Nicolas Cage will not be playing Joe Exotic.
The beloved actor was set to lead an Amazon drama series based on the Texas Monthly article “Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild.”
But it sounds like the Tiger King craze is coming to a close with a thud.
“I think Amazon ultimately felt that it was material that had become past tense because it took so long for it come together,” Cage said to Variety of the decision.
“They felt at one point that it was lightning in a bottle, but that point has since faded into the distance and it’s no longer relevant.”
Indeed, the world has changed substantially since Netflix's wildly successful docu-series hit the air in 2020.
As a result, it feels like a distant memory, and it seems Amazon was concerned about investing time and money into a project...

However, per the streaming service, the 67-year-old actor had to depart the series due to a scheduling conflict. While this is certainly sad news for fans of Dennis, we couldn't be more excited about his replacement. Not only does William...

Peacock’s “Joe Exotic” series had to get a bit exotic in its casting process to fit the real-life troupe of characters chronicled in Netflix’s “Tiger King” docuseries. Fortunately, with “Saturday Night Live” standout Kate McKinnon on board from Day 1 as Carole Baskin, the scripted streaming series was off to a very good start.
Then they landed Dennis Quaid, and, well, just ask your mom what she thinks about that choice to play Rick Kirkham. Better yet, ask Rick Kirkham, Joe “Exotic” Schreibvogel’s reality TV show producer, what he thinks. However, Quaid had to step away from the role due to a scheduling conflict and was replaced with William Fichtner.
Based on the Wondery podcast “Joe Exotic,” hosted and reported by Robert Moor, the Peacock limited series will center on Carole Baskin, a big cat enthusiast, who learns that fellow exotic animal lover Schreibvogel is breeding and using his big cats for profit.

Like a stealthy tiger padding through the jungle, no one saw Netflix’s “Tiger King” coming. Once word started to spread to homebound viewers hungry for an engrossing quarantine watch, it was too late to un-see the questionable conditions the animals were kept in, and the questionable taste in tattoos of nearly everyone involved. Nielsen said that more than 34 million people watched the series in the first 10 days — more than Season 2 of “Stranger Things,” and almost as many viewers as “Stranger Things” Season 3.
It was the most tweeted-about show in the country the week after it came out, with celebrities like Chrissy Teigen, Kim Kardashian and Jared Leto weighing in. A wave of memes followed, then the announcement of an aftershow hosted by Joel McHale and TMZ’s “Tiger King: What Really Went Down?” on Fox.

Joel McHale isn’t surprised that Carole Baskin, one of the key subjects in Netflix’s smash hit docuseries “Tiger King,” refused to appear in his reunion special, “The Tiger King and I.”
Baskin has heavily criticized her portrayal on “Tiger King,” which pretty substantially laid out the case for why many people believe she was involved in the death of her first husband, Don Lewis — including Lewis’ own family.
“That whole phenomenon whether she has killed her husband has also taken on a huge life of itself,” McHale told Variety on Sunday during an Instagram Live interview. “It’s not surprising they’re not very cooperative at all.”
Does McHale believe she did it? He’s not sure — but at least based on the documentary, “she probably did.”
Of course, “Tiger King” is mostly the story of Joe Maldonado-Passage (a.k.a. Joe Exotic), the former owner of a...

Netflix's global phenomenon Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness made a roaring return for a special episode on Easter Sunday, and it was filled with the outlandish twists that defined the initial seven episodes.
The cast had no idea the series would blow up in the way that it did, but not everyone returned for the special, which was hosted by Joel McHale and titled "The Tiger King and I."
In case you've been living under a rock, we'll offer up some context here:
Joe Exotic (real name Maldonado-Passage), is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence after being convicted on 17 charges of animal abuse and two counts of murder for hire after an alleged plot murder-for-hire plot to kill Carole Baskin went sideways.
The special brought Eric Cowie, Jeff and Lauren Lowe, John Reinke, Kelci “Saff” Saffery, Josh Dial, John Finlay, and Joe Exotic TV producer Rick Kirkman to...

For all you cool cats and kittens who need more “Tiger King,” Netflix delivered a bonus episode of interviews on Sunday morning.
Hosted by Joel McHale, “The Tiger King and I” aftershow brought back favorites like John Finlay, Erik Cowie and Kelci “Saff” Saffery. The “Tiger King” crew talked about how they’re getting used to their new celebrity statuses and revealed a few secrets that didn’t make it into the show.
Here are the highlights from the interviews.
Joe Exotic is terrified of big cats
The show saved the best interview for last as TV producer Rick Kirkham dropped a few bombshells, including that his wannabe TV star was scared of his own animals. Joe Exotic (whose real name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage) would regularly pose with two tigers who were blind and tranquilized, posing no threat to him.

The world’s latest obsession is Netflix documentary series Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, the story of private zoo owner Joe Exotic and his long running feud with Big Cat Rescue founder Carole Baskin which ends in a murder-for-hire plot and a 22 year prison sentence for Joe.
It’s genuinely one of the strangest, most fascinating stories to land on the streaming service – if you haven’t caught it yet, you really must.
At the end of the doc Joe was in prison, Jeff Lowe owned the zoo and was planning to transport the animals to a new location in Oklahoma and Carole was happily running Big Cat Rescue and campaigning to prevent cub petting, no longer at immediate risk of being assassinated.
Now an additional episode, entitled The Tiger King and I, has landed on Netflix. It’s hosted by Community‘s Joel McHale and is billed as an ‘aftershow’, featuring new interviews,...

Seven editors honed footage for Netflix seven-part docu-series “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness,” about the man who owns the largest collection of big cats in the U.S. The telling of the story of Joseph Maldonado-Passage, aka Joe Exotic, is a meta one, including a reality show-within-a-show, and it turns sinister very quickly. After all, there’s an attempted murder plot to sort out.
The first 10 minutes reveal how Exotic winds up in jail, an editing choice made at the behest of Netflix. “Without the promise of things getting bonkers, you don’t know if people will stay tuned,” says editor Doug Abel, the first to come on board the series, in 2017. At that time, he says, the production had a broader concept. “It was about animal trafficking,” he explains.

Claws are out on Netflix's Tiger King, and that includes those of Joe Exotic (Joseph Maldonado-Passage) himself. Besides the murder-for-hire and wildlife abuse accusations, another suspicious crime lingers around Maldonado-Passage's colorful history: the mysterious fire at his studio at the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park. Did Maldonado-Passage set that fire himself? We don't know for sure, but he would have had at least some motivation to do so.
As episode four reveals, Maldonado-Passage wanted to be a TV and radio personality, releasing country bangers back in the day. However, a mysterious fire and Carole Baskin's lawsuit would set his plans aflame. On March 26, 2015, a fire created more chaos at the G.W. Exotic Animal Park around 2:30 to 4:30 a.m. It burned seven alligators and a crocodile alive. It also destroyed Joe's studio for Joe Exotic TV. Equipment was stolen, including devices with 60,000 hours of footage documented...

Netflix's docuseries Tiger King is full of stranger-than-fiction elements, but by far some of the weirdest segments are those including Joe Exotic's music videos and attempted music career. Was Joe Exotic even singing in his music videos? Like most things to do with the controversial big-cat breeder, the story of Exotic's music videos is full of twists and fakes.
According to Slate, his songs aren't even his own. The songs that are supposedly written and performed by Joe Exotic are, in fact, written and performed by Vince Johnson and Danny Clinton, a pair of musicians from Washington. Johnson told Slate that they originally answered Exotic's ad looking for someone to write a theme song for his private zoo and for a reality TV show about him and his zoo (that storyline was also depicted in Tiger King), and they soon realized that he was simply going to take...

For a documentarian, a larger than life big cat collector who goes by “Joe Exotic” has to both be a total dream and narrative nightmare. As evidenced by the fact that he chose a name for himself that belongs more on a pack of gas station “vitamins” than to a person, the Oklahoman zookeeper is a deliberately larger-than-life figure who’s extremely self-aware about the character he’s building. He is, as he says in a commercial for his failed 2016 presidential campaign (yes), “gay…broke as hell…[and has] a judgment against me from some bitch down in Florida.” Over seven episodes, Netflix’s “Tiger King” digs into all the above, most notably his relationship with the “bitch” in question: Carol Baskin, the animal activist owner of Big Cat Rescue and Joe Exotic’s longtime object of disdain. Though the story begins with their respective love for their animals, “Tiger King” quickly...
