It’s an unlikely trio, but Cass (Gabrielle Dennis), Hana (Ally Maki), and Nat (Mary Holland) are so much fun in The Big Door Prize Season 2, and no more so than in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the May 8 episode. In “Night Under the Stars,” the three have a night out at the casino and adopt new personas for the occasion—or rather, some of them do, at least. I mean, I have so many baby girls. In fact, I can’t even keep track. I’ve got a baby girl in every port.” Hana tells her, “I...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Big Door Prize Season 2 Episodes 1 “The Next Stage,” 2 “Visions,” and 3 “Power & Energy.”] Apple TV+‘s heartwarming and entertaining dramedy The Big Door Prize returns for its second season in a major way: The three episodes that drop on premiere day feature a proposal, a (temporary?) split, the next stage of the Morpho machine, and a hug that will have people talking. Hana (Ally Maki), who had worked at a bar with a Morpho machine previously, reveals she started getting the blue dots that some have and doesn’t know what causes them. It’s not much, but it’s still more than Hana has opened up thus far, and Episode 3 even shows her bonding a bit with Cass (Gabrielle Dennis). But what also makes Hana stand apart from the others is that she never used the Morpho machine. Is that something she regrets? “I think Hana’s just a...

Cult college football series Blue Mountain State is making a comeback. A sequel to the 2010 comedy recently hit the TV marketplace, with Reacher’s Alan Ritchson set to reprise his role as Kevin “Thad” Castle. The original series’ co-leads Darin Brooks and Chris Romano also are expected to be back for the followup, from Lionsgate Television.
According to sources, the project has not fully landed yet with negotiations ongoing. The likely destinations are said to be Amazon, where Ritchson headlines hit series Reacher, and Netflix, where Blue Mountain State found new audience and cemented its cult status following its original three-season run on Spike.

Exclusive: Netflix has picked up another installment of its popular multi-camera comedy series The Upshaws. The blue-collar sitcom created by Regina Hicks and Wanda Sykes has been renewed for a 10-episode fourth season.
After the 10-episode first season, Seasons 2 and 3 of The Upshaws have been released in two parts — of eight and six episodes each, respectively — so the renewal is for Part 6 of the series, as officially referred to by Netflix.
Production on the 10-episode new season, which will be released in one batch, will begin next year. The six-episode Part 5 of The Upshaws (second half of Season 3), is slated to premiere in spring 2024.
Somewhat flying under the radar, The Upshaws has been a sturdy performer for Netflix in a genre — multi-camera sitcom — that has been challenging for streamers. With the renewal, The Upshaws is tying The Ranch as the second-longest-running original multi-camera comedy on Netflix in number of seasons,...

How does one edit “A Black LadySketch Show” when comedic talent such as Issa Rae, Gabrielle Dennis and Robin Thede have gone off-script? “It’s a challenge because everyone is giving you something hilarious,” editor Stephanie Filo says.
Filo is no slouch herself. This year, she achieved something remarkable, landing three Emmy nominations for her editing work on HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” and Hulu’s “History of the World, Part II.”
On “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” Filo relished the chance to edit a Coral Reefs gang sequence on the “WeMurk” sketch featuring Rae, Thede and Dennis . “I didn’t get to cut the other iterations, so I got to have a swing at it,” Filo says. This time, Tracee Ellis Ross, who she describes as “hysterical,” was also in the sketch.

Gabrielle Dennis cannot stop laughing. In HBO’s Emmy-winning sketch comedy series A Black Lady Sketch Show, Dennis plays more than a dozen characters to represent the Black female experience through absurdist humor. In Apple TV+ sci-fi dramedy The Big Door Prize, she stars as Cass — the wife of Chris O’Dowd’s Dusty and mom to their daughter (Djouliet Amara) — a homemaker looking for a sense of purpose in unique ways outside of her small-town life. It’s late March and “A Black Lady Sketch Show” creator and star Robin Thede is working with the show’s editors to put the finishing touches on Season 4 of the half-hour HBO comedy.
“First season,” she tells Variety, “I was like, I want every third line to be a joke. Second season, every other line. Now, literally every line is a joke, even the setups to the punchlines. It’s crazy.”
With sketches that riff on relatable themes — like hair woes, ashy skin and the politics of the Black church — “A Black Lady Sketch Show” frames the world from a Black woman’s point of view. Even when the subject matter has nothing to do with Blackness, the show’s existence is impactful, a sentiment Whoopi Goldberg underlined during a recent episode of “The View.”

Robin Thede is showing no signs of slowing down the rich expansion of the magical reality found in “A Black Lady Sketch Show.”
Picking up from the Season 3 finale, which revealed that Dr. Haddassah had been secretly mind-controlling the women, Season 4 embraces the twist to “constantly reinvent” reality as the comedian and show star and creator introduces characters from prior seasons to one another and disparate storylines intertwine.
“My life and my world are constantly reinventing. It’s time to break out the good hair and sip on some celebratory champagne because HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show has returned for its fourth season tonight. Keeping in theme with the series’ previous seasons, creator and star Robin Thede, alongside her mainstay cast members Gabrielle Dennis and Skye Townsend, continues to highlight the niche inner workings of the Black American community through absurdist humor and topical commentary. Season 4 ushers in three series newcomers, TikTok personality DaMya Gurley, The Voice star Tamara Jade, actress Angel Laketa Moore along with a special bevy of guest stars including Jackée Harry, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Colman Domingo, who suffers a hilariously awkward interview with fan-favorite character Dr. Hadassah Olayinka Ali-Youngman Pre-PhD.
Here, Thede spoke to Deadline about the importance of creating Black female comedy, collaborating with her new cast and guest stars, and how she manages to maintain the funny.

Robin Thede designed A Black Lady Sketch Show to have no end. “That is my original vision for the show,” she tells TV Insider ahead of the April 14 Season 4 premiere on HBO, “that the show can be an institution and a launching platform for so many talented Black women to come through and to be able to show the world everything they’ve got.” That talent is on full display in A Black Lady Sketch Show Season 4, which features returning stars Thede, Gabrielle Dennis, and Skye Townsend. This is the first season without star Ashley Nicole Black, but three new cast members — DaMya Gurley, Tamara Jade, and Angel Laketa Moore — join the hilarious crew in her stead. Thede serves as an executive producer, showrunner, and writer in addition to being a star and creator. “Teamwork is the key” to keeping the magic flowing in their writers’ room and beyond. “I’m constantly moving.
