record-breaking box office success of “Avengers: Infinity War,” but all of them say that this past weekend’s big triumph for Marvel Studios is also a triumph for “Black Panther,” as Ryan Coogler’s cultural phenomenon served as a perfect lead-in to Marvel’s big crossover.
“You really couldn’t have set up a one-two punch any better,” said IMAX Entertainment CEO Greg Foster. “‘Black Panther’ was a film where audience interest peaked at the exact time it was being released, and that’s the goal you’re always trying to get with a big film.”

“And it created this rabid fanbase behind Black Panther and the other characters right at the time when promotion for ‘Infinity War’ was ramping up, and the team at Disney and Marvel Studios deserve all the credit in the world for cultivating that desire to see more of Wakanda.”
But when “Infinity War” was being written, no one had any idea that “Black Panther” would become the enormous hit that it became, even though the man behind the mask, T’Challa, made his introduction in “Captain America: Civil War.” There was even one point when “Black Panther” was to be released after “Infinity War.” But in October 2015, was moved back to its February release date to accommodate “Ant-Man and The Wasp.”
Regardless of when it was going to be released, development of “Infinity War” began well before anyone at Marvel Studios knew how “Black Panther” was going to be received. According to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, this is something they’re well used to. He notes that when Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans — a.k.a. Thor and Captain America — began filming for “The Avengers” in 2011, the solo film debuts hadn’t even been released yet.
“We have a tradition of having all the chips on the table of going all in. That was the same thing here,” Feige told TheWrap ahead of the release of “Infinity War.”

“We believed in Panther, we believed in Chad. We knew audiences liked him from Civil War certainly, but we believe in the other Wakandans that you would meet and Wakanda as a location. So it was always the idea to incorporate that. Assume that audiences would have seen Black Panther, been familiar with it, want to see more of it, and include it in a big part, in a big way in Infinity War.”
It certainly was included in a big way, with Wakanda serving as the site of the film’s climax while T’Challa’s brilliant sister, Shuri, plays a crucial role in the Avengers’ desperate plan to stop Thanos. That footage of Wakanda became a prominent part of the promotion of “Infinity War,” with T’Challa’s order to “get this man a shield” becoming a highlight of the film’s trailer, while one of its most shared promotional images was of Black Panther and Okoye, the breakout heroine played by Danai Gurira, charging into battle alongside the other famous Marvel heroes.

With Avengers: Infinity War now just a week away, film industry analysts are almost as excited by its financial projections as Marvel fans are of seeing the culmination of a decade of superhero action. There’s no doubt it’ll break all sorts of box office records, but today, the Wall Street Journal (Paywall) is reporting that it might take the top prize – that being the biggest domestic opening weekend of all-time.
Right now, the Disney/Marvel Studios film is just a hair behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi in total pre-sales, having shifted an impressive $50 million from advance ticket sales alone. But it could be set to overtake both Star Wars movies, as WSJ’s data suggests that audience interest in seeing Infinity War is higher than either of the recent entries in that galaxy far, far away and what it calls “comparable blockbusters.

Summer is just around the corner. That means that as temperatures rise, spandexed heroes, man-eating dinos and globe-trotting spies will soon be flooding multiplexes. The studios hope that a stream of would-be blockbusters such as “Deadpool 2,” “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” and “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” will connect with audiences, lifting the box office to record heights.
“The big tentpole blockbuster movies are what get people to turn off their smartphones and get off their couch and go to the multiplex,” says Greg Foster, CEO of Imax Entertainment.
It’s all further evidence that by embracing a franchise-centric model, mainstream Hollywood long ago abandoned originality for familiarity, believing that having a Roman numeral in the title was the best way to preserve investments and keep the public coming back for more. But there’s a downside to the strategy.
The movie business hasn’t done a great job of replenishing the well.

Case in point: IMAX Entertainment CEO Greg Foster believes Black Panther is a movie that has “clearly captured the zeitgeist,” while also hinting that advanced ticket sales are yet to reach their peak.
Pre-sales are the surest way to see how momentum is going. The momentum is gathering steam as opposed to slowing down. A movie often peaks 10 days before it opens. This movie feels like it’s going to peak the day it opens. It’s remarkable.

This past weekend saw the fairly quiet release of the first couple episodes of Marvel’s The Inhumans onto IMAX. The presentation only made around $1.5 million domestically, and critically, these episodes were raked over the coals by most outlets.
This doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise for a lot of us who saw plenty to criticize based on the trailers. Between the cheap-looking sets, shoddy premise, and questionable writing (again, all based on the trailers), it seemed like a far shot that this would even compare to the likes of the Marvel Netflix series in terms of quality. However, what may come as a surprise is that despite the criticism and soft IMAX response, Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb is looking back fondly on this experience, telling Cbr:

I'm not the biggest fan of 3D movies. There's only a handful of 3D films that I've actually thought was really cool. But, for the most part, studios are releasing 3D movies to charge audiences an extra fee. I won't pay for a 3D movie as long as I have the choice not to.
My preferred movie going theatrical experience is IMAX 2D. Have you seen I Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk in IMAX? Holy shit... it was amazing! That's the perfect example of how I like to experience my movies!

Imax looks to be jumping off the 3D bandwagon.
The giant-screen exhibitor on Wednesday said it will play more digital 2D versions of Hollywood movies domestically, given a "clear preference" from consumers for 2D in North America, according to Imax CEO Richard Gelfond.
Imax Entertainment CEO Greg Foster confirmed during an analyst call that his company will start playing fewer 3D versions of movies and more 2D versions. "The demand for 2D films is starting to exceed 3D in North America," Foster said.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion — a sequel to a mythical tale about warring royal cousins in an ancient kingdom that opened April 28 in the U.S. and already is the top-grossing Indian movie import of all time with $17.2 million — was fueled by two factors: the boom in the Indian-American population and their disproportionately high use of social media.
"The social media power of the Indian diaspora is incredibly strong," says Imax Entertainment CEO Greg Foster, whose chain played Baahubali on 40 screens in North America. "Did you see one traditional commercial for...

IMAX reported strong fourth-quarter and full-year earnings Thursday, despite the fact that 2016’s movie landscape did not yield as many giant screen-friendly global blockbusters as the year before, when “Jurassic World,” “Furious 7” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” took the globe by storm. The company is expecting 2017 to tell a very different story. “On paper, it looks like there should be a blockbuster title in every month of the year,” Greg Foster, the CEO of IMAX Entertainment, said on the earnings call. “If 2016 was about doubles, 2017 will be about home runs.” Foster added that about half of...

A few weeks back, Marvel shocked everyone when they announced that they’d be bringing The Inhumans to television. It was surprising because many people thought that if anything, the characters would appear in a future Phase 4 film, not on the small screen. Fans had also assumed that the studio scrapped plans for the titular heroes, since we hadn’t heard about them in quite some time.
It seems that big things are in store for our beloved Inhumans though, and we mean that quite literally. That’s because the first two episodes of the show will premiere on IMAX screens and are being shot on IMAX cameras, in order to bring audiences “cinema-quality visual effects.” As such, hype and excitement is rapidly mounting for the project and it seems as if IMAX is already looking to increase their presence in the TV world.
