It’s Thanksgiving Week, which means it’s time to theme our horror viewing accordingly. Because tradition is a cornerstone of holiday celebrations, expect to find requisite Thanksgiving horror along with an unconventional holiday pick or two on this list. These titles share the core themes of the holiday, either through the rituals of preparing meals or a sense of family togetherness through survival, even if they’re not always actually set on Thanksgiving.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

There’s something wonderfully nerve-rattling about a “survive the night” horror scenario, whether it’s a handful of strangers trying to fend off crazed zombies in “Night of the Living Dead” or a group of sarcastic Gen Z friends suspecting each other of murder in “Bodies Bodies Bodies.”
Here are some of our favorite entries in this subgenre, where the weapons are improvised, the stakes are life and death and there’s no guarantee anyone will get out alive.
We did not include movies that take place over a few days (like “Battle Royale”) or movies that aren’t streaming right now, like “Ready or Not.”
Night of the Living Dead (1968) Continental Distributing
George Romero’s low-budget chiller, in which the dead come back to life and prey on the living, still packs a wallop more than 50 years later. Ben (Duane Jones) takes charge as shellshocked people shelter inside an isolated farmhouse…...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
In 2013, a home invasion horror movie was released that made a ridiculous amount of money relative to its tiny production budget which helped launch the career of a now-prominent filmmaker. That may sound like "The Purge" but I'm actually talking about "You're Next," the beloved slasher flick that helped to put Adam Wingard on the map. Wingard has since made giant blockbusters like "Godzilla vs. Kong," which helped bring movie theaters back to life in 2021 in the aftermath of the quarantine era of the pandemic. Wingard is now an A-list director, and that journey pretty much starts with this movie.

The 35th edition of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week is officially underway, marking the return of the annual fan-favorite weeklong shark celebration. Shark Week began in 1988 as a fun means of educating audiences on the aquatic predator, counteracting the negative representations of sharks in popular culture that began with the seminal aquatic horror feature Jaws (now available to stream on Peacock).
Jaws didn’t just make people afraid to go into the water; its massive blockbuster success inspired an enduring wave of “sharksploitation” horror that’s become a summer mainstay. Naturally, in celebration of Shark Week, this week’s streaming picks bring the aquatic terror. Shudder’s new documentary Sharksploitation breaks down this subgenre further, packed with insights from filmmakers and scientists alike, for further viewing to complete your Shark Week watchlists.

With the merge imminent on “Australian Survivor: Heroes V Villains,” the remaining contestants are about to enter the second half of the game in Samoa. But before we get to Jonathan Lapaglia‘s long-awaited “Drop your buffs” moment, we want to know who You think is playing the best pre-merge game? As of this writing, there are still 13 castaways left in the game: eight original Heroes and five original Villains. However, the players are all intermingled at this point thanks to various twists, including Gerry Geltch being voted onto the opposing tribe, an official tribe swap at an auction, and Elizaveta “Liz” Parnov choosing to mutiny. The premiere episode of “Australian Survivor: Heroes V Villains” ended with a shocking tribal council in which the Villains truly lived up to their name. To recap, two of their 12 tribe members, Jackie Glazier from “Champions vs. Contenders” (2018) and George Mladenov from “Brains V Brawn,” ended up getting seriously injured in the immunity challenge. They were both sent to the hospital, where they would be able to remain for 24 hours, per the show’s rules, before being permanently removed.
After the Villains tribe lost the challenge and attended tribal council, host Jonathan Lapaglia had them vote as usual, without announcing Jackie or George’s conditions. The votes were cast and then Jonathan revealed that Jackie’s fractured collarbone was too serious for her to remain on the island, so she was officially out. George’s injury was less severe, though he would still be kept overnight at the infirmary as they monitored him.

The rumors are true. Sandra Diaz-Twine‘s daughter Alanna “Nina” Twine is back when “Australian Survivor” returns for its 10th season on Network 10. The iconic duo played together last year on “Blood V Water,” but Nina had to be medevaced when she hurt her ankle. Now, the show is producing a “Heroes V Villains” installment with Nina on the Heroes tribe (Queen Sandra is not participating). Scroll through our gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see the “Australian Survivor: Heroes V Villains” cast photos for all 24 participants.
This “Heroes V Villains” installment is scheduled to premiere on January 30, 2023, with 11 returning players and 13 new castaways divided into two tribes based on how they live their lives or how they previously played the game, either as Heroes or Villains. It’s based on the popular 20th season of the American version of the show, which Villains tribe member Sandra ultimately won.

When Jamie Lee Curtis walked the black carpet outside the Tcl Chinese Theatre on Tuesday night for the world premiere of “Halloween Ends,” she was less than 24 hours away from becoming permanently cemented into Hollywood history — or at least, more so than she’s already been — with a hand and footprint ceremony on Wednesday morning.
“I’m, of course, thrilled, honored,” Curtis told Variety about being immortalized outside the theatre. “My family will be there with me, friends, colleagues, collaborators, the community of artists. I’m an artist, I get to make this work. I didn’t think I’d be an actor. I thought I’d be a cop. So the idea that I get to be an actor and do this beautiful work is really very powerful to me.”

A red band trailer has been released for home invasion thriller Becky, revealing the kind of inventive and unflinching violence we can expect from the movie.
The story follows the eponymous teenage girl, whose father takes her to his remote lake house to reconnect following the death of her mother and drop the bombshell that he intends to remarry. What should have been just a family melodrama is ratcheted up in tension upon the arrival of a band of escaped convicts in search of a mysterious key who brutalize Becky’s family, whereupon she uses all at her disposal as improvised weaponry to fight back against the invaders as they hunt her through the surrounding woods, the inevitable result being the gruesome deaths and mutilations the trailer showcases.

In the age of Tinder and Bumble, finding new love can be as simple as a single swipe. But sometimes the prospects of meeting a total stranger can lead down some dark paths only visible with time. That’s the central theme throughout “What Keeps You Alive,” a smart and timely thriller from director Colin Minihan.
The filmmaker reimagines old horror tropes — particularly one half of a couple turning on the another in a remote location — through a topical lens. “What Keeps You Alive” is a chilling look at the unraveling of a relationship, and what happens when inner demons come bubbling to the surface to turn betrayal into bloodshed, bolstered by superb performances and some truly shocking twists.

“It” may be a box office smash, but it’s hardly the only horror movie worth talking about these days. Just 17 years in, and the 21st century has already played home to a remarkable number of truly chilling and inventive horror offerings, from a resurgence in J-horror remakes to a continued affection for the classic series of yesteryear, to the massive dominance of the “Conjuring” movie universe and even a “Saw” franchise so dominant that it’s already cycled back into resurrection territory, and that’s just the mainstream stuff.

August’s home entertainment releases are off and running in a big way with this week’s crop of horror and sci-fi titles, as we have nearly two dozen movies coming our way this Tuesday.
Scream Factory is putting in overtime with a handful of stunning steelbooks celebrating three great John Carpenter films—They Live, The Fog and Escape From New York—as well as a Collector’s Edition of James Gunn’s Slither and the indie horror films Don’t Knock Twice and House on Willow Street (which they’ve teamed up with IFC Midnight for).
As far as recent genre movies go, Colossal, Shin Godzilla, and Phoenix Forgotten are all primed for their home bow on August 1st, and both Paramount and Universal are dusting off a bunch of recent titles on both DVD and Blu-ray, including Disturbia, The Machinist, Red Eye, and the unrated version of The Ruins.

We live in scary times that can often feel like lot more unsettling than any fictional horror movie, but some of the best horror movies tap into real world terrors — and that’s especially true of the highlights from the last two decades of the genre, one of the most varied in its history. From graphic depictions of gory showdowns to subtler looks at psychological dread, the best horror movies of the 21st century typically focused on a handful of people struggling to survive a dark force beyond their comprehension. Who can’t relate to that? Here are 20 of the most potent examples, ranked from top to bottom.
20. “The Descent” (2005)
Neil Marshall’s economical monster movie takes place almost exclusively within the confines of a shadowy cave and the terrible, terrible things lurking within it. After a gradual beginning in which coworkers and friends venture into a cave during their...

It’s a wonder there are any kidnappings at all these days. After all, anyone who routinely watches genre movies knows that they never turn out well. Unfortunately for them, the hapless villains in the new horror film by Alastair Orr (Indigenous) apparently aren’t cinephiles, and they’ve made a serious mistake choosing their victim who resides at the titular abode in A House on Willow Street.

It’s not easy being a kidnapper. And it only gets worse when the person you abduct isn’t quite the innocent victim you expected.

"You should really let me go... Or you're all going to die tonight." IFC Midnight has released the official trailer for an indie horror film titled House on Willow Street, formerly From a House on Willow Street (the full title when it premiered at FrightFest last year). From director Alastair Orr, the film is about a group of kidnappers who take a young woman from a house on Willow Street. They soon find out they chose the wrong person to kidnap, as the girl is actually a demonic killer herself. Sharni Vinson stars, along with Carlyn Burchell, Steven Ward, Zino Ventura, and Gustav Gerdener. This film actually looks totally crazy and freaky and violent and everything. It gets even weirder when the special effects kick in. Have fun. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Alastair Orr's House on Willow Street, from IFC's YouTube: After a young woman (Sharni Vinson) is kidnapped,...

Two personal highlights for me at this year’s convention have to be the Scream Reunion Screening and Q&A on Saturday evening, featuring Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, and Matthew Lillard, as well as seeing Don Coscarelli returning to Flashback, this time with Phantasm: Remastered in tow.

One of my very favorite horror conventions has always been Flashback Weekend in Chicago, Illinois. For years, I attended Flashback as a fan and for the last six years, it’s been a huge honor for me to head back to serve as one of the convention co-hosts and work with Mike and Mia Kerz, two of the most selfless folks you’ll ever meet working in the industry.
Flashback Weekend will be celebrating its 15th anniversary this August 5th through the 7th and is being held at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare (5440 N. River Road, Chicago). This year’s schedule is shaping up to be yet another incredible time for midwestern horror fans, and there are still many announcements to come! So far, attendees can look forward to a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Scream, with a cast reunion featuring Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, and Matthew Lillard.

For as much criticism as the horror genre receives for being sexist and misogynistic, it has a long history of strong characters and iconic performances from women, whether it’s Elsa Lanchester in The Bride of Frankenstein, Heather Langenkamp in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Janet Leigh in Psycho, or Sharni Vinson in You’re Next. In the late 1970s and ’80s, actresses who stood out within the genre were dubbed “Scream Queens.” But that title doesn’t do justice to Daria Nicolodi, frequent collaborator of Dario Argento and a titan of Italian horror. That’s because Daria Nicolodi is no Scream Queen. Daria Nicolodi is a goddamn goddess.
A too often unsung hero of genre cinema, Daria Nicolodi helped shape the face of Italian horror both in front of and behind the camera. The story goes that Florence-born Nicolodi was so taken with Argento’s first film, The Bird With the Crystal Plumage,...

“I didn’t pick isolation; isolation picked me.” In just a few years, Mike Flanagan has evolved into one of the more interesting genre directors out there with films like Absentia, Oculus, and the upcoming Before I Wake. With the home invasion thriller Hush, Flanagan embraces his indie roots with yet another exceptional character-driven horror experience that proves there are still effective ways to terrify audiences when you have a strong concept, smart script and talented cast at your disposal.
Hush centers on Maddie (Kate Siegel), a writer who specializes in crafting thriller novels and lives in isolation after bacterial meningitis claimed her voice and her hearing at an early age. Being perfectly content to shut out a world she already feels distanced from, her only real companions are her cat named Bitch and a handful of neighbors, including Sarah (Samantha Sloyan), who does her best to keep the reluctant...

Director Ron Bonk, who has been in the B-Movie business since 1992 and was responsible for distributing some of St. Louis’ own Eric Stanze’s work onto VHS, is trying to get some money together to make an homage to Jaws called House Shark. Not to crib from the campaign of Pieces but, it’s exactly what you think it is. Sure, Burning Bright had a family trapped in a house with a tiger (Awesome flick, if you haven’t seen it) and even Bait, starring You’re Next’s Sharni Vinson, where people are trapped in a supermarket with a shark. House Shark is something entirely different. Instead of taking it seriously like the two previous movies I’ve mentioned, this one is going straight for the absurdity. Hear his pitch below:
Bonk has an IndieGoGo campaign where he is trying to raise $15,000 to get this film made, with a...

When corrupt Roman leader Tiberius arrives with a giant army to claim the Silk Road, Huo An teams up his army with an elite Legion of defected Roman soldiers led by General Lucius to protect his country and his new friends.

Adi Shankar is not your typical movie maker. Along with producing features, including Dredd, The Grey, and A Walk Among the Tombstones, he also worked on a number of short films, like Venom: Truth in Journalism with True Blood’s Ryan Kwanten, and the dark and gritty Power/Rangers short he made with Joseph Kahn. Now, he’s directing his first feature film, and it’s a superhero movie, no less. But what’s most interesting is the insane cast he's put together. According to The Wrap, the film Adi Shankar’s Gods and Secrets features WWE star “Diamond” Dallas Page, as well as Twilight stars Kellan Lutz (Emmett) and Jackson Rathbone (Jasper); You’re Next star Sharni Vinson; comedian Andy Milonakis; Denise Richards; Jane Seymour; Breaking Bad vet Rj Mitte (Walter White Jr.); and Glee stars Max Adler (Dave ...

The entertainment industry is constantly changing, and it's important to stay aware of what’s going on. Want to find out who’s casting? What projects are happening? What’s coming up? Call Sheet highlights will help you stay in-the-know: Add equal parts saccharine-sweet medicine woman and WWE legend, then throw in a meth kingpin’s son and what do you get? “Adi Shankar’s Gods and Secrets.” Jane Seymour, Diamond Dallas Page, and Rj Mitte are taking on the drama about the dark side of super heroes in the film cast by recent-Call Sheet inductee, Carmen Aiello. Rounding out the star-studded cast are Jackson Rathbone, Kellan Lutz, Sharni Vinson, and Denise Richards. Merry Christmas! Kim Coleman is heading up the holiday-themed “A Meyers Christmas” that begins shooting this fall in Atlanta. Word on the street is that binge-watching enabler, Netflix, is heading to Newfoundland this October to start shooting their new colonial inspired series,...

Yesterday we found out that producer Adi Shankar (Dredd, Punisher: Dirty Laundry) would team with Stewart Yost to co-direct a dark new superhero series for HBO titled Gods And Secrets, which is said to be (and very much sounds to be) inspired by Alan Moore's Watchmen. Now The Wrap reports that Denise Richards (Wild Things, Starship Troopers, The World Is Not Enough) and Jane Seymour (Live And Let Die, How I Met Your Mother, Battlestar Galactica) have joined the cast in unspecified roles. Gods And Secrets will focus on the exploits of a superteam known as the "Guardians of Justice", and will explore "the darker ramifications of a world filled with superheroes — for the people they protect and the famous heroes themselves." Former WWE Superstar Diamond Dallas Page, Jackson Rathbone (The Twilight Saga), Kellan Lutz (The Legend Of Hercules), Sharni Vinson (You're Next) and Andy Milonakis will also star,...

Following on from his work as a producer on "Dredd" and "The Grey" along with the much talked about "Power/Rangers" fan film, Adi Shankar is set to team with Stewart Yost for his directorial debut effort "Gods And Secrets".
The project is described as a dark drama akin to Alan Moore's "Watchmen" in that it will explore the darker logical underpinnings of superhero tropes in a world in which superheroes exist and the resulting celebrity culture are front and center.
The story deals with what happens when a tragedy strikes the super heroic team Guardians of Justice, and in its aftermath secrets are revealed, lives are changed, and the war to end all wars begins.
Diamond Dallas Page, Jackson Rathbone, Kellan Lutz, Sharni Vinson and Andy Milonakis star in the project. No further specifics about it are available at this time.

Adi Shankar, the man who has produced the mainstream likes of Dredd and Lone Survivor, but is more likely to be found creating his own content with his Bootleg Universe shorts and series, has a new project in the works. He has Gods And Secrets on the way, with a cast that includes Kellan Lutz, Jackson Rathbone, Denise Richards, Jane Seymour and wrestling legend "Diamond" Dallas Page. Gods And Secrets is an indie production that dives deep into the world of superheroes and how their actions affect those around them. It’s designed to put a fresh spin on the comic book tropes and push the boundaries of what’s possible within the genre.Shankar is co-directing the instalments with Stewart Yost, working from a script by Shawn DeLoache, and the likes of Sharni Vinson, Alexandra Billings and Andy Milonakis are also among the cast. Adi Shankar, the producer behind the 'Bootleg Universe' one-shot films Power/Rangers & The Punisher: Dirty Laundry and 2012's Dredd will make his directorial debut with HBO's Gods And Secrets. According to Deadline, Shankar will team up with Stewart Yost to co-direct this dark superhero drama that's said to be inspired by Alan Moore's seminal graphic novel, Watchmen. The drama will feature an original team named 'Guardians Of Justice', and explore the more secretive and shady aspects of celebrity culture by applying it to superheroes. The series is set to star WWE's Diamond Dallas Page, Jackson Rathbone (The Twilight Saga), Kellan Lutz (The Legend Of Hercules), Sharni Vinson (You're Next) and Andy Milonakis. The core premise appears intruiging, while the project's placement on HBO should be enough to pique most people's interest. The cast is admittedly rather uninspiring, but Shankar has impressed in the past with his Bootleg one-shots.

"If you stand with us you will be butchered." Lionsgate has debuted the official Us trailer for Dragon Blade, a historic action epic from China directed by Daniel Lee, produced by & starring Jackie Chan. This "action spectacle on a grand scale" features the fight for the Silk Road when East and West collide, in a story about warriors fighting against warriors. Adrien Brody (screaming his heart out) stars as Tiberius, John Cusack stars as Lucius, Jackie Chan stars as Huo An, with Sharni Vinson as Lady Crassus, and Alice Aoki as the Queen. While the footage does look action packed, and that arrow-to-the-face shot is awesome, I'm not so sure about the rest of the hammy acting. Maybe they're just out-of-context scenes? Let's hope so. Actress Sharni Vinson and director Adam Wingard revisited their home invasion horror film, You're Next, via Twitter today, showing and discussing the alternate, original ending of the film. *Spoiler warning for those who haven't seen You're Next.*
You're Next fans will remember that the movie came to a close with one very unlucky cop stepping into a booby trap, ending the film on a memorable macabre note and leaving Erin (Sharni Vinson) as the sole survivor.
But today via Twitter, Vinson revealed a new photo that shows Erin with a bullet hole in her head, her body partially resting against Crispian (A.J. Bowen), her dead, former boyfriend. Wingard mentions that in the original ending, Erin was shot in the head by the cop. That ending was filmed and captured in the still that's shown below.

After delivering two big old blasts of genre fun with home invasion horror-comedy You’re Next and John Carpenter riff The Guest, Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett are diving back into horror for their next collaboration. Lionsgate recently snagged the pair for The Woods, a mysterious horror film that Wingard will direct from a script by Barrett.
Not much is known about the project, though it will focus on a group of college students on a camping trip who “discover they are not alone.” A few years ago, such a generic premise (done to death by the Friday the 13th franchise, among others) would have made many horror aficionados groan in agony, but then along came Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon’s delightful The Cabin in the Woods, which turned the subgenre on its head to great effect. If Wingard and Barrett can pull off a similar trick (and if...

I'm curious what the consensus will be in ten to twenty years, once we look back and evaluate the movies of 2014. It seems I continually see people referring to it as either a great year or a terrible year with little in-between. Were you to judge the year on the quality of the mainstream studio features I could see where you might be disappointed. It wasn't exactly the best year for blockbuster cinema. Hell, Christopher Nolan even came out with a new big budget film and it didn't even make it onto my list of Honorable Mentions. However, you look at the mini majors and smaller distributros, studios such as A24, Fox Searchlight, Sony Classics and Open Road and things begin to perk up, but these studios don't market their films on every channel so at the end of the year when people are asking me "what movies they should...

Director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett are known for their collaborations on A Horrible Way to Die, You’re Next, and the V/H/S franchise. They’re back at their unique brand of darkly comedic horror with The Guest (review), which opens in theaters nationwide on September 17th.
In The Guest a mysterious soldier shows up on the doorstep of the Peterson family, claiming to be a friend of their son, who died in action. After the young man is welcomed into their home, a series of accidental deaths occur, which seem oddly connected to his arrival.
We got a chance to catch up with them to ask a few questions… hope we didn’t overstay our welcome!
Dread Central: How come you built the story around a soldier, who is evil? Was there any hesitation in presenting America’s hero as a villain?
Simon Barrett: No.

Adam Wingard showed a talent for tongue-in-cheek thrills, riffing on the home invasion genre with You're Next, but with The Guest he's one-upped his game and chosen the perfect vessel for doing so in Dan Stevens. The "Downton Abbey" star plays David, a man who introduces himself to the Peterson family as a soldier and friend of their son who died in the war. More specifically he plays something of a Jason Bourne run amuck, though, for the Petersons, that might not necessarily be a bad thing... at first. Since the death of their son the Petersons appear to have grown apart. Mom (Sheila Kelley) and dad (Leland Orser) fight a lot while Luke (Brendan Meyer) is dealing with bullies at school and his older sister, Anna (Maika Monroe), is in her rebelious phase, trying to deal with the fact she's almost 21 and still living at home while saving for college.
