Twenty-five years ago, I — and millions of Hindi film fans around the world — saw our first Karan Johar movie. “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” — which currently holds the top spot in IndieWire’s list of the best rom-coms on Netflix — was a superhit and instant classic, a story of love and friendship that stood the test of time and charms audiences to this day.
Johar’s latest, “Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani,” (“Rocky and Rani’s Love Story”) written by Shashank Khaitan, is the kind of Bollywood bliss audiences have been craving. It’s entertaining but not dependent on action and violence. It’s star-studded but with genuinely talented actors, not just airbrushed beauty and family names. It’s modern but not Western. It’s family-oriented but not pedantic.
And it’s just a damn good time.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani
Staring Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi
Directed by Karan Johar
Wait! Do we see an upsurge in the number of men joining Kathak classes after Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani? Among the many things that writers Sumit Roy, Shashank Khaitan and Ishita Moitra tells us in this kaleidoscopic view of life on Malamaal Hill, is that it’s okay for men to adopt traditionally female roles.
And listen, if you like Kathak dancing it doesn’t mean you are effeminate or gay. Tota Roy Chowdhury converts the boorish Punjabi loutish epitome of toxic masculinity Rocky, played with lipsmacking relish by Ranveer Singh. Before we know it the two men are dancing together to Sanjay Bhansali’s ‘Dola re dola re’ without the being the least conscious of the feminine expressions. Move over Aishwarya, Madhuri…

Mumbai, July 7 (Ians): Film: 72 Hoorain. Duration: 80 minutes
Cast: Pavan Malhotra, Aamir Bashir, Saru Maini, Rasheed Naz, Ashok Pathak and Namrata Dixit. Director: Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan
Ians Rating: ****
India is one of those countries in the world that is among the worst sufferers of terrorism spread in the name of religion. And everyone knows how religious fanaticism is being used to burn the social fabric of the country.
There have been films that showcase how terrorism deeply impacts our day-to-day life, but there are hardly any films that daringly question the practice of brainwashing youth into becoming terrorists and killing innocent people in the name of religion.
Director Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan’s ’72 Hoorain’ exposes the dirty game to trick people into becoming terrorists and turning them into killing machines.

National Award-winning filmmaker Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan’s ‘72 Hoorain’ trailer is all about radicalisation, terrorism and religious fundamentalism, which has now got into a controversy.
Produced by Ashoke Pandit, the film landed in soup after its teaser was released on June 4. It has reportedly been denied certification by the censor board.
The over two-minutes long clip shows a satirical take on terrorism. It begins with introducing late Pakistani actor Rasheed Naz a maulvi, who talks about 72 Hoorain. Pavan Malhotra plays Hakim and Aamir Bashir essays Bilal boasting of the leisure and 72 virgins in heaven only granted to the true followers of religion.
The two are on top of a building talking about life post death. The video swiftly moves to visuals of bomb blasts and terrorist attacks. It ends with two bodies of terrorists being thrown into the water.
‘72 Hoorain’ is scheduled to release on July 7.

Sydney, June 11 (Ians) These days Jane Campion — Palme d’Or and Oscar-winning film director — is celebrated for a vein of heartfelt cinema that is aching and quirky, rather than gushing, writes ‘Variety’.
She’s also an intelligent and determined female pioneer who has had to struggle for her present standing in a male-dominated industry.
The Sydney Film Festival this week is showcasing and contextualising Campion’s body of work, ‘Variety’ reports. Its screening programme includes all nine of her feature films, from “Two Friends” to “The Power of the Dog”, and a selection of her shorts.
“For our 70th edition, we wanted to present a retrospective commensurate with the milestone, reflecting the audacious and boundary pushing filmmaking synonymous with our festival and region. There was no one more appropriate than Jane Campion,” said Sff Director Nashen Moodley in notes ahead of the event.

Ott platforms have not just changed the rules of the entertainment market, they have given, literally, a second life to Bollywood stars who had faded away from the public eye for quite some time. Of late, a number of senior actors, who had virtually retired from the industry or had limited theatrical releases, are now being reinvented and getting a hugely positive response to their work, courtesy of streaming platforms.
Here’s a list of nine actors who are back in the reckoning in their second innings because of Ott:
Harman Baweja
The actor made his debut with the 2008 release “Love Story 2050”, directed by his father Harry Baweja, and charmed the audience with his dancing skills (and little else!), but he was dismissed by all as the poor man’s Hrithik Roshan.

Talking about this, Nimrat said: “Most of the scenes that I have with the kids are nice and light. Actress Nimrat Kaur, who is set to headline the Ott series ‘School Of Lies’, has spilled the beans on her admiration for her director and what made her say yes to streaming series.
The show came to her when she was looking for something diametrically opposite but she couldn’t resist giving her nod to the show after being enticed by its writing.
Talking about the show, Nimrat said, “While I was personally looking for something light, when ‘School of Lies’ came to me, there was something about the subject that drew me towards it. As was the tendency in the last years, South Indian films continued to dominate the box office in 2022, with “Rrr” and “Vikram” being some of the highlights, and the former actually getting international recognition, as the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu highlights. In another international success for Indian cinema, Pan Nalin’s “Last Film Show” was shortlisted for the Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category, while Pan Nalin documentary “All That Breathes” won the Grand Jury Prize in World Cinema Documentary Competition in Sundance, before it was also shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature for the 95th Academy Awards. If you add to all these the fact that local movies seem to find more space in international festivals, it seems that finally Indian movies are getting the recognition they deserve. The feat can be attributed to both an “opening” from the West towards...

Second feature for Kashmiri Aamir Bashir, “The Winter Within” sheds a horrifying but also quite realistic light on the circumstances of people living in the particular area, where small and big skirmishes and terrorist activities occur frequently due to the long conflict between India and Pakistan, as well as the border dispute with China.
The Winter Within Screened at Busan International Film Festival
As the film begins, Nargis is working as domestic help for a rich household. She is not particularly good at her job, since her actual purpose of being in the area is to find what happened to her husband Manzoor, who was arrested after he joined the armed rebellion. A local policeman asks for money for information, but he proves a fraud, while, as soon as her employer learns that her husband is a militant, she fires her. Thus begins the second part of the movie, with...

Having worked in a bookstore for much of my university life, I was definitely aware that Vikram Seth’s “A Suitable Boy” was something special. But it did not intrigue me enough to delve into the 1500 pages long acclaimed novel. So, when I heard about the BBC mini-series, I was quite excited to find out what the fuss was all about. The excitement grew even more when Mira Nair’s name was mentioned. A maker par excellence, I was really keen to see her flaunt her talent in this long film format. And that she did. The fact that A Suitable Boy still manages to stay with you long after the 6th and final episode concludes, despite its glaring flaws is a huge compliment to the maker.
What are those glaring flaws you ask? Well, on a key aspect of a piece of cinema, language. Set in 50s India, the characters speak English.

Review While Tabu and Ishaan Khatter shine in their respective roles, the English dialogue sticks out as unpalatable.Geetika MantriScreenshot/NetflixIndian parents’ desire to find a suitable match for their children is the stuff of legends – you’ll find references in folklore and mythical tales, in documented history, in fiction and in reality. So when you hear the phrase A Suitable Boy, it’s not hard to imagine what it will entail. In this case, the plot is premised on a widowed woman determined to find a match for her young daughter. Based on Vikram Seth’s massive novel, the BBC adaptation of A Suitable Boy, directed by Mira Nair and written by Andrew Davies, released on Netflix on Friday. With a runtime of six hours split into six episodes, the series follows Lata Mehra (Tanya Maniktala), a young English literature student in the fictional town of Brahmpur, whose mother,...

One of two things happen when Mira Nair tries making an Indian film in India. She crafts a story that is beautifully authentic and inspired by India that is (think Salaam Bombay! or Monsoon Wedding). Or, she tries recreating an India that was, in which case the outcome is beautifully plastic (think Kama Sutra).
Mira Nair's new web series talks of an India that was. The show diligently tries to belong to the former lot, but tends to gravitate to the second category.
Maybe it was the challenge of adapting Vikram Seth's book of the same name. A massive work of fiction comprising nearly six lakh words would seem difficult to capture in six episodes.
Or maybe, just as it was blatant in the case of Kama Sutra, Nair was out making an Indian film in India for the West.
The trouble with A Suitable Boy is despite so much story to tell,...

Snapshot Review: Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare
Directed by Alankrita Shrivastava
Starring: Konkana Sen Sharma and Bhumi Pednekar
Slightly cluttered with notable agendas that are left unexplored, but Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare still manages to impress because:
1. #womentellingwomensstories – Alankrita Shrivastava is such a keen observer of the plight of women. She doesn’t cover the big-ticket agenda times that we all bang on about, she explores those less obvious issues that many would be oblivious to because it’s so ingrained in our daily lives that we women ourself may not recognise it.
2. The leadings ladies Konkona sen Sharma and Bhumi Pednekar are just phenomenal!
I agree with @su4ita, this has to be Bhumi Pednekar best work!
Also, how more phenomenal can Konkona get?!
3. The supporting cast is just as outstanding, consisting of Aamir Bashir, Vikrant Massey, Karan Kumdra, Kubra Sait
Definitely check this one out!

Starring Konkona Sen Sharma, Bhumi Pednekar, Aamir Bashir, Vikrant Massey, Karan Kumdra
Directed by Alankrita Shrivastava
Post-feminist cinema in India suffers from a post-coital fatigue. It goes around and around wearing the same heart on the sleeve, same save-woman-save-the-planet logo on the teeshirt, same obsession with caddish husbands and rebellious wives, sex-seeking selfish boyfriends, etc etc.
Alankrita Shrivastava’s third feature film has one of both, a caddish husband and a selfish boyfriend. There is a power-driven inner-driven intensity about Alankrita’s storytelling which sucks us into its characters’ famished world of inchoate desires.
Sexual fulfillment and the Big O are huge concerns in Alankrita’s cinema. In her last highly-acclaimed Lipstick Under The Burqa, Konkona Sen Sharma lay listless under her heaving husband. As Dolly, Konkona is still stuck in the same place. But with a lot more problems this time than Dolly can handle,...

Dolly and Kitty could be any small town cousins. In the world of Alankrita Shrivastava, they become fictional case studies of real desires that the Indian woman of today might harbour, even as she grapples with an innate conservative mindset and a society that is still too inflexible while accepting her sexual mores.
In a way, Shrivastava was setting up a desi Fleabag of sorts, narrating the story of Radha, or Dolly (Konkona Sen sharma), and her cousin sister Kajal (Bhumi Pednekar), or Kitty from Darbhanga, Bihar. Dolly (Sen Sharma) is married and a mother of two. Along with her husband Amit (Aamir Bashir), she is trying to close installments for their dream home in an under-construction Greater Noida high rise. I don’t know how far it would be correct to call Alankrita Shrivastava’s Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare a “new” film. I remember Bhumi Pednekar talking excitedly about it with me two years ago.
But I guess everything happens in its own time. Now is the time for ‘Dolly’ Konkona Sensharma and ‘Kitty’ Bhumi P to do the sister act. And they do look comfortable enough to pass off as sisters .I must say they make for a rowdy pair of siblings, discussing each other’s sex lives(haawww) with a titillating temerity.
This is the same universe of “liberated” women we met in the director’s Lipstick Under My Burqa. Disturbingly Konkona Sen Sharma is still the sexually frustrated wife with a thoughtless husband lurching mechanically over her inert physique in a bed that needs oiling. In Burqa the heaving husband was Sushant Singh.

Netflix Releases the Trailer of Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, written and directed by Alankrita Shrivastava
About Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare:
Set in the outskirts of New Delhi, Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare chronicles the quiet transgression of two cousins, who, through their complicated love-hate equation, enable each other to find freedom.
Talking about the film, Alankrita Shrivastava (writer and director), said, “Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare is a story with these two quirky, layered characters at its heart - Dolly and Kitty.
The two cousins are trying to break through many visible and invisible shackles to live life on their own terms. It's a film with a light and fun tone! And although the film is entirely fictional, the film for me is very personal and there is a certain truth about the bond Dolly Kitty shares. It is real and relatable.

The house of Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani excels in films and now webseries populated by goodlooking people, gliding across gleaming surfaces, managing to be substantial in spite of their obvious pursuit of worldly pleasures, namely money, sex and fame.
Here in the second season of "Inside Edge" the momentum and velocity of Season 1 are maintained. Not once in the first five episodes did I feel the characters or the narrative were dragging their feet. The passion and energy of the cricketers, and of the cricketers' mentors and manipulators flows without any stressful push from the serial's creators. The push, if any, comes from the drama itself.
Season 2 opens with a kickass preamble where a hotshot tv journalist (no resemblance to Arnab) crosses the line while interviewing the powerful cricket league baron Bhaisaheb, and pays for it with his job, which he loses with one text message sent from Bhaisahab's phone.

NetflixWhile Season 1 served as exposition, the show creators pack Season 2 with backstories, flashbacks within flashbacks, and subplots.Saraswati DatarKarl Marx once wrote, “Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people". Religion like opium can bring temporary relief and create an illusion of better things to come. In Sacred Games 2, now streaming on Netflix, this opiate is both literal and metaphorical. A drink made from pink berries that is an effective and profitable hallucinogen, and religion itself, that has created addicts and caused wars, all in the name of ironically a loving God. Season 1 of Sacred Games ended on a note of high drama with less than 15 days left for Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan) to save Mumbai from an impending disaster. He gets the tip from runaway gangster Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui...

Gurgaon
Starring Pankaj Tripathy, Akshay Oberoi, Ragini Khanna,Aamir Bashir
Directed by Shankar Raman
The gleaming glittering surfaces of Gurgaon which stands between the violent hinterland of Haryana and the Capital politics of Delhi, renders itself with ironic radiance to the themes of entrepreneurial greed and violence in cinema. Atul Sabharwal’s Aurangzeb was an underrated attempt at understanding the strife that controls the monstrous affluence of the constantly-evolving region.
Director Shankar Raman’s Gurgaon gets it right immediately and ineradicably. This is a land of opportunity, and opportunism. There is a sense of immediacy and doom in the storytelling which coil themselves around the viewer from the first frame in such a persuasive manner that we are sucked into the tale although some of what happens here is done more for effect than out of an inner conviction.
But the absence of credibility never comes in the way of...
