To celebrate the release on Disney+ of Shardlake we spoke to Sean Bean, Arthur Hughes and Anthony Boyle about the importance of getting the period looks and tone just right. Starring Arthur Hughes, Anthony Boyle, Sean Bean, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis and Babou Ceesay, it is based on the internationally popular Tudor murder mystery novels by the late C.J. Sansom.
During the dissolution of the monasteries in the Tudor era Britain, Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) is sent by Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) to investigate the death of a commissioner in the remote town of Scarnsea. The star of Disney+’s Shardlake has addressed having a different disability to the character he portrays in the C.J. Sansom adaptation, which launches today.
Arthur Hughes, who was the first person with a disability to portray Richard III for the Royal Shakespeare Company, stressed that Shardlake was always going to have a disabled lead – whether him or another actor – coming as debate rages over authentic representation in TV and film.
Hughes has radial dysplasia in his right arm, while the titular Matthew Shardlake is a crime-solving barrister with scoliosis.
Hughes said at a London screening: “I was aware that Shardlake has a disability that is not my own, and I wanted to find a level of truth in what I was doing and not necessarily affecting something that was not my own experience. We look at hunchbacks in film, and they’re often mad, kind of grotesque caricature kind of things,...

The Alien franchise is set to continue on the small screen with an “FX on Hulu” TV series from Fargo creator Noah Hawley, a show that began filming last year, then had to halt production after a month due to the actors strike. It’s been a few months since we’ve heard any news about this project, as director Fede Alvarez’s film Alien: Romulus (which is set to reach theatres on August 16th) has been getting all of the attention, but now Deadline has confirmed that filming has resumed in Thailand – and Sandra Yi Sencindiver of Foundation has joined the cast to play “a senior member of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation” in multiple episodes. “We hear there’s scope for the character to grow in future seasons.”

There’s a lot going on in the world of Alien at the moment. The original classic is returning to theaters, for starters, and the Xenomorphs will be fighting Marvel’s superheroes in the upcoming mashup comic Aliens vs. Avengers. Of course, the main event for 2024 is Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus, a brand new big screen movie set between Alien and Aliens!
With so much going on, you’d be forgiven for forgetting that Disney is also working on an “Alien” television series, in the works for FX from creator Noah Hawley (“Legion”).
The Alien franchise’s first ever television series is likely to arrive sometime in 2025, set to be the first story in the franchise that takes place on Earth, roughly 70 years in the future.
FX teases, “Expect a scary thrill ride set not too far in the future here on Earth.”
So what’s the latest on the “Alien” TV series?...

During the dissolution of the monasteries in the Tudor era, Matthew Shardlake is sent by Thomas Cromwell to investigate the death of a commissioner in a remote town of Scarnsea. Described as an "eerie whodunnit adventure" drenched in mystery, suspense, deception, directed by the same filmmaker of The Other Boleyn Girl and Tulip Fever. Set in 16th century England during the dissolutions, Shardlake is a four-part drama based on the first novel in C.J. Sansom's popular Tudor murder mystery series. Hulu has shared the trailer and key art for Shardlake, the new series based on the popular Tudor murder mystery novels by C.J. Sansom. The series premieres on Wednesday, May 1, on Hulu in the U.S., Star+ in Latin America, and Disney+ in select territories.
Drenched in mystery, suspense, and deception, this four-part drama, based on the first novel in C.J. Sansom’s book series, is an eerie whodunnit adventure set in 16th-century England during the dissolution of the monasteries.
Shardlake’s sheltered life as a lawyer is turned upside down when Cromwell instructs him to investigate the murder of one of his commissioners at a monastery in the remote town of Scarnsea. The commissioner was gathering evidence to close the monastery, and it is now imperative for Cromwell’s own political survival that Shardlake both solves the murder and closes the monastery.

It’s the battle of the TV Cromwells! On BBC One later this year, Mark Rylance returns in the role of Henry VIII’s right hand man in series two of Wolf Hall, adapted from Dame Hilary Mantel’s acclaimed novels. But before then, Sean Bean will play Thomas Cromwell in Disney+ British historical crime mystery Shardlake.
(Incidentally, if Bean wanted to dispel his reputation for playing characters who meet sticky, early ends, then his agent may want to get their head in a history book before forwarding the next script…)
Thomas Cromwell is a supporting role in Shardlake, a new four-part series adapted from the first in C.J Sansom’s successful mystery novels about Matthew Shardlake, a 16th century lawyer born with what would now be understood as scoliosis, and who investigates murder mysteries for the Crown.

Alien TV series is meant to run for multiple seasons, but Noah Hawley knows where the story is going
The Alien franchise is set to continue on the small screen with an “FX on Hulu” TV series from Fargo creator Noah Hawley, a show that began filming last year, then had to halt production after a month due to the actors strike. Production is set to resume any day now – and during an interview with Collider, Hawley confirmed that while the series is intended to be a recurring show that will last for more than one season, he also knows where the story is going. He’s just not sure yet how many seasons it will take to get there.
Hawley said, “I think that endings are what gives a story meaning, and so you should never start a story without some sense of where it’s going because then you can really build that meaning into it. With Legion, I had what felt like a three-act structure to...

Decades after making the sci-fi horror classic Alien, director Ridley Scott returned to the Alien franchise with the intention of making a series of prequels that would tell us all about the “Space Jockey” and the creation of the xenomorph. The mythology Scott presented in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant didn’t sit well with a lot of fans – and when Alien: Covenant underwhelmed and underperformed, his prequel series came to an early end. Now the franchise is set to continue with a new film directed by Fede Alvarez and an “FX on Hulu” TV series from Fargo creator Noah Hawley… and during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hawley confirmed that he’s one of the fans who wasn’t very impressed by the story told in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. So don’t expect to see nods to the mythology or technology of those films in the TV show.

The Alien franchise will return with its first ever television series in 2025, and it’s set to be the first story in the franchise that takes place on Earth, roughly 70 years in the future.
Creator Noah Hawley‘s take on the Alien franchise has been described as both an “extension and reinvention” of the films, but don’t expect Ridley Scott’s prequel movies to factor into the series. Scott, who’s on board the FX series as producer, dug into the origins of the Xenomorphs in both Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, but Hawley reveals in a new chat with Kcrw’s The Business that he’s not interested in playing with any of those story threads.
Furthermore, he’s only interested in exploring the tech of the original two movies.

Fargo creator Noah Hawley is making an Alien TV series for “FX on Hulu”, and the show started filming in Bangkok, Thailand last year – but then, after a month, production had to be paused to wait out the Screen Actors Guild strike. That strike is now over, and Alien is expected to resume filming any day now. As production revs back up, Deadline has learned that Moe Bar-El, whose previous credits include The Peripheral, Better, Femme, and Count Abdulla, has been cast in a recurring role. They just weren’t able to dig up any details on the role he’ll be playing.
Bar-El joins previously announced cast members Sydney Chandler (Pistol) as the meta-human Wendy, who has the body of an adult, but the brain and consciousness of a child; Essie Davis (The Babadook) as Dame Silvia, Alex Lawther (The End of the F*cking World) as a soldier named Cj,...

Baba Lenga is quite a character. When the unassuming bathroom attendant played by Dipo Ola is first introduced, he’s just trying to get through his thankless shift spraying cologne and handing out towels next to the toilets. He takes his job seriously, but not so seriously that, when push comes to shove, he will let a couple of hard-partying coke-heads snort a few lines. But a switch gets flipped when Baba spots that same couple in the back alley, and the aggro dude is getting a little too forceful with his hired “date.” It’s then that we see Baba’s dark side, and soon after we learn where it came from: This current U.K. bathroom attendant is a former child soldier from the Congo. Showtime is moving Ethan Hawke’s The Good Lord Bird later in the year – a shift designed to put more context around the abolitionist miniseries as the focus sharpens on the issue of systemic racism in the U.S.
The Hawke drama was originally intended to premiere on August 9 but will now move its launch to October 4 in a slightly earlier slot – 9pm rather than 10pm.
The series, which is based on James McBride’s award-winning novel, is told from the point of view of Onion (Joshua Caleb Johnson), a fictional enslaved boy who becomes a member of John Brown’s motley family of abolitionist soldiers and eventually finds himself participating in the famous 1859 raid at Harpers Ferry. Brown’s raid failed to initiate the slave revolt he intended but was a key instigating event of the Civil War.

Showtime has moved up the premiere date of its upcoming miniseries “The Comey Rule” based on former FBI director James Comey’s memoir. It will air over two nights on Sept. 27 and 28.
Last week, Showtime announced that “The Comey Rule,” which stars Brendan Gleeson as President Donald Trump, would air in late November. The election is scheduled for Nov. 3. Showtime told TheWrap yesterday it was likely to move up.
Additionally, Showtime picked up the six-episode drama “We Hunt Together” from BBC Studios, which “explores the intoxication of sexual attraction and the dangerous power of emotional manipulation. As two conflicted detectives (Eve Myles and Babou Ceesay) track down a pair of deadly killers (Hermoine Corfield and Dipo Ola), the series reveals how finding a volatile form of solace in another can have dire consequences.” It will premiere on Aug. 9, moving back the Ethan Hunt-led “Good Lord Bird” to Oct. 4.

Showtime Moves Comey Miniseries to Before Presidential Election Following Cast and Producer Backlash
Showtime has officially moved the premiere date for its miniseries about former FBI Director James Comey and his tumultuous relationship with President Donald Trump to prior to the presidential election.
The move comes after backlash from the cast and crew, expressed in a letter written by series writer and director Billy Ray. In the letter, Ray said he was told that the decision to air the two episodes after the election was “made at the very highest levels of Viacom.”
“We all were hoping to get this story in front of the American people months before the coming election. And that was a reasonable expectation considering that we’d been given a mandate by the network to do whatever was necessary to deliver by May 15,” Ray wrote.
His and the cast’s wishes have now been granted, as the series will air over two consecutive nights on Sept. 27 and 28. News...

Troika co-founders Conor McCaughan and Michael Duff have left the esteemed British agency they built up over 15 years into one of the U.K.’s top talent firms.
Variety has confirmed McCaughan and Duff have departed the business, which they co-founded in 2005 with Melanie Rockcliffe and grew into one of the country’s leading management firms for drama and comedy talent. It’s believed the duo’s contracts will officially conclude at the end of the year, and it’s still unclear what their next steps will be.
Collectively, McCaughan and Duff’s client rosters represent some of the agency’s — and indeed the British industry’s — top names, including Jamie Dornan, Michael Fassbender, Paddy Considine, Ruth Wilson, Babou Ceesay, Peter Capaldi, Holliday Grainger, Michaela Coel, Jenna Coleman, Juno Temple, Matt Smith, Joe Dempsie, Keeley Hawes, Lena Headey and Daisy Haggard.

On paper, the martial-arts epic Into the Badlands is a show so unconventional that its creators were shocked that AMC wanted to make it. “We would have bet against it, for sure,” co-creator Miles Millar said Monday, still sounding a bit surprised that the show actually made it to air in November 2015. “The show ended up being the most satisfying experience of our career. We were given complete freedom. It’s been amazing because, you know, the show is insane.”
Millar’s writing and producing partner, Al Gough, didn’t agree with that — the show isn’t “insane,” he says, it is in actuality “totally batshit crazy.” Whether the series has been genuinely bananas or just aggressively quirky, Into the Badlands gave up the ghost tonight after its 32nd episode closed out its third season.

Miles Millar and Al Gough talk about a particular death scene from "Requiem for the Fallen." (You know which one we're talking about.)
This Into The Badlands article contains spoilers.
The penultimate episode of Into the Badlands is memorable for a lot of reasons, but the one that sticks out the most is the opening teaser sequence where we see Pilgrim (played by the masterful Babou Ceesay) kill and decapitate Nix with his bare hands in a Dark Eyed fit of dogmatic rage.
When he's done, he tosses the severed head of his once surrogate daughter down the stairs of The Widow's inner sanctum with no sign of remorse showing on his face. Talk about cold! Meanwhile, the camera wants to make sure that we know she's absolutely, positively dead too, so it not only lingers on a shot of her severed head — it zooms in closer.

Into the Badlands Season 3 Episode 15
I walked past a billboard the other day that said “If you want to change your future, change your now”.
That phrase sums up this entire season of Into the Badlands for me.
Instead of delivering a gloomy funeral procession hinted at by its name, "Requiem for the Fallen" looks to the future. It reminds us that the one thing all of its characters want the most right now is change — just a little bit of change to make the future better for the next generation. After all, it's the only noble act that can collectively wash the blood off these weary killers' hands. It's the utltimate act of redemption, really, and it's no wonder it's the holy grail in their final quest.

Into the Badlands Season 3 Episode 12
If last week’s episode tied up Badlands' major story arc in a neat little bloodstained bow, then “Curse of the Red Rain” provides closure for its ongoing romantic subplots, all of which have magically appeared over the course of this season. And, as its name suggests, one of them doesn't end too romantically.
More importantly though, this episode is a vehicle to showcase amazing performances from its female cast members, who have become the best part of this show this year. Lorraine Touissant especially, is fantastic as the venomous yet empathetic Cressida. She plays the role with a sense of conviction that matches that of Babou Ceesay’s Pilgrim. Chicago - According to my YouTube history, unlikely animal friendships would likely be in my top 10 most watched videos, alongside Diy home projects and finding out if that sharp pain means I’m dying. Something as simple as a cat and dog being bffs is adorable, but unlike what “The Best of Enemies” would have you believe, two naturally opposing forces don’t always need to play nice.
Rating: 1.5/5.0
“Based on a true story” is one of those terms that is thrown around pretty casually when it comes to film. It could mean anything from, “Hey, we’re giving you most of these real events that happened!” to “These real people existed, but we basically made everything else up!” Usually, if the story sounds too good to be true, it likely isn’t. In the case of activist Ann Atwater and former Klan leader C.P. Ellis, the real story is stranger than fiction.

Robin Bissell’s “The Best of Enemies” may not be some kind of game-changing corrective to all the retrograde films about race in America (we’re talking about an uplifting historical biopic directed by the executive producer of “Seabiscuit”), but this sturdy drama has the good sense to recognize that allyship is only valuable when it’s hard. When it’s a sacrifice. When it forces white people to put some of their own skin in the game.
Feel-good Hollywood movies about race in America — specifically the ones that are meant to assuage white audiences of the latent guilt they feel about the historical and ongoing treatment of black people in this country — tend to hinge on the concept of friendship. And not just any friendship, but true friendship. The clumsy Eddie Murphy vehicle “Mr. Church” was “inspired by a true friendship.” So was “Green Book,” even if the truth...

When “Into the Badlands” launched in 2015, its existence was relatively insane: a high-octane sci-fi martial arts series, that the creators of the WB’s “Smallville” weren’t adapting from a book or a comic — they were inventing whole cloth. Four years later, this is also insane but true: after approximately the other eleven billionity shows that have followed in its wake, it still remains unique.
That’s a massive accomplishment on its own. So is the show lasting for as long as it has, especially given that there are plenty of other out-there concepts which never made it past their first seasons.
However, it’s still going to be sad to say goodbye to the AMC drama, which returns for its final run of episodes on Sunday, March 24. It arguably might be said there was more life left in this show, even — that it’s too soon for farewells.

TV certainly doesn’t lack for shows about saving “the fate of humanity,” as one character explains in the latest trailer for the AMC series “Into the Badlands.” But then again, since its premiere in the fall of 2015, this TV martial arts epic has never been a show to do things like other series would. In grand AMC tradition, the show split up its final super-sized season into two halves, the latter premiering late next month. This farewell batch of eight episodes sees the culmination of a growing arc, featuring the power-hungry Pilgrim (Babou Ceesay) threatening to track drastic cosmic action that could spell doom for nearly every other character on the series. Sunny (Daniel Wu) is juggling an attempt to thwart Pilgrim’s plans with plenty of his own personal battles, including another threat in the form of a vengeance-hungry M.K. (Aramis Knight).

Writer/director/producer John Ridley has signed a new five-year overall deal with ABC Studios. This is the longest-term pact for Ridley at the studio where he has been since 2014 with a two-year overall deal, followed by a three-year one.
The long-term agreement reflects the desire by TV studios to secure their talent amid a red-hot overall deal market, with a number of bidding wars over top-level creative talent going on right now.
Under the new deal, which is strictly for TV, Ridley will develop content across multiple platforms. He is currently working on a number of projects for broadcast, cable, and streaming.

AMC’s martial arts drama Into the Badlands will end after the upcoming final eight episodes of its third season, which will debut March 24. The network also has set an April 24 premiere date for Season 2 of drama The Son, starring Pierce Brosnan, which will be its last.
Neither cancellation is particularly surprising. Both Into the Bandlands and The Son were renewed for Season 3 and Season 2, respectively, almost two years ago. Into the Badlands’ 16-episode third season was completed awhile ago, the cast was released, and a number of them have taken on new acting gigs. As for The Son, as a Western, it did draw respectable viewership though it was old-skewing. Additionally, I hear star Brosnon only had signed a short-term contract which is the case with many movie stars who do TV series these days.
