Exclusive: Global TV and film studio Sister is gearing up for a string of projects to hit the small and big screens and today might well see the launch of its most daring.
Netflix’s Eric about a desperate father battling his own demons on the streets of 1980s New York as he searches for his missing nine-year-old son features Benedict Cumberbatch and a custom-made seven foot puppet, which is visible only to Cumberbatch’s character, the flawed Vincent. Abi Morgan’s six-part series ties together themes of belonging, addiction, loss and police brutality in a familiar setting. It was described as Sesame Street meets Taxi Driver by one British reviewer, although Featherstone compared it in scope and theme to Steven Spielberg’s Et.
Speaking exclusively to Deadline, Featherstone said the show is testament to the Chernobyl and This is Going to Hurt studio’s commitment to taking a talent-first approach.

The Netflix streaming service has a new film chief in Dan Lin – and one of the first projects Lin has greenlit at the streamer is an adaptation of author Ruth Ware’s bestselling 2016 thriller novel The Woman in Cabin 10, which has Keira Knightley attached to star in it as the titular woman! Simon Stone, who previously directed The Dig for Netflix, will be directing the film from a screenplay by Snake Eyes writers Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse (with Stone handling script revisions himself).
Knightley will be playing a travel journalist assigned to cover the launch of a luxury yacht. When she witnesses a passenger tossed overboard in the dead of night, no one believes her story as all on the ship have been accounted for. Doggedly she searches for answers, putting her own life in danger as the boat barrels through the desolate North Sea.

Netflix’s former vp original content Cindy Holland says the cancellation of The Oa was a harbinger of a “broken business model.”
Holland, who worked at the streamer for nearly two decades and oversaw its move into in-house content production, shared her thoughts on how the industry has been disrupted over the last decade while speaking to The New York Times for a story about The Oa creators’ new series at FX, Murder at the End of the World.
Holland had praise for creative duo Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, whose two-season Netflix show ceneterd on the inexplicable reappearance of a blind woman, Prairie Johnson (Marling), after she went missing seven years earlier and has now returned in her late 20s with her sight. The show was canceled in 2019, garnering a passionate fan response to save the show, including one fan who went on a hunger strike.

Exclusive: Jane Featherstone and Liz Murdoch’s Sister saw revenues skyrocket by $100M last year, although the This is Going to Hurt and Chernobyl producer failed again to turn a profit.
The transatlantic outfit’s turnover grew by a mammoth 273% to $134M for full-year 2022, according to a Companies House filing seen by Deadline, as the outfit shook off the shackles of the Covid-19 pandemic and delivered a number of high-profile projects. The vast majority of the revenue came from TV shows.
Sister’s filing pointed to “the realisation of a pipeline of projects and recovery from the delays to the production schedule of programmes caused by the Covid-19 pandemic” as a driver of revenue growth. Big shows delivered in the year included BAFTA-winning BBC drama This is Going to Hurt, The Split Season 3 and HBO/Sky’s The Baby.

Former Netflix TV boss Cindy Holland has joined Elisabeth Murdoch and Jane Featherstone’s Sister as Global CEO.
Holland, who spent nearly two decades at Netflix, replaces Stacey Snider, who departed earlier this year.
Sister Co-Founder Murdoch called Holland a “transformational leader in the industry for many years” and said she is the “total package.”
During her Netflix tenure, including nine years as VP Original Content, Holland oversaw the likes of House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and Bojack Horseman. Sister launched several years ago and has gone from strength to strength, with Holland the UK-headquartered company’s biggest hire so far following the loss of Snider.

Since 2020, television programming at Netflix has primarily been led by Bela Bajaria, who joined the streamer in 2016 and rose quickly through the company from her initial post as head of unscripted and international content. In the time she’s been at the helm, the company has had its stumbles but has also produced immensely successful series like “Squid Game” and “Wednesday.”
So what’s her method to success? According to a profile in The New Yorker, it’s making shows like “gourmet cheeseburgers.”
The profile, written by staff writer Rachel Syme, chronicled a year in Bajaria’s life as the executive traveled the world, meeting with Netflix’s development teams across multiple countries. In the profile, Bajaria explained that her ideal Netflix series is both “premium and commercial at the same time,” such as “Bridgerton,” which her vice president Jinny Howe refers to as “gourmet cheeseburgers.” The profile sees Bajaria,...

Netflix Head of Global TV Bela Bajaria has stressed a “back to basics” response to the tricky past few months, as she questions “Are we the underdog now?” and says “this is a good place to be.”
Delivering a keynote at Banff, Bajaria shrugged off the need for a “radical change in our business” given a rocky period of lower-than-expected subscriber growth that has led to questions around the streamer’s model.
“We’re not merging departments or having a big transitional phase or anything like that,” she said. “The way I look at it this is a noisy period and is all about getting back to basics. We are meeting writers, producers, directors, questioning whether we are going local and taking chances.”
Given the past few months, Bajaria questioned “Are we the underdogs now?” and said “That’s cool, that is a good place to be.”

Netflix Head of Global TV Bela Bajaria says she now feels like the underdog — and “that’s Ok. That’s cool, it’s a good place to be the underdog.” The streamer has been in the line of fire following the company’s major drop in valuation, leading to plenty of speculation about the future of Netflix and its content spend.
“This year, we’re expected to spend 17 billion on content, that hasn’t changed in that way,” Bajaria told an audience at the Banff World Media Festival. Speaking at the conference, Bajaria admitted that “it has been noisy for sure.”
Bajaria hesitated to say that Netflix would reduce that level of content spend, but she did say that “there’s been slower growth than we anticipated. We’re going to continue to grow content [but] because growth is slow, we sort of slowed also in parallel the growth of the content,...

Exclusive: Sirens, a rock doc about Beirut all-female thrash metal band Slave to Sirens, will get a theatrical run after Oscilloscope Laboratories bought the North American rights.
The company, which was founded by Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch, will give the film that premiered at Sundance in January an exclusive theatrical run before launching it on digital platforms.
Directed by Rita Baghdadi, who shot and produced the film along with producing partner Camila Hall, the film explores the lives and music of Slave to Sirens, a band made up of five young metalheads whose burgeoning fame is set against the backdrop of the Lebanese revolution.
Its members wrestle with friendship, sexuality, and destruction as their music serves as a refuge to Beirut’s youth culture. At the band’s core are its two founding members, Lilas Mayassi and Shery Bechara, whose complicated relationship and subsequent tense fallout threatens the very fabric of the band.

Julie Plec and Greg Berlanti’s “Girls on the Bus” has finally found a home. HBO Max has ordered the show straight to series, the streamer announced Thursday.
Plec and New York Times journalist Amy Chozick are still on board as writers and executive producers.
The comedic character-driven drama is directly inspired by a chapter of the same name in Chozick’s memoir “Chasing Hillary,” though it is not about Clinton nor the 2016 election. Instead, it chronicles four female journalists who follow every move of a parade of flawed presidential candidates, while finding friendship, love and scandal along the way.
This marks the second time “Girls on the Bus” has moved while in development. The project had been picked up at Netflix prior to the pandemic under the oversight of the streamer’s previous originals boss Cindy Holland. Last year, The CW picked up the show with plans to redevelop it for broadcast.

Female directors hit another milestone tonight when The Crown‘s Jessica Hobbs won Outstanding Directing For a Drama Series and Hacks‘ Lucia Aniello Won Outstanding Directing For a Comedy Series, respectively. This marks the first time women have swept both directing categories in the same year.
Hobbs being recognized for directing the Season 4 finale of Netflix’s The Crown, marks only the fourth time in 67 years that the Emmy Award in the Outstanding Directing For a Drama Series category has been won by a woman.
The rarity of the occasion was not lost on Hobbs, who also was nominated in the category for The Crown last year

The TV development logjam that emerged across broadcast, cable and streaming last year as the pandemic raged is showing little sign of abating as Covid-19 restrictions lift.
Multiple TV writers and lit agents tell Variety that the market is incredibly challenging, with little appetite from buyers for new projects.
Among the factors contributing to the situation is the number of projects bought up last year for development. As Covid-19 prevented most physical production, companies began snapping up projects to develop in the interim. This led to a glut that brought on a slowdown of buying in the latter half of 2020.

Among the factors contributing to the situation is the number of projects bought up last year for development. As Covid-19 prevented most physical production, companies began snapping up projects to develop in the interim. This led to a glut that brought on a slowdown of buying in the latter half of 2020.

Livestreaming tech group Genvid Technologies has raised $113 million in a Series C funding round to create an entertainment subsidiary focused on interactive live events.
New investors include Third Point Ventures, Cobalt Capital, LightShed Ventures (of media analyst Rich Greenfield et al), Xn, and Lux Capital and the company said that former longtime Netflix executive Cindy Holland has joined in an advisory role to assist with content strategy and acquisition.
Holland, previously Netflix VP Original Content, founded and ran the original series and documentary initiatives for the streamer.
Genvid Entertainment will be dedicated to producing so-called “massive interactive live events” or MILEs, following the success of the Genvid-enabled Facebook exclusive Rival Peak. The new arm will produce and publish MILEs via licensing major IP beginning later this year. Rival Peak was a popular Facebook Watch program where AI-driven contestants live in fictional Rival Peak, a mountainous forest region that emulates the Pacific Northwest.

The Crown is bringing another pivotal figure in British history to life during its fifth season.
Netflix announced Friday that Jonny Lee Miller had landed the role of Prime Minister John Major.
Major served as prime minister and leader of the UK’s Conservative party from 1990 to 1997 after serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Foreign Secretary under Margaret Thatcher from 1987 to 1990.
As has been the case with The Crown, the series is, once again, revamping its cast, which it does every two seasons.
Miller joins an ensemble that will include Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce (Game of Thrones) as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) as Princess Margaret, and Elizabeth Debicki (The Night Manager) as Princess Diana.
Dominic West (The Affair) has also reportedly been cast as Prince Charles, but casting has yet to be confirmed.

After a lengthy search for a No.2 in the U.S., Netflix’s head of Global Television Bela Bajaria has reached within the company ranks. Peter Friedlander, who has been heading up the company’s new Spectacle/Event programming department, has been named Head of Ucan Scripted Series. Brian Wright, who has been heading its Overall Deals department, will exit.
In addition to having the drama and comedy teams, led by Jinny Howe & Renate Radford (drama) and Tracey Pakosta (comedy), report to him, Friedlander will also continue to oversee the Spectacle/Event programming department and will now also run the Overall Deals department.
A month after Bajaria took over as VP, Global TV last September, a move that led to the departure of long-time exec Cindy Holland, she restructured its U.S. programming team, leaving the head of U.S. series post vacant.

Netflix head of global TV Bela Bajaria has picked her head of U.S./Canada scripted series, promoting longtime creative exec Peter Friedlander to the role.
Brian Wright, Netflix’s head of overall deals who had overseen shows including “Stranger Things,” is leaving the company. Friedlander, most recently head of spectacle and event TV programming, is assuming oversight of the company’s partnerships with creative talent. That’s in addition to Friedlander’s duties leading Netflix’s U.S. comedy and drama teams and continuing to head the big-budget spectacle/event TV group.
Friedlander is one of Netflix’s longest-tenured creative execs after joining the company in October 2011. He was the first dedicated employee on the company’s original series team, starting with “House of Cards” and “Orange Is the New Black.”
Friedlander was the creative executive responsible for shepherding some of Netflix’s highest-profile series including “Black Mirror,” “Mindhunter,...

Netflix is expanding Peter Friedlander’s purview, naming him head of Ucan (that’s U.S. and Canada) scripted series.
As part of the move, Brian Wright, who oversaw the streaming service’s expansive overall deals, will exit the company. Friedlander will assume oversight of Wright’s team.
Friedlander has been with Netflix since 2011 and was most recently head of spectacle/event TV, which came as part of the reorganization under new global TV chief Bela Bajaria. Netflix had not had an executive in charge of U.S. originals since Cindy Holland left last year.
Prior to Netflix, Friedlander was an executive at Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone production company for more than eight years, serving as a producer on HBO’s “Big Love” and an executive on many of their feature films.
