Natalie O’Connor was looking for a very specific type of car for production on Apple TV+’s “The Enfield Poltergeist.” A painstaking recreation of the most documented paranormal activity ever (and the inspiration for “The Conjuring 2”), the show needed a stand-in for the red E-Type Jaguar driven by lead investigator Maurice Grosse.
“We couldn’t find one anywhere, but we eventually got sent an option,” O’Connor told IndieWire. “And then we actually figured out that it was his real car.”
On a different show, that story would be charming in its serendipity. But for “The Enfield Poltergeist,” the kismet has a creepy sense of inevitability in keeping with the events that plagued the Hodgson family from 1977 to 1979, resulting in hundreds of hours of recordings capturing things that went bump in the night and disembodied voices.

On the surface, little differentiates Apple's The Enfield Poltergeist from The Enfield Haunting, a dramatized take on the famous case. Released in the U.K. in 2015 (and now streaming on Prime Video and Amazon Freevee), The Enfield Haunting hits many of the same beats as the new docuseries. Both rely heavily on Maurice Grosse's 250 hours of recordings, which describe the alleged paranormal activity in the Hodgson family home in late 1970s London, and use those details to power the plot. However, they diverge when it comes to the conclusion each draws from those recordings: If The Enfield Poltergeist begins from a place of belief, only to raise questions about the Hodgsons' claims by its fourth and final episode, The Enfield Haunting takes the opposite approach as it works to convince the audience that the ghostly disturbances were real.

The Enfield Poltergeist, directed by Jerry Rothwell, is a montage of the supernatural, science, childhood trauma, and many other aspects. This mini-documentary series pulls lightly at the strings of horror while focusing more on the scientific aspects. The events surrounding the Hodgson family and the experiences that they have had have been explored here. The intervention of Maurice Grosse, a member of the Society for Psychical Research (Spr), between 1977 and 1978 with more than 200 hours of tape recordings has been highlighted. The four-part mini-documentary series brings out a real-life infamous case of the haunting at a house in Enfield, reminding us of similar movies based on real-life stories like The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Amityville Horror, and others. Was Maurice able to rid the Hodgsons of the torture of the poltergeist? Was Janice really possessed, or was she faking things to garner attention? Let us look into what several witnesses...

Just in time for the scariest day of the year (unless you’re Justin Timberlake…that day came earlier this week with Brit‘s book), Apple TV+ is set to unleash the The Enfield Poltergeist, a genre-defying four-part series that exhumes the historic 1977-79 haunting of the UK’s Hodgson family. You may know the story as it was adapted in 2016’s The Conjuring 2, but you’ve never seen it told in such deep detail. Thanks to a curious British press at the time and the efforts of paranormal investigator Maurice Grosse, the Enfield case is one of the most-documented accounts of paranormal activity. The tale of a supernatural entity attacking young Janet Hodgson gripped the nation and sold millions of papers. That provided director Jerry Rothwell with a trove of photos and recordings from investigative interviews. “We were interested that this extensive archival record existed of a situation...

Apple TV+ has announced that they will be releasing the four-part documentary The Enfield Poltergeist – which tells about the case that served as inspiration for The Conjuring 2 – on October 27th, just in time for Halloween viewings. Along with that announcement comes the unveiling of a trailer for the docu-series, and you can check it out in the embed above.
According to Deadline, The Enfield Poltergeist relies on more than 250 hours of audio archive to help recreate the infamous events in Enfield. Throughout four episodes, the events at Enfield are reconstructed using the recordings captured by Maurice Grosse, a paranormal investigator who archived all of his interviews from back in the day. The doc built a replica of the council house where the incidents took place so performers could reenact what is heard on the tapes.
The docu-series also features appearances by people who were actually involved in the haunting case.

Lorraine Warren has seen true evil at the start of The Conjuring 2 and wants to call it quits — at least for a while — but when the Hodgson family finds itself under siege by a terrible haunting, the paranormal investigators have no choice but to help. Set in the late ’70s in the London Borough of Enfield, The Conjuring 2 ticks off many of the same boxes as the original: haunted house, demonic possession, and a relentless pace full of jump scares that doesn’t let up until the Warrens are back in their spooky museum, locking away their latest ghostly trinket just before the credits roll.
And like the first movie, which is based on the real-life investigations of demonologist Ed Warren and the clairvoyant Lorraine, The Conjuring 2 is heavily inspired by a true story, one that captured the attention of British tabloids — and even the BBC — just...

Paranormal Investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren were never that deeply involved with the real life paranormal case which took place on 284 Green Street, Enfield — a borough in London, England. The Conjuring 2 is a compression of a few facts from the investigation and, as with most movie adaptations, never truly take into account all the details. Huge liberties are taken and I'm sure the real Janet Hodgson (played in the film by Madison Wolfe) does not approve of certain alterations. The case lasted for about two years instead of weeks. The investigators who spent months on this case were Spr members Guy Lyon Playfair and Maurice Grosse — the latter barely gets enough of a spotlight. While this group of researchers are modestly credited, the shift in who are the heroes is more disheartening in the long run. Psychology professor Anita Gregory received a nod in this fictional account and John Beloff is ignored. As for who were involved requires looking into the documents filed...

Hello again, dear readers. I hope the year is off to a good start for all of you. It’s coming to you later than I intended, but here’s the first Trailer Trashin’ column of 2016. Now let’s take a look at the teaser trailer for director James Wan’s upcoming horror sequel The Conjuring 2.
Premise: Husband and wife paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) travel to north London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits.
My take: Ever since I first saw The Conjuring (2013), it’s been one of my favorite horror movies. Inspired by the work of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, it was a smartly written, sharply directed film with good scares, a talented cast playing characters we actually cared about, and which made good use of its period 1970s setting.
