1497 has revealed the finalists of its third annual Features Lab. See their bios below.
The lab is designed to elevate and develop screenplays by writers of South Asian descent, while providing career support. It aims to empower writers in the South Asian diaspora to write whatever stories they feel compelled to tell, unbounded by genre, cultural content, geographic location, or any other stereotypical expectation.
Established in 2020 by Adeel Ahmed, Lipica Shah, and Kamran Khan, 1497 has been steadfast in its commitment to championing and empowering South Asian talent, countering their historical marginalization and year preceding colonization in what is now recognized as South Asia.
Sponsored by Final Draft, the 2023 Features Lab will guide three Mentees through a comprehensive, multi-tiered journey during a five-day retreat in Malibu. This transformative process will begin with working with Sundance filmmaker and seasoned script consultant Adrienne Weiss, to bolster the refinement of their feature film scripts.

Watching the cosmic, otherworldly dread unfold in Jeffrey A. Brown's The Beach House was one of my favorite viewing experiences of 2020, so I was thrilled to find out that Brown is back with his next feature-length film, The Unheard.
With the supernatural sci-fi horror film now streaming on Shudder, I caught up with Jeffrey in a new video interview to discuss working with the talented Lachlan Watson, his personal connection to the film's story of hearing loss, and how he brought the film's creepy VHS aesthetic to life on screen. As an added bonus for fans of The Beach House, Jeffrey also talks about what his pitch for The Beach House 2 would have looked like!
You can watch the video interview with Jeffrey below, and in case you missed it, read Cass Clarke's review of The Unheard!

"I think something's wrong with the procedure. I'm hearing things..." Shudder has revealed a trailer for an indie horror film titled The Unheard, the latest creation from the director of The Beach House. It will be streaming on Shudder later this month. Lachlan Watson stars as Chloe, who undergoes an experimental procedure to restore her hearing. She begins to suffer from auditory hallucinations related to the mysterious disappearance of her mother. The director adds: "Our cast and crew have delivered a stunning piece of work and I cannot wait for audiences to take our trip into the strange realms between life & death and silence & noise!" From the writers of the Crawl film. The cast includes Michele Hicks, Nick Sandow, Brendan Meyer, Shunori Ramanathan, and Boyana Balta. This looks unsettling, especially with all the sounds. // Continue Reading ›...

This year, Netflix grabbed a whopping 35 Oscar nominations for its slate of original movies, including 10 nominations for David Fincher’s “Mank,” six nominations for Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and five nominations for the August Wilson adaptation “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” which featured the final performance from star and Best Actor nominee Chadwick Boseman. The total number of nominations for the streaming service ranked among the most ever by a single studio and dwarfed the Netflix tally in 2020 when the platform grabbed 24 nominations to lead all distributors.
But judging merely by quantity, 2021 could become the biggest year yet for Netflix. Over the final four months of the year, the studio will debut more than 40 titles, including new movies from past Oscar favorites like Adam McKay, Jane Campion, and Paolo Sorrentino as well as buzzy features from first-time filmmakers such as Lin-Manuel Miranda and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Premiering back at Sundance Film Festival in 2020, it’s not surprising there’s been a wait to see Worth, written by Max Borenstein and directed by Sara Colangelo. Picked up by Netflix timed to the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the drama follows Congress-appointed attorney Kenneth Feinberg (Michael Keaton), who runs the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. Along with his firm partner Camille Biros (Amy Ryan), Feinberg quickly produces a formula by which to calculate what each victim’s loved ones are owed. While Charles Wolf (Stanley Tucci), a community organizer mourning the death of his wife, enters the picture, their plans get complicated. Ahead of a September 3 debut on Netflix, the first trailer has now arrived.

"We can't bring them back, but we can help their loved ones." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for the indie legal drama Worth, which first premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival last year. They will be debuting this streaming in September in less than a month, just in time for the upcoming 9/11 anniversary – because it's about an attorney in Washington D.C. who battles against cynicism, bureaucracy and politics to help the victims of 9/11. Ken Feinberg learns a lesson in empathy when he is faced with the near-impossible task of determining how to compensate families who suffered incalculable losses on September 11th. Based on true events. This stars Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci, Amy Ryan, plus Tate Donovan, Shunori Ramanathan, Talia Balsam, Laura Benanti, Marc Maron, Ato Blankson-Wood, Chris Tardio, Carolyn Mignini, and Victor Slezak. It’s oddly appropriate that grief-stricken widower Ted (David Sullivan) spends most of Jack C. Newell’s “Monuments” schlepping his wife’s ashes around the geographical midpoint of the continental U.S.A. This dippily surreal existential comedy — imagine Quentin Dupieux engineering a head-on collision between “Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia” and “Little Miss Sunshine” — feels like it’s born of the exact middle ground between the big-budget escapist mainstream and the hardcore arthouse “coasts” of American cinematic output. It’s in a flyover state of mind.
Any other year, no big deal — there has traditionally been no shortage of Sundance-y, SXSW-y low-budget American filmmaking to which the awful adjective “quirky” can be applied. But right now “Monuments” — which at least has no smirk in its quirk — getting a theatrical release makes a hopeful, daffy case for the U.S. indie still having a role to play in the polarized post-pandemic movie landscape.

"It was never about tombs or gods or monuments... Happiness for us was uncomplicated." Row House has released an official trailer for an indie drama titled Monuments, which originally premiered at last year's Nashville Film Festival in the fall. A grieving widower decides to travel across the country in a stolen pick-up truck, determined to scatter his wife's ashes in Chicago. Ted attempts to sidestep more grief, loss, and familial dysfunction when he steals his wife's ashes and sets off on an impulsive odyssey through America's heartland to find something he'd lost long before her death. The film stars Marguerite Moreau as Laura, David Sullivan as Ted, Javier Muñoz as Howl, and Shunori Ramanathan as Amber. This looks good, the dark comedy makes it better. Along with the strange musical song in the background of this trailer. Huh. Here's the new official trailer (+ poster) for Jack C. Newell's Monuments,...

Just 10 days after 9/11, the United States Congress approved a bill to help compensate the families of the victims of the horrific tragedy. Despite the name of the bill — the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund — its aims weren’t only altruistic, as the bill sought to give tax-free, government-funded money to mourning families in exchange for their promise to not sue the airline companies involved in the terrorist act. Still, the bill was imagined as be for the good of all Americans: had the families sued the airlines, it was believed that the suits would crater the American economy, the aftershocks of the attack only further decimating the country. The first problem: how to calculate the payment for each film, a moral and financial conundrum that didn’t appeal to many lawyers. It did, however, appeal to attorney Ken Feinberg.

As a child, when future TV host Fred Rogers would see scary images on the news, his mother would tell him, “Look for the heroes.” If Fred were a boy today, she’d add, “Look for Ken Feinberg.” Feinberg, the lawyer at the center of Sara Colangelo’s “Worth,” specializes in putting a price tag on human tragedy. He’s brought his calculator to the shootings in Sandy Hook, Aurora, Virginia Tech and Orlando, and tallied spreadsheets for victims of the Boston Bombing, the Bp oil spill, Agent Orange, asbestos, bad breast implants, bad car ignitions, Boeing 737s, the Catholic Church and Penn State. Feinberg even haggled the value of the Zapruder Tape.
