After knocking her set out of the park at last week’s roast of Tom Brady, comedian Nikki Glaser has been discussing the controversial live TV event, including new regrets from the former New England Patriots quarterback to the live ribbing marathon, and how she received a note from Kim Kardashian calling the experience a form of “abuse.”
Following the May 6 roast of The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady, Brady said on The Pivot Podcast that he enjoyed when comedians took humorous jabs about nearly all aspects of his life but that he didn’t care for the jabs aimed at his family, adding that the comments impacted his children, “the people [he] care[s] about most in the world.”
“I feel like maybe he didn’t consider the backlash from his family and how it would affect them, and I do understand that,” Glaser said on Wednesday’s Today with Hoda and Jenna.

Twenty-five years ago, director Stephen Sommers turned a respected, but admittedly pretty dusty, Universal horror movie into a rip-roarin’ adventure. It’s fair to say all these years later that 1999’s The Mummy the best Indiana Jones movie not directed by Steven Spielberg. And yet, when Universal wanted to remake it again, they didn’t even bother to consult Sommers.
Is it any wonder, then, that 2017’s The Mummy was a colossal flop?
Talking with Sommers about the 25th anniversary of The Mummy ’99, The Hollywood Reporter asked if he had any involvement with the 2017 film, to which the director gave a short, clear response.
“No,” he answered. “Actually, I was kind of insulted because the writers and director of that Tom Cruise one, no one ever contacted me. I contact people if I was going to take over somebody’s thing.”
Perhaps the most surprising part of that statement is...

Exclusive: The package market is flourishing after the Chris Farley package hit the town Friday morning, and it looks to get even busier as sources tell Deadline an untitled comedy pitch package is making the rounds with Radio Silence attached to direct, Andy Samberg’s Party Over Here banner producing and Andrew Lanham on board to pen the script.
The project would be developed as a potential starring vehicle for Samberg.
Plot details are unknown other then it being described as a robot comedy. Sources say at least four offers are on the table in the seven-figure range, with possibly more on the way.
Sandberg, the former SNL castmember also known for his roles in his comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine and comedy feature Palm Springs, was most recently seen in the pic Self-Reliance opposite Jake Johnson. For Radio Silence, its next horror thriller Abigail bows next week.
We will update once the package lands.

The friendships on New Girl are just as important to the series as the romantic relationships. The show wouldn’t be what it is without the unique dynamics of the central friend group, both as a whole and within different pairings. Some friendships on the show are more expected, like Cece (Hannah Simone) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel), and are there from the beginning to the end of the series. Others kind of appear out of nowhere, like Nick (Jake Johnson) and Tran (Ralph Ahn), and yet it’s hard to imagine the show without them.
New Girl is a great reminder at how important it is to let comedies explore relationships both within and outside of the core friend group. It’s one thing to see how the characters get along as a whole, but pairing people off who may or may not have much in common initially is an...

Zooey Deschanel is widely recognized for her deadpan comedy roles but the actress expanded her portfolio by working in dramatic roles with projects like Manic (2001), All the Real Girls (2003), and The Driftless Area (2015). However, portraying the role of Jess Day on the Fox sitcom, New Girl was what fans usually remember her by, since she was one of the lead cast, who was there from the beginning to the end of the series.

TV crossovers and interconnected universes are the best things when it comes to fandom. But they can be super tricky, for it involves combining separate ongoing storylines into one project. It’s a daunting task for the creative group, which if not done correctly can end up being like Zooey Deschanel’s New Girl and Brooklyn 99 crossover.

Although people appreciated watching Zooey Deschanel in Brooklyn 99, it wasn’t a great idea to combine the comedy styles of the two shows. Further, what created the biggest mess out of the crossover was featuring the same actors in different roles in the two shows.

The rules are simple: Survive 30 days while being hunted by people attempting to kill you, and win one million dollars. As long as you're with another person, the hunters will leave you alone. This is the proposition presented to Tommy Walcott by a paid-to-be-there Andy Samberg in the Hulu film "Self Reliance." Written, directed, produced, and starring Jake Johnson, "Self Reliance" taps into the thrilling anticipation of David Fincher's "The Game," but with a lighthearted sense of humor and hell of a lot of heart that could only come from the guy who gave us Nick Miller on "New Girl" and one of the best episodes of "Mythic Quest."
Tommy decides to exploit the loophole by paying a transient man named James/Walter (Biff Wiff) to stay with him 24/7. He also encounters a woman named Maddy (Anna Kendrick) who is also playing the game, and who Tommy starts to...

A mother’s intuition saved Jake Johnson‘s life when he was a kid.
In a new interview, the 45-year-old New Girl actor shared that his mom’s “gut feeling” saved him from possibly getting killed in a school shooting back in 1988.
“I was sitting next to my mom, I was in fourth grade,” Jake recalled while appearing on the Dope as Usual podcast. “Out of nowhere, my mother turns to me and goes, ‘You’re not going to school tomorrow.’”

“And I go ‘huh,’” Jake continued. “With my mom growing up, when she said something that’s just how it went down.”
Jake, who was around nine or 10 at the time, first agreed not to go to school, but then reminded his mom that his class was going on a field trip the next day, so he argued that he wouldn’t physically be in school.

We had the pleasure of discussing Self Reliance with Jake Johnson and his co-star, Biff Wiff, who, in the film, form an unlikely friendship to keep Johnson’s character from getting killed by mysterious assassins.

Jake Johnson’s directorial debut, Self Reliance, is here, but some might misinterpret its ending.
The Hulu movie follows Johnson’s Tommy Walcott, a struggling middle-aged man stumbling through life. He doesn't have a very strong career path, and he’s still not over his ex, who recently broke up with him, and he lives with his mom.
His life gets an injection of excitement when Tommy is picked up by actor Andy Samberg, who tells him that he’s been chosen to participate in a new game. It's later revealed the competition, which is hosted on the Dark Web, requires Tommy to stay alive for 30 days, and if he does, he wins one million dollars.

And now, we wait. The bulk of precursor nominations have poured in, and Oscar voting is newly underway. Aside from the final BAFTA roster, most of what’s left is merely a swift march to January 23, nomination day. A couple of films in particular are making well-timed streaming premieres that function as end-of-the-road campaign strategies.
The contender to stream this week: “Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project”
This Oscar-shortlisted documentary co-directed by spouses Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson, who also made 2013’s “American Promise,” follows the eponymous poet and activist through years of civil-rights evolutions. If Black women can withstand the hardships of Earth, Giovanni posits, maybe they can survive in space, too. “Going to Mars” is more experimental than the average biography, which makes sense for such an elusive figure. The film won a jury prize at Sundance and has an Independent Spirit Award nomination. It’s newly streaming on Max.

As a “45-year-old white dude,” he says, he knows that opportunities to direct for the big screen aren’t going to come along often. “In terms of directing, I’m not breaking at this point,” Johnson tells Deadline. “I’ve been on TV for too long. I’m not a new, young, exciting talent out of Sundance with a scarf where you go, ‘That’s a beautiful short, let’s see what he has.'” The town has seen what I do.”
So when the opportunity came for the actor to make his directorial debut with Self Reliance, a comedic thriller co-starring Anna Kendrick that premiered at last year’s SXSW, he knew he’d bring all the “tones and ideas” that had been taking up space in his mind for years and squeeze them into one movie.

Through four seasons, the cast of Netflix’s mega-hit Stranger Things has grown so large and unwieldy that it seemed unlikely that every actor would return for the fifth and final season. Well sure enough, we’ve now received confirmation that Stranger Things season 5 will be leaving at least one character out.
In an interview with the Steve Varley Show, actor Eduardo Franco says he never received a call from Netflix, making it unlikely that his character Argyle will return – especially since production on season 5 is now underway again following strike delays.

A lot of people only think of Jake Johnson as the comedic actor who has shown up in a number of big projects over the years. But before all of that, he got his start as a writer in New York City. It’s just his time as a writer was overshadowed by his growing acting career. But for “Self Reliance,” his new Hulu film arriving this week, Johnson is not only returning to writing, but he also directed the film, as well.

Yet another film I knew nothing about before watching to continue New Years viewings. Yet another feature directorial debut, this time from American actor Jake Johnson. Yet another movie that caught my eye due to its interesting cast. After Night Swim and Role Play at the start of 2024, it's time for Self Reliance to try to surprise me with a high-concept premise that promises entertainment from all parts of the comedy-thriller spectrum. The movie's plot follows Tommy Walcott, portrayed by Johnson himself, a lonely man trapped in the monotony of his daily life who seizes the opportunity to participate in a dark web reality show where he must survive 30 days without being killed by others – addressed as the "hunters" – and win a million dollars. The catch? Participants can only be attacked when they're completely alone. This loophole is obviously explored by the character, who begins a self-discovery adventure within a life-and-death scenario.

Plot: When Tommy Walcott is invited into a limo by famous actor Andy Samberg, his dull life takes a thrilling turn. Tommy is offered a chance to win a million dollars in a dark web reality TV show, where assassins from all over the world attempt to kill him for 30 days. The catch? He can’t be killed if he’s not entirely alone, leading him to recruit an unlikely team to help him survive.
Review: Jake Johnson is hilarious. After his breakout role as Nick Miller on Fox sitcom New Girl, Johnson has appeared alongside Tom Cruise in The Mummy, Chris Pratt in the Jurassic World franchise, and voicing Peter B. Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse. While Johnson has written several films, including Digging for Fire, Win It All, and Ride the Eagle, he makes his directorial debut with the new film Self Reliance.

The Sony animated films Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse have both received immense praise from audiences and critics. The last film ended on a cliffhanger and promised an epic conclusion to the trilogy, but Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which was supposed to come out this March, was delayed a few months ago. Phil Lord and Chris Miller explained that they delayed the film in order to maintain the same high-quality bar they set with the other movies. Although Lord and Miller are hard at work on the third film, Jake Johnson, who voices Peter Parker, says he’s yet to start recording dialogue for the film, making it seem as though the delay will be longer than expected.

Minx didn’t have much luck. After being canceled by HBO Max after one season, the erotic comedy was saved by Starz, but Minx has been canceled yet again following its second season.
The news isn’t all that surprising, but still a blow for fans of the series. Set in 1970s Los Angeles, Minx stars Ophelia Lovibond as Joyce, an “earnest young feminist who joins forces with low-rent publisher (Jake Johnson) to create the first erotic magazine for women.” In addition to Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson, Minx also stars Idara Victor, Jessica Lowe, Lennon Parham, Michael Angarano, and Oscar Montoya. The first season stands at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, although its audience score is much lower.

Minx has been canceled for the second time.
The series was originally made at HBO Max, but was canceled by the streamer after the second season had already been produced. Starz saved the show and aired the second season, but the network has opted to not give the show a third season.
While Max paid to produce the second season, Starz’s parent company Lionsgate paid for the marketing budget and for the final days of production.
There’s a positive though.

Starz does not plan on removing the series from its app or other streaming platforms, so fans will be able to continue watching the two seasons, according to THR.
Just a couple weeks ago, the show’s star Jake Johnson spoke out in a new interview and explained why he didn’t think the show would get renewed.

Starz will not be proceeding with a third season of 1970s-set series Minx.
The news is not surprising. Minx star Jake Johnson told Deadline last month that he did not expect a Season 3 renewal for the period erotic comedy, whose Season 2 finale aired Sept. 8.
Starz last January stepped in to rescue Minx, starring Ophelia Lovibond and Johnson, following the series’ cancellation by Max (then HBO Max) as part of cost-cutting tax write-offs while production was wrapping on Season 2. The premium network, which is in the process of cutting ties with owner Lionsgate, picked up both Season 1 and the unaired Season 2 of Minx, which is produced by Lionsgate Television. Both seasons will remain on the Starz app and all major platforms.

Bottom Dollar is closing shop.
Starz has opted to cancel Minx, the comedy about the first porn magazine for women, after a two-season run. The news comes after the series from creator Ellen Rapoport was originally developed for Warner Bros. Discovery streamer Max, which aired the first season and paid for a second before ultimately scrapping the show as a tax write-off with mere days remaining before production on the sophomore run was completed.
Minx was shopped by producers Lionsgate Television with the studio ultimately setting up the comedy starring Jake Johnson and Ophelia Lovibond at Starz, which is currently controlled by its parent company, Lionsgate. Max effectively paid to produce season two, with Lionsgate footing the bill to complete production and market season two. The second season premiered in July, in the thick of the writers and performers’ strikes making it challenging for cast members and producers to promote the show’s return.

“Minx” has been canceled at Starz, Variety has learned.
This now marks the second time the series has been canceled. The first season of the comedy originally aired on Max, where it was renewed for a second season before it was canceled in a cost-cutting move.
Starz then announced that they had acquired the second season of the show and would air it along with the first. Season 2 debuted on Starz on July 21. Both seasons remain available to stream on the Starz app and platforms.
The show received positive reviews from critics, holding an average critical approval rating of 93% over both seasons on Rotten Tomatoes. It failed to find a large audience, however, with the linear airings on Starz of Season 2 averaging less than 100,000 viewers per episode. There is no streaming viewership data publicly available for the series.

Tommy Walcott (Jake Johnson) is stuck in a rut. Perpetually bored, he spends his days in a repetitive, lonely routine of work, working out, and watching old movies. Every now and then, he’ll make his way over to his ex-girlfriend’s house, but he always ends up slinking home without finding the courage to knock on the door. He’s a man crying out for someone to inject some intrigue into his life, and one day that cry is answered. By Andy Samberg.
The Brooklyn Nine-Nine star rolls up in a limousine and offers Tommy the chance to compete in a dark web game show. The rules are simple: For 30 days, Tommy will be hunted by anonymous killers from across the world, with a million-dollar prize up for grabs if he can survive until the end. What To Watch This Weekend Till January, 7th 2024 ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Much like its predecessor, this week leaves audiences craving that elusive spark of innovation in the ever-evolving landscape of cinematic offerings. A notable absence of animated content is a stark reality, but fear not, for the enigmatic allure of mystery thrillers takes center stage. Amidst the somewhat lackluster releases, Sky Cinema treats us to a comedic escape with “Arthur’s Whisky,” a film exclusively available through subscription. At the same time, the rest of the streaming lineup demands a commitment of a different kind – the decision to purchase or rent.
However, before the disappointment, let’s pivot to the silver lining in serialized storytelling. Netflix beckons us with the binge-worthy allure of “Fool Me Once,” offering a glimmer of hope amid the scarcity. Meanwhile, stalwarts like “Fargo” and “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” continue to grace our screens with fresh episodes,...

As the aftereffects of the writers’ and actors’ strikes hit streaming in a big way, there’s not a lot of new content to offer subscribers early in 2024. Hulu still has some interesting things to offer in January, though.
