Lunarcy!
Directed by Simon Ennis
Canada, 2012
Simon Ennis’s Lunarcy! is an affectionate, knowing documentary that looks at a diverse group of individuals who share an obsession with the moon. The star of the piece is Christopher Carson, whose enterprise, The Luna Project, is aimed at kick-starting the process of moon colonisation. Armed with the slogan, Luna City or Bust!, he travels to science fiction conventions, high schools – anywhere he might find a disproportionate number of geeks – spreading the word and raising money to get his project off the ground. If this was a dramatic film, he would have to be played by a young Jeffrey Combs – he has that combination of weird wit and obscure intelligence – but is a lot more self-aware than he initially appears.
Another man working towards lunar colonisation is Peter Kokh, who is not particularly keen to live there himself (unless he can take his...

Lunarcy! is a charming and humorous story of four eccentrics who've dedicated their entire lives to the Moon. We've got Christopher Carson, the young founder of the Luna Project and a supporter of abandoning Earth forever in favor of a new lunar colony, Dennis Hope, president of the Galactic Government and the official owner of the Moon, Alan Bean, the fourth man to walk on the Moon and the world's leading astronaut painter, and Peter Kokh, space advocate and editor of the Moon Miner's Manifesto. Ahead of Lunarcy!'s SXSW premiere, we spoke with lead character Christopher Carson, director Simon Ennis and producer Jonas Bell Pasht about the dreaming big and finding the right crater to call home. If the South by Southwest Film Festival was burdened by anything this year, it was an abundance of quality documentaries. It seemed that, while the narrative side of things was surprisingly sparse (where was the "21 Jump Street" or "The Raid" of this year?), the documentary selection was stronger than ever – there were more buzzed-about entries than we had time for, quite frankly (sorry "Medora!"), and almost everything we saw impressed us to one degree or another. Here is a quick rundown of a handful of key SXSW documentaries – "Lunarcy!," about people obsessed with the moon; "Downloaded," which aims to be the definitive documentary about file sharing program Napster; "Twenty Feet from Stardom," which charts the history of pop music from the backup singers' point of view; "Reincarnated," about Snoop Dogg's transformation into reggae titan Snoop Lion; and "I Am Divine," about director John Waters' corpulent muse, cross-dressing sensation Divine.

Simon Ennis' "Lunarcy!" began as an honest documentary about the Moon and those most enthusiastic about it, but the more time the crew spent with their subjects, the more the focus of their documentary shifted towards the men and women who have devoted their lives to the our planet's Moon, distilling their eccentric love into a study of how we find inspiration in our passions. The film's slated to make its television premiere on Epix after the festival on April 3rd. What it's about: A comic documentary about a disparate group of dreamers and schemers who all have one thing in common: they've devoted their lives to the Moon. Tell Us About Yourself: My first feature, You Might As Well Live, premiered at Slamdance in 2009 and won an award there. Aside from that I've made 3 shorts that all premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (where Lunarcy!'s world...

Epix will kick off a new slate of Wednesday-night documentaries April 3 with director Simon Ennis’ Lunarcy!, about a group of disparate characters who share an obsession with the moon. The film bowed at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival and also will play at the upcoming SXSW Film Festival. It has already gained a cult following thanks to its cast of idiosyncratic characters, including a former ventriloquist who made millions of dollars selling moon lots, Apollo 12 astronaut Alan Bean (the fourth man to walk on the moon) and an astrophysicist professor at the University of British Columbia who,

Simon Ennis intended to make a film on moon ephemera, myth and magic, but a chance meeting with a young advocate of lunar habitation sent him down an entirely different path. Christopher Carson an intelligent young man with a moon obsession is determined to get to his dream place to set up a colony, even if it means he can never return to earth. His passion was irresistible, amusing and pathetic. Carson isn.t joking; he is fixed on achieving his extravagant goal and actively seeks investors. Growing up, the moon was just one of his many obsessions but an all-consuming lunar fixation eventually erased all other pursuits. His parents are patient and encouraging and allow him to remain at home...

Some of the best films of the 2012/2013 calender year from Richard Linklater, Harmony Korine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Bujalski, Jeff Nichols, David Gordon Green, Shane Carruth and Joshua Oppenheimer are among the headliner names for the 2013 edition of the South by Southwest Film Festival. With a little over 100 plus film line-up (a whopping 2000+ titles were submitted), almost 70 are world premieres: there is the highly anticipated sophomore film (that has been on our radar since it first went into production) with M. Blash’s (The Wait), Joe Swanberg who makes SXSW his second home will premiere Drinking Buddies, veteran indie filmmaker John Sayles saddles in with Go For Sisters, and rounding out the Narrative Spotlight section we’ve got The Bounceback from Bryan Poyser, Loves Her Gun from Geoff Marslett along with titles we thought might break into Park City, but found an Austin home instead with Jacob Vaughan’s Milo and...

Lunarcy! is one of those delightful character piece documentaries, akin to where Errol Morris will go down to some swampy Florida town and meet totally unique, bizarre and obsessive individuals and put them on screen for our edification.Director Simon Ennis' interest is in those interested in/obsessed with that giant orb that dominates our night sky. We meet astronauts, entrepreneurs, dreamers and schemers, a series of encounters that add up to quite a fun visit with a subsection of our culture. The film is dominated by one particularly engaging character, Christopher Carson. Part zealot, part Don Quixote, we see him as he tries valiantly to gain support for his plan to become the first permanent resident on the Moon.Of course, Christopher's ideas come across and both naive...

It’s rare that you see the style and sensibilities of a documentarian align so perfectly with his or her subjects the way they do in Simon Ennis’ "Lunarcy!” Following several comedic shorts and one feature, Ennis was originally going to make his first documentary about the generally fluctuating interest in lunar colonization before deciding to zero in on a few keeners. Each interviewee has a unique relationship with the Moon (one even claims ownership), but it’s quickly established that the film’s real star is the quixotic Christopher Carson, a young man who is determined to be the Moon’s first permanent resident. Ennis relishes the taste of every sound bite Carson continuously spews. A clear affinity for these passionate dreamers (Ennis left out all Moon landing naysayers because they're "jerks"), a wry sense of humor and clever use of title cards and stock footage make “Lunarcy!” delightful to behold.

In the last major update for the Toronto International Film Festival 2012 slate, they’ve announced their Canadian features. The line-up includes Sarah Polley’s upcoming documentary Stories We Tell, coming off her Take This Waltz this summer (which also premiered at Tiff). The other major films include two we’ve seen at Cannes, one being Brandon Cronenberg‘s Antiviral, which premiered alongside his father’s Cosmopolis. We disliked it (full review), saying it came off as an “an amateurish, high-budget student film.” The other major title is Xavier Dolan‘s Laurence Anyways, which we loved (full review), calling it a major step forward for the filmmaker. Check out the rest of the titles below, which I’m sure will include many discoveries.

Toronto – On July 31st, the 37th annual Toronto International Film Festival announced its second wave of features and documentaries to be added to this year’s already promising lineup.
The ‘Midnight Madness’ programme, which showcases up and coming genre films, will return for a second year, with The Raid winning the inaugural audience choice award in 2011.
Tiff Programmer Colin Geddes says that the audience should expect “everything from outrageous horror comedies to mock-doc-eco-apocalypse thrillers, featuring trans-dimensional bugs, lewd Catholic priests, meat monsters and dog-snapping psychopaths that will animate the Ryerson Theatre when the clock chimes 12.”
Returning for its fourth edition this year is the ‘City to City’ programme, which puts a spotlight on filmmakers working and living in a certain city, introducing audiences to local independent films from around the world. This year’s city of choice is Mumbai.

Meet Robert R. Mutt (Josh Peace), a simple 30 something-year old from Riverside, Canada who serves as the main character and anti-hero of You Might As Well Live. He is innocent, and somewhat confused. Think of an older Canadian version of Napoleon Dynamite and you have Robert. "I Sell the Dead," Glenn McQuaid's darkly comic horror tale about bumbling grave robbers starring Dominic Monaghan and Ron Perlman, will serve as the opening-night film of the 15th annual Slamdance Film Festival, which runs Jan. 15-23 in Park City.
The fest will screen 29 narrative and documentary features, 20 of which come from the U.S. and 31% of which were directed by women. The 100-film lineup also includes shorts and, for the first time, music videos.
"This year we look forward to increasing our audience through new online formats we believe have the ability, in the long run, to level the playing field for the independent filmmaker," Slamdance president and co-founder Peter Baxter said.
Bringing the fest to a worldwide audience for the first time, the films also will stream live at a new Web site, indieroad.net/slamdance, part of Slamdance's newly formed online venture with Indieroad.net.
