Dita Von Teese is getting the documentary treatment.
Filming for a feature doc about the Queen of Burlesque is underway with director Tiffany Bartok (Larger Than Life: The Kevyn Aucoin Story) at the helm and a team that includes producers Jayce Bartok and Jesse Scolaro and executive producers Matthew Felker, Ryan Kampe and Stephen Fitzgibbon.
The plan is to cover her humble beginnings, born as Heather Sweet in West Branch, Michigan, to becoming pop culture’s most famous striptease artist. Von Teese is participating and will accompany filmmakers to her hometown where they will sit down with members of her family, many of whom will be seen for the first time. They’ll also have access to her inner circle, an entire archive of rare, never-before-seen footage as well and her upcoming Glamonatrix Tour.

Christopher Lloyd and Richard Kind will lead Tankhouse, an ensemble comedy being directed by Noam Tomaschoff, who co-wrote the piece with Chelsea Frei. Tara Holt, Stephen Friedrich, Nadia Alexander, Joe Adler, Austin Crute, Luke Spencer Roberts, Devere Rogers, and Sarah Yarkin also star. Rounding out the cast are Andy Buckley, Joey Lauren Adams, Rachel Mattews, Alex Esola, and Carolyn Michelle Smith. Producers are Frei, Tomaschoff, and Mathew Cooper of Momentum Studios in collaboration with Forum Communications of Fargo, North Dakota. Production is currently underway with plans to film in both Fargo and Los Angeles.

Maria By Callas director Tom Volf at Bar Fiori in Langham Place on Cecil Beaton and Maria Callas: "They had photo shoots together. It's so interesting to notice all those people who were part of the same era." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
In the second half of my conversation with Tom Volf, the director of Maria By Callas and author of Maria By Callas: In Her Own Words, the two sides of the coin of Maria Callas were explored. Callas working on Pier Paolo Pasolini's Medea, why her favourite role is Norma, calling her toy poodles "my babies", Lisa Immordino Vreeland's Love, Cecil, Yorgos Lanthimos' The Favourite, and Kevyn Aucoin transforming Isabella Rossellini into Maria Callas as seen in Tiffany Bartok's Larger Than Life: The Kevyn Aucoin Story, all came up, taking us into a kind of time travel back to the golden age.

Tori Amos on Kevyn Aucoin, the famous makeup artist of the '80s and '90s: "Some of us were addicted to him making us beautiful and he was addicted to making us beautiful."
Tiffany Bartok's Larger Than Life: The Kevyn Aucoin Story, with remembrances from Paulina Porizkova, Kate Moss, Brooke Shields, Cher, Isabella Rossellini, Naomi Campbell, Tori Amos, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Isaac Mizrahi, Carol Alt, Cindy Crawford, Veronica Webb, and Linda Wells had its UK première at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
In our conversation at Lincoln Center the director discussed with me Kevyn Aucoin's need to share and that his favourite film was David Lynch's The Elephant Man. Isabella Rossellini's incarnation into becoming Maria Callas, comparing Kristin Scott Thomas's look in Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives to Charlize Theron's in Patty Jenkins' Monster, an Aucoin bullying interview with Dan Hunt,...

Tiffany Bartok at Lincoln Center on Kevyn Aucoin when he worked with performers that included Janet Jackson, Tina Turner, Celine Dion, and Whitney Houston: "Each person was reflected in him." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
In the first installment of my conversation with Tiffany Bartok, the director of Larger Than Life: The Kevyn Aucoin Story, we start out with her fascination for impostors, the recent deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, and how each person was reflected in Kevyn Aucoin and "when there was no one left, then he had to just look at himself."
Bartok's revelatory documentary on the famous make-up artist's life and legacy is alluringly illustrated through interviews with Brooke Shields, Cher, Tori Amos, Paulina Porizkova, Carol Alt, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Veronica Webb, Isaac Mizrahi, and the footage shot by Eric Sakas.

For an event that’s only in its 6th edition, the Louisiana International Film Festival (April 18–22) already seems to have dramatically changed the film landscape of the city of Baton Rouge and nearby towns. Fostering the development of a cinephile community and supporting local creators through its mentorship program, this regional outfit thrives thanks to its carefully selected slate and engaged audiences.
Program Director Ian Birnie, who was has been involved with Liff since its inception in 2013, has consistently assembled a selection of films comprised of accessible crowd-pleasers (this year with Streaker), unexpected foreign language gems (Double Lover), well-crafted American indies (American Animals), and Louisiana-made productions highlighting homegrown talent (Cut Off). Well-attended screenings, even for the more obscure titles, confirmed the notion that people are interested in watching what the fest has to offer beyond the galas and parties.
