8.8 How It's Gotta Be
There's rarely a reason for a television show to go longer than its typical running time. If it's a show like Game Of Thrones, who are making miniature movies and trying to cram a significant amount of material into a shorter amount of time, it makes sense. If you're a show like The Walking Dead, there's not a lot of need to go past the usual running time because there's going to be plenty of opportunities to tell the rest of the story in future episodes. The Walking Dead has been on eight seasons at this point, and isn't going away any time soon; despite the slipping ratings, it's still one of the most popular programmes on...

The Walking Dead is a show with a lot of interesting characters who speak in interesting ways. Negan is probably the most obvious one; he spins long sentences and crams in strange, infantile profanity. Rick has lots of long speeches that allow writers to really dig into a specific topic. Jadis is... well, she's different, but not entirely complicated, you just cut out non-essential words and boil everything down to noun-verb or verb-adjective phrases. Some have been critical of Ryan Murphy's tendency to use the same actors over and over again. I haven't been, but I can see why some complain about it. If you have, say, Jessica Lange, you're going to try to give her things to do, whether or not it actually fits the characters. Sarah Paulson might vary in screen time, but she's usually screaming and crying at some point, as she tends to be the victim rather than the victimizer. Evan Peters had a breakout first season, and he's been in the show to varying degrees since then, usually not in the sort of character he's playing in Cult.

Pay-offs weren't delayed, but there was a continual process of setting up dominoes, then toppling them, and setting up more dominoes that drove the first season forward all the way until the ending (which I maintain was satisfying, particularly given how some seasons have sputtered to a halt).

Kai Anderson is a master manipulator. Since well before the Presidential election that kicked off the drama of Cult, he's been collecting followers a person, a piece at a time. Every person Kai has collected within his little group of followers has come via a different method. For each one, he's managed to figure out just how to reach out to them by painstakingly researching them, both online and face to face, and tailoring his argument to that individual.
Granted, Kai's general patter is roughly the same. He's all about turning fear and anger into power. He makes himself into whatever the person he's speaking to needs when they need him.

It's a show with a vampire that isn't a show specifically about vampires. It's killed more people in three episodes this season than every Godfather movie combined. However, one of the weirdest things you can say about Preacher is that it's made Hitler into a likable character. Yes, Eugene, that Hitler.
In the world of Preacher, Hell is an interesting place. It's essentially a combination of solitary confinement in a modern-day prison mixed with a little bit of the paranormal waiting room in Beetlejuice.

Perhaps this is going to be a trend this season. The first episode of the second season of Preacher opens up with a massive police chase and a gun battle. The second episode features a big car crash and yet another massive gun battle, this time between the unstoppable Saint of Killers and a collection of gun enthusiasts who happen to be in the same hotel as Jesse Custer. Chekov's gun was brought up in the first episode, thanks to the hotel's signage welcoming a gathering of gun enthusiasts, and in the second episode, it's put to great use, with the assembled gun fans firing pistols, rifles, and automatic weapons at the Saint of Killers,...

2.1 On The Road
God is missing, and Jesse Custer knows it. Now it's up to a lapsed preacher, a criminal, and a drug-addled vampire to track Him down and hold Him accountable for His disappearance. If there's some need for assistance, then maybe Jesse and company will be able to provide it. If God has simply abandoned His creation, then Jesse has sworn to hold Him accountable for the disappearing act. It's a bold claim, and it's going to shape up to be a long, strange journey across the American south.
I have to give a lot of credit to Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

It's difficult for American Gods to get much better than it does in Lemon Scented You, if only because it provides viewers with everything they've been waiting for while also giving them something completely unexpected. The show features some spectacular acting heavyweights, and while they've all had plenty of chances to show off their skills, this week gives every major character in the show a showcase moment, and to list them all would be to do a straight recap of the show, minute-by-minute. Suffice to say, I could not be any happier with American Gods than I am this week.

The Walking Dead is a show that's depended a lot on its ability to cleverly execute a very specific type of arc. Rick and company face a big threat, they fall apart, and then at the end they all come back together and beat whatever big threat they've been squared off with. Not everyone lives, and new characters replace old friends, but the core of the show remains the same. Rick pulls his group together, everyone rallies, and some obstacle is overcome. Some things change, but the ultimate finish is the same.

Every time American Horror Story delves into a different genre of show, they've hit it dead on the nose every time. My Roanoke Nightmare was perfect; the reunion reality show was completely accurate even as it went off the rails. Chapter 10 bypasses both conceits by throwing a mixed bag of genres at the screen. The show's segments are, in no particular order, a true crime show, a series of YouTube videos, a confessional prime-time celebrity interview, and best of all, a ridiculous ghost-hunting show with a dead accurate presentation.

It's a lot to handle if you're even slightly motion sensitive.
Unfortunately for me, I'm highly motion sensitive. I get carsick if I try to read in a moving vehicle. I've listened to Cloverfield. I had to take medication after trying to watch As Above, So Below. I bought and gave away the video game Doom...

Rick has never had a great grasp on the people of Alexandria. Despite Deanna's support, he's faced a lot of resistance from within the community, particularly where Spencer is concerned. The latter has been a vocal critic of Rick despite his mother's support for the gun-slinging lawman, and the actions of this week's episode won't give Spencer, or anyone else who doubts Rick's abilities, a reason to second-guess their scepticism of the Ricktatorship. Or rather, the puppet state Rick runs for Negan.
