Shoots, da kine “Rescue Hi-Surf” is one lucky TV show, brah. Fox just gave it the cherry timeslot after Super Bowl Lix on Feb. 9, 2025. That’s a big vote of confidence for the freshman drama, which is set to premiere this fall on Monday nights at 9 p.m. Et, after “9-1-1: Lone Star.”
Although the impact of the Super Bowl lead-out has varied over the years, it proved to be a huge boon this year to CBS, which launched “Tracker” after Super Bowl Lviii on Feb. 11 and watched that drama turn into a big hit. The last time Fox aired the Super Bowl, in 2023, it ran an episode of its hit food competition series “Next Level Chef.” And in 2020, Fox aired an episode of another unscripted program, “The Masked Singer.”
Fox last ran a scripted program behind the Super Bowl in 2017, when the network launched the series premiere of “24: Legacy,...

Fox last month doubled down on its commitment to Rescue: Hi-Surf, picking up seven additional episodes of the lifeguard drama to bring its first season to 19 episodes. The network now is tripling down on the John Wells Productions series by giving it the biggest platform in television, a berth following the 2025 Super Bowl.
A special episode of Rescue Hi-Surf will air on Feb. 9 after Fox Sports’ presentation of Super Bowl Lix, the network announced Monday morning, ahead of its upfront presentation.
This will be the first time in eight years that Fox will give the post-Super Bowl slot to a scripted series; the last two times the network carried the big game, it went with the unscripted The Masked Singer and Next Level Chef as lead-outs.

It’s back to the beach for Shawn Hatosy. The actor, best known for playing Andrew “Pope” Cody on TNT’s Animal Kingdom, is joining the cast of Fox’s Rescue: Hi-Surf in a recurring role, our sister site Deadline reports.

Exclusive: Fox is doubling down on its commitment to Rescue: Hi-Surf, picking up seven additional episodes of the Hawaii-set lifeguard drama from Warner Bros. Television, Fox Entertainment and John Wells Productions. The back order brings Rescue Hi-Surf‘s first season, which will air in 2024-25, to 19 episodes.
The network has been high on the project — which marks ER and The West Wing alum Wells’ broadcast return — from the get-go, giving it a straight-to-series order last April and envisioning it as a potential franchise.

The major broadcast networks are trying very hard this year to do what they do best – create franchise drama series built around the adventures of larger-than-life characters.
Kathy Bates, Kaitlin Olson, Carrie Preston and Shanola Hampton are among the female actors hoping to click as distinctive protagonists with new series in the 2023-24 season. Bates will bring to life a next-generation “Matlock,” while Preston limns a new chapter for Elsbeth Tascioni, the attorney character she has played on and off on CBS’ “The Good Wife” and Paramount+’s “The Good Fight” since 2010.
This is good news for the hundreds of international television buyers heading to Los Angeles for next week’s LA Screenings market. Another welcome development is that the largest media congloms are now on a big push to reopen their doors to third-party buyers, after a few years of holding back the biggest shows for in-house streaming services.

Updated: The network upfronts are once again front-and-center for the television industry as major players gather in New York May 15-17 for the springtime ritual of presenting programming plans for the upcoming TV season.
Upfronts are always a hectic time, but this year it’s even more so because of the writers strike that began May 2. Writers and many actors are sitting out the upfront presentations in solidarity with the Writers Guild of America. The promise of WGA pickets surrounding all major events spurred Netflix to make a hasty decision to switch to a virtual presentation rather than an in-person event at the company’s Paris Theater.
As content chiefs outline their plans for the 2022-2023 television season, here is a running list of new drama and comedy series orders handed out by ABC, Disney, CBS, Warner Bros. Discovery, NBC, Fox, the CW and other major players in the upfront.

Animal Kingdom is over, yes. But is it over and also done with? As the dust has settled in the wake of the TNT drama’s series finale (recapped in full here), quite a number of fans have found themselves hankering for a spinoff in which Jake Weary’s Deran strikes back at treacherous nephew J (Finn Cole). Could we actually get one?
“I haven’t heard anything,” showrunner Daniele Nathanson tells TVLine. “Those decisions are made above me. But I think the ending is supposed to feel like an ending.”

Given how displeased Ellen Barkin had seemed to be to have been killed off Animal Kingdom in the TNT drama’s penultimate Season 4 episode, it wasn’t exactly a surprise that she didn’t return for Sunday’s series finale. What was a surprise, however, was that the show didn’t use any flashbacks of her version of Smurf, even as oldest son Pope was grappling with his culpability in twin sister Julia’s downfall. How come?
“There had been some concepts of how to introduce Smurf [into the episode],” showrunner Daniele Nathanson tells TVLine. And any way you slice it, “the show has always been about Smurf.

Sunday’s series finale of Animal Kingdom left Jake Weary’s Deran on the lowest of low notes. Smurf’s youngest son had been double-crossed by nephew J, beloved brother Craig had been fatally shot in a convenience-store holdup, and eventually, Deran would have to find out that oldest sibling Pope had also perished. But the end of the show isn’t necessarily the end of the character’s story, EP Daniele Nathanson tells TVLine.

The Final Score is among us as the landmark series Animal Kingdom comes to an end.
After six seasons of thrills, action, heists, surfing, brawls, badassery, and so much more, we'll say goodbye to the Codys, ending the chapter of this beloved summer hit series with Animal Kingdom Season 6 Episode 13.
The Codys have ruled our hearts and reigned supreme for six incredible seasons. But every chapter must come to its close.
And we can confirm that the series finale will have you on the edge of your seats from the opening all the way to the end credits.
They left everything on the floor with some tremendous and perfectly choreographed action sequences, emotionally wrought performances, and a few surprises.
You can anticipate a finale that delivers on the emotional notes every bit as much as the adrenaline-fueled action, brings character arcs to an organic end, and follows through in its execution of the series' storytelling.

In Sunday’s episode (recapped in full here), he not only stepped up, he walked all over J to the point that his grandkids are gonna be born with footprints on ‘em. What got into Deran? If the best-laid plans can go awry, then certainly, so can things that weren’t remotely planned — like the baby that Animal Kingdom’s Craig and Renn find themselves parenting in Season 5 of the TNT hit (Sundays, 9/8c). “They’re sort of adjusting to this really on the fly,” showrunner Daniele Nathanson tells TVLine.
To put it mildly, it won’t be easy. For one thing, “Renn wants to keep certain aspects of her life — like what she does for a living,” the EP teases. “And that’s going to be a conflict, because from her Pov, yes, she has a kid,...

File the Season 5 premiere of Animal Kingdom under “business as unusual.” When the pulse-pounding TNT drama returns Sunday at 9/8c, the uneasy alliance that seemed to have been formed between J and his Uncle Pope at the end of Season 4 is… well, not going according to plan. Not J’s plan, anyway.
“It doesn’t evolve as he intended,” showrunner Daniele Nathanson tells TVLine, adding that viewers should “remember there are two other guys in the family, and with Smurf gone, it releases a lot of the constraints on the old power dynamic.”

TNT’s popular crime drama Animal Kingdom has set an end date. Ahead of the Season 5 premiere, the network has renewed the series for a sixth and final season.
I hear the cast and crew were notified in November about the pending pickup of Season 6, which is eying a February production start. Season five of the show, which stars Shawn Hatosy, Ben Robson, Jake Weary, Finn Cole, Leila George, Rigo Sanchez and Jon Beavers, will premiere this summer on TNT. (see key art on left)
With Animal Kingdom and Claws both heading toward the end of their runs, Snowpiercer remains the only ongoing scripted series on TNT, which has been shifting its programming focus to unscripted fare to compliment the WarnerMedia network’s sports slate.
A consistent ratings performer and strong younger viewers draw, Animal Kingdom reached 27 million viewers in Season 4 across all platforms, with the premiere retaining its audience...
