From Anthony Bourdain giving American readers an inside look at the rock ’n’ roll restaurant industry in Kitchen Confidential to Nancy Meyers’ citrus-dotted white marble countertops in enviable home kitchens, modern American audiences have had an infatuation with cookery. Though previously largely reserved for the nonfiction space with entries like Bourdain’s No Reservations and Netflix’s operatic Chef’s Table, the narrative possibilities of the dark underbelly of back-of-house restaurant staff have began to emerge lately. The Bear, the anxiety-inducing FX series about a Chicago Italian beef joint, swept the Emmys in January and is poised to do the same this go-around. After two weeks of new cinema, the Berlin Film Festival comes to a close this Sunday, February 25, with its annual awards ceremony. This year’s event marks one of change, as festival artistic director Carlo Chatrian, at his post since 2018, steps down to make way for Tricia Tuttle, who will take over for next year’s outing.
This year’s Berlinale has already stirred plenty of buzz for films like Alonso Ruizpalacios’s “La Cocina,” a drama set in a New York City kitchen and starring Rooney Mara, and Tim Mielants’ opener “Small Things Like These,” starring likely Oscar winner Cillian Murphy. Both films are eligible for awards, along with “Timbuktu” director Abderrahmane Sissako’s “Black Tea,” “Goodnight Mommy” filmmakers Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s “The Devil’s Bath,” “The Guilty” director Gustav Möller’s “Sons,” Olivier Assayas’ “Suspended Time,” plus Aaron Schimberg’s Sundance hit “A Different Man,” and many more.

The awards ceremony for the 74th Berlin International Film Festival kicks off Saturday night, where this year’s jury, headed by 12 Years a Slave and Black Panther actress Lupita Nyong’o, will hand out the coveted Gold and Silver Bears.
Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha’s Iranian drama My Favourite Cake is being given good odds for an award this year. The drama, about a 70-year-old widow and her tentative attempts at romance with an age-appropriate taxi driver, was a critical fave. A win for the film would also send a political message after the Iranian government banned the directors from attending Berlin. If the jury picks out Cake for the Golden Bear it would be the third time in 10 years —following Jafar Panahi’s Taxi (2015) and There Is No Evil (2020) from Mohammad Rasoulof —that Berlin has given its top honor to Iranian directors in absentia. Everyone knows that most big restaurant kitchens are a mess. Everyone also knows that restaurant workers are overworked, underpaid, usually some of the most stressed out people on the planet, who work tirelessly where we can't see them to prepare our food and keep the restaurant running at full speed. There have been a number of good films made about kitchens and restaurant workers recently (Boiling Point and "The Bear" are two of the most prominent) and now there's another new one to add to that growing subgenre. La Cocina is the latest feature film made by a Mexican filmmaker named Alonso Ruizpalacios, who directs this B&w drama based on the acclaimed stage play by Arnold Wesker. Alas, La Cocina is unfortunately a messy, tiresomely chaotic, frustrating film that is so obsessed with its own chaos that it becomes annoying to sit through, especially the final 30 minutes. Check, please! I don't want a desert today,...

Rooney Mara is a renowned actress known for her excellent work in selective projects. She picks her roles wisely and never misses a chance to nail them. She has been nominated for several top awards, like the Oscars, BAFTA, and Golden Globes.
Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Mara wasn’t well-known at the start of her career, but everything changed in 2010. She grabbed headlines when she got cast in David Fincher’s remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in 2011.
She has also starred in some standout films like Her (2013), Carol (2015), Lion (2016), and Nightmare Alley (2021). The actress has learned from tough experiences that it’s best not to clash with directors. She values collaborating with them and trusts their vision for the project.

It was when Alonso Ruizpalacios was in London working as a dishwasher at the (now-extinct) Rainforest Cafe that he came up with the idea for La Cocina.
“I was a drama student and I’d just read the [1957] play The Kitchen by Arnold Wesker and to make the work — which is tough, monotonous and very, very hard — bearable, I’d look at it through the creative lens of the play. If you see how a kitchen works, you realize it is much like the world, like [how] society works. Wesker says for Shakespeare all the world is a stage, whereas for him all the world is a kitchen.”
It was decades later, after success with Mexican films like Museo and A Cop Movie, that Ruizpalacios came back to the idea, taking The Kitchen as the jumping-off point for his English-language debut, transferring the action from late-’50s London to modern-day New York.

Soap Kitchen: Ruizpalacios Underwhelms & Over Bakes Food Drama
Making his English language debut with fourth feature La Cocina, based on the notable stage play by Arnold Wesker, Alonso Ruizpalacios presents an absurd, impulsive microcosm of oft invisible experiences. Taking place behind-the-scenes in what appears to be a mediocre tourist mainstay in Times Square (set in an era before cellphones), a teeming community of workers tossed together like a makeshift family goes about the daily grind. As circumstances dictate, the focus is one particularly grueling lunch shift in which various coinciding dilemmas come to a show stopping head.

Egos are charred and tempers seared in La Cocina, a kitchen nightmare set in the engine rooms of a vast Times Square eatery where the staff have more pressing things to worry about than rising temperatures. Take Pedro, a hardened and still-undocumented line cook whose outbursts of ideology can only mask his resentments and vulnerability for so long. Then there’s Julia (Rooney Mara), who is carrying Pedro’s unborn child, hiding her morning sickness in the staff room and planning to sneak out on break to get an abortion. And then there’s Estela (Anna Diaz), our eyes and ears: fresh off the proverbial boat, with barely a word of English, asking strangers on the subway how to get to 45th street before being unceremoniously tossed into a lunch shift that soon resembles The Raft of the Medusa, adrift on a sea of Cherry Coke.

Mexican director Alonso Ruizpalacios has had a winning record coming to the Berlin Film Festival since 2013, when his film Gueros took the Best First Feature prize. Five years later he was back with his second, the sensational museum-heist film Museo, and deservedly won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay. His third, A Cop Movie, which plays with the traditional docu form by using actors, won Best Documentary at Mexico’s Golden Ariel Awards.
Ruizpalacios belongs in the same league as iconic current Mexican directors Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and particularly Alejandro González Iñárritu, whose cinematic style seems closest to what Ruizpalacios has been doing. Before demonstrating himself to be one of Mexico’s most original and exciting new filmmaking talents, Alonso Ruizpalacios washed dishes in a bustling big-city kitchen. That experience informs every second of the “Museo” director’s fourth feature, “La Cocina,” a thrilling in-spirit adaptation of Arnold Wesker’s 1957 play “The Kitchen,” transposed from midcentury London to modern-day New York.
A chaotic symphony of nearly two dozen characters, this black-and-white indie confection (garnished with sparing touches of color) mixes biting social critique with stylistic bravura. The setting is in the guts of a high-volume midtown Manhattan restaurant called The Grill — a hectic pressure cooker where personal and professional concerns come to a boil.
The food looks edible at best, and a lot less enticing after we’ve witnessed the commotion that goes into preparing it. In Ruizpalacios’ version, practically the entire staff — not Rooney Mara’s pregnant waitress, but the ones touching the food,...

Rooney Mara has become increasingly selective with her roles, often prioritizing projects from A-list auteurs and taking long hiatuses when the right films don’t materialize. At the Berlin Film Festival press conference for her new film “La Cocina” (via Variety), Mara attributed some of her choosiness to her insistence on working with directors she trusts.

“It’s about a whole bunch of things,” Mexican filmmaker Alonso Ruizpalacios says when quizzed on the subject of his latest feature, La Cocina, debuting this evening at the Berlin Film Festival. “In equal parts, it explores the topic of work, the American dream, the failure of the American dream, and abortion rights. That’s a really tough question as a director.”
Ruizpalacios has a point. Starring Rooney Mara and shot in a crisp digital black-and-white, La Cocina is hard to define. Running just short of two-and-a-half hours, the pic is a complex and formally ambitious tale, perhaps best described as a tragicomedy, set in a deathly busy New York City restaurant called The Grill.

Battered by disappointing markets at Toronto and AFM, both of which were held under the shadow of the actors strike, buyers and sellers are looking to Berlin’s European Film Market (EFM), which runs Feb. 15-21, to re-energize the indie business. The outlook, coming out of Sundance, is good.
“The difference in Sundance from last year to this was extreme, there were a lot more deals being down, both by distributors and streamers,” says Janina Vislmaier, head of sales at Protagonist Pictures, which screened The Outrun with Saoirse Ronan and Sasquatch Sunset with Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg in Park City, both of which will screen at the EFM. “Everyone is really excited ahead of Berlin, especially because all the buyers are back, including from Asia, which is a really good sign.”

In it, the English-language debut of Mexican director Alonso Ruizpalacios (A Cop Movie, Museo), Mara plays Julia, an American waitress working the high-stress lunch rush in the Manhattan restaurant The Grill, whose relationship with undocumented Mexican grill cook Pedro (Briones) is about to be put to the test.
The official posters for the film, exclusively revealed to The Hollywood Reporter, show the Women Talking and Girl With the Dragon Tattoo actress back-to-back with Briones, bound together by a seemingly unending ticker tape of lunch orders. In the bottom corner, a loose lobster appears to be making a break for freedom.
A second poster shows Mara cleaning the glass of the lobster tank while Briones looks on. Submerged inside the tank is a mini Statute of Liberty, symbolic of the (broken?...

The film’s synopsis reads: “It’s the lunch rush at The Grill in Manhattan, and money has gone missing from the till. All the undocumented cooks are being investigated, and Pedro (Briones) is the prime suspect. Berlinale co-directors Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Rissenbeek are going out with a bang in their final year, with a lineup unveiled today featuring the latest works by Olivier Assayas, Bruno Dumont, Mati Diop, Hong Sang-soo, Abderrahmane Sissako, Jane Schoenbrun, Alonso Ruizpalacios, Matias Pineiro, Travis Wilkerson, Kazik Radwanski, Annie Baker, and more.
When the co-directors were asked by Screen Daily about their departure, Chatrian said, “It’s quite simple. Mariette and I had a mandate of five years. It is true that at the beginning I said that I was willing to go on because there was a shared will with the [German] Ministry [of Culture] to go on. But then the people who have the responsibility to see the future of the Berlinale thought this structure of two leaders was not the right one and I don’t consider myself able to run the festival alone. And that was the decision of the Ministry.

Among the announcements presented at today’s Star Wars Celebration 2023 is the return of the acclaimed series that follows Rogue One character Cassian Andor. Andor season 2 was being written during the first season’s production and had been shooting since last November. The teaser for the next season of the Disney+ Star Wars series was debuted at the celebration after the announcement by the show’s creator, Tony Gilroy, that the new season is due to hit home screens sometime in August 2024.
Deadline reports that Gilroy has stated, “We started shooting in November. We’re halfway. We will finish shooting in August, a year on post, and we’ll come out in the following August.” Gilroy also talked about how the writers planned the show’s ending with this coming season. With "Andor" season 1 in the bag, it's fair to say showrunner and creator Tony Gilroy and his fellow creatives have exceeded expectations with their "Rogue One" prequel series. What might have been little more than another log to add to the fire that is Disney+ and its never-ending supply of exclusive films and shows has emerged as perhaps the greatest "Star Wars" project released by the Mouse House to date. Heck, it's arguably in contention for the distinction of best live-action "Star Wars" title ever. Yes, really.
In its first season, "Andor" not only revealed the origins of the titular "Rogue One" character, but it also shined a light on the early days of the Rebel Alliance, painting the organization and its founding members in far richer shades of grey rather than the clear-cut heroes seen in the original "Star Wars" trilogy. But for as much as the show has...

If you have been enjoying "Andor" like we have, you'll be thrilled to know it won't be long before the production gets up and running again in a galaxy far, far away. Showrunner Tony Gilroy revealed in an interview with Collider that filming will start in only a couple of weeks. He told the website that the cameras will roll on "the Monday before Thanksgiving," and if you've got your calendar nearby, that means production will begin on November 21. Yeah, we weren't kidding with that headline.
While their full interview has not been published as of this writing, Collider gave some insight into what Gilroy will be doing when the season begins filming. The "Andor" creator will oversee the first shot of season 2 in London before leaving and returning to the United States for the Thanksgiving holiday. Even though he won't be sticking around for long, he'll have the likes of Ariel Kleiman,...

Tony Gilroy‘s Andor is one of the most refreshing entries in the Star Wars universe in decades, and fans are frothing at the mouth to know when filming for a second season will get underway. Thankfully, Collider‘s Steve Weintraub has the scoop, making this chill Autumn Friday afternoon a bit sweeter. According to Gilroy, filming for Andor Season 2 starts November 21, the Monday before Thanksgiving.
In addition to revealing the targeted production date for Andor Season 2, Gilroy confirmed Ariel Kleiman, Janus Metz, and Alonso Ruizpalacios as directors for the new season. Are you familiar with the phrase, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it?” Gilroy is not messing with the original recipe for Andor and is happy to report that his brother, Dan Gilroy, and Beau Willmon, will return to write the upcoming season. Joining the writing team is Tom Bissell, who Gilroy says is a “really cool and really,...

In the span of its first handful of episodes, "Andor" has brought a completely new and much-needed creative revitalization to the "Star Wars" franchise. Much of this has to do with the fact that creator Tony Gilroy ("Michael Clayton," the "Bourne" trilogy) put aside any questions of studio interference -- like the kind that plagued the production of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" -- and simply told the boldly visionary story he set out to tell. But part of that success also came from the clever construction of the first season as a whole.
Split up into a number of mini-arcs, "Andor" has generally featured the same pairing of writer and director attached to three or four blocks of episodes at a time. Director Toby Haynes and Gilroy teamed up for the first few episodes, Susanna White and Dan Gilroy took over for the next three, and Haynes and...

After taking a few years off, Rooney Mara returned last winter with Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley and she’ll be seen later this year in Sarah Polley’s highly-anticipated drama Women Talking. Now, we’ve learned her next role in a project that has already quietly begun production.
Mara is leading La Cocina, the latest film from Mexican director Alonso Ruizpalacios, who helmed Gueros, Museo, and last year’s A Cop Movie. With production already underway in Mexico City, the film is reportedly based on Arnold Wesker’s play, following “the life in the kitchen of a vast New York City restaurant where all the cultures of the world mix during the lunchtime rush.”

“And the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature goes to… My Octopus Teacher… to American Factory… to Icarus.”
The Motion Picture Academy has enveloped Netflix nonfiction features with love again and again in recent years, rewarding the streamer with three trophies since 2018, not to mention half a dozen nominations overall.
But the story this year seems less Netflix and more National Geographic.
In a typical year, Netflix might easily boast five contenders. But this time around it’s Nat Geo with a quintet of competitors: Torn, The First Wave, Playing with Sharks, The Rescue—directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin—and Becoming Cousteau, the film about celebrated French marine explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau directed by two-time Oscar nominee Liz Garbus.

In coming up with the distinct structure for “A Cop Movie,” producer Elena Fortes wanted it to showcase the breakdown in the relationship the people of Mexico City have with law enforcement. “We wanted the journey of the filmmaking process itself to somehow reflect our own journey, not understanding why the relationship between citizens and police officers is so broken,” Fortes tells Gold Derby in our Meet the Experts: Film Documentary panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). Fortes goes on to explain that she hopes that that experience comes across for the film’s viewers. “I guess the driving point for the structure is making that kind of multilayered experience happen for everyone in the, in the process of making the film and in the process of watching the film.”

From the very beginning, we are transplanted into the Pov of not only Teresa as a person, but of her police car as it patrols; through the thick lens of her front window, beside the radiant red and blue flashing lights,...

A Cop Movie (Alonso Ruizpalacios)
There has never been a less auspicious time to make a “cop movie.” As scrutiny abounds from both within (content warnings on streaming services) and externally (social media) towards the past output of media producers, also suspect are the bevy of films and series that glamorize law enforcement, or see the police as uncomplicated arbiters of justice. Of course, last summer’s Black Lives Matter protests initiated all kinds of brave new thinking about a potential world devoid of cops. Like the Western genre, perhaps all police thrillers in future will be revisionist ones. Audiences taking in cinematographer Emiliano Villanueva’s images in Mexican documentary hybrid “A Cop Movie” are not likely to appreciate that he and the director, Alonso Ruizpalacios, risked life and limb, shooting on some of the toughest street locations they could find to create the Berlin film fest sensation focused on the emotional lives of two police patrol grunts.
“These were really dangerous areas,” says the Dp, whose work with Ruizpalacios is screening in the documentary features section of the Camerimage Film Festival, describing the more traditional doc approach he used to chronicle the routines, dangers and joys of daily police work. “Guys were looking at us.”
But with filming and lighting that is so precise and street shooting scenes that also involve actors, audiences may well overlook the real risk the filmmakers faced – along with the unscripted moments that emerge.
