In an announcement today by his family’s attorney, Aaron Hernandez was added to the growing list of athletes who have been diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or Cte.
The degenerative brain disease is linked to repeated head trauma or concussions. Its symptoms depression, short-term memory loss, impulsive behavior and confusion — and these symptoms can begin to appear long after a player’s career. Evidence is mounting suggesting a link between playing football and the disease.

When a slot suddenly opens up in the schedule of mega star Will Smith, it is pretty big news in Tinseltown. Now that the actor has exited Julius Onah’s Brilliance, his schedule window may soon be filled with the upcoming, untitled drama being produced by Ridley Scott – exploring the issue of brain trauma in American Football.
It all starts with Sony, who have the rights to a GQ article titled ‘Brain Game,’ written by Jeanne Marie Laskas. Passionate about the subject, Ridley Scott originally intended to direct the film, but will now stick to producing it, with Peter Landesman (Parkland) attached as writer and director. Scott has been developing the project along with his producing partner, Giannina Facio, and with Landesman having completed the script, cameras look set to roll before the end of the year.

Exclusive: Isaiah Washington wants to follow his Blue Caprice turn as Beltway Sniper John Allen Muhammad by starring in Game Time Decision, an indie film by writer/director Matthew A. Cherry (The Last Fall) that tackles the provocative topic of concussion-related injuries in professional football players. Washington will be an executive producer on the film. They plan to start production next spring. Washington will play a retired professional football player suffering from a degenerative brain disease who attempts to reconnect with his estranged son to warn him about returning to play a game too soon after sustaining a concussion. Cherry is a former NFL wide receiver, and he and Washington want to highlight Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, a condition which unfortunately is growing more prominent with the failing health and suicides of former gridiron greats. Just last week I revealed that Ridley Scott and Giannina Facio are interviewing A-list writers to...

Warner Bros. has released the first official photo of new Superman Henry Cavill, who definitely lives up to the superhero’s nickname and the movie title: Man of Steel. Director Zack Snyder has said he was going for a ‘bigger, muscular, retro’ Superman and Henry Cavill certainly seems to fit the bill.

What we want to know after seeing this photo of Henry Cavill as Superman with muscles bulging all over the place is how is this guy going to convincingly portray nerdy, bumbling Clark Kent? Seriously!
Cavill, 28, will portray Superman and his alter ego opposite Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Kevin Costner and Diane Lane will play Superman’s adoptive parents. In what is just, in my opinion, weird casting, Russell Crowe will play Superman’s birth father, Jor-El, and...

Director Guillermo Del Toro took a chance on a vision, and it seems it hasn’t worked out for him. He walked out on The Hobbit films when MGM’s bankruptcy issues cause the project to stall. He decided he wanted to make a new kind of horror movie that combined slick 3D effects with the whole indie vibe that true horror lovers really go for.
The movie was going to be an adaptation of Hp Lovecraft’s At The Mountains of Madness. Tom Cruise was slated in the starring role. Unfortunately, Universal Studios has shut down the project for good, just as The Hobbit movies are starting to be filmed. Universal’s argument is that while Del Toro is a good director, right now the studio has to concentrate on real money-makers, and since the Del Toro has made critically acclaimed films that have under-performed at the box office,...

The assorted crimes and professional accomplishments of players still on the field.
The NFL playoffs are almost here! The New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts might both go undefeated and meet in the Super Bowl! Also: There are criminals all over the field! Still!
To that point, Infojocks created these fantastic infographics detailing the "All-Criminal 1st Team" for offense and defense. Unlike previous attempts to make such lists, this one includes only players from recent years--and it shows both their crimes and professional awards. Many of them are still playing now. And if actually assembled these teams, they'd be pretty good--particularly the defense.
[Infojocks via SimpleComplexity]
Editor's Note: After we posted this piece, news broke that Chris Henry had died in what looked initially like an accident--circumstances are still being investigated. As sad as it is that Henry lost his life way too soon, none of the facts behind this piece have changed.
