Zoe Lister-Jones was proud to attend Sunday’s Spirit Awards, and the reason is twofold. First, the multihyphenate talent turned up in Santa Monica to support a pair of nominations for Roku’s Slip, the original series she created, starred in and executive produced alongside a team that includes Dakota Johnson. Reason No. 2: She did so by walking into the event hand-in-hand with a new love in her life.
When the subject of her plus-one came up during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 41-year-old Lister-Jones responded with a big reveal: “I’m here, I’m queer, I have some fear but I’m working through it.” Lister-Jones is in a new relationship with a fellow filmmaker, Sammi Cohen, who most recently directed Netflix’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, the teen comedy starring Adam Sandler and family including wife Jackie and their daughters Sadie and Sunny.

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

Ali Wong won the award for best performance in a new scripted series at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards for her role in Netflix’s Beef, which also won the prize for best new scripted series.
While accepting her first-ever Spirit Award, Wong thanked her co-star Steven Yeun, who was also nominated in the gender-neutral category, as well as the series’ creator Lee Sung Jin and executive producer Jake Schreier. “I wouldn’t be here without you. This is the best. It’s been such a wonderful journey with you guys, and I’m so proud that you guys are my friends, too,” she said.

Following a turbulent year marked by dueling industry strikes and the violent contraction–if not yet full pop–of the streaming bubble, 2024 has thus far been pretty good to Hollywood. It certainly helps that we’re in the middle of awards season, which for cineastes amounts to a three-month holiday largely characterized by voluminous binge-watching. And not just binge-watching of the year’s top films. For the curious, the season also offers up a smuggler’s bounty full of talking special post-screening Q&As, roundtables, filmmaker panels, celebratory cocktail receptions and more.
Traditionally Film Independent’s Directors Close-Up series has been a little bit of all of the above, presenting behind-the-scenes insight into the year’s most important works of cinema, straight from the mouths and brains of filmmakers themselves. Goodbye, Christmas and New Year’s. Hello, awards season!
The Golden Globes are upon us, and that means the festivities kick off with W Magazine’s annual Friday night soiree toasting its Best Performances Issue. Expect to see well-heeled, A-List celebrities mix and mingle elbow-to-elbow in the penthouse suite of the Chateau Marmont.
That same evening, Jon Hamm, Willem Dafoe and Wilmer Valderrama will be among the celebs at the Golden Globes Foundation Dinner helping to present $5 million in grant awards to 96 non-profits.
In the past, studios and networks threw lavish affairs in separate ballrooms at the Beverly Hilton immediately following the Globes, but things have slowed down in recent years due to the Covid pandemic and controversies that rocked the HFPA. Instead, there are smaller affairs being thrown at venues throughout Los Angeles in the nights leading up to the Globes and immediately following the big show.

“American Fiction,” “May December” and “Past Lives” dominated the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards nominations on Tuesday, picking up five nods apiece. The three movies are all up for best feature, where they will battle it out against “All of Us Strangers,” “Passages” and “We Grown Now.”
The annual honors recognize the best of television, as well as film. “The Last of Us,” a sci-fi epic that was a ratings hit for HBO, and “I’m a Virgo,” an absurdist miniseries from Boots Riley that was produced by Amazon, led the small screen crop, with four nominations each. Only new TV shows that have run for one season and were released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of this year are eligible for awards. That’s why some big-budgeted fare was deemed eligible or, in the parlance of the show, independent.

We’ve seen multiple streaming companies remove titles from their service over the last year in a bid to save money, and Deadline has reported that Roku has joined them. The outlet reports that Roku has begun removing a handful of titles from their service, including Most Dangerous Game starring Christoph Waltz.
Most Dangerous Game began life as a Quibi Original (remember that mess?) before it was salvaged by Roku, who renewed the series for a second season. After learning that he will soon die from a terminal illness and desperate to provide for his pregnant wife, Dodge Maynard (Liam Hemsworth) accepts an invitation from a mysterious man (Christoph Waltz) to participate in a deadly game of survival. Each hour Dodge survives will earn him more money, for a total of $24.5 million if he survives the full 24 hours.

It is the latest streamer to remove titles from its service following similar moves by Paramount+, Disney+, Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max and AMC Networks.
Roku revealed yesterday that it was set to remove some content as part of a cost-cutting drive that also saw around 300 employees laid off. The company will, however, continue to order original series and sources note that this process is part of its regular review of programming.
Action thriller Most Dangerous Game was originally a Quibi original with the first season starring Liam Hemsworth alongside Waltz. The first season earned two Emmy nominations and it was renewed...

Chris Noth, the actor best known for playing Mr. Big in “Sex and the City” and “And Just Like That,” has denied the sexual misconduct allegations against him in his first interview since the scandal broke.
“I’m not going to lay down and just say it’s over,” Noth told USA Today in an interview about the clothing brand Samuelsohn. “It’s a salacious story, but it’s just not a true one.”
Noth admitted that he “strayed on my wife,” which he called, “not a very pretty picture.” “What it isn’t is a crime,” Noth said.
In December 2021, shortly after the premiere of “And Just Like That,” two women accused Noth of sexually assaulting them, one in Los Angeles in 2005 and the other in New York in 2015. These allegations opened the door for more accusations of misconduct. Screenwriter Zoe Lister-Jones said Noth was “consistently sexually inappropriate” while...

Sometimes the best way for a performer to gain screen time is to write their own material — and there are dozens of multihyphenates who have balanced writing and acting duties on their respective series this season. That’s particularly true in comedy, a genre that sees many series led by performers who mine their own lives for onscreen laughs. (See, for example, HBO Max’s Bridget Everett-led Somebody Somewhere, Peacock’s Pete Davidson vehicle Bupkis and Netflix’s Mo, co-created by and starring Mo Amer.)
But running a show is also a great way for an actor to branch out into the directing field. This season, these five actor-writers also helmed episodes of their Emmy-contending shows.

Beau Is Afraid is the third film from writer-director Ari Aster, following his devastating one-two punch of Hereditary and Midsommar. As such, it’s certain to confound expectations, a surreal odyssey that comes across more like a Charlie Kaufman movie rather than a straight-up horror, though it’s frequently unsettling and has some truly unforgettable moments.
Joaquin Phoenix plays Beau Wassermann, an anxiety-ridden paranoiac who lives in an urban hellscape, where all manner of atrocities unfold on his doorstep at any given moment. When he’s guilted into visiting his mother, Mona (Patti LuPone) on the anniversary of his father’s death, Beau stumbles from one disaster to another, as he misses his flight and...

This article contains Wild Beau Is Afraid spoilers.
When we chatted with actor Nathan Lane about Beau Is Afraid a few weeks ago, the stage and screen legend confided to us an undeniable truth: “Only Ari and his therapist could tell you exactly what [the movie’s] about.”
While Lane did not divulge which scene he was most explicitly referring to, we imagine the sequence where the titular, cowardly Beau (Joaquin Phoenix) confronts a 12-foot tall penis monster with fangs and a grumpy disposition in an attic was at the top of the list.
For those who need a refresher (or just a basic understanding) of how that weirdness went down, the moment occurs after Beau at last confronts his mother (Patty LuPone) about a lifetime of neuroses and anxieties that he blames on her. Given the character is pushing 50, LuPone’s Mona is not remiss in suggesting her son take a little goddamn self-responsibility for his foibles.

Roku pared down its operating losses in the first quarter of 2023 to $212.5 million, after several quarters of growing losses.
This is an improvement from its Q4 operating losses of $249.9 million, and comes after Roku had set out a plan to tighten expenses moving forward, with a plan to reach positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in 2024.
Total active accounts inched up to 71.6 million from 70 million in the previous quarter. Streaming hours reached 25.1 billion, up 4.2 billion hours or 20 percent year-over-year, and above the 23.9 billion in the previous quarter.
Roku reported total net revenue of $741 million, above their guidance of $700 million and net income loss of $193.6 million, compared to their guidance of a loss of $205 million.
As part of its plan to tighten expenses, and amid a difficult ad environment, at the end of March, Roku announced it would cut another 200 jobs, or about 6 percent of its workforce, after...

The thesis for Ari Aster's tragicomic nightmare "Beau Is Afraid" is stated pretty plainly up front. Beau (Joaquin Phoenix) visits his therapist (Stephen McKinley Henderson) to talk about his anxieties, particularly how they stem from his mother. The unnamed therapist asks point blank: "Do you ever wish she was dead?" Beau shifts uncomfortably. He is prescribed a mysterious medicine and sent on his way. On the way back to his apartment, the audience sees the hell that Beau lives in. There are dead bodies in the street that no one has bothered to move in weeks. There are violent fights and fatal stabbings in broad daylight. Beau has to run through the chaos at top speed to avoid being apprehended by a black-eyed tattoo punk who clearly wants to do him harm. Once safely locked inside his vandalized, decrepit building, Beau can finally rest inside his squalid hole of misery.

Time travel stories, if constructed well, always end up being interesting to watch. “About Time” and the “Back to the Future” trilogy are some of the examples of films that explored the time travel genre exceedingly well because the story allowed the viewers to be engaged in it. Just a few weeks ago, Netflix Turkey released “Oh Belinda,” a time travel comedy film that kind of explored the idea of the lead of the film traveling into another dimension. The Roku Channel now brings you “Slip,” created and starred in by Zoe Lister-Jones, which tells the tale of a woman who keeps going into different dimensions as the same person and experiences a different life story. Will she be able to come back to her reality, or will she be forever stuck in this time loop?

This piece contains spoilers for "Beau is Afraid."
There is a lot to take in with "Beau is Afraid," perhaps the strangest studio movie to get a nationwide theatrical release in a bit. Sure, that sounds a little hyperbolic, but given the current theatrical outlook full of superhero schlock and sequels, it almost feels like a miracle that we're getting Ari Aster's weird three-hour dramedy on the biggest screens possible. It also seems really fitting that "Beau is Afraid" has become his most widely-marketed film, as it seemingly completes his transition from a promising indie director to one of the few true auteurs of his age.
This transition has been filled with its ups and its downs, something that "Beau is AFraid" seemingly acknowledges within its grand story. Perhaps the most significant mark against Aster's creative career was a particular motif from his first two films, "Hereditary" and "Midsommar,...
