DC Comics is at it again, and this time they’re going bananas with a unique twist. March 2024 is going to be more exciting than ever with the release of DC’s ‘Ape-ril Special’. Yes, you read that right! DC is celebrating our closest animal relatives in an all-ape extravaganza, perfectly timed just before Ape-ril Fools Day.
The special comic book, packed with 48 pages of adventure, is set to hit the shelves on March 19th. It’s an invitation to join in on an ape-ic journey, a nod to DC’s rich history with these fascinating creatures. But there’s more! Along with the main cover by Dan Mora, DC is also releasing a ‘Banana Scent’ variant cover by Hayden Sherman and another variant by Bernard Chang. Imagine that – a comic book that smells like bananas!
The story is all about filling the void left by Gorilla Grodd’s absence.

The Silver Coin #14 Written by Pornsak Pichetshote | Art by Michael Walsh
2020 was a bad year. Whilst the world struggles with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Darren and Lauren’s relationship is breaking down. The pandemic has scuppered Lauren’s film work and Darren’s scriptwriting career is stalling, arguments are commonplace and Darren becomes increasingly jealous of Lauren’s relationship with her friend Colton.
Interspersed with their domestic troubles, Darren has horrific visions of Colton torturing Lauren. The demonic Puritan also makes an appearance to see if Darren is the one he is seeking. But as Darren fights back against them, a little silver coin makes an appearance in a monumental ending!

Next month, writers Tom King and Phil Hester are teaming up to bring back one of Gotham City’s oldest protectors. No, not Batman. Heck, I’m not even talking about the original Green Lantern and his cabbie sidekick Doiby Dickles.
I mean Slam Bradley, the hard-drinking, hard-talking Pi. Originally a lead character in Detective Comics, Bradley has been a mainstay in Batman’s orbit since the ’30s, and has even headlined several series. He’ll get that chance again as King and Hester make him the lead in Gotham City: Year One.
Working alongside illustrator Eric Gapstur, colorist Jordie Bellaire, and letterer Clayton Cowles, King and Hester tell the origin story of DC’s famously crime-riddled city. At the center of this tale is Bradley, who is on the case of Helen Wayne, a Gotham City heiress who goes missing. Bradley’s investigation will uncover deep corners of rot within the city,...

Now that comic books have been around as long as they have, and we are coming up to the one hundredth year anniversary of the American comic book industry in the not too distant future, literally tens of thousands of characters have been created to date. Only a few have the legs to last the distance, and Green Arrow is one of the lucky few. Created way back in 1941, he was originally a Robin Hood take off on Batman. Rich, ArrowCar, Arrow Cave, kid sidekick, you get the picture. He had reasonable success back in the day but in more modern times he never really rose above second banana status, until Denny O’Neil and then Mike Grell gave him a more mature makeover and he really shone. Even so, popularity boosts have usually been temporary, and he always felt...

Reaction around the virtual office water cooler mid-pandemic when DC’s winter crossover, Endless Winter, was announced was guarded excitement, along with the occasional wry “Oh you mean March?” Turns out, it wasn’t that far off, according to co-writer Ron Marz.
“The fact that we’re doing this [online] instead of in person at the Javitz Center is part of it,” he said at DC’s Endless Winter panel at New York Comic Con replacement Metaverse. “We’re all feeling a sense of isolation.”
Endless Winter is a nine part crossover that runs through two bookend issues, three specials, and the regular issues of Flash, Aquaman, and Justice League in December. Marz (Green Lantern) and Andy Lanning (Legion Lost) are co-writing, with art on each chapter from Marco Santucci (Shazam) along with another artist on each individual book.

Wonder Woman has had quite the renaissance in recent years, and as one of the Big Three (with Superman and Batman) it is thoroughly deserved. You don’t get continually published since 1941 unless you have something that clicks with readers after all. She first appeared in All-Star Comics #8 in 1941, graduated to her own book with Sensation Comics #1 in 1942, and has never looked back since. She has gone through several’ fad’ phases down the years, such as the depowered white jump suit era (yikes), and has sometimes struggled with getting enough readers to pick up her book. Historically, though, having a female character they are trying to aim at girls but written by middle aged men, doesn’t really work, and also ends up alienating the male audience. Most self respecting teenage boys back in the day wouldn’t pick up...

Beyond the toys, eggnog and family time, a nostalgic part the Yuletide season for me are books about comics. When I was growing up, there were just a few : Batman from the 30s to the 70s, Les Daniels’ Comix, Stan Lee’s Origins of Marvel Comics. But boy, did they make an impression on me. Today there’s a plethora of spectacular books available. Here’s a few of the best ones for your gift list consideration:
Kirby & Lee: Stuf’ Said! : The Complex Genesis of the Marvel Universe
by John Morrow and Jon B. Cooke, Twomorrows
I really enjoyed A Marvelous Life: The Amazing Story Of Stan Lee by Danny Fingeroth. Somehow, Fingeroth seemed to thread the needle to deliver a fascinating book and thoroughly explores the myth versus the man.
But there’s two sides to every story, and that’s the approach that John Morrow took in this brilliant book,...

Steve Orlando's Martian Manhunter comic gets a thematic preview in DC's Nuclear Winter Special. Here's an exclusive first look...
DC has been having a lot of creative success with their seasonal specials. Usually they’re a way for fun one-off stories or quick-hit introductions for new talent. And periodically they use it as a way to seed ideas and themes for upcoming stories. That’s the case in DC's Nuclear Winter Special, where we get some stuff from relative newcomers like Amancay Nahuelpan or Dave Wielgosz (an editor on the Batman books who’s new to writing credits); unsurprisingly great work from Tom Taylor and Mairghread Scott; an Extremely Mark Russell framing sequence by perennial favorite Mark Russell; and a stealth intro to one of 2019’s most anticipated comics - a holiday get together between Superman One Million and Martian Manhunter from penciller Brad Walker and writer Steve Orlando,...

Jeff Lemire's Sweet Tooth will be adapted for TV by Hulu and Robert Downey Jr.'s production company.
Jeff Lemire's weird, post-apocalyptic coming of age comic Sweet Tooth is coming to television. Sorta. I don't know, is Hulu tv?
Etymological questions aside, the comic series just received a pilot order from Hulu. According to Deadline, Sweet Tooth is being produced by Robert Downey, Jr.'s production company in conjunction with Warner Brothers and Jim Mickle, who brought Joe Lansdale's Hap and Leonard to the screen (which we miss terribly).
The story follows Gus, a 9 year old half boy half deer, as he ventures out into the world following an unknown apocalypse. Gus has been raised by a deeply religious survivalist father. He eventually falls in with a group of humans and hybrids and heads out on a quest that reveals some interesting information about the world they inhabit.

With the Dark Knight having existed for nearly eight decades, it comes as no surprise there have been alternate takes on the character. From popular Elseworlds tales like Gotham by Gaslight to possible futures in which someone such as Damian Wayne takes up the mantle, there never seems to be any shortage of ways to explore the mythos. But one particular addition that has arguably risen above all others has to be that of Batman Beyond.
Swiftly following the cancellation of both The New Batman Adventures and Superman: The Animated Series came WB’s idea to center an animated show around a teenaged Batman. Now, in the wrong hands, this could have been a complete disaster. But thankfully, the genius minds of Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Alan Burnett were at the helm and we were treated to the adventures of Terry McGinnis, a young man living fifty years into...

In the past, we’ve talked at length about the great stuff DC’s been doing with their new Young Animal imprint. Basically, Gerard Way and company have taken characters and concepts readers are familiar with in outrageous new directions, creating a line of books that feel altogether different from what we’d normally get via DC proper, or even Vertigo.
To be honest, if I were to personally recommend any title from this initiative, it’d have to be that of Mother Panic. I say that because not only have I found it to be the most enjoyable, but also because it’s incredibly easy to pick up and inviting to the average reader.
Odds are that you’ve read a Batman comic or two at some point in your life, therefore there’s a fair chance you’ll feel right at home here. In a way, Gotham City is a universe unto itself,...

Moving Target: The History and Evolution of Green Arrow by Richard Gray. Sequart, $17.99 paperback; $6.99 Kindle edition
Way back when, Green Arrow was sort of the “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” of the superhero set. For a long time, fans could enjoy a new Green Arrow adventure just about every month, but he didn’t enjoy the headliner popularity of his hero pals like Batman or even Wonder Woman.
That’s all almost forgotten now. Today, so many fans enjoy this modern-day Robin Hood in comics, on TV and with licensed merchandise.
