How much of the journey is worth it when you’re scratching your head at the destination? That’s the question one must confront in Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans.
Originating from the book series created by del Toro and Daniel Kaus, 2016 series Trollhunters kicked off Tales of Arcadia as part of Netflix’s quest to produce original animation for children. You don’t go into Trollhunters and its two series successors, 3Below and Wizards, expecting form-breaking storytelling for Western children’s cartoons, but each series had plenty to offer: Del Toro’s colorful realms with their own mythology, slapstick one-liners in the midst of swordplay, and colorful creatures from lovable Aaarrrgghh (Fred Tatasciore) to the paternal Blinky (Kelsey Grammar) with his teacher bravado.
All set in the sleepy town of Arcadia, Trollhunters explored the mounting responsibilities of a Chosen-One mantle held by a human boy...

In 2016, Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro first announced his plans with DreamWorks to produce the animated series “Trollhunters” in a presentation at the Annecy Animation Festival. Now, five years later, he returns – although virtually – to discuss the franchise’s feature film finale “Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans,” and share a trailer ahead of its July 21 Netflix premiere.
In a pre-recorded Dreamworks Studio Focus presentation posted on Tuesday morning, Del Toro was joined by producer Chad Hammes and directors Francisco Ruiz Velasco, Johane Matte and Andrew L. Schmidt for a nearly hour-long discussion about the history of the “Tales of Arcadia” franchise and its Netflix-bound feature film conclusion.
Hammes kicked off the talk by asking Del Toro how he felt closing the five-year circle at this year’s Annecy.
“It’s a relief,” he admitted before casting his memory back to the 2016 announcement. “It was great because we were going to...

DreamWorks Animation comes to the Annecy Animation Festival again on a wave of success: last spring, despite the pandemic and theater closures, “Trolls World Tour” hit a limited number of venues but really hit big on-demand, while “Croods: A New Age” reaped pent-up demand at theaters in the fall and winter as venues opened around the world. Its TV animation unit boasts buzzy hits such as “Trollhunters,” “Tales of Arcadia: Wizards” and “3Below: Tales of Arcadia” from Guillermo del Toro, “Voltron Legendary Defender,” “She-Ra,” “Spirit Riding Free” as well as spinoffs from “Madagascar,” “Fast and Furious,” “Kung Fu Panda” and ‘How to Train Your Dragon.”
This year at Annecy, DreamWorks is showcasing “Spirit Untamed,” “The Boss Baby: Family Business” and “Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans.” All works will be the focus of panels at Annecy, with del Toro leading the “Titans.”

You’re welcome, America. Yesterday, Den of Geek put Dreamworks and Netflix’s feet to the fire, requesting…nay, demanding that their animated adventure story Tales of Arcadia not end with the third installment, Wizards.
Wizards is the final installment of #TalesofArcadia…unless we can heckle @Netflix and @Dreamworks into more. https://t.co/w7XLgdPBR3

And just under 24 hours later, both corporate entities caved! Dreamworks and Netflix announced today that the Tales of Arcadia saga is getting a grand movie finale. Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans is set to premiere sometime in 2021.
“Team Trollhunters committed, about a decade ago, to try and push the boundaries of 3D CGI animation made for TV. We outlined a vast trilogy of interconnecting mythology and characters that we always hoped could culminate with a massive ‘all-stars reunion’,” creator and executive producer Guillermo del Toro said in a statement.

Wong Kar-Wai's martial arts epic "The Grandmaster" kicks its way onto screens this weekend, with a generous push from The Weinstein Company. The studio has been promoting the movie via traditional methods, but they've also been thinking outside the box. Last month, they brought Wong Kar-Wai to San Diego for Comic-Con and in a fitting fashion, a comic book was created at the same time and released at the convention. But if you weren't in San Diego and still want to check it out, we've got a pretty special treat... We've got a handful of copies of the "Ip Man: The Grandmaster Of Kung Fu" comic, signed by Wong Kar-Wai, to give away to some lucky readers. Created by former Marvel and Idw editor Andy Schmidt, and artists Chris Evenhuis, Ph Marcondes and more, the comic is based on the film, which tells the story of Ip Man, the...

He's one of Marvel's most important cosmic characters, and a key ally of the Guardians of the Galaxy. And yet, Nova, also known as the Human Rocket, is not currently slated to appear in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" film.
Might Marvel be saving him for a solo film of his own? To see why Nova could merit such treatment, we need to take a look at his history over 35 years of comics, as well as the newest incarnation of the character.

For decades now, Hasbro's "G.I. Joe" brand has been one of the great cross-media success stories, with popular toy lines, television series, comic books, and even a recent, live-action, blockbuster film. While the stable of G.I. Joe characters has grown over the years, the basic formula has remained largely the same: G.I. Joe are the good guys, Cobra are the bad guys, and Cobra Commander is the baddest of the bad guys.
All that changes, however, with this week's issue of Idw Publishing's "G.I. Joe: Cobra" #12.
Spoiler Warning: If you haven't read the issue yet (and plan to), you might want to check it out, find out what happens, and then come back for the rest of this story. After all, knowing is half the battle.
Good to go? Okay, then...

Yesterday we got a look at the San Diego Comic-Con 2010 schedule for Wednesday and Thursday of the show, and today the Friday schedule has landed online.
You can read the whole Friday lineup at the Comic-Con website, but heed this warning: It's intimidating, to say the least.
I've sifted through it to find some of the events you might be particularly interested from the worlds of comics, movies, television, games, and anything else that seemed appropriately awesome. Feel free to chime in via the comment section with the panels, events, and other fun stuff you want to check out Friday.
We're big fans of "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" animated series here at Splash Page HQ, and the added bonus of a "Young Justice" premiere has this one underlined on our Comic-Con schedule:
10:30-11:30 Batman: The Brave and the Bold Screening and Q&A— The Caped Crusader...

Idw Publishing has lifted the lid on its controversial Transformers plotline. The debut issue in the new ongoing series sees fan-favourite Ironhide killed off and Autobot leader Optimus Prime resign from his post. "This first story arc is all about upheaval and change and what happens when you realise that all the tools and skills you've previously spent your life accruing are no longer effective," said writer Mike Costa. Editor Andy Schmidt added: "Ultimately, our book is based around a universal theme of 'transformation' and, more importantly, that real change and real transformation must first come from within. A new chapter begins in the Transformers universe this month as Idw Publishing launches a regular, ongoing "Transformers" comic book series featuring Optimus Prime, Megatron and the rest of the robots in disguise.
However, before the new series can kick off, there's a lot of "Transformers" history to make sense of and fit into the property's comic book history. That's why Idw is releasing "Transformers: Continuum" this week, featuring a 32-page, ad-free take on the key players in the next stage of Transformers lore, covering everything from "Infiltration" to the recent "All Hail Megatron" series.
Idw has offered Splash Page readers an exclusive preview at "Transformers: Continuum," featuring a story by Andy Schmidt and art by Ken Christensen.
Click on the cover image below for a "Transformers: Continuum" preview, which hits shelves November 11.

Idw Publishing is reprinting classic issues of the original G.I. Joe comic series, editor Andy Schmidt has revealed. Classic G.I. Joe Volume 6 is a graphic novel compilation featuring the work of critically acclaimed writer Larry Hama. It also features early contributions from Rod Whigham, Andy Mushynsky and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane. Idw editor Andy Schmidt has revealed details on the publisher's upcoming special Transformers: Continuum. The 32-page book will pave the way for a new series starring the shape-shifting robots, their first original comic book outing for several years. Its storyline takes place during the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons, climaxing with the latter's domination of Earth. "Continuum is almost like a history book for Transformers. It's written very much as a third-person account of this universe. The book contains actual art from some of the past comic series, so readers get a true visual overview of this history, as well," Schmidt told USA Today. "The book fills in the components for those who know the movies but might not be familiar (more)...

The reported $600 million "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" has taken in worldwide means that giant robots are on a lot of people's minds this summer, and Idw Publishing hopes that will still be the case in November when they launch the first of three new titles starring the popular robots in disguise.
The "Transformers" moniker has a long history in comics, and Idw has kept the shelves full of Starscream and Megatron miniseries for quite a while now. Idw's new lineup, however, will be led by the 'bots' first ongoing title in years.
"This is the first ongoing 'Transformers' series for Idw, and there's a good reason to do it now," said Idw editor Andy Schmidt. "These stories are too big and too important to contain in even several volumes of miniseries."

Next month's "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" movie premier may have some fans awaiting with cautious optimism given its deviations from its source material, but there's one development in Joe canon that should have "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero" fans interested -- a new comic book series penned by Max Brooks.
Idw has announced that former "Saturday Night Live" scribe and author of zombie survival tome "World War Z" is writing an upcoming five-issue "G.I. Joe" miniseries due out next year.
“Both Chris Ryall (Idw Editor-in-chief) and I read 'World War Z' and we knew we had to try to get Max to write something for us. What we didn’t know is that Max is a huge 'G.I. Joe' fan and had expressed interest in writhing 'G.I. Joe' to ('Cobra' writer) Christos Gage,” said Andy Schmidt, Idw’s 'G.I.

One of the most enjoyable things about writing for The Flickcast is having early access to new products like comics, movies and video games. Along with that, sometimes comes the chance for exclusive access to their creators as well. Recently, I was given the chance to interview Christos Gage.
For those not familiar with him, he has quite an extensive resume both in television and comics, from Law and Order: Special Victims Unit to Avengers: Initiative from Marvel. And of course we can’t forget the Flickcast favorite miniseries he recently was a part of through Idw, G.I.Joe: Cobra. Now, Christos is taking on a new challenge, but one he is most certainly looking forward to.
Coming out in August, Christos will debut Absolution from Avatar Press. The same people who brought us Crossed by Garth Ennis will be giving Christos free reign on his creator owned property.

Back in the 1960s, the first doll to be called an "action figure" was created. The "G.I. Joe" line (named after a term used to describe a generic soldier) was a popular toy and depicted soldiers from different U.S. armed forces. In the 1970s, it was re-tooled as the Super Joe Action Team.
In the 1980s, the line was re-launched by Hasbro as "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero" and now there was a story wrapped around the action figuress. It was said that the different characters were all part of a group called G.I. Joe, essentially a counter-terrorist strike force involving the best agents from all branches of the military. Their primary enemy was said to be Cobra, an organization bent on world domination and led by the vicious Cobra Commander and aided by the Scottish war profiteer James McCullen Destro.
