After weeks of moving through scuzzy bars with off-beat cybernetic accouterment, toiling under a static-grey sky to gain control of cyberspace, our heroes have made it to Zion. The Rastafarians who greet these travelers from a ship named for an important historical figure pay little mind to our male protagonist. However, they cannot believe their luck in meeting his female companion, whose reputation far exceeds his.
Regardless of the chilly reception, the protagonist remains undeterred. Zion is, after all, a key part in mission to understand a powerful AI controlling reality.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that the above description comes form The Matrix, the groundbreaking sci-fi action movie from 1999 or its sequels. But I’m not describing Neo and Trinity aboard the Nebuchadnezzar. I’m talking about Case and Molly reaching the Rastafarian colony of Zion with help from their ship the Marcus Garvey in the 1984 novel Neuromancer by William Gibson.

Josh Kramer, who worked as a film producer and financier and Amazon executive, died Nov. 27 in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 67.
Kramer started his career in entertainment in foreign sales for the Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis. By pre-selling foreign movie rights, he became an integral member of the company, financing films such as “Manhunter” and “Blue Velvet.” He led the acquisition of the film rights for Madonna’s first concert film “Madonna: Truth or Dare” and later sold the film overseas.
Rachael Horovitz, who worked with him at De Laurentiis, remembered Kramer on his memorial site. “A concert pianist who helped right the Beastie Boys tourbus one night in Paris when rabid fans were tipping it over; a patient negotiator who cried reading J.D. Salinger. His contradictions made him.”

If you're a movie or TV viewer, you've seen Chris Diamantopoulos. Probably many times. If you're an animation nerd, you've heard Chris Diamantopoulos. Again, probably many times. Anyone who is pop culture-literate in the year 2023 has encountered the actor in some capacity -- even if you don't know his name, you know his face. But you can be forgiven for not recognizing his voice, because his chameleonic voiceover work suggests the work of a dozen different actors.
After cutting his teeth on the Broadway stage, Diamantopoulos smashed into film and television and has seemingly never stopped working. You may know him from roles on major TV series like "CSI," "24," "The Sopranos" and "Arrested Development," where he eased into those shows' distinct tones with ease. He was the sound guy who tempted Pam away from Jim in the final season of "The Office." He was that guy from the horse...

Back in 1986, David Cronenberg directed a remake of Kurt Neumann’s 1958 sci-fi horror classic The Fly (which was based on George Langelaan’s short story) – and the result is considered to be one of the best remakes of all time. 20th Century Fox (now the Disney subsidiary 20th Century Studios) has been wanting to replicate that success with another remake for a couple decades now… but the project has never managed to escape from development hell. Cronenberg wanted to come back and make another Fly movie, but it fell apart over budgetary issues. Screenwriter Todd Lincoln wrote a remake of The Fly that he described as a “dark, twisted, grounded re- imagining… Part Val-Lewton, part J.G. Ballard, part Neal Stephenson with, some Horror Manga touches.” The studio wasn’t into it. J.D. Dillard was attached to direct a new version of The Fly for years, but recently stepped away from it.

Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof's "Mrs. Davis" is going to be one seriously wild ride. /Film's Jacob Hall has called it "The Lonely Island riffing on Neal Stephenson," but he's also detected notes of Chuck Jones and Kurt Vonnegut. Anything this anarchic — and, praise the saints, original — in this day and age demands our attention. And if it's good, we must protect it with all our might.
It's both refreshing and frustrating to write about "Mrs. Davis" sight unseen. I'm not the most avid comic book reader or gamer nowadays, so it's exciting to know there isn't a rabid fanbase that's way ahead of me as I venture into this universe. But as a viewer who prefers to know as little as possible prior to watching a new movie or TV show, I'm tasked with laying down tracks to make it sound interesting for you, the potential Peacock subscriber.

Trying to describe "Mrs. Davis," the new Peacock TV series from creators Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof, will be a tough hill to climb for any pop culture critic. I feel like I've settled on "The Lonely Island riffing on Neal Stephenson," but there's also shades of Chuck Jones, early Kurt Vonnegut, Lindelof's own "The Leftovers," and even the classic Vertigo comic book "Preacher." It's goofy until it's sincere, outrageous until it cuts to the bone, frustrating until it's ... Well, until it's not.
One thing is for sure: it's the most audacious science fiction TV show I've seen since the early episodes of HBO's "Westworld," and the two episodes that screened at the SXSW Film Festival make a hard sell for the Peacock streaming service. What was once a footnote in the streaming wars has increasingly distinguished itself by taking big swings, and this is certainly a big swing. I...

(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The series: "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners"
Where you can stream it: Netflix
The pitch: "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" is an original anime collaboration between CD Projekt Red ("The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt") and Studio Trigger, an anime production company that's become known for their high-intensity action sequences. The series follows all-new characters set in the same world as the "Cyberpunk 2077" video game from CD Projekt Red, following their adventures as cyberpunk "edgerunners" living on the fringes of society in the futuristic Night City. The series focuses on David (voiced by Kenn in the Japanese version and Zach Aguilar in the English version), who faces a choice between living (and probably dying) as a cyberpunk, or trying to make a life for himself by kissing up and following the rules.

The Metaverse is coming. But before we get to that future dystopia, be it Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash or Zuck’s cringey-what-have-you, there is this charming little cafe-stop along the way. Joe Hunting’s We Met In Virtual Reality is a surprisingly sophisticated documentary, shot entirely inside the VRChat platform at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. The film follows a smattering of isolated VR users, and lonely souls from around the world, as they find community, companionship, and nuptial courtship. There is Jenny, who teaches American Sign Language (Asl) to whomever attends her virtual classroom. She lectures in short jean overalls, flowing pink hair, and large striped boots, occasionally with a black tie. She presents herself as a cartoon fantasy, doing seriously useful work, and...

What with talk of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings television series heating up, I suppose it’s only fitting that the rest of the studio’s slate has been pushed to the back burner, at least temporarily – especially when considering the production’s unprecedented ten-figure price tag.
Nonetheless, seeing as the other day things began falling into place regarding the Tolkien adaptation – with a possible premiere scheduled for 2021, and Peter Jackson back in the mix – Amazon Studios CEO Jennifer Salke has turned her attention to another hotly awaited small screen translation, The Dark Tower.

Remember that Dark Tower movie that came out last year? No? I don’t blame you – it was one of the biggest flops of 2017, receiving horrible reviews and being all but disowned by creator Stephen King. Fans of the book series despaired, presumably figuring that the property would never get the careful adaptation it merited. But now they’re getting another bite of the cherry, courtesy of Amazon.
Interestingly, it looks like the show won’t be totally disconnected from the poorly received movie. According to Syfy, the pilot script has been written by the film’s director, Nikolaj Arcel, in collaboration with Anders Thomas Jensen, who’ll oversee the series alongside former Walking Dead showrunner Glen Mazzara. Meanwhile, veteran screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, Solo: A Star Wars Story’s Ron Howard and Imagine Entertainment founder Brian Grazer are set to executive produce.

After The Dark Tower film landed flat with audiences and critics, I wasn't sure if the TV series that was being planned would actually happen. Well, according to Deadline, it's moving forward at Amazon! I think this is great news because it's giving this incredibly epic book series another shot! Just because the movie didn't turn out as good as fans hoped it would be, doesn't mean that the series can't be great. In fact, I think it would do much better as a TV series than films.

The Amazon Prime streaming service confirmed a number of 'genre', 'high-profile' drama series in development, including "Snow Crash" (1992), a science fiction novel by author Neal Stephenson, covering history, linguistics, anthropology, archaeology, religion, computer science, politics, cryptography, memetics and philosophy:
"...'Hiro Protagonist' is a hacker and pizza delivery driver for a criminal mob. He meets 'Y.T.' a young skateboard ;Kourier', during a failed attempt to make a delivery on time. It was six years ago that Joe Cornish broke out with “Attack The Block,” and the wait has been far too long for something new from the filmmaker. Thankfully, he’s currently filming his next feature, “The Kid Who Would Be King,” which features among others Rebecca Ferguson and Patrick Stewart but to be honest, there’s something else we would’ve preferred going in front of cameras: “Snow Crash.” Cornish signed up to bring Neal Stephenson‘s cyberpunk novel to the big screen hot on the heels of “Attack The Block,” but things stalled out.

Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash is one of the great unadapted novels of modern science fiction, right up there with its granddaddy in the cyberpunk genre, William Gibson’s Neuromancer. Given how screen-ready some of Snow Crash’s most famous sequences are, though—most notably, the high-speed, action-heavy pizza delivery…

The streaming platform has been ramping up its slate with new projects as part of its programming strategy overhaul in search of big, buzzy shows. A major emphasis has been put on fast-tracking big-scope genre drama series in the mold of Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, with Sharon Tal, brought in earlier this year as Head Of Event Series, tasked with spearheading efforts. The deals for Ringworld, Lazarus and Snow Crash are part of that push.

It introduced John Boyega, features Jodie Whitaker, and it's a great invasion movie. We take a second look at Attack The Block...
In 2011, the writer and director Joe Cornish released his debut feature film, Attack The Block, in which aliens begin their invasion of Earth on a South London housing estate. With a cast of rising stars and a director as confident as they come, the movie quickly gained a cult following and has proven itself a wellspring of talent.

No doubt eager to capitalize on the upcoming live-action adaptation, Anchor Bay Entertainment and its subsidiary Manga Entertainment are gearing up for a deluxe rerelease of the original animated Ghost in the Shell. First released in Japan and the Us in 1995, the landmark science fiction film by legendary director Mamoru Oshii is one of the most visionary and influential films in the “cyberpunk” subgenre that exploded onto the silver screen with Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and enjoys a longstanding literary tradition thanks to authors like William Gibson and Neal Stephenson. Taking an unmistakably Japanese (and indubitably Oshii) approach to the genre, Ghost famously features both mesmerizing action sequences that inspired the Wachowskis in the direction of The Matrix, and lengthy meditations on transhumanism, existentialism, and spirituality in a hypercapitalist dystopia where human bodies and memories are subject to the same means of production and reproduction as any material resource.

Hard to believe but it has been five years since British filmmaker Joe Cornish exploded onto the scene with the very well-received alien invasion tale "Attack The Block" which also launched the career of John Boyega.
With the exception of some work on the script for Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin" and the early drafts of Marvel's "Ant-Man," Cornish hasn't had any credits since. Now though, it looks like he's finally returning with a new project that looks to be going in front of the cameras next year.
The film is an adaptation of Neal Stephenson's beloved 1992 sci-fi novel classic "Snow Crash" which deals with things such as virtual realities, the dark web, and global conspiracy in a future where most power has been ceded to private organizations and entrepreneurs. Producer Frank Marshall told Collider this week that it's almost ready to be made:

Ron Howard may well end up being the first person to figure out how to turn one of Neal Stephenson’s books into a film. That is very good news in general. Stephenson is one of my favorite working authors, and each time he releases a book, I find myself living in his world for a few months. I just recently went back and read Snow Crash for the first time in a long time, and it’s amazing how clearly he found his gift even just three books into his remarkable career. I remember reading Snow Crash and immediately thinking, “There are going to be filmmakers fighting to make this thing.” I also remember thinking that Stephenson’s imagination was so far out that it would take civilization decades to catch up with him. I had no idea he was more of a “right-around-the-corner” tech prophet, and when you...

Star Wars: Episode VIII: Director Rian Johnson shared a photo from the production of Star Wars: Episode VIII that is, by itself, not terribly revealing. It shows a robe that looks very much like the one worn by Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Johnson's caption is probably more revealing: "In the home stretch," alluding to the completion of principal photography on the movie, which began on February 15 and is expected to conclude soon. The movie is scheduled for release on December 15, 2017. [Tumblr] Seveneves: Ron Howard will direct a big-screen adaptation of Neal Stephenson's sci-fi novel Seveneves. Director Ron Howard has just attached himself to a pretty epic-sounding sci-fi film project called Seveneves, and he is reuniting with Apollo 13 screenwriter Bill Broyles to bring it to the big screen. This story has a huge concept and it sounds like it could end up being Howard's most ambitious film yet.
The movie is based on a novel written by Neal Stephenson and it's described as "a thought-provoking science fiction epic—a grand story of annihilation and survival spanning five thousand years." Here's the full description of the book:
A catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb. In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise an ambitious plan to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere, in outer space.
But the complexities and unpredictability of human nature coupled with unforeseen challenges and dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers,...

Ron Howard is bringing the Apollo 13 team back to board Neal Stephenson's vision of the future.
Director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer have made several films together, few more successful than 1995's Apollo 13. The Oscar-nominated story of the space mission of the same title was a huge box office success. Now? The team are coming back together on a new sci-fi film, an adaptation of Neal Stephenson's novel, Seveneves. Apollo 13 screenwriter Bill Broyles is back to pen the script, too.
Seveneves tells the story of countries coming together to save the world in the face of a catastrophic event set to end the Earth. A new home is needed, and duly found. Then, fast forward a few thousand years, and, even before you can say Battlestar Galactica, the search to find Earth again begins.
Skydance is overseeing the project, with David Ellison producing for the firm.
