Actress Jennifer Lawrence is in demand. With her Mystique role in next month’s “X-Men: First Class” and her anticipated Katniss Everdeen role in “The Hunger Games,” there is no rest for this young actress. Entertainment Weekly has reported Lawrence will play a young Southern mother in “Sweet Tea.” The film will be a directorial debut for veteran actress Sissy Spacek. “It’s a drama but it’s kind of a down south love story drama,” she told EW. “About a mother who gets married young and meets another man and starts thinking that maybe she made a mistake.” “Sweet Tea” will start production a week or two after the wrap of Gary Ross’ “The Hunger Games.” The anticipated Ross-directed film started filming last week in North Carolina. The “Sweet Tea” script was written by C. Gaby Mitchell, who wrote 2006’s “Blood Diamond.” “I was like damnnnnnn,” she said. “When...

From a teenage assassin in "The Hunger Games", Jennifer Lawrence jumps in age in Sissy Spacek's "Sweet Tea". In the down south love story drama, the 20-year-old is to play a young Southern mother who "gets married young and meets another man and starts thinking that maybe she made a mistake."
This would be Spacek's directorial debut. Speaking of working with the Oscar winner, Lawrence told EW, "Sissy is nice, normal, just a mom," she said, "and a great director too." What attracted Lawrence to "Sweet Tea" is also the script which is written by "Blood Diamond" scribe, C. Gaby Mitchell.
Lawrence, who is one of the most demanded actress nowadays, is to start filming the movie one or two weeks after "Hunger Games" wraps up. "Right after!" Lawrence said. "I was like damnnnnnn. When I read the script and I loved it I was like 'Ohhhhh! Because I...

Our heads have been spinning lately with all of the newly-announced projects presented at Cannes. It's hard to keep up. But, here is a glimpse at a few interesting and/or noteworthy projects that were recently added to IMDbPro's database of development titles this week:
Sweat Tea – Sissy Spacek doesn’t have time to worry about a planned Carrie remake, the erstwhile prom queen is set to make her directorial debut with this family drama set in the deep south during the Great Depression. Get Low scribe C. Gaby Mitchell will adapt the screenplay from a novel written by Julia Oliver.
Father Daughter Time – Matt Damon’s set to step behind the camera, too, in this Warner Bros. project written by Matthew Aldrich. Damon also stars as a dad who drags his daughter along a crime spree that spans across three state lines.
The Idolmaker – Completing the trifecta of first time thesps-turned-directors is Ryan Gosling. Directing his first feature—a remake of Taylor Hackford’s 1980 biopic of early rock ‘n’ roll era producer Bob Marcucci, Gosling is also set to star in the film for MGM.
Blind – Uma Thurman and Clive Owen team up in this romantic drama written by Norman Mailer’s son, John Buffalo Mailer. Mark Damon produces the film about a blind writer who hooks up with a married woman.
Mr. Murder Is Dead – Zachary Quinto and Neal Dodson will produce this crime thriller based on Victor Quinaz’s graphic novel via their Before the Door Pictures. Film centers on a retired cop investigating the death of his former nemesis.
Go the F--k to Sleep – We could hardly believe the children’s book that inspired this pic was for real. But topping Amazon’s bestsellers list (before its publication date!) is no joke. If the movie lives up to the hype and wins over parents with a dark sense of humor, then Fox 2000 will have the last laugh. Just, please don’t change the title.

Last year, noticing that studios throughout Hollywood were posting the screenplays for their “Oscar movies” online for free, I compiled the download links for every screenplay I could find and posted them to this site. The article was a hit, many of the screenplays were downloaded, and things went quiet…until a few months ago, when the page started getting a lot of traffic again, no doubt thanks to the start of this year’s Oscar season.
The problem was, a lot of those studio sites from last year have been taken down, so if, say, you try to click the link to download the Avatar script, you get an ugly Not Found error. I won’t make that same mistake again: this year, I’ve downloaded all the new screenplays and stored them here, so the links will always work.

I suppose Aaron Schneider knows a thing or two about how to make a cold gray stark wintry movie look even more Great Depression-y: washing out the colors, tweeding everyone up, getting lots of sad browns and golds on the screen. Schneider’s a cinematographer, see, making his feature debut as a director with Get Low (though did win an Oscar for his 2003 just-short-of-feature-length short “Two Soldiers”), and if there’s something Get Low has in spades, it’s atmosphere: the film is visually cold and spare, and agreeably so, while at the same time it’s emotionally warm and expressive. The look comes via cinematographer David Boyd, who also shot the Depression-set Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, as well as Joss Whedon’s short-lived TV series Firefly, which had a similar palette. The story comes via screenwriters Chris Provenzano (TV’s Mad Men), C. Gaby Mitchell (Blood Diamond), and Scott Seeke,...

The best and worst thing about Get Low is that it’s all about the performances. The plot and the directing are nothing special. The characters seem to be cut-and-paste clichés of past characters who the two lead actors have often portrayed in the past. The only thing that really makes this worth the trip to the theater is the top-notch performances by Robert Duvall and Bill Murray. In this case, that’s just enough.
Director Aaron Schneider was very smart to cast Robert Duvall in the main role. Duvall is one of the most iconic and talented actors working today. He can take even a poorly written role and make it credible. The character of Felix Bush in Get Low needs an actor like Duvall to make it work. Bush is a cross between an old, clichéd movie Hillbilly and some sort of folk tale image like Rip Van Winkle.

Set in 1930s Tennessee, Get Low tells the tale of a crotchety old hermit named Felix Bush (Duvall), who has created his own literal and figurative prison in the woods for a horrible incident that occurred 40 years prior. In the nearby town, stories and urban legends of Felix run rampant, as everyone both fears and hates him. Chicago – What could possibly drive a man into such a deep pit of despair that he would choose to break from society and take on the life of a hermit? The mystery of such a decision is the driving force behind Aaron Schneider’s “Get Low,” a based-on-a-true-story drama that has already earned Oscar buzz for star Rubert Duvall and praise for co-stars Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek, Lucas Black, and Bill Cobbs.

“Get Low” is the tale of a man reaching for one final change at forgiveness, redemption, and confession before he “got low” six feet underground. Driven by one of the year’s best performances by one of the best actors that ever lived, “Get Low” casts a light into a life lived in darkness. Is there anything you can dream up that would be so horrible that you would leave everything behind, make a mule your only companion,...

Some stories take their time in the telling. Aaron Schneider, a cinematographer turned director, who won an Academy Award for his short film, decided that for his feature film debut, he'd pack a Southern gothic tale with more stars than there are sky. The end result is Get Low, a powerful folktale about a lonely hermit who decides to throw himself a funeral party so he can hear all the stories people are telling about him while he's still alive. It's a pretty simple story, but it's packed with so much pure acting, it's going to suck you in and never let go. Pound for pound, I have yet this year to see performances that can match up with the sheer volume and assuredness of the four leads in this film. Like a skilled gourmet, Schneider knows that when your ingredients are of this quality, you don't need to do...

Robert Duvall in Get Low
Photo: Sony Pictures Classics Set in the late 1930s, Get Low is based on an American folk tale, which is itself based on the true story of a hermit named Felix "Bush" that decides to throw himself a funeral party while he's still alive just "to hear what the preacher had to say about [him]." Screenwriter Chris Provenzano ("Mad Men"), with co-writer C. Gaby Mitchell (Blood Diamond), took that idea and went a bit further with it, searching for Felix's motivation. Why would someone hide themselves away for 40 years only to come out of hiding for a funeral party? Get Low has those answers and, thanks to sensational performances, tells one hell of a story.

Release Date: July 30 Director: Aaron Schneider Writers: Chris Provenzano, C. Gaby Mitchell Cinematographer: David Boyd Starring: Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, Bill Murray, Lucas Black Studio: Sony Pictures Classics A forgettable fable Get Low, a glacially-paced portrait of real-life Southern boogeyman Felix “Bush” Breazeale, does little to broaden the scope of American mythology set to celluloid. Robert Duvall stars as the woods-secluded protagonist, who stages a funeral for himself before he’s dead, inviting anyone who’s willing to recount one of the fantastical, widely-told yarns about his life. Even with this rich premise, Get Low’s linear narrative is far too bare-bones...

Get Low, opening Friday (7/30/10) in limited release, is the kind of understated comedy that they don't seem to make very often, for fear the audience won't have the patience (and because the film's stars are almost all candidates for Aarp membership). But this film, directed by former cinematographer Aaron Schneider from a script by Chris Provenzano and C. Gaby Mitchell, is exactly the kind of smart, low-key and heartfelt film we need far more of. Achieving that mix is not as easy as it looks, of course, but that's the beauty of it. The invaluable Robert Duvall plays Felix Bush, a notorious hermit in 1930s Tennessee. Hairy, unkempt and antisocial, he is a local legend in his little town, with a variety of boogie-man-type tales associated with him -- including one that he's a murderer. Still, there are very few people...

The directorial debut of cinematographer Aaron Schneider is as breezily gentle as its quaint 1930s Appalachian setting and crackly bluegrass score. The ever-so-slight story, in which a Tennessee backwoods hermit (Robert Duvall) arranges his own “funeral party,” takes awhile to get moving; at times, the movie is molasses-paced, and the potential loopy energy of the premise begins to flag.
But generally, “Get Low” ambles along gracefully, thanks to Duvall's quietly commanding performance, stellar supporting work from Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek and Lucas Black, and a winning screenplay by Chris Provenzano and C. Gaby Mitchell. If the outrageousness of its plot categorizes “Get Low” as somewhat of a one-joke farce, it's nonetheless one of the most relaxed, low-key farces of recent memory.
The film opens with a faraway shot of a country house burning down, and several flaming persons emerging from it. Though there's no narrative explanation,...

Check out new videos from Sony Pictures Classics' "Get Low" with feedback from Robert Duvall, Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek and others as well as new film clips. The indie flick is helmed by Aaron Schneider, opens on July 30th. Schneider wrote the screenplay alongside C. Gaby Mitchell and Chris Provenzano. The film premiered at last year's Toronto International Film Festival and was seen at this year's Sundance Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival among others. For years, townsfolk have been terrified of the backwoods recluse known as Felix Bush (Robert Duvall). People say he‘s done all manner of unspeakable things -- that he‘s killed in cold blood; that he‘s in league with the Devil; that he has strange powers -- and they avoid him like the plague. Then, one day, Felix rides to town with a shotgun and a wad of cash, saying he wants to buy a funeral.

Do you want your good news first or your bad news first?"Bad" might be a little harsh, espeically since we're judging these films on their trailers. Also, the debate is still out as to if I'm an idiot or not. It's subjective. The subjectively lesser of these two films is "Beastly" beased on the novel by Alex Finn and adapted for the screen / directed by Daniel Barnz (he pulled the same two duties on Phoebe in Wonderland 2 years ago).Alex Pettyfer plays Kyle, a self-described rich, popular and good-looking kid. Kyle goes around being a jackass to everyone, probably including Vanessa Hudgens' Lindy. Then a "witch" named Kendra (played by an eyebrow-less Mary-Kate Olsen) pulls the old "beauty and the beast" on him and makes him look like Weapon X from "Wolverine" mixed with the guy from the video-game Prototype. He hires a tutor played by Neil Patrick Harris,...

The trailer for Get Low, which stars Robert Duvall as a recluse who comes out of 40 years of seclusion to ask a funeral home owner (Bill Murray) to plan him a living funeral, gets even more interesting when you find out it's loosely based on a true story. I didn't know about the real Felix "Bush" Breazeale until I read the Sony Picture Classics production notes: "Born into a prominent Southern family, he was nevertheless renown for his wild and offbeat ways. For years, Felix famously dwelled completely alone, refusing all company save for his beloved mule, in the deep,...

Now, the festival is getting a bit more star-heavy, as films starring such actors as Colin Farrell, Robert Duvall, Casey Affleck, and even Jessica Alba have joined the list of those titles appearing at the fest. All of these films are now coming to the festival this year, as well as the world premiere of Shrek Forever After.

Edward Burns, Chuck Workman and Alex Gibney will all unveil the world premieres of their newest films at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival, running from Apr. 21-May 2 in lower Manhattan.

The South by Southwest Film Festival announced its 2010 feature line-up Wednesday night, and I couldn’t be more excited. The nine day event starts March 12, 2010 here in Austin, Texas, and I’ll be covering as much as I can from start to finish. Though, if it’s anything like last year, I’ll be asleep on my feet by the end of it.
The 2010 list includes 119 films (55 world premieres), but here are a few notables: The previously announced Kick-Ass will start the festivities. Elektra Luxx, the sequel to the underseen comedy Women in Trouble, starring Carla Gugino, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and too many more to name. Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass in which Edward Norton plays identical twins. A documentary titled People vs. George Lucas that I will be seeing. Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs. Plus the “SNL” spin-off movie MacGruber in its world premiere, possibly before the MacGyver creator shuts it down.

Less than a week worth of recovering from the Sundance Film Festival, and we are already looking forward to our next, big film fest coverage. That would be the South by Southwest Film Festival held annually in Austin, Texas. Last year, Scott and I brought you all kinds of coverage from the Lone Star State, and this year doesn’t look to be much different.
With that, the announcement came last night of the feature films that will be playing at the SXSW Film Festival. Previous announcement were already made about films like Cold Weather, Electra Luxx, Hubble 3D, Lemmy, Saturday Night, and The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights making their debut. Kick-ass was recently announced as the opening night film, as well.
Among the other films being presented this year are some Sundance darlings, a few, highly anticipated premieres, and MacGruber.

I was so excited at seeing the SXSW line up last night that I completely forgot to post it and started searching the interwebs for cool content to go with it. Oops. Yes, I wish I was there but alas, it wasn’t mean to be (though don’t despair. We’ll be bringing you wicked awesome coverage).
But enough rambling, you want to know what’s all playing. Well, for a start there’s the much anticipated McGruber (trailer), the Duplass’ semi-mainstream comedy Cyrus, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs (trailer, review), Daniel Stamm’s horror flick Cotton and that’s on top of the previously announced titles which include Electra Luxx (Carla Gugino as a pregnant porn star? Bring. It. On.) and Kick-Ass (trailer). That’s already a great line-up but dear me, some of the other titles are pretty awesome too.

Late yesterday the SXSW Fim Festival, which runs from March 12-20 in Austin, TX, announced the full lineup of films that will be screening at this year’s event. And baby, it’s quite a list. Mixing big name films with intimate indie gems, the sheer number of films and the vast array of talented filmmakers is sure to be a hit with attendees and critics alike.
This lineup includes premieres of studio films such as Universal’s MacGruber, Lionsgate’s teen superhero actioneer Kick-Ass and smaller films like Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, Michel Gondry’s The Thorn in the Heart and Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. With so many films to watch, it will be very difficult to find time to seem them all during the events nine days. But hell, we’re going to try.

“Get Low” Synopsis: For the past forty years, Felix Bush (Robert Duvall) has lived as a hermit deep in the Tennessee woods. His clothes tattered, his manner rough and his expressions buried behind a massive white beard, he’s an unnerving figure when he stalks into town with his mule, shotgun in hand. Some say he’s killed men with his bare hands.
One day Bush walks into the local funeral parlour and announces to Frank Quinn (Bill Murray), “‘Bout time for me to get low. Down to business. I need a funeral.” More importantly, he wants a funeral party,...

Tons of Park City alumni are bringing their latest films, but I'm a bit surprised that March-pegged releases of The Weinstein's All Good Things and Focus Features' Greenberg aren't getting a Park City push. Instead, as expected, Sony Pictures Classics will show up and they get to showcase Get Low and A Prophet (Spotlight section) once again, and they'll preem Holofcener's Please Give. Overture will introduce Philip Seymour Hoffman's directing debut (Jack Goes Boating) and Fox Searchlight will preem Duplass Bros.' untitled comedy, which I'm calling Center of Attention - because its a great title considering the subject matter. - With the biggie announcements in the Premieres sections, I think I'm officially batting .300 with my predictions.
