My acting professor told us not to expect to get anywhere in showbiz until we’d given it 10 years. He was right.
It was right at that 10 year mark (when I was 32) that I was able to say goodbye to my day jobs as a makeup counter girl and a social media manager. I could finally pay the rent with my acting and screenwriting gigs alone!
Meanwhile in Chicago, my best friend had a high-powered career in marketing, a husband, a four bedroom house, a 401k, two kids and a black lab.
See, Time is but a construct in L.A. It’s the land of Samuel L. Jackson getting his big break at 45. George Clooney tying the knot for the first time at 53. And congrats to 80-year-old Bobby De Niro on his brand new baby!
Liberating, right? As long as you don’t read the fine print.

There may be another “Dirty Dancing” movie in the works.
Original star Jennifer Grey is collaborating with Lionsgate on an untitled dance movie in which she will star and executive produce.
The studio refuses to comment on whether the project, set in the 1990s, will bring back Grey’s Frances “Baby” Houseman character. “Dirty Dancing” starred Patrick Swayze as Grey’s dance instructor and romantic interest, along with Jerry Orbach and Kelly Bishop as Grey’s parents. The original film was set in 1963 at a Catskills resort.
Megamix’s Jonathan Levine and Gillian Bohrer are shepherding the untitled project with a screenplay by the team of Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis, whose credits include “Five Feet Apart” and “The Curse of La Llorona.”

Exclusive: A new untitled dance movie is taking shape at Lionsgate, set in the 1990s and starring and executive produced by Dirty Dancing Golden Globe nominee Jennifer Grey. While details are being kept quiet, there’s some rumblings that a new Dirty Dancing movie could be in the works. Sources aren’t confirming, but they aren’t putting the idea in a corner either.
Lionsgate holds distribution rights to the Dirty Dancing films, and Grey, of course, played teenager Baby in that movie who falls for her Catskills resort dance instructor, Johnny Castle, played by the late Patrick Swayze. The first movie released in 1987 by Vestron racked up $218 million at the global box office off a $5M production cost, as well as an Oscar and Golden Globe win for the original song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” by Frank Previte, John DeNicola and Donald Markowitz. Good news for fans of the zombie romcom Warm Bodies, the 2013 movie that told the story of R, a zombie played by Nicholas Hoult, who is living a fairly empty life until he encounters a living girl (Teresa Palmer) who catches his eye and makes him feel more alive than he has in ages.

Exclusive: Summit Entertainment has found its director for Insurgent, the follow-up to the upcoming Divergent that will launch a three-pic series based on Veronica Roth’s sci-fi novels. Robert Schwentke, whose credits include the 2010 action comedy Red that also came from Summit, has been tapped for duty, and he will helm the script currently being written by Akiva Goldsman based on a draft by Brian Duffield. In December, Summit had to explain that Divergent director Neil Burger couldn’t helm the second pic because of postproduction on the first movie overlapping preproduction. That second pic has been fast-tracked for next year and has a March 20, 2015 release date already. Divergent, which stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet, comes out March 21. Short Term 12 director discusses adapting the bestselling memoir for a film set to star Jennifer Lawrence.
Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of award-winning indie drama Short Term 12, has revealed details of what looks to be his next project – The Glass Castle.
Earlier this month, rumours began circulating that the up-and-coming filmmaker was in early negotiations to direct the Lionsgate feature, an adaptation of Jeannette Walls’ 2005 bestselling memoir set to star Jennifer Lawrence.
When asked about his next project by ScreenDaily at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival this week, Cretton said: “I’m going to choose my words very carefully because the project I’m working on next isn’t completely finalised yet. But it is much bigger – a studio movie.
