Spoiler Alert: This article includes details of Sunday’s series finale of Showtime’s docuseries The Circus.
Showtime’s The Circus launched eight years ago with a title that suggested politics infused with a bit of crazy spectacle, but it ended tonight with anxiety, angst and even a sense of dread for what’s ahead.
The docuseries wrapped up after an eventful week: Donald Trump testifying in his civil trial, off-year elections that saw some unexpected Democratic wins and a Republican debate that may ultimately prove to be irrelevant.
But what stood out in the episode were a series of interviews from figures across the political spectrum, which has refracted quite a bit since The Circus debuted. The finale reflected the precarious state of politics, driven largely by the rise and endurance of Donald Trump and the reaction against him and his movement.

“The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth” will conclude with its eighth season, Showtime announced on Tuesday. The series finale episode is scheduled to arrive on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. Et/Pt.
Hosted by John Heilemann, Mark McKinnon, and Jennifer Palmieri, the four-time Emmy nominated political docuseries offered viewers a deeper look at the nation’s biggest political stories inside the beltway from Donald Trump’s unexpected presidential victory and his contentious time in office, to the polarizing politics of the pandemic, the 2020 election and ensuing insurrection on Capitol Hill, as well as Biden’s presidency at a time of international turmoil.
“When we started ‘The Circus’ in 2016, we thought it would be a one-and-done deal. Eight seasons and 130 episodes later, we’re still agog that Showtime gave us the trust and support that kept us cranking on this long, strange trip — and let us prove that our idea of doing a weekly,...

The Circus, the Showtime docuseries that presented the chaotic world of politics in a weekly narrative, is ending its run after eight seasons and 130 episodes.
The show, with regular host correspondents are Mark McKinnon, John Heilemann and Jennifer Palmieri, will have its final episode on Sunday on Paramount+ with Showtime and Showtime linear.
Showtime decided not to renew the series amid changes at the premium network. One of the big champions of the show, David Nevins, departed last year.
The Circus is ending just on the cusp of the 2024 presidential cycle, in what might be a fight-to-the-finish rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, the latter of whom is likely to spend the better part of the year in court facing criminal charges.
The show’s hosts haven’t foreclosed the possibility of continuing on another platform, but they gave credit to Showtime for embracing the idea for The Circus and staying with it.

With Republicans claiming that the plea deal offered to and accepted by Hunter Biden was “a sweetheart deal,” the hosts of “Morning Joe” are firing back. During Wednesday morning’s episode of the MSNBC talk show, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski ran down a laundry list of actions by the Trump kids that they argued deserved just as much criticism.
After a five-year investigation into his actions — so, yes, beginning during the Trump administration — Hunter Biden will plead guilty to tax evasion and will avoid being charged for unlawful purchase of a firearm. He also won’t face any jail time for his actions. You can read more in-depth about it here, but Republicans aren’t happy, saying Hunter Biden got nothing more than “a slap on the wrist” because he’s the president’s son.
“Just putting it out there, Ivanka and Jared, like, worked in the White House.

Russell Brand and Sen. Bernie Sanders are mad as hell, and they don’t want you to take it anymore. That sums up Friday’s Real Time with Bill Maher, as the actor/comedian and the politician railed against the machine and said the system has to be changed to give a voice to the working class.
Maher, for once, largely let them have at it. He took issue with a few things Brand said, and questioned what Sanders is proposing. But neither he nor panel guest John Heilemann from Showtime’s “The Circus” could mount a strong attack on the fire hose of information both guests were spewing.
Sanders is out promoting his new book, It’s Ok to be Angry About Capitalism. He said that we need “the right mix” in our economic system, since we “have more income inequality in wealth than we’ve ever had.” That...

CNN has enlisted a new executive to help it generate programming ideas.
Ryan Kadro, a veteran of “CBS This Morning” and several digital ventures, is set to join CNN as a senior vice president of content strategy, overseeing the development of new programming such as a revamped morning show and other new concepts, according to a spokesperson for the network and two other people familiar with the matter.
Kadro is a former lieutenant to Chris Licht, the CEO of CNN, and succeeded him as executive producer after he left the CBS morning program to work with Stephen Colbert on CBS’ “Late Show.”
His hire puts a trusted executive in place to create programming in which Licht is said to have a strong interest. Licht, who helped launch “Morning Joe” and the most recent iteration of “CBS This Morning,” is said to be eager to revamp to play more robustly against the A.

Alex Wagner has been picked to succeed Rachel Maddow in Maddow’s lynchpin 9 p.m. time slot at MSNBC. Wagner, a political veteran who recently returned to MSNBC as a senior political analyst and guest anchor in February, will host a show Tuesday-Fridays, with Maddow to continue on Mondays.
The new show is set to debut August 16, just in time for the heat of the midterm elections.
The New York Times, which broke the news Monday, said the Maddow-hosted show on Mondays will continue to to be titled The Rachel Maddow Show. A name for Wagner’s show is Tbd.

In the initial hours after the horrific Texas school massacre, in which 18 children and one adult was killed, CNN’s Jake Tapper noted that politicians’ expressions of thoughts and prayers “has sadly become a cliche at this point.”
But even calling it a cliche seems like a cliche, because the mass shootings, and school massacres in particular, keep happening.
Ed Lavandera, covering the shooting for CNN, was able to give some insight to a reunification center that had been set up for parents at Ross Elementary, as he recalled the same set up for Sandy Hook Elementary. “You could hear the yelling and screaming of the parents who were there,” he said.
Later in the evening, one local reporter at the scene of the Texas shootings, Leigh Waldman of Ksat-tv in San Antonio, wrote on Twitter, “We just heard screams inside the civic center. Yet another family hearing the worst news possible.

Bill Maher has Oscar fever, as he admitted at the top of his HBO Real Time on Friday. The malady always makes him think of his mortgage. That’s because “it seems to last 30 years and I have a very low interest rate.”
There are a lot of remakes in this year’s field for Best Picture, Maher noted. That includes Nightmare Alley, which is also the Republican plan for abortion, he claimed.
Maher also touched on what may be the biggest surprise of the Oscars – that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky might appear. “He thinks Putin is a bloodthirsty maniac,” Maher observed. “Wait til he sees Twitter on Oscar night..” If Zelensky doesn’t make it, the Academy Awards has a backup plan in a similar vein: Nic Cage, “Who has survived a lot of bombs.”

A bevy of big media players are eager to win a growing battle to provide consumers with streaming news, but John Heilemann has a message for them: Don’t count out smaller competitors.
Heilemann’s “The Recount,” a media outlet founded with entrepreneur John Battelle in 2019, is hiring its first chief content officer in a bid to gain new traction with streaming-news aficionados eager for smarter analysis in critical news categories like politics and sports. Ryan Kadro, the former executive producer of “CBS This Morning” and, more recently, head of news programming for the short-form video service Quibi, is taking on the role and will oversee day -to-day editorial production at “The Recount,” which features programming from Heilemann, Jennifer Palmieri and Reena Ninan, among others.
“Ryan has unique experience,” with history in traditional TV news as well as a recent entrepreneurial venture with Quibi, says Heilemann, in a recent interview.

John Heilemann is writing a book about the 2020 election and Joe Biden’s rise to the Presidency, and Showtime, home to his series The Circus, has optioned the screen rights.
Heilemann has previously co-written books Game Change and Double Down, accounts of the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections, respectively. HBO adapted Game Change, which starred Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin, into a television movie.
He was set to write a 2016 edition of the franchise but the book, and the subsequent HBO Films adaptation, was cancelled after his co-author Mark Halperin was accused of sexual harassment.
Heilemann’s upcoming book will be published by Simon & Schuster, the publishing company that ViacomCBS is selling to Penguin Random House.
It will be a first-hand account of Biden’s triumph, both against a sprawling field of Democratic rivals and then Donald Trump.

Stephen Colbert told Showtime viewers to “hold on tight” as the presidential election remained in the balance.
The host of Stephen Colbert’s Election Night 2020: Democracy’s Last Stand: Building Back America Great Again Better 2020 oversaw a slightly chaotic live show with Zoom guests, a live spot on CBS News and a five-minute version of Our Cartoon President entitled “Election Knight Rises.”
The Late Show host joked that the latter might now get another season if President Donald Trump wins another four years.
“I’m happy to be on Showtime, [but] holy sh*t, this is a weird f*cking election,” he said at the top of the show, which ran for an hour and 15 minutes on the premium cable network.
The show opened with the Our Cartoon President segment, including a naked Bill Barr and a fight between Trump and Joe Biden. “You lose, Joe,” said the animated President.

Stephen Colbert kicked off his live election night special with an extended animated “My Cartoon President” bit which saw Donald Trump floating away with a giant balloon, leaving Joe Biden the supposed winner. However, right as the balloon passed the White House, it popped, and Biden realized that many votes still needed to be counted if he was going to oust the incumbent.
And sure enough, as Colbert and fellow late-night host Trevor Noah went live at 11 p.m. Et/Pt the race was far too early and too close to call.
When Colbert appeared in person on Showtime, he was sat in an Oval Office set with only his wife and a couple of masked cameramen in the room. Both Colbert and “The Daily Show” host are having to walk the comedy tightrope of what their viewers are going to find funny on a night when their nerves are likely in shreds.

Four years ago, Stephen Colbert stood onstage, looked out at his hopeful audience and told them that they didn’t know yet who had won the 2016 presidential election. “But for the life of me,” he continued, “I cannot understand how Trump’s candidacy even got this far.”
Cut to: Jeff Goldblum, standing to the side with a pensive look on his infamously elastic face. “Well, I’ll tell you, Stephen,” he said, before launching into a monologue about the GOP and chaos theory that ended in a “Jurassic Park” line (you probably know the one). By the time a shellshocked Colbert and Goldblum talked later on in the show, Trump had won Florida and was well on his way to becoming President of the United States. Colbert’s earlier setup, it turned out, wasn’t for a joke at all: he didn’t understand how Trump’s candidacy had gotten that far,...

Just in case you need a pick-me-up during the week before the election, Tenacious D has you covered with a positively delightful cover of “The Time Warp” from “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Just in time for Halloween! Watch it above.
Of course, those of you reading this know what we’re talking about — it’s the fourth song in the cult classic movie musical, and the one sung by Riff Raff, Magenta and Columbia just as Brad and Janet have entered Dr. Frank-n-Furter’s creepy castle. The song is a glam rock tribute to the many rock and roll songs about dance crazes and mainly just describes a dance called The Time Warp with very, very easy to follow instructions: Jump to the left, step to the right, put your hands on your hips, bend your knees in time, then pelvic thrust a whole bunch of times.

The famous red lips haven’t turned blue in the newly adapted “Rocky Horror Picture Show” imagery because they’ve spent too much time on the slab. The color scheme is emblematic of Tenacious D’s goal in doing an all-star remake of “The Time Warp” that has a “Rock-y the Vote” message — specifically, to vote blue or, as the revised lyrics have it, make “a jump to the left and not a step to the right.”
Beyond incorporating clips from the original 1975 movie musical, Jack Black and Kyle Gass enlisted a couple of key Democratic politicos for the new music video — former presidential candidates Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg — as well as a range of celebrities including George Takei, Phoebe Bridgers, Jamie Lee Curtis and King Princess.

In 2016, Stephen Colbert hosted a memorable, if uncomfortable, election night special on the evening of November 8th. Expecting a landslide victory for Hillary Clinton, the mood of the special shifted as the politically liberal Colbert, his guests, and his audience slowly realized that Donald Trump would be claiming victory over the presidency.
Somehow, that hasn’t dissuaded Colbert from doing it again. The Late Show host announced on Monday that he’d be hosting a 2020 election night special on Showtime on Tuesday, November 3rd, beginning at 11:00 p.m. Et.

The Circus, Showtime’s political docuseries, is returning for the second half of its fifth season on August 16. Co-host John Heilemann said the show likely will look different as a result of the production challenges faced shooting a series during the coronavirus pandemic.

The news anchors and network producers trekking to Iowa this weekend for the Iowa caucuses will be just at the start of what will be a frenetic schedule of impactful breaking news events.
On Sunday is the Super Bowl, which will feature Sean Hannity’s pre-game interview with Trump. On Monday is the caucus. The State of the Union is on Tuesday, followed by the Senate’s final impeachment vote on Wednesday and the ABC News/Wmur-tv/Apple News New Hampshire debate on Friday. The Oscars follow soon after on Feb. 9 — and it’s likely to have some kind of political tinge.
“It is the most intense period I can ever recall in politics,” ABC News’s political director Rick Klein said from Des Moines. “It is uncanny how many things are converging as big storylines at the same time.”

Showtime’s The Circus returns on Sunday, and a focus on the debut is on the senators running for president who are being forced to leave the campaign trail to be present for the impeachment trial of Donald Trump.
In one clip, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-mn) is shown sitting down to hold a “tele-town hall” in Washington last week after the day’s marathon impeachment proceedings wrapped up.
It’s 9:45 p.m. Et, and Klobuchar shows a bit of fatigued humor after the long day.
“Looking forward to talking to everyone in Iowa. Hopefully we don’t wake anyone up and piss them off,” Klobuchar says as she sits down to talk to the voters.
Told that 12,000 people were on the call, Klobuchar says, “Ok, that is really a lot,” she says, laughing and rubbing her eye. “Ok I better get my act together now… Oh, shorter answers.”

Though the network will not air live coverage during the election cycle, Showtime still very much so intends to have its finger on the political pulse, doubling its dose of “The Circus” during this presidential election year.
“Between ‘The Circus,’ ‘Our Cartoon President,’ and ‘Desus & Mero,’ we feel like we’ll have a very steady stream of either real coverage or satirical coverage,” Showtime entertainment co-head Jana Winograde told Variety on Monday. “One of the things we love about all of those shows are they give us an always-on presence. They’re very well-timed for the political cycle this year to make sure that we’re on when the stories are on that need to be told. And in between we have ‘Vice.’
“The Circus” will debut this season on Jan. 26, a week before the Iowa caucus on Feb. 3, and will cluster episodes around primaries, conventions and elections.

Showtime has extended the number of episodes for animated series Our Cartoon President so that it can cover the forthcoming Presidential Election alongside doc series The Circus.
The third season of Our Cartoon President, which is exec produced by Stephen Colbert, launches on January 26. The series, which is produced by CBS Television Studios, follows the “tru-ish misadventures” of the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, and his merry band of advisors and family members.
The first season of the show introduced audiences to Trump’s attempts at “winning” the State of the Union address, comforting disaster victims and rolling back President Obama’s accomplishments, while season two has taken aim at the crowded Democratic presidential primary field.
The fifth season of The Circus (left) also airs on January 26. Heading back to town just in time for the Donald Trump impeachment inquiry, the series, which is hosted by John Heilemann,...

The Circus is coming back to town, just in time for the Donald Trump impeachment inquiry. Showtime said today that Season 5 of its political documentary seires hosted by John Heilemann, Mark McKinnon and Alex Wagner will premiere at 8 p.m. Sunday, January 26.
After covering the burgeoning field of Democratic presidential candidates and their campaigns around the country, along with the Ukraine scandal that led to the historic impeachment inquiry into Trump’s conduct, Season 4 had its finale on November 10.
Of course, plenty has happened in Washington, D.C., since then — at least one or two things that you might have heard about — and even more era-defining news will be made in the weeks before the documentary series’ late-January return. Along with the impeachment ruckus, the series’ new will cover the first caucus and primary voting as Democrats decide who will face Trump in November. Assuming, as we should, that he...

Exclusive: The first round of public impeachment hearings wrapped up on November 21, but today saw the debut of a new video venture examining the process to potentially extradite Donald Trump from the Oval Office.
Moving in where perhaps Meet The Press fears to tread, this morning The Circus co-host John Heilemann and former Acting Solicitor General and NBC/MSNBC analyst Neal Katyal launch The I-Word on The Recount site and app.
As the name more than suggests, the 15-minute weekly series will focus on the ever-expanding House of Representatives inquiry into the former Celebrity Apprentice host’s attempts to allegedly strong arm the newly installed Ukrainian government to start probing ex-vp Joe Biden and his family. As one would expect from Game Change co-author, Wu-Tang Clan megafan and The Recount editor-in-chief Heilemann, the first original content series from the fairly recently premiering mobile platform aims to stir up the partisan Kool-Aid

It was a day filled with political news, ranging from the ongoing impeachment inquiry this morning through tonight’s Democratic presidential candidate debates. The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert chose to do post-debate live events on broadcast television, while Late Night’s Seth Meyers posted online and focused a long segment on the earlier happenings.
Colbert also had a segment where audience questions were sent for analysis by Showtime’s The Circus co-hosts John Heilemann and Alex Wagner.
Meanwhile, Seth Meyers chose to focus on the Gordon Sondland testimony at the impeachment inquiry earlier today.
