Writers Guild of America East announced Thursday that Lisa Takeuchi Cullen has officially been elected as its new president after running unopposed to succeed outgoing president Michael Winship.
Takeuchi Cullen is now the third woman and the first person of color to be elected president of WGA East. Secretary-treasurer Christopher Kyle will continue in the same position after also running unopposed.
“I am honored to become the next president of the Writers Guild of America East. Even when we negotiate a fair deal with the Hollywood studios — and it is a when, not an if — I know the fight is not over,” Takeuchi Cullen said in a statement. “The fight continues for all of our members, TV and screenwriters as well as journalists and podcasters, to achieve compensation commensurate to the value of our important work. Sara David, running unopposed, has been elected vice president of the WGA East representing online media members, and Kathy McGee beat two other candidates to become vice president representing members working in the broadcast/cable/streaming news sector.
David, a digital editor at Paramount+/Viacom CBS for unscripted series, currently serves on the WGA East Council, the guild’s governing body. McGee, a news writer at Wcbs New York City, has served on the guild’s Council and on its Committee for Inclusion and Equity.
This is the guild’s first election since its members voted overwhelmingly in June to amend the Wgae constitution and restructure the guild to ensure a more “balanced representation” among its three work sectors: film/television/streaming, broadcast/cable/streaming news, and online media. Election of the guild’s president, secretary-treasurer and vice president representing the film/TV/streaming sector will be held next year.

Next year’s negotiations for a new WGA film and TV contract – and a possible writers’ strike – were front and center in campaign statements posted by several candidates in the WGA East’s ongoing Council elections. The WGA’s current contract, known as the Minimum Basic Agreement (Mba), expires on May 1, 2023.
This is the guild’s first election since its members voted overwhelmingly in June to restructure the guild to ensure a more “balanced representation” among its three newly-designated work sectors: film/television/streaming, broadcast/cable/streaming news and online media.
In one of only two contested races, seven candidates – including six incumbents – are vying for six seats on the Council representing the film/TV/streaming work sector. Here are excerpts from their campaign statements:

The WGA East has unveiled the candidates for its upcoming election of 20 council seats, which will mark the guild’s first vote since it was restructured around three distinct work sectors.
The Sept. 15 election will divide governance of the guild among 12 members from the Film/TV/Streaming sector representing writers of narrative scripted movies and TV series; five from the Online Media sector covering digital news and media writers; and three from the Broadcast/Cable/Streaming sector covering broadcast and cable news programming.
The governing body for the Writers Guild of America East also includes five officer positions: president, secretary-treasurer and three vice presidents, representing one from each work sector. Online and mail-in voting begins Sept. 1 and ends Sept. 15 at 5 p.m. Et.
The election follows the compromise agreement reached in April to address the WGA East’s rapid growth in recent years through its success in organizing digital media and digital news operations.

Former Writers Guild of America East president Michael Winship has been re-elected to the guild’s governing council as a freelance rep along with four other incumbents: Monica Lee Bellais, Lisa Takeuchi Cullen, Kaitlin Fontana and A.M. Homes.
Gina Gionfriddo and Eric Saleh were also elected to open freelance seats. Jason Kim and Benjamin Rosenblum were also seeking freelance seats. Incumbents Gail Lee, Ashley Feinberg and Kelly Stout were re-elected to staff seats of the council.
The seats are for two-year terms. Freelance members work in screen, television and new media, and staff members work in television, radio/audio and digital news shops under the guild’s jurisdiction. New York-based digital news shops have boosted the membership of the WGA East significantly by more than 2,000 with unionization victories in recent years with Vox Media, Onion Inc., HuffPost, Vice, the Intercept, ThinkProgress, MTV News, Salon and Slate.
Votes were cast by 12.09% of the 6,208 eligible voters.

Women writers carried the day in the WGA East’s Council elections, winning nine of the ten seats up for grabs. The only man to win a seat was former WGA East president Michael Winship. It was also a good day for incumbents, who won eight of the ten contests. Votes were cast by just over 12% of the guild’s 6,208 eligible members. The Wgae does not release numerical voting results. All ten of the winning candidates will serve two-year terms.
Incumbents Gail Lee, Ashley Feinberg and Kelly Stout were elected to the three seats representing staff writers who work in television, radio/audio and digital news shops.
Newcomers Gina Gionfriddo and Erica Saleh were elected to seats representing freelance writers who work in film, television and new media. In addition to Winship, the other four freelance incumbents returned to office are Monica Lee Bellais, Lisa Takeuchi Cullen, Kaitlin Fontana and A.M. Homes.

Beau Willimon will run unopposed for reelection as president of the WGA East. It’s the second time the House of Cards creator has run unopposed for president – the first time was when he was first elected in 2017. Only this time, he’ll be running unopposed in the middle of the WGA East and West’s contentious battle with Hollywood’s talent agencies. Voting online and by mail will begin on August 28.
Bob Schneider, the WGA East’s incumbent secretary-treasurer, will also be running unopposed, although Kathy McGee and Phil Pilato will be vying to become the guild’s next vice president. Jeremy Pikser, the guild’s current vp, is not seeking reelection.

Beau Willimon, the playwright and showrunner who launched Netflix’s “House of Cards,” is running unopposed for re-election to a two-year term as president of the Writers Guild of America East.
Willimon also ran unopposed in 2017 to succeed Michael Winship. The WGA East announced a total of 24 candidates Thursday for its top officer posts and Council seats. Results will be announced Sept. 20.
The announcement comes with the WGA locked in a heated standoff with Hollywood agents over the issues of how agents represent WGA members. The guild required on April 13 that members fire their agents if the agents had not signed a Code of Conduct, which bans agents from taking packaging fees and prohibits agencies from owning production affiliates.

Updated with Vice statement: More than 75 current and former writers for HBO have signed a petition calling on Vice Media “to sign a strong union contract” with the WGA. The list includes several high-profile scribes including John Oliver, David Simon, Warren Leight, Tom Fontana, Eric Overmyer and Jesse Armstrong.
Read the petition and its signatories below.
Editorial staffers at Vice overwhelmingly ratified their first contract with WGA East in April 2016, a three-year deal that was retroactive to January 1 that year.
“This petition shows what WGA East solidarity looks like,” the guild said in a statement. “Just as our members who craft shows for HBO are expressing support for their brothers and sisters at Vice, the Wgae-represented employees in all parts of Vice are supporting each other in the quest for a good contract. TNT’s “The Alienist” follows the investigation into a series of grisly murders that haunt a team of investigators. In that sense it’s not unlike HBO’s anthology “True Detective.” The first season of that drama won 5 Emmys out of 12 nominations in 2014, including one for Cary Joji Fukunaga‘s direction. Now Fukunaga is an executive producer and writer for “The Alienist,” so will he return to the Emmy race? If so he’ll be migrating to new categories: his season of “True Detective” was entered as a drama at the Emmys, but “The Alienist” is expected to compete as a limited series.
Apart from Fukunaga’s participation and similarities in tone, “The Alienist” is a quite different series, but it might appeal to many of the same television academy members who voted for “True Detective” or other crime series like “Boardwalk Empire” and “The Night Of.” Where season one...

The most fascinating character in Gina Gionfriddo’s new play, “Can You Forgive Her?,” doesn’t show up until about two-thirds of the way through. One could debate over whether Gionfriddo has written a great role in David, who’s paying to keep one woman while living with another woman he never sleeps with (except for appearances), or if the magnificent actor Frank Wood just makes him look great. Judging from the Off Broadway production that opened Tuesday at the Vineyard Theatre, it’s no doubt an inspired combination of the two. Wood brings an off-center gravitas to a shaggy-dog story desperately in.

It has been a busy year for actress-director-author Amber Tamblyn. She’s released her feature directorial debut, is starring in a play and just gave birth to her first child.
At 34, Tamblyn is more than used to juggling a personal life and a professional one. Spike Jonze’s philosophical sci-fi love story Her, and Billy Ray’s harrowing true-life hostage saga Captain Phillips earned best original and adapted screenplays, respectively, from the Writers Guild Awards on Saturday.
In the original category, Her was facing its four rivals for the Oscar: American Hustle, Blue Jasmine, Dallas Buyers Club, and Nebraska, so its victory can be seen as a strong harbinger of where the Academy Award could go on March 2. In anecdotal sampling of Academy members, EW’s Prize Fighter has also determined that Her is far and away the front-runner for this category.

Tonight, the Writers Guild of America presented their awards for excellence in film and television for 2013. All eyes were on their top two categories, Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay, and while the former went to Spike Jonze’s incredible Her as expected, the latter went to Billy Ray’s Captain Phillips, which was completely out of the blue.
Her was widely expected to win due to its immense popularity throughout awards season, taking 20 screenplay wins from groups such as the HFPA and Bfca. However, Captain Phillips was a complete surprise given that it had not managed to win a single screenplay award prior to tonight, but as I’ve said before, it was going to be hard to tell which nominee was the favorite given the fact that the disqualified 12 Years a Slave has been the clear frontrunner throughout the season. Ayad Akhtar’s play “Disgraced" -- which examines the struggle of a Pakistani-American corporate lawyer to reconcile his heritage with his ambition -- won this year's Pulitzer Prize for Drama. After premiering at Chicago’s American Theater Company, the play ran off-Broadway last fall in the smallest of the three theaters at Lincoln Center. The Gotham production starred "Daily Show" contributor Aasif Mandvi as the legal eagle and Heidi Armbruster as his wife, an artist who uses Islamic imagery in her work. One of the other finalists -- Amy Herzog’s domestic drama “4,000 Miles” -- also played at Lct while Gina Gionfriddo’s wry comedy “Rapture, Blister, Burn,” debuted at another off-Broadway house, Playwrights Horizons. Rapture, Blister, Burn (at Playwrights Horizons through July 1)The topography of postfeminism is treacherous, cratered with gaping generalizations, dangerous reductions, half-baked sociobiology, and old-fashioned shame. Thank the goddess, then, for Gina Gionfriddo (Becky Shaw, After Ashley), who has a habit of charging in with absolutely no regard for her own safety or that of her audience. Rapture, Blister, Burn, a fiercely funny, rapidly unspooling chaos of warring sexual and romantic ideals, might be her most gleefully heedless and hilariously uncalculated foray into the un-politically-correct thus far. “You want to fall back on your flawed, tired marriage? Join the fucking club!” spits Catherine (Amy Brenneman), a Gen-x Camille Paglia, “sexy scholar,” and TV talking head. Her specialties: porn, slasher flicks, and progressive revisitations of Phyllis Schlafly. (Yeah, she’s done Real Time.) Her theories on love, sex, marriage, and gender roles range from the porno-libertarian to the meta-reactionary, and none is...

Tony Award voters may have been falling slowly for the musical Once, which won eight prizes (including Best Musical), but theater fans at home weren’t quite as enthused. Despite the efforts of Neil Patrick Harris and special award winner Hugh Jackman, the CBS telecast posted its worst ratings ever. In the days that followed, a bunch of Broadway shows announced plans to close: Anything Goes (Aug. 5), Godspell (June 24), The Lyons (July 1), and A Streetcar Named Desire (July 22). Three other new productions — Don’t Dress for Dinner, Other Desert Cities (featuring Tony winner Judith Light), and Venus in Fur (starring...

"It's just so joyous for me not to be playing a mother because so much of my endeavors involve mothering," says Amy Brenneman. "What I really like is that this is not a fertility play. Catherine is not longing for a baby. She is longing for a home. This play has less to do with society and laws and more to do with biology and age."The play in question is Gina Gionfriddo's "Rapture, Blister, Burn," now running at Playwright's Horizon. The topical drama, with lots of comic one-liners, centers on a rock star academic (Brenneman) who is single and childless and her grad school friend Gwen (Kellie Overbey), a stay-at-home wife and mother. Both women believe they've made the wrong choices and engage in a risky experiment in an effort to redefine their lives.Brenneman admits she relates to Catherine, specifically being told "she's too much," or guilty of "thinking too.
