Exclusive: Josh Swindell, a former pro skater who is set to be the central subject of a forthcoming skating biopic from MindRiot Entertainment, has signed with The Bks Agency in London.
The agency will handle Swindell’s literary representation and they are currently out to publishers with Swindell’s memoir, which is the basis of MindRiot’s biopic.
Swindell was one of the most celebrated pro skaters of his generation and had been regarded as the future of the sport by grandees such as Christian Hosoi, Tony Hawk, and Steve Caballero. He also crossed over into motocross and is still sponsored by Vans. In October 1995, however, Swindell was convicted of second-degree murder in the killing of Keith Ogden, whom he beat to death outside a bar in Azusa, California. He was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison and was released in 2012 after spending almost 20 years behind bars. The case...

Exclusive: ABC Signature has acquired The Redemption of Al Sharpton, the recent Esquire profile of the civil rights activist by Pulitzer Prize winner Mitchell S. Jackson, to develop as a limited series. The company’s Evi Regev also is executive producing the project, now in very early stages, along with Artists First’s E. Brian Dobbins (black-ish). Jackson is getting a producing credit.
For The Redemption of Al Sharpton, published in February, Jackson followed the politician & TV/radio personality around the country “to find out why he keeps going, what he’s still doing, and where his place in history will be.”
The profile looks to reconcile Sharpton’s image as “a beacon of the civil-rights movement” and as “a loudmouth in a tracksuit,...

It appears as though another killer is on the loose, now that a sequel to "The Blackening" is officially moving forward.
In a year that's seen many a high-profile box office bomb (and not just the big-budget variety either), director Tim Story's well-received slasher comedy is a testament to the power of thriftiness. While the film only made $18.5 million at the global box office, that was more than enough to cover its $5 million budget and then some. It's also further proof that no genre is consistently thriving in the post-2020 lockdowns era quite like horror, with "The Blackening" joining "M3GAN" and "Five Nights at Freddy's" as horror flicks that successfully launched shiny new film franchises in 2023.
According to Variety, "The Blackening" writers Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins -- who based their script on the short sketch of the same name by Perkins' comedy troupe 3Peat -- are now in...

When director Tim Story’s horror comedy The Blackening was released back in June, co-writer and star Dewayne Perkins told Variety that he envisioned the film being the start of a franchise, one that could bring back the “same group, sprinkle in some new people. I feel like we’ve got something good, and I love the dynamic, but fresh blood always turns things up a little bit.” Now Variety has confirmed that a sequel to The Blackening is officially in development!
The Blackening didn’t exactly set the box office of fire, earning just $18.5 million… but since the movie had a budget of $3 million (plus another $2 million for marketing), that’s enough for producer MRC and domestic distributor Lionsgate to feel that it’s worth going back to for a sequel. They’re developing the follow-up with Perkins, co-writer Tracy Oliver, and producer E. Brian Dobbins.

After scaring up $18 million in theaters earlier this year, horror-comedy The Blackening is getting a sequel from Lionsgate, Variety has exclusively announced this afternoon.
Variety notes, “producer MRC and domestic distributor Lionsgate have entered into talks with Dewayne Perkins, Tracy Oliver and producer E. Brian Dobbins to develop a follow-up film.”
The first film was made on a production budget of just $5 million, so there’s needless to say lots of potential for this to become a profitable Scary Movie-type horror franchise.
Stay tuned for more on The Blackening 2 as we learn it.
The Blackening, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherf****** game.

MRC and Lionsgate are developing a sequel to “The Blackening,” the hit horror-comedy from Dewayne Perkins and Tracy Oliver.
After the microbudget production (just $5 million) made more than $18 million at the box office, producer MRC and domestic distributor Lionsgate have entered into talks with Perkins, Oliver and producer E. Brian Dobbins to develop a follow-up film.
Directed by Tim Story and co-written by Perkins and Oliver, “The Blackening” follows a group of college friends who reunite for Juneteenth weekend and are hunted by a killer who asks them to determine who is the Blackest among them — lampooning the common horror movie trope that sees the Black character die first. Perkins initially conceived the story as a sketch for his comedy troupe 3Peat, which developed into a short for Comedy Central, before Oliver reached out to develop it into a feature.

The missing OceanGate Titan submersible tragedy from earlier this year is being made into a movie.
MindRiot Entertainment and producer E. Brian Dobbins are making a movie about the OceanGate incident. Dobbins will co-produce and MindRiot’s Justin MacGregor and Jonathan Keasey will write the film.
The Titan submersible caught the world’s attention in June 2023 after it went missing during a deep sea underwater excursion near the wreckage of the Titanic in the Atlantic Ocean. The submersible lost contact with its mother ship 1 hour and 45 minutes into the dive, and the five-man crew was feared dead as the oxygen supply was dwindling in the high-pressure conditions. Four days after the sub went missing, a remotely operated underwater vehicle discovered debris near the Titanic wreck, and the Titan submersible was believed to have imploded.

Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow are Los Angeles streetball hustlers in the official trailer for Hulu’s remake of White Men Can’t Jump.
Walls (Friday Night Lights) and rapper Harlow — making his film debut — take over the roles played by Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, respectively, in the 1992 hit comedy by writer-director Ron Shelton.
The trailer is full of the on-court trash-talk that the original machine-gunned so deftly, with Harlow being referred to as “a yoga teacher” who is allowed to enter the gym and told he’s dressed like “a white girl at Whole Foods” and “wearing a fake-ass Richard Simmons outfit,” among other slams.

After conquering primetime, Anthony Anderson and Cedric the Entertainer have their sights on prime beef. The actors are partnering to launch their own barbecue label, AC Barbeque, and will document their quest to perfect the skill of the grill via the new A&e Network series “Kings of BBQ.”
The series, which is still being developed under that working title, will follow the pals as they travel the country looking for advice and techniques from barbeque experts. A&e announced the greenlight of the 10-episode unscripted series on Wednesday as part of a flurry of news tied to its upfront meetings with advertisers.
“Anthony and I are very excited to take our audience into the savory, smokehouse-filled, finger licking world of barbeque all across the United States,” Cedric The Entertainer said in a statement. Added Anderson: ““The launch of AC Barbeque has been a lifelong dream for Cedric and I and we...

Anthony Anderson is headed back to ABC.
The former Black-ish star will topline and be an executive producer of the network’s comedy pilot Public Defenders, from 20th Television and Wonderland Sound and Vision. His casting comes less than a year after Black-ish concluded its eight-season run, which netted Anderson six Emmy nominations for lead actor in a comedy series.
Additionally, Public Defenders, created by Eddie Quintana, has tapped Liz Astrof as showrunner and Randall Einhorn as director. Both will also serve as executive producers along with Quintana (Acapulco), Anderson, E. Brian Dobbins, and Wonderland Sound and Vision’s McG, Mary Viola and Corey Marsh.
Public Defenders will follow four young public defense lawyers, “up to their earholes in student debt,” who work to keep their clients out of jail. “Along the way, they have to rely on each other to navigate their first defendants, the absurd court system and...

“Scream VI” isn’t the only meta-horror comedy coming soon to theaters.
With the tongue-in-cheek tagline of “They all can’t die first,” the all-Black ensemble cast of “The Blackening” sets out to survive a surprisingly deadly Juneteenth weekend trip to a cabin in the woods. A twisted killer seemingly unleashed from an ancient board game forces the friend group to play by his rules while they are picked off one by one.
“The Blackening” stars Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg, X Mayo, Dewayne Perkins, Antoinette Robertson, Sinqua Walls, Jay Pharoah, and Yvonne Orji. Tim Story directs the dark comedy slasher from a screenplay by “Girls Trip” scribe Tracy Oliver and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” writer Dewayne Perkins. The film is based on a 3-peat Comedy’s 2018 Comedy Central digital short of the same name.
