Pakk Hui
- Composer
Originally from Hong Kong, Pakk Hui's film music journey began as a young boy watching various film genres with his family. Completely immersed in American sci-fi, adventure and horror films, Hong Kong's action comedies, as well as Miyazaki's animations, Pakk quickly developed an intense passion for film and film music. A career in music, however, never felt like a real option for Pakk because his parents heavily pushed him to become a doctor. As a result, Pakk initially went on to pursue a career in the medical field. During this time, Pakk composed orchestral music as a creative outlet, and he realized that film music was where his passion truly lied. This inevitably led him to follow his dream at Boston's world renowned Berklee College of Music where he studied film scoring and composition.
In 2005, Pakk relocated to Los Angeles. Pakk has contributed additional music on over 300 TV episodes (including Reacher, Hawaii Five-0, American Gigolo and more), and over a dozen blockbuster films (such as Furious 7, Avenger: Age of Ultron, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and more). Furthermore, he has scored numerous projects on his own, including the feature film Sway (dir. Rooth Tang), which was an official selection at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, and the short film Tsuyako (dir. Hikari), which won over 30 awards from festivals all around the world.
Most recently, Pakk was chosen to be one of eight composers to participate in the Universal Composers Initiative 2021-2023, an advanced career development program that aims to uplift diverse and unique voices.
His first name is pronounced "PAHK", and last name is "HOO-way". He lives in the valley with his husband, Will, and their miniature golden-doodle Daisy. Pakk is a proud member of the Academy of Television Arts & Science, Composers Diversity Collective, The Society of Composers & Lyricists, Broadcast Music, Inc (BMI) and the Recording Academy.
