What works theatrically? And how do you turn a ‘no’ into a ‘yes’ for a passion project in an everchanging entertainment landscape where there’s a push and pull between the big screen and streaming?
On today’s Crew Call we talk with Susan Downey and Amanda Burrell of Team Downey, who are behind the HBO limited Park Chan-wook series The Sympathizer, about knocking down walls in today’s Hollywood in order to get smart, elevated projects off the ground.
Says Burrell, who is the President of Team Downey, “Our job is to get people to say yes and that’s with our passion, with our pushing.”
Adds Downey, “The marketplace is fickle, everybody is trying to get people in theaters, or in this case, watching on their streamer…So many things contribute to you getting a ‘yes’ (on a project). Even Robert gives us a ‘No’.”

We recently learned that Scarlett Johansson's next Marvel Studios project, which she'll produce rather than star in, could be The Blonde Phantom.
Now, thanks to scooper Daniel Richtman, we have a few additional details, including the fact this role is one of the characters singer Taylor Swift discussed with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige during their recent meeting.
As we're sure you'll recall, it's been widely reported that Swift - who counts 14 Grammy Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, 40 American Music Awards, 39 Billboard Music Awards, and 23 MTV Video Music Awards among her many accolades - had a "good" conversation with Feige about joining the MCU. We didn't expect Blonde Phantom to be on the list but she clearly stands out to both Johansson and Swift.
Richtman adds that this would be a spy show which takes place in Las Vegas in the 1950s.

Barbra Fuller, who starred as the daughter Claudia on the long-running radio soap opera One Man’s Family, all while appearing in films for Republic Pictures and such TV shows as Adventures of Superman, has died. She was 102.
Fuller, who lived in the Los Angeles area, died Wednesday, her godson J.P. Sloane announced.
On the San Francisco-set One Man’s Family, created by Carlton E. Morse, Fuller played one of the Barbour family’s five kids from 1945 until the NBC Radio drama completed its 27-year run in 1959. We're not getting a break from Station 19's family members making appearances.
One of the most exciting aspects of Station 19 Season 7 Episode 8 lies in a notable guest star.
The hour will also delve into another topical issue.
The upcoming installment will be one that heavily features Natasha Ross.
The chief has a lot on her plate as she deals with the constant shifts, financial restraints, and high demands of running the house and trying to keep everyone employed.
However, she also has her personal life to consider as she and Sullivan are planning to get married.
Oddly enough, because so much of her storyline revolves around whether or not she'd have to choose her career or love, there seem to be little to no lasting consequences of their relationship, which never should've been controversial in the first place.
No, with the series ending, they've focused on more positive...

A war can only go on for so long before its causes start to fray at the seams and the people who enlisted to fight on their behalf are forced to reckon with the basic fact of what they’re actually doing out there. Few movies this side of “The Thin Red Line” have been more attuned to that awful but clarifying process of self-recognition than Roberto Minervini’s “The Damned,” a thinly sketched piece of Civil War reenactment about a volunteer unit dispatched to patrol the uncharted borderlands along the western territories during the winter of 1862.

Scarlett Johansson, previously announced as the producer of a confidential Marvel project, marks her debut in this role. Following her lawsuit against Disney after the simultaneous release of ‘Black Widow’ in theaters and on Disney+ in July 2021, which was resolved two months later, Johansson’s portrayal of Natasha Romanoff has concluded. However, fans can anticipate her involvement in an upcoming MCU project she’ll produce alongside Kevin Feige.
Recent reports suggest that Scarlett Johansson is presently collaborating with Disney+ on a secretive venture. The clue emerged from Courtney Baker, a creative executive at Marvel Studios, who updated her LinkedIn profile, hinting at new developments or responsibilities within the company.
According to Giant Freaking Robot, the project under wraps is a live-action series centered on Blonde Phantom. It remains uncertain if Scarlett will portray Blonde Phantom or if her involvement will be purely behind-the-scenes. However, with the current Multiverse theme, her leading role seems plausible.

Jason Statham is heading to Scotland for an untitled action thriller from director Baltasar Kormakur. More on the project here.
Jason Statham’s already scored a delightfully fun hit movie this year with The Beekeeper, which has turned in a good profit after its cinema run back in January. He made that with director David Ayer, and the pair are now working on a new film, Levon’s Trade, based on a script written by Sylvester Stallone. It’s currently set for release at the start of 2025.
By the time that particular film arrives with us though, Jason Statham will be on a remote Scottish island, filming his next movie after that. It’s a film without a title at the moment, but we know that it’s going to be directed by Baltasar Kormakur, who previously brought Everest to the big screen.

Jason Statham is someone who is admirably unpretentious and genuinely grateful for his success, and within that, he has a definite preference of films that can predominantly define his career. Earlier this year, Statham was seen in The Beekeeper, a seemingly usual action B-movie fare with the star, but the movie from Suicide Squad director David Ayer would throw in some bold conceptual curve balls to the normal vengeance tale. Deadline has now reported that Statham will be working with director Baltasar Kormákur for his next action film.
Kormákur’s resume features such credits as Contraband, 2 Guns, Everest and the recent Idris Elba lion attack film, Beast. As the film landscape’s obsession with cinematic universes continues – hell, there’s even a horror-themed Poohniverse in development – Paramount has its (speedy) sights set on expanding its Sega-assisted Sonic-verse between big-screen sequels. Enter Paramount+ spin-off miniseries Knuckles – another live-action/CGI hybrid production, like the big-screen outings – arriving before this year’s Sonic 3 (set to introduce Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog), expanding the family-friendly franchise with a show focused around the Idris Elba-voiced Echidna.
Die-hard fans looking for mythology deep-dives and tidbits setting up the Blue Blur’s next instalment should, however, temper their expectations. After a brief halt in production, AMC was able to secure “significant agreements” with the SAG-AFTRA actors union that allowed them to continue filming Interview with the Vampire season 2 during the SAG strike last year, keeping the show on track for its 2024 premiere. We got a Pride-themed installment of Station 19.
Unfortunately, after Station 19 Season 7 Episode 3, our Round Table isn't feeling very prideful, as they express mixed feelings about how the series tackled the theme and who the hour centered.
The installment included a blast from the past when Maya saw her brother Mason protesting Pride and Travis and his father having a much-needed heart-to-heart.
Join our Station 19 Round Table, which is comprised of Ellie Mv, Heather M., and TV Fanatics Haley Whitmire White and Sara Trimble, as they break down the episode.
Join the discussion below.
If you had to grade the season so far, what would it be? What are you enjoying most about the season, and what are you struggling with most?
Ellie: Oh boy… *nervous laugh*
If I had to grade the season so far, it would be 0/10. I'm sorry, but this is the worst season the writers have ever written.

Ang Lee broke ground on films like “Gemini Man” and “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk,” developing new camera systems to experiment with de-aging and high-frame rates in 3D. But as the old adage goes, you’re only as good as your last picture, and in the case of the Oscar-winning “Brokeback Mountain” director, he hasn’t released a new movie since 2019’s “Gemini Man” bombed at the box office. As did “Billy Lynn,” a movie that could only be shown properly in a small handful of screens, before it underperformed in 2016.
Lee, who is being honored at his alma mater New York University at a Tisch gala on April 8, spoke with IndieWire about his experiences making those films — and why he’s not going to repeat their innovations for his upcoming Bruce Lee biopic, starring Ang Lee’s own son Mason. On Thursday, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed the United States’ very first AI music law: the Elvis Act, which amends pre-existing legislation to protect the voices of artists as property rights.
Signed at a ceremony hosted at a honky tonk in Nashville’s famous Broadway district, the Elvis Act was supported by the initiative, The Human Artistry Campaign, and has a number of prominent supporters, including country stars Luke Bryan and Chris Janson (who were both at the signing), Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., a bipartisan coalition of Tennessee lawmakers, and more.
Amending the state’s pre-existing Personal Rights Protection Act of 1984, the law — formally titled the Ensuring Likeness, Voice, and Image Security Act of 2024 — basically upgrades an individual’s voice to a property right, like their name, photograph, and likeness. Those who knowingly use an individual’s voice “for purposes of advertising products, merchandise, goods, or services, or for purposes of fundraising,...

"You just have to keep one step ahead of her." Saban Films has unveiled the trailer for a crime thriller titled Cash Out, from a filmmaker known as "Ives", debuting to watch at the end of April. Yet another of these dime a dozen, extremely derivative crime thrillers. This one is about a bank robbery gone wrong. When his crew's bank heist goes wrong, Mason gets trapped with his team inside the bank they’re trying to rob, and then it all evolves to a hostage situation involving Swat teams, the FBI and Interpol. How will they get out of this high stakes trap? John Travolta stars as Mason, with Kristin Davis, Quavo, Lukas Haas, Swen Temmel, Sean Astin, and Noel Gugliemi. Apparently there is already a sequel to Cash Out that's shot and ready to go - filmed in 2023 after this one filmed in 2022. Huh. This looks so forgettably...

Gatecreeper have announced their new album, Dark Superstition, and shared the first single “The Black Curtain” ahead of the LP’s May 17th release date.
The Arizona band has made its name with grinding death metal up to this point, but “The Black Curtain” points in a more accessible, melodic direction.
The low-end remains thick and goopy, but the lean chord progression and driving groove of the track isn’t far removed from Lamb of God or Alice in Chains’ more alt-metal moments. The guttural vocals of Chase H. Mason, however, remain steeped in the recognizable aesthetics of death metal.
“It’s about being trapped between living and dying,” Mason said of the track via a press release. “A soul trapped in purgatory begging to be brought back by a supernatural force.”
Regarding the rest of the album, Mason added: “Many of the songs incorporate supernatural ideas with my own experiences.

Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the armorer on the ill-fated Western film “Rust,” was convicted on Wednesday of involuntary manslaughter in the death of the film’s cinematographer.
Jurors returned a verdict after less than three hours of deliberations on Wednesday afternoon, following two weeks of testimony about safety lapses on set.
Gutierrez Reed was acquitted of a separate charge of tampering with evidence. She faces up to 18 months in prison at sentencing, which is expected sometime in April.
Following the verdict, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer ordered Gutierrez Reed remanded into custody. As her attorney, Monnica Barreras, rubbed her back to comfort her, bailiffs led her away.
Outside the First Judicial District courthouse in Santa Fe, N.M., juror Alberto Sanchez told reporters that the jury reached a “fair” verdict.
“Someone died,” Sanchez said. “You gotta take responsibility. Especially when you’re handling weapons and you’re in charge of those. That’s your job.

Oscar Snubs: 10 Actors Denied Their Worthy Oscar Best Actor and Best Actress Awards (In No Specific Order) Ethan Hawke
With four nominations and a league of amazing films under his belt, it is both a shame and a surprise that we haven’t seen an oscar in Ethan Hawke’s hands. Wearing many hats, Hawke is known for directing and writing alongside his acting career. My first introduction to Ethan Hawke was Reality Bites, also starring the intriguing Winona Ryder and Ben Stiller.
Quite a poignant film for these trying times, as the theme revolves around young adults trying to forge their path in a world where entry-level jobs are unpromising--even with a degree it seems bleak to find a respectable career coming out of college. The Avatar: The Last Airbender universe has introduced fans to some of the most intriguing characters to have ever been created. While the leading team including Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Aang’s flying bison Appa, is interesting on its own, there are other characters as well who are more amusing than the rest. One of these is Avatar Kyoshi, whom fans call the most violent airbender.
The Avatar: The Last Airbender Universe
However, while Kyoshi is highly perceived by the audiences to be the true owner of this title after getting acquainted with all the ruthless acts she pulls in the series, there is another character who is more brutal than her: the Air Nomad before Aang, Yangchen. In fact, Yangchen’s inhumanity goes to such an extent that if the series showed her, Kyoshi would look like a cuddly bear in front of her!

Mason Radcliffe Turns Heads from Minute One Remember when Mason Radcliffe first swaggered onto Coronation Street? That was a classic ‘bad boy’ move if I’ve ever seen one. With a family reputation that’s more notorious than my search history, the Radcliffes set the stage for Mason’s grand entrance. Dylan Wilson might have thought he was making a friend, but as the saying goes, with friends like Mason, who needs enemies? The beefcake’s arrival was nothing short of a soap opera spectacle, and viewers have been watching Liam Connor and Dylan get corrupted by his influence ever since. “His horrible behaviour...

Rita McKenzie, known for staging the longest-running one-woman show in theatrical history, died Feb. 17 in Los Angeles days before her 77th birthday. She succumbed to what her family described as a long-term illness.
A powerhouse stage voice and theatrical personality, McKenzie’s 1988 off-Broadway one-woman show, Ethel Merman’s Broadway, became the longest-running one- woman show in theatrical history.
McKenzie had a wide theatrical resume. She played Lita Encore in the Los Angeles premiere of Ruthless! The Musical and reprised the role in the recent New York revival of the show.
She also performed a wide range of stage roles throughout the U..S , including Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes!, appeared in the 50th Anniversary tour of Annie Get Your Gun, played Rose in Gypsy, and starred in a three-year U.S. tour of Neil Simon’s The Female Odd Couple, co-starring with Barbara Eden.

A bit of directorial zest, a serviceable lead and some Dirty Dozen energy are the only weapons in the arsenal of this otherwise plotless movie
Here’s yet another low-budget, straight-to-streaming British second world war flick: just as much of a men-on-a-mission throwback as last month’s War Blade, but a few notches more competent thanks to a more compact setup, occasional bursts of galvanic film-making from director Bill Thomas, and a grimier tone that is more Dirty Dozen than Saving Private Ryan.
It’s backs-to-the-wall time; Sergeant Mason (James Oliver Wheatley) and his not-especially-crack commando squad bungle a raid on a Nazi convoy and find themselves running across Normandy from an ever-growing pack of Wehrmacht. Retreating to a shabby farmhouse, they dig in for the imminent siege, despite the reluctance of Belgian owner Julien (Allan Relph), who doesn’t fancy being labelled as a partisan. Julien is also hiding a secret there,...

While Calamity Jane does not offer much, it is, in all fairness, a decent twist to the white male-led genre. Starring Emily Bett Rickards as the female gunslinger, this movie follows similar tropes but from a female perspective.
