How Sarfarosh changed the patriotic film for good. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Not all patriotic movies mentioned the enemy nation by name. It was all about a ‘dushmun desh’ with junior artistes with oriental features and actors made to resemble them, for China (to whom we lost in 1962) was the major enemy! Pakistan as an enemy was rare.
All that changed after Border in 1997, which was a dramatized version of the Longowal battle in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Obviously, Pakistan had to be named and shown here. But Sarfarosh, released in 1999, was the first fictional drama to show our neighboring country openly as the ‘villain’ waging proxy wars. Eerily, the Kargil conflict happened within weeks of its release. And despite our then-Prime Minister’s friendly overtures to them, our recalcitrant neighbour continues to foster terror and express that they want Kashmir!

Nishtha Jain’s “Farming the Revolution” — winner of the best international feature documentary prize at Hot Docs — captures the vast emotional scope of revolutionary movements. Chronicling the lengthy stand-off between Indian farmers and the Modi government, during which tens of thousands of Sikh and Punjabi farm workers occupied highways and state borders, the film is remarkable in its audio-visual inquiry into protest as a cultural movement, and in its excavation of the emotional highs and lows involved in making lasting change.
Over eight months between 2020 and 2021, millions of people would weave in and out of these caravans of trucks and makeshift houses surrounding New Delhi, in the hope of curbing new laws that would open Indian agriculture to predatory corporate interests while plunging farmers into poverty. Jain captures the sweeping magnitude of the protests through overhead drone shots and careful compositions on the ground — she often shoots large crowds from just above eye level,...

Eminent Indian documentarian Nishtha Jain’s latest effort is an account of the epic, year-long farmers’ protest that took place in India in 2020-21.
“Farming the Revolution,” which world premieres at Hot Docs, follows the millions of Indian farmers who gathered during the height of Covid-19 lockdown at the borders of the country’s capital, Delhi, to protest against newly enacted farm laws. The farmers believed that if implemented, these laws would negatively impact the government-protected farmers’ markets, leaving them to the vagaries of the free market.
Jain is known for jute weaving documentary “The Golden Thread,” which won the top prize at Bergamo this year and multiple award-winning woman empowerment film “Gulabi Gang” (2012).
“It was the Covid year. We had already witnessed heart-rending scenes when the sudden announcement of all-India lockdown saw millions of Indian migrant workers walk to their homes thousands of miles away from the cities. A...

Best known for his Punjabi films ‘Anhe Ghore Da Daan’ and ‘Chauthi Koot’ which premiered at Venice and Cannes Film Festivals respectively, filmmaker Gurvinder Singh is all set to make a web series on revolutionary Bhagat Singh.
Stressing that he is still relevant and will continue to remain so, Singh said, “The revolutionary’s character has always fascinated me owing to the multiple layers he boasted of. Not many people have explored him completely. Yes, he was a revolutionary but also had a great sense of humour.”
The series will dwell upon how Bhagat Singh and his comrades ‘used’ the trial to amplify their ideas of independence.
While many other films have been made on Bhagat Singh, including ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’, the filmmaker points out that in most films, the narrative was very linear.
“Not one spelt that he was an atheist,” says this Film and Television Institute of India (Ftii) pass-out.

As India celebrates its 76th Independence Day on Monday, here are some Hindi songs that you can add to your playlist and celebrate the spirit of Independence Day.
1. Sandese Aate Hain: The first song on the list is the iconic song from ‘Border’, a timeless melody with lyrics written by Javed Akhtar, and sung by Sonu Nigam and Roopkumar Rathod. Vidyut Jammwal’s Commando 3, directed by Aditya Datt has beautiful message of unity and that in each of us there is a commando.
“Our movie, Commando 3 has a strong story line. More than an action-thriller it’s a human story. With the movie we want to convey that we all are one and there is a commando in each one of us. The way our nation comes together to help each other out during crisis is commendable. May that be giving someone a shelter during rains or Virat Kohli who is fighting on the cricket field. Commando 3 is our tribute to the commando that resides in each one of us,” says producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah.
While the movie highlights the story of a Commando who is fighting for the nation under attack there has been so many heroes who have been Commandos themselves when the need of the hour was dire.
