The extraordinary saga of Lyra and Will has finally come to an end.
On His Dark Materials Season 3 Episode 7, the Kingdom of Heaven comes to Asriel's Republic, and a great battle ensues.
This finale was an epic of war and love that gave us much-needed, satisfying closure.
Asriel finally admitted he was wrong and realized he would not live to see his glory but had to do it for Lyra.
Mrs. Coulter also knew she would never see her daughter again but understood the part she had to play in the endgame.
The juxtaposition of Mrs. Coulter and Asriel in their meetings with Metatron was so telling of both their characters.
I have devoted my entire life to science and the pursuit of truth. I swore blind that prophecies are merely stories concocted to control the credulous, and yet, here I stand, unable to avoid the prophetic truth in front of me.

Warning: contains finale spoilers for His Dark Materials season 3.
In the closing moments of Bad Wolf’s majestic adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy, a caption on screen tells us what lies ahead for Lyra and Will. After freeing the ghosts from the Land of the Dead and returning healing Dust to the ailing multiverse, the teenagers weren’t granted a happy ever after. Instead, they faced a stark reality: stay together and be complicit in the death of the multiverse, or save it and separate forever.
Dust was leaking out of the worlds into nothingness through the many windows cut between the multiverse by previous knife bearers. Some was escaping in the form of Spectres, and the loss of Dust was destroying the worlds (as seen with the Mulefas’ dying seedpod tree). The flow of Dust had to be stopped by closing every window but one.

No one is safe, and nothing is sacred.
On His Dark Materials Season 3 Episode 5, the Big Bad finally shows up -- with a bang!
Major characters are dying left and right. Beloved dead characters are returning. And, of course, we finally see the world of the seedpod-skating, talking tapir-like creatures -- the mulefa.
The mulefa are not precisely as they appear in the book, but all things considered, they are close. Like a tapir-giraffe-elephant, these magical sentient creatures have been highly anticipated by fans of the books.
They are peaceful and welcoming of Mary, who studies them diligently. Atal, the first to befriend Mary, understands that their worlds are somehow connected, and Mary may be able to help them with the "sraf" -- their word for dust. Also, how cute were the babies?!

Major finale spoilers! This is for UK viewers who have already streamed the entire Third season on bbc iplayer.
Some family TV shows exist to sell toys. Or to fill gaps between pocket money-targeting ads, and to profit from cross-promotional product placement. Not this one – and not only because it’s shown on the BBC, historic producers of children’s drama that values young minds for their creative, and not their consumer, potential.
His Dark Materials exists to spark imaginations and excite debate about life’s most profound questions. It talks down to no-one, is accessible to everyone, and passes on a message that’s fundamental to everything fiction and drama are: tell stories. Because stories can be a key turned in a prison door lock, and a jolt of shared experience that makes the listener bolder. As bold as Will and Lyra, who listened to a story and saved the worlds.

When Philip Pullman published The Amber Spyglass in 2000, it was hailed as a landmark of children’s literature. The 500-page tome was the first novel for children to be longlisted for the Booker prize; a remarkable recognition of what the author had achieved with the His Dark Materials trilogy, which ended with that book. Now it arrives on screens as the third and final part of the BBC’s adaptation of the series, complete with metaphysical musings on life and death, heaven and hell.
As the story resumes, Will (Amir Wilson) is searching for Lyra (Dafne Keen), unaware that her tricksy mother, Marisa Coulter (Ruth Wilson), has her drugged and imprisoned. Mary Malone (Simone Kirby) is on the run through the dimensions, eventually rocking up in the land of the mulefa (strange wheeled beasts that the production designers clearly had great fun rendering). Lyra and Will are together again, but where do they go from here?
On His Dark Materials Season 3 Episode 3, the subtle knife is re-forged, but some things are so broken they can never be fixed.
Lyra is desperate to atone for the sins of her father by rescuing Roger. In her quest to go to the land of the dead and fully intending to return, she feels like more of a Jesus figure than Eve.
Her motivations for seeing Roger still aren't entirely clear. Does she really think she can bring him back? Or does she just want to apologize?
Nobody seems to understand why Lyra is doing it, not Will or Iorek. Roger has been a pull for her throughout this entire series, but what exactly does she plan to do when she sees him again?
All Will knows is that Lyra will be forever lost without him, and...

Warning: this review contains spoilers.
Talk about being careful what you wish for. So, says His Dark Materials, you found the previous two episodes so plot-heavy they lacked a bit of emotion? Wallop. Have a scene so painful you’ll never again be able to board a boat without thinking of the girl who left her soul behind.
Pan shrinking from the pain of rejection as Lyra walked away from him was almost too much to bear. As were his whimpers when he padded up and down the edge of that jetty, and Lyra’s agonised yells as her boat was pulled through the water, away from that part of her. It’s always been Lyra and Pan, since the very first time we met them. Now, it’s Lyra alone, on this final journey.
Even if Pan didn’t understand the sacrifice Lyra made for Roger, the viewers did.

James McAvoy has said that two authors have said he was miscast in adaptations of their work.
In a new interview, the actor, 43, revealed that not all writers that he has worked with have been happy to see him cast in film or TV adaptations of their work.
McAvoy stars as Asriel in the BBC adaptation of Philip Pullman’s books His Dark Materials. Season four will be released on 18 December.
Speaking ahead of the fourth season’s release, McAvoy told The Guardian that he had never spoken to Pullman because he was worried the actor would say: ‘“Hmmm, you’re not really my Asriel!’”
McAvoy went on to say: “I’ve had that with a writer, and it’s just not nice. I’ve had that with two writers, actually.”
Asked for the names of which authors disapproved of casting, McAvoy said it was not Irvine Welsh or Stephen King.

Much like Philip Pullman's original novel trilogy, "His Dark Materials" started off playing things close to the vest, so far as it concerns Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) and his endgame. Come season 3, however, the show is done hiding Asriel's true mission and its actual plot behind vaguely religious metaphors. Lyra's bad dad is on a mission to literally slay God in a retelling of John Milton's "Paradise Lost" that features angels, weapons capable of cutting the very fabric of reality, and, most importantly of all, talking polar bears.
Initially, the plan was to bring viewers up to speed on Asriel's doings since the season 1 finale — you know, that whole thing where he sacrificed Lyra's poor friend Roger to create a bridge to another world — with an episode centered on the character in season 2. This one-off outing was penned by head writer Jack Thorne and would've included brand-new...

The stakes have never been higher as we begin the final season of this epic fantasy saga.
On His Dark Materials Season 3 Episode 1, the stage is set for an adventure that will span many worlds.
It has been two years since the cliffhanger ending of Season 2.
When we last saw Lyra, she had been abducted by her mother, Mrs. Coulter. Now, Lyra is being held against her will, drugged.
Mrs. Coulter will never win mother of the year, but she will do all she can to protect her daughter -- and only her daughter -- from the Magisterium.
All these men after you, I tell you, it’ll never change.

Ruth Wilson has always been an indomitable force as Mrs. Coulter. She's a deeply repressed woman. Notice how her daemon cannot (or will not) speak to her.

Fans of Philip Pullman's classic book series "His Dark Materials" have been through a lot. Originally published in 1995, the fantasy saga didn't see a big screen adaptation until 2007. Chris Weitz's "The Golden Compass" got mixed reviews and failed to capture the magic of Pullman's text -- plus, it cut out some of the novel's more pointed religious commentary. It's no surprise, then, that fans of the Pullman books can be a bit precious about making sure the latest on-screen adaptation, the BBC and HBO Max series "His Dark Materials," hews close to the text.
Those fans apparently include one of the show's actors himself. James McAvoy spoke with /Film's Jamie Gerber ahead of the show's third season, and explained that on set, he was willing to go to bat for Pullman's novels to make sure the source material was adapted correctly. After two long years, the adaptation of Philip Pullman’s riveting fantasy series His Dark Materials returns to HBO for its wrap-up third season. There are eight episodes airing two each Monday, premiering on December 5. The final season is emotional, philosophical, and action-filled and offers lots of answers and climatic moments starting with Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) gathering an army to take down the Kingdom of Heaven and its regent Metatron (Alex Hassell), whose repressive minions rule the show’s multiverse. McAvoy and star actors Ruth Wilson (Marisa Coulter), Dafne Keen (Lyra), and Amir Wilson (who plays Will) and executive producers Jane Tranter and Dan McCulloch spoke about the season with TV Insider. McAvoy previews that this season, the obsessed Asriel’s goals are “revolution and the emancipation of the human spirit from the oppressive institutional forces of moral judgment.” Also: “multiverse domination and complete submission, ” he playfully adds, mocking his narcissistic character.

After a two year wait, "His Dark Materials" finally returns to HBO tonight. The series, which is based on Philip Pullman's trilogy, is back for its third and final season, and it looks to be the most epic one yet. Fans of the books may have an idea of what's coming, but there will still be some surprises in store as things come to a head. What began as a coming of age tale about a young girl in a fantastical world has evolved into an all-out war on God to save free will itself. On the front lines of this battle are Lord Asriel and Marisa Coulter, played by James McAvoy and Ruth Wilson, respectively.
After being almost entirely absent from the show's sophomore outing, McAvoy makes his triumphant return this season. As for Wilson, she has taken her character, Mrs. Coulter, on quite a journey, making her more compelling than ever.

"His Dark Materials" has finally come into its own. It took a few stumbles and big swings, but the fantasy series has reached the heights that it was reaching for throughout its first and second seasons — and it only took a little divine intervention.
"His Dark Materials" was always a show that looked before it leapt — perhaps a fitting trait considering its notoriously brash heroine, Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen). It was eager to leave behind the YA trappings of "The Golden Compass" with its first season, to the detriment of the show's pacing and its own protagonist's character arc, with a vast scope and crowded ensemble threatening to overshadow poor Lyra. It was eager to establish itself as an adult fantasy show in the wake of the end of "Game of Thrones," to the detriment of the story's own inimitable qualities. And it was eager to give more screentime to its biggest star James McAvoy,...

What’s the old saying, ‘man plans and the Authority laughs’? Between the first announcement of BBC/HBO fantasy adaptation His Dark Materials in November 2015 and the arrival of its final season in December 2022, a great many plans were forced to change. 2020’s multiple Covid-19 lockdowns left the third season’s filming schedule up in the air, and when it came back down again not everything – or everyone – was in the same place.

After a murderous and revelatory season 2 finale, "His Dark Materials" enters its endgame by preparing for an all-out war. The series, based on the trilogy of novels of the same name by Philip Pullman (that were heavily inspired by John Milton's epic "Paradise Lost"), is ending with its upcoming third season, but the show is making sure to end on a high note.

The action-packed final season of “His Dark Materials” will debut its first two episodes in a back-to-back broadcast on HBO Dec. 5, according to a teaser that premiered at New York Comic-Con. Season 3 will also be available for streaming on HBO Max.

Going into its third season, the HBO series "His Dark Materials" has angels, witches, and oppressive religious systems to contend with. But most intimidating of all, it has the monumental task of adapting the most ambitious and lavish book of the series, "The Amber Spyglass."

"There are forces out there, Lyra, that you can't begin to understand."
So says everyone's favorite bad mother, Marisa Coulter (Ruth Wilson), at the start of the long-awaited trailer for "His Dark Materials" season 3. The promo makes good on that promise, too, showing the series' heroes Lyra (Dafne Keen) and Will (Amir Wilson) getting caught up in the middle of a war between Lyra's equally bad dad Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) and all the powers at the Authority's disposal. Also, there are angels, some familiar witches, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby (!), who's (sorta?) back from the dead after his tragic demise at the end of season 2.
All this and more awaits us in season 3, which adapts the third and final entry in Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" novel trilogy "The Amber Spyglass," aka the weirdest chapter in Pullman's subversive re-imagining of John Milton's epic poem "Paradise Lost.

It’s been two long years since HBO’s His Dark Materials season two premiered and, finally, the network has confirmed season three will debut on December 5, 2022. Stars from the series – James McAvoy, Amir Wilson, and Dafne Keen (via Zoom) – welcomed fans back to the world of His Dark Materials during a panel at the 2022 New York Comic Con. Executive producers Dan McCulloch and Jane Tranter also participated, and it was Tranter who started things off by providing a brief recap of where season two left off.
“It’s a tricky situation for Lyra. She is in a wooden box with Pan, with Mrs. Coulter sailing across the sea. To where? We don’t yet know. Lord Asriel is summoning angels and appears to be on the start of his great journey – his great quest. Will has just experienced the...

It’s the news fans have been waiting to hear: the BBC/HBO adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials is confirmed as returning for a third and final season to complete the original trilogy. Filming on a new eight-episode season adapting The Amber Spyglass will begin in 2021.
The announcement was made after the second season had aired its last episode in the UK, but ahead of the US broadcast (which is a week later than on the BBC), meaning American fans will be able to rest easier watching the finale in the knowledge that Lyra and co. are definitely returning.
[Season two finale spoilers ahead] Season three will be based on The Amber Spyglass, which sees Lyra held captive by her mother Mrs Coulter, who’s attempting to stop her daughter from fulfilling the Witches’ prophecy and changing the fates of the parallel realms forever. Lord Asriel will continue to raise an army...

Warning: contains spoilers for His Dark Materials season two and The Amber Spyglass
That’s the lid closed on season two. Like Lyra, His Dark Materials is all packed away for the time being. The episode’s closing scene showed our hero kidnapped and drugged and stashed in a steamer trunk by her mother, who was promising to take her somewhere safe. Having learned that Lyra was destined to be the new Eve – the fate of every world resting on a choice she was foretold to make – Mrs Coulter vowed to stop her daughter from bringing about another Fall. She would protect Lyra and thereby save humanity from Dust and sin.
In another realm, Lyra’s father was preparing to take on the Authority. Unaware of the prophecy surrounding his daughter, Asriel would take an opposite view to his ex-lover. Believing that Dust and ‘sin’ are consciousness and free will,...

(Spoilers Follow For Season One)
Keen plays Lyra Belacqua, an orphan girl who was raised at Jordan College in an alternate world where all humans have animal companions called daemons, which are manifestations of the human soul. His Dark Materials series one goes out with a bang and the promise of even better to come. Spoilers ahead…
This His Dark Materials review contains spoilers.
His Dark Materials Episode 8
Before anything else, the feet have to be right. Whether you’re performing a dance move or throwing a jab, everything springs from the feet. In this finale, His Dark Materials was able to pull off balletic pirouettes and land every punch, all because, months ago, it put itself in a solid stance by casting the remarkable Dafne Keen.
Keen is remarkable. She has been throughout, but she’s especially so in this finale. Episode eight gave her a series of long, quiet, emotional two-handers – the kind of scenes that leave an actor nowhere to hide. Through clever editing and canny direction, there are tricks to make young actors look good. Fleeting moments can be captured...

Lyra takes the fight to the North in the latest thrilling, action-packed His Dark Materials episode. Spoilers in our review…
This His Dark Materials review contains spoilers for "Bolvangar." It originally ran on Den of Geek UK.
Roger’s hero speech. Ma Costa’s revenge. Lyra karate-kicking the fire alarm. Serafina cutting a magical swathe through the enemy. The mother-daughter-monkey-rage-scream through the locked door. Iorek’s arrival. Lee’s gunshot. The guillotine meltdown… This episode had so many high points and so much rousing action that it’s a real credit to the writing, performance and direction that its most gripping scene was also its quietest: Lyra and Mrs Coulter’s reunion.
The careful work done to build Mrs Coulter’s character in episode two - the smiling, still face muzzling her violent rage, the extreme self-regard masking abject self-hatred - paid off beautifully here. Mrs Coulter...

We’re roughly halfway through His Dark Materials’ first season now. Time for some serious voice-over exposition, don’t you think?
“Witches hear the immortal whispers of those who pass between the worlds,” intones an unidentified voice at the start of the fantasy epic’s latest episode (“The Lost Boy”). “They speak of a child who is destined to bring the end of destiny.” That would be our girl, Lyra Belacqua. “If told what she must do, she will fail. But she won’t walk alone.” Is her faithful companion that giant polar bear,...

Our genre television podcast hosts discuss the wonderful worldbuilding and colorful characters in HBO's adaptation of His Dark Materials.
HBO has done a much better job of adapting Philip Pullman’s fantasy adventure series His Dark Materials than Hollywood did for 2007’s The Golden Compass, and we’ve been enjoying watching Lyra Belacqua work through the mystery of the missing children in an alternate world ruled by a restrictive theocracy. It’s hard not to be charmed by the concept of each human having their own familiar-like daemon as their animal companion, and the world-building is rich with witches, Gyptians, and armored bears.
As is usual for the show topics on Sci Fi Fidelity, we discuss the first two episodes of the series and share what we think of the established character and central conflict. At first, there were some reservations that His Dark...

His Dark Materials Episode 3
In material terms, His Dark Materials Episode 3 didn’t move us very far forward. Like a docked boat, Lyra’s journey stalled in one place while other characters were frustrated in their various searches. By the end of the hour, Lord Boreal was still on the trail of Stannislaus Grumann/Col. John Parry, Mrs. Coulter was still on the trail of Lyra (the spy flies only telling her what the Magisterium already knew - that Lyra and the alethiometer were with the Gyptians), and - Benjamin and Tony’s break-in having failed to uncover the location of the Northern station - the Gyptians were still on...

Question: What does your daemon look like? Is it a ferret, a fox, a monkey, a regal snow leopard? In the world of His Dark Materials, the joint BBC-HBO adaptation of Phillip Pullman’s hugely acclaimed young-adult fantasy series, everybody’s got a literal spirit animal — magical creatures called “daemons” that function like having an external animal-shaped soul you can run around with and talk to. As a way to engage the audience, daemons rank right up there with Harry Potter’s Gryffindor-to-Hufflepuff sorting matrix, or Game of Thrones‘ great houses,...

Lyra Belacqua, the young heroine of His Dark Materials, spends a lot of time in the new HBO fantasy epic asking adults to explain what is happening to her and those around her, and why. The adults either try to change the subject or awkwardly tell Lyra that she’s not ready to know yet.
“Frustrating as it may seem, that’s not a question for me to answer,” one tells her. “I can’t ask you to trust us, Lyra. I can only hope we’ll earn your trust.

In 2019, the way women are represented in movies and on television shows has come a long way - but there is definitely a long way to go as well. Luckily, HBO is doing its part this Fall with His Dark Materials, a new fantasy adventure series starring Dafne Keen, Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Keen plays Lyra Belacqua, the heroine of Philip Pullman's epic trilogy set in a parallel universe where she finds herself embroiled in a cosmic war between the rigid, ancient Magisterium authority and the supporters of the Republic of Heaven, a concept that people can live good lives without the control of the Magisterium. Lyra becomes a pivotal figure in this battle, coming of age as she tries to help her loved ones and figure out who she is at the same time.
