Reminiscent of the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse with its throwback features and faux trailers for non-existent movies, filmmaker and artist Pat Tremblay’s new book Terror in the Ailien Realms: Transdimensional Horror Movie Posters & Their Film Reviews consists of posters for and reviews of movies that have never existed!
An explanation of what this book is all about was provided in a press release (via Variety), “Drawn by the deep nostalgia of roaming video rental stores to find cool movies to watch by judging what its VHS box’s artwork would entice or beguile, filmmaker & artist Pat Tremblay has created a series of horror movie posters with the assistance of AI. He then proposed to talented individuals within the horror movie scene to write imaginary reviews for them. The result is a captivating mixture of styles, ranging from the enigmatic and alluring to the outrageously hilarious. The dimensional...

For at least the past few years, we have covered the Toronto After Dark Film Festival annually. Jeff Konopka attends the festival every year, and he usually brings some really good coverage back with him. I am always jealous when he’s there, because I’m listening to the footage that he has recorded, hanging out in a crowded bar talking with filmmakers, as well as other journalists attending the event. It sounds like a lot of fund, and I’d love to make the trip one year. Some of my favorite recent films were shown at Toronto After Dark. Cheap Thrills, Motivational Growth, The Machine, We Are What We Are, Resolution, The Battery, one of my all-time favorite films, Some Guy Who Kills People, and much, much more. Recently, the first 10 films for the 2014 festival were announced, and among them were some highly anticipated films. I will list them all below,...

Longtime fan Tal Zimerman's new documentary Why Horror? has gotten itself a rather sexy new one-sheet featuring artwork by acclaimed horror artist Gary Pullin. The flick will be haunting Canuck theatres this Halloween via WTFilms.
Why Horror? delves into the psychology of horror around the world. Among the interviewed subjects are names like George Romero and John Carpenter as well as Eli Roth, Alexandre Aja, Alex de la Iglesia, Ben Wheatley, Simon Barrett, Takashi Shimizu, Don Coscarelli, and Nicolas Lopez.
"For us who are fans of horror films and are dedicated to selling them, this is a dream come true," said WTFilms co-founder Gregory Chambet. "It’s fascinating to see that people from any country or gender are horror lovers and that scary movies translate the same everywhere. This is a love letter to genre, and it couldn’t be more fitting for WTFilms."

New non-fiction slate from the genre specialist also features Korea by Yann Moix and Why Horror?.
French genre specialist WTFilms has picked up sales on documentary La Bare, which goes behind the scenes at the famous male stripper club La Bare in Dallas, as part of a move into non-fiction.
WTFilms co-founders Dimitri Stephanides and Gregory Chamet say the move is a natural one for their Paris-based company, which has built up a strong reputation for its genre-based fiction slate in recent years.
“We love genre but want to tackle every aspect of its wide range”, said Stephanides
“Great films like Jodorowsky’s Dune and Room 237 have inspired us. Our name means we want to sell intense, rock ’n’ roll movies, and that is valid for documentaries as well.”

Other websites choose not to post about certain genre Kickstarter projects because of the accessibility it gives to aspiring and even established directors. Some view it as a “handout”, I don’t feel that way. Horror has always felt very communal to me. Fans of the genre stick together through thick or thin. There are success stories and there are also horror stories of the platform and rarely do genre sites post follow up posts about the Kickstarter projects they post after the deadline passes. In this post, I revisit all of the projects we posted on the site (some of them, I personally backed).

Thanks to your votes, the expedition to uncover the psychology of horror in "Why Horror?" won this weekend's Project of the Week contest! Congratulations to "Why Horror" and directors Rob Lindsay and Nicolas Kleiman. The filmmakers will receive a digital distribution consultation from SnagFilms and the film is now officially a candidate for Project of the Month. That winner will be awarded with a consultation from the Sundance Institute. Here's what the project's about: "Why Horror?" is tackling the world of horror from the fan's perspective. Tal Zimerman -- a comedian and horror junkie -- created this documentary to dig deeper into the phenomenon. He has landed some impressive names (John Carpenter, George A. Romero, Eli Roth, Elvis Mitchell, and Steve Niles, among them), all of whom have embraced this project. This little movie is set to go global thanks to the support from the horror community and beyond, and...

People ask me this question all the time - Why Horror? Lord knows I have a myriad of answers for that question, but now a group of filmmakers are looking to answer said question on a much grander scale!
Why Horror? is a Pov documentary following horror fan Tal Zimerman as he looks at the psychology of horror around the world in order to understand why we love to be scared.
In Why Horror?, a new feature-length documentary set to premiere in October 2014, horror journalist Tal Zimerman brings his years of passion and expertise to the big screen. Through examinations of other cultures, the media, science, and the psychology of horror worldwide, Tal’s purpose is simple: to understand why we love to be scared.
“Why do I not only subject myself to multiple shocking sights and sounds, but why do I thrive on it?” asks Tal, an actor/comedian/part-time zombie.

Looking for some geek-friendly crowdfunding projects to support? Then here's a selection of worthy things for your consideration...
Nb: The pitch video for Why Horror contains some gory scenes which some bosses might describe as Not Safe For Work. Just thought we'd let you know.
We may have overshot Halloween by 24 hours, but that hasn't stopped us including a couple of horror-themed projects in this week's crowdfunding selection. And on the topic of horror, there's still just about time (if you've read this early enough on a Friday) to get involved in director Stuart Gordon's Nevermore Kickstarter campaign.
A low-budget film which will see Gordon reunite with the great Jeffrey Combs for an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's immortal poem, Nevermore still has a way to go before it hits its $375,000 goal - but if there's a last-minute swell of support, Nevermore...

You’ve probably noticed that a lot of us at Fsr are horror geeks. Actually, a lot of movie writers on the web in general seem to be fans of the genre. It’s the one type of movie that warrants tons of sites specifically focused on that niche audience, and that’s because there are plenty of films to discuss and plenty more fans to do the discussing. Why that is, I don’t know. I’m one of the few who doesn’t care that much for scary movies — or the many horror films that aren’t even meant to be “scary” — and while I have plenty of theories about why others are obsessed with the genre, I’d love to hear whatever conclusion is made by a new documentary in the works called Why Horror? Probably intended more for you horror geeks than someone like me, but hopefully satisfying to both, the...

We previously featured the teaser trailer for the documentary Why Horror? but now, they need our braaaa…help in trying to complete this feature-length documentary. They have interviews with John Carpenter, Barbara Crampton, Eli Roth, Gary Pullin, George A. Romero and more already in the can. The money they are looking to raise is for film rights to show footage of films discussed in the documentary as well as other necessary things. Tal Zimerman has written for many genre outlets and is a forced to be reckoned with (his poster collection alone makes me weep).
Think of it, when you get asked that question that we all get asked, “Why Horror?” Now, you can answer them with this documentary. However, that will only happen with our help!

One of the many questions you horror fiends might get from the normies is ‘Why do you like horror so much?’ I have run into many times that this question was posed to me. Sometimes I’m at a lost because I figure no matter what I say, it will not vindicate their judgement they are already making of me. Luckily, writer Tal Zimmerman will be investigating what it is about the Horror genre that entices us and why we tend to stick with it.
