Happy Halloween!
Welcome to the First Annual Famous Monsters Halloween Film Festival.
“In the mid to late sixties Forry’s Ackermansion was the hub for (all five) stop motion animators, especially when Ray Harryhausen came to town. We’d meet for 8mm (not super 8 ) film-fests and gawk at the terrific collection of artifacts from Kong, Mighty Joe Young, props and models from Ray H’s work. It was pig heaven. Forry kept me going in the lean days by commissioning me to sculpt & fabricate creatures from covers of Sci-fi magazines from the 30’s and effigies from H.P. Lovecraft tales. On one occasion I was delivering a plaster sculpture of Cthulhu and took a turn to hard just as I was pulling into the driveway. Cthulhu went over and smashed to bits. Forry looked over the ruins with that bemused detached smile and paid me anyway. I was able to eat...

Marc Lougee, creator of the award-winning stop-motion short The Pit And The Pendulum, let us know that a handful of preview pages of the comic-book adaptation we first reported on here have gone on-line. This four-color interpretation hits stores next Wednesday, February 25 from Bluewater Productions.
The art can be seen at the official DVD website for Lougee’s short, which is presented by dimensional animation legend Ray Harryhausen and adapts Poe’s famous story of physical and psychological torment during the Spanish Inquisition. Bluewater’s comic combines images derived directly from the minimovie with the author’s original text. You can find out more about The Pit And The Pendulum here.

In an example of two fates running concurrently to one another and finally meeting at the opportune time, both Darren G. Davis of Bluewater Productions and Marc Lougee of Handmade Heores realized they were working on projects under the Ray Harryhausen Presents banner, and immediately decided to join forces. The result is a comic book version of Lougee’s award-wining stop-motion animation short, “The Pit and the Pendulum” (review).
“Seeing the film published as a comic thru a brilliant publisher like Bluewater is the realization of another dream of mine.” Lougee said in a press release, “What started as a labor of love, and a once in a lifetime chance to make a film with Ray Harryhausen at the helm, has just continued to expand and reach further than I’d imagined. I’m really excited to have an issue of Ray Harryhausen Presents; The Pit and the Pendulum comic...

I will readily admit I've never read the Edgar Allan Poe short story of the same name that this is based on (at least that I can remember), but regardless, a quick glance at wikipedia will give you a rundown, cliff notes style. The big draw on this short, which clocks in at 7 minutes, is that visual effects legend Ray Harryhausen was one of the executive producers on it, and it shows. It's stop motion claymation at it's finest.
Peter Cugno provides the narration which starts with our prisoner's short trial, the judges words being unclear. Then thrown into a locked cell, an iron bucket shackled to his head. Clearly the story revolves around the large pit in the center of the room, and the pendulum swinging closer and closer to his supine,...
