When The WB’s Felicity closed out its first season, fans were left to wonder all summer about which love interest Keri Russell’s title character had chosen to pursue.
And the show’s writers, it turns out, were just as clueless as the audience regarding Felicity’s momentous decision between Ben Covington (Scott Speedman) and Noel Crane (Scott Foley).

Despite their rom com-heavy résumés, Anne Hathaway and actor-turned-director Michael Showalter had never met prior to collaborating on the May-December love story “The Idea of You,” which bows May 2 on Amazon Prime Video. Unless you count that one time at Beverly Hills’ Gucci Osteria, which in 2022 was the site of a dinner party to celebrate Jessica Chastain’s Oscar nomination for the Showalter-directed film “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”
“I wanted to talk to Anne, but I was too embarrassed,” Showalter recalls of the soiree. “The path of least resistance is to just not talk to anybody.” Adds Hathaway with a chuckle: “I couldn’t figure out how to breach my wall of shyness.”
Months later, Hathaway conquered her timidity when she recruited Showalter to co-write and direct “The Idea of You,” in which the star of “The Devil Wears Prada” and “The Princess Diaries” portrays a 40-year-old single mother...

A24 has won yet another major bidding war.
This time, the indie studio outbid stiff competition for the rights to turn true-crime podcast The Girlfriends, from iHeartPodcasts and Novel, into a television series. The weekly podcast, which launched in the summer, tells the real-life story of a group of women who band together to put a murderous ex behind bars. And though details of the TV version are being kept under wraps, Michael Showalter and his Semi-Formal Productions are already attached.
Showalter, who’s on a hot streak with a string of recent successes across TV (The Dropout) and film (The Eyes of Tammy Faye), is set to direct, with Semi-Formal partner Jordana Mollick executive producing. She’ll be joined by fellow EPs Conal Byrne, Will Pearson and Carrie Lieberman of iHeartPodcasts, and Julia Bromberg and Neil Krishnan of Novel.

Awards season never really ends, which means this year’s Oscar-nominated movies are hitting streaming services now to build anticipation before the big night. Todd Field’s Best Picture nominee “TÁR” arrived on Peacock last week, and you should definitely check it out there if you missed it in theaters. (Here is how to watch “Tar” online.)
But unfortunately, there are no currently nominated films or likely future contenders new to streaming this week. But we’ve rounded up some movies that began streaming in the past week or this weekend that have something of interest to awards-watchers.
The contender to watch this weekend: “Spoiler Alert,” Peacock
This sad but uplifting romantic drama comes to streaming after a low-key theatrical run. It’s based on the memoir “Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies” by entertainment journalist and TVLine founder Michael Ausiello. (TVLine and Gold Derby are both owned by Penske Media Corporation.

Ben Aldridge came out as gay not even three years ago with a post on Instagram.
“The journey to pride was a long one for me,” he wrote alongside vintage photos of gay rights protests as well as a video of him playfully kissing another man on the cheek. “I love the LGBTQ+ community and am incredibly proud and thankful to be a part of it. So much won. So much more to fight for. #pride.”
During an appearance on this week’s “Just for Variety,” I asked the British actor what was going through his mind when he hit the post button.
“Oh, you’re going to make me cry,” he said. “It sounds dramatic, but I could just breathe easier. I underestimated how significant that was to me. I really did. I thought, it’s not that I’d played it down, but I didn’t know what...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
It’s not every day that an action movie stars an 80-year- old. But leave it to octogenarian Harrison Ford to return as Indiana Jones in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” the fifth installment of the iconic franchise.
While moviegoers may be surprised to see Ford return four decades after making the first film, the actor has long felt he’d be back. “I always wanted to do it,” he told me at the premiere of his Apple TV+ comedy series “Shrinking.” “I wanted to do the rest of the story to see the end of his career.”
But even Ford has his limits. He insists he’s hung up Indy’s fedora and bullwhip for good: “It’s the last time for me.”

2022 was something of a landmark year for mainstream queer cinema. Films like "Fire Island," "Crush," and "Anything's Possible" painted a far more authentic and inclusive mosaic of the 2Slgbtq+ community than the movies with mostly white cisgender casts -- many of which, as moving as they are, feature straight actors playing queer characters -- that have come before them, while at the same time broadening their focus beyond the typical queer issues and "tragic" stories Hollywood typically fixates on. Of course, there's always going to be room for fresh stories centered on plain ol' white queer guys, and 2022 had us covered there too, with romantic dramedies like "Bros" and "Spoiler Alert."
The latter movie, which flew under a lot of people's radars judging by the box office returns, is based on Michael Ausiello's 2017 memoir "Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies" and explores the real-life romance between its author (played by...

As the saying goes, I’m not mad at these movies as much as I expected much, much better from the artists involved. In alphabetical order:
Amsterdam
I’ve been onboard for David O. Russell’s wildest swings over the course of his career (Team “I Heart Huckabee’s” for life), and a story about a real-life attempted fascist coup in the United States certainly couldn’t be more timely. But boy, was this all-star tonal pile-up the hottest of messes that not all of the production design in the world could save.
“Avatar: The Way of Water”: Whatever script shortcomings the first movie had – and it had them – seeing the movie projected in 3D was an immersive experience that felt absolutely new. (The magic of Pandora remained stunning even in the 2022 reissue.) But with high-frame-rate and other visual choices reducing this sequel into pixelated cacophony, the movie’s one reason to exist,...

Focus Features’ tearjerker “Spoiler Alert” is now open nationwide, and audiences everywhere are driving Kleenex stock through the roof. Based on TVLine founder Michael Ausiello‘s 2017 memoir “Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies,” the film is directed by Michael Showalter and it may or may not be the latest installment in the “Smurfs” movie series (you’ll have to watch it and decide for yourself). In all seriousness, “Spoiler Alert” details the ups and downs of Ausiello’s relationship with Kit Cowan, which tragically ends after Cowan passes away from neuroendocrine cancer.
“Spoiler Alert” reviews are pouring in at Rotten Tomatoes, where it currently has an 82 critics score and a 96 audience score. What happens when there’s no wide theatrical releases and it’s the holiday season as we emerge from the pandemic? Why you get the second lowest box office weekend of the year at 37.2M. We’ll see if Saturday night business is so bad that that this weekend becomes the lowest of 2022, unseating that of Jan. 28-30 when all movies grossed 34.87M per Comscore. Top pic this weekend is of course the fifth go-around of Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever which is estimated to make 11M. Yesterday with 2.8M, the Ryan Coogler movie crossed the four century mark with a running cume of 401.55M, pacing 5 ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness over 29 days.

Starring in a Hallmark Christmas movie today isn’t much different than appearing in Mean Girls 18 years ago, says star Jonathan Bennett: just like he did with Lindsay Lohan in 2004, he “meet cutes” an attractive single in a rom-com type setting in The Holiday Sitter.
This time, however, Bennett is making a little history: the movie debuting Dec. 11 at 8. p.m. marks the first time a Hallmark holiday flick revolves around a same-sex couple. In this case, Bennett plays a confirmed bachelor named Sam who agrees to watch his teen nephew and young niece while their parents are away. He ends up falling for Jason (George Krissa), an easy-on-the-eyes neighbor who’s far more adept at caring for kids.
“We’re doing all the classic things that we love in Hallmark movies,” Bennett tells Deadline. “We’re doing the tropes that we’ve come to love and expect from watching Hallmark movies.

Michael Ausiello (Jim Parsons) was an entertainment journalist at TV Guide when he first locked eyes with photographer Kit Cowan (Ben Aldridge) across a heatwave of neon-clad partygoers in a New York City bar in 2001. In "Spoiler Alert," an intimate - and, at times, whimsical - retelling of their real-life love story, Michael and Kit spend 14 years living out their rom-com romance. As viewers, we witness everything from their first kiss (over cocktails on a kaleidoscopic dance floor) to the first time Michael meets Kit's parents, Marilyn Cowan (Sally Field) and Bob Cowan (Bill Irwin).
The film is based on Ausiello's own 2017 memoir, "Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies," which, spoiler alert, details the 11-month stretch from Kit's terminal-cancer diagnosis to when he dies. "[This role] allowed me to work in a way that I never had before. And I think that's to do with tapping into something authentic and emotional,...

Is it better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all? This is the core question of "Spoiler Alert," the queer romantic drama and biographical film, adapted from the memoir "Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies" by Michael Ausiello. Jim Parsons stars as Michael, a dorky TV writer (ouch — I'm in this film and I don't like it) who, thanks to a chance encounter, meets the love of his life, Kit Cowan (Ben Aldridge). As the relationship grows, the two encounter the kinds of problems unique to members of the gay community. It's all very sweet, but there's a catch: The very first scene of the film tells us Kit dies in the end.
The film was directed by Michael Showalter, who is probably best known for writing and starring in "Wet Hot American Summer" and directing "The Big Sick" and last year's "The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

It’s been almost two months since we’ve had a weekend as bad as the one we’re about to have, but at least “Black Panther 2″ should keep its run going by enjoying its fifth and final weekend at #1. Next week will offer a light at the end of the horizon with James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” opening, in hopes of getting people back into theaters. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This Friday, Focus Features is expanding the dramatic “Spoiler Alert,” starring Jim Parsons and Ben Aldrich, into over 600 theaters, after platforming in six theaters in New York, L.A., and San Francisco, but that’s really the only new-ish wide release. Directed by Michael Showalter and written by TV Line’s Michael Ausiello, the romantic drama only made 85,000 this past weekend. Sure, I know that Valentine’s Day is a couple of months away, but romance can be found, or at least blossom, during the holiday season at year’s end. Plus it’s awards time for the movie studios, so why not release a love story based on an acclaimed recent memoir? And they’re “hedging their bet” since its cast includes a lauded sitcom TV star and a two-time Oscar winner. Plus its director is a friend of the “golden guy” as he’s helped to guide some collaborators to big wins (note the “b” word). Now, I could tell you much more, but that would require a big Spoiler Alert.

It would be easy to fill this column with worthwhile movies that recently played theaters or notable TV shows making their return, but there’s too much interesting stuff to waste space on the familiar. So let’s get that out of the way up top.
Netflix viewers will be able to catch up with Bardo, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, and White Noise, all of which arrive on the service after brief theatrical runs.

Focus Features’ Spoiler Alert opened on six screens to an estimated 85k, or 14k per theater, in a crowded arthouse market. Strong exit polls and word of mouth – 94 in the top two boxes – could help built out this movie, which will likely be more audience-focused than awards-buzz driven.
“We are encouraged to see Spoiler Alert playing great and connecting with audiences,” said Focus distribution chief Lisa Bunnell. “We expect the film to broaden its audience and reach as we begin our national expansion.” The Michael Showalter pic based on Michael Ausiello’s memoir ‘Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies’ and staring Jim Parsons, Ben Aldridge and Sally Field expands Dec. 9.

“Spoiler Alert” (Universal), based on Michael Ausiello’s poignant memoir, debuted in six theaters and provided a spark for the specialized market. It took in 85,000 — at the higher end for this season. That’s enough to justify the brief platform before it expands to a multi-hundred theater run this Friday.
Among traditional specialized titles, we’re confronting a discomfiting reality: This once-vibrant adult audience isn’t showing up, but non-traditional releases are thriving. Fathom Events now boasts two out-of-nowhere successes in three weeks. “I Heard the Bells,” about composer of the classic Christmas carol took in nearly 2.6 million for four days on 474 theaters for #7 overall. And its presentation of two episodes of “The Chosen Season 3” has taken in over 14 million. That’s more than any of the plethora of awards-contenders and others we list below, most of which had wider releases.

Jim Parsons stars as Michael Ausiello in director Michael Showalter’s Spoiler Alert, a Focus Features release.
Credit: Linda Källérus / © 2022 Focus Features LLC. In an interesting twist of fate, Jim Parsons is playing a real-life character who — on many occasions — wrote about Jim Parsons. In the film Spoiler Alert, he stars as journalist Michael Ausiello, who covered Parsons’s The Big Bang Theory on a regular basis for his TVLine.com website. But the film doesn’t focus on his work. Instead, it’s about the relationship between Ausiello and his partner/spouse, who is facing his mortality after a terminal cancer diagnosis. Parsons says the movie, based on Ausiello’s memoir, is an important one because it focuses on a part of humanity that we all have to face. A platoon of titles hits the specialty circuit this weekend, getting in ahead of steamroller Avatar: Way of Water and the year-end deadline for Oscar eligibility. This is a soul-searching, what-lies-ahead moment for a market still much too inconsistent for comfort, but that can be pondered later. At the moment, indie distributors are quite busy “with all these movies, and these plans to release theatrically. We are not going anywhere,” said one executive.
The Gotham Awards earlier this were were a shot of goodwill. Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski recalled “the mandate that all of us share in the specialty film business” at the ceremony in NYC, kicking off awards season.

Plot: Spoiler Alert tells the love story of Michael Ausiello and Kit Cowan and the heartbreaking turn it takes with Kit’s battle with terminal cancer.
Review: Tragedy and romance go hand in hand in Hollywood. From the Golden Age on, the lovestruck couple facing impossible odds can often connect with audiences on a deeply emotional level. When you look at films like Beaches or Steel Magnolias, the appeal is the drama and the cast. And now, in the new movie Spoiler Alert, we have a romantic tale that is very aware of previous ones that have come before it. The film stars Jim Parsons and Ben Aldridge as two men who fall deeply in love and share their life together before tragedy comes calling. It’s a heartfelt film with fine performances from the two leads and co-stars, Sally Field and Bill Irwin.
Michael Ausiello (Parsons) is a nice guy who writes about television.

Spoiler Alert may not be what you’d expect from the title. However, it may be the movie for you if you appreciate love stories that satisfyingly deal with humor and heartbreak. The film stars Jim Parsons and Ben Aldridge as two people who fall deeply in love, only for one to face a severe illness. It’s a funny, warm, insightful love story featuring inspired performances from Sally Field and Bill Irwin. And it is also based on the novel by Michael Ausiello, who happened to live this real-life love story. It’s a tender, engaging film that nicely honors a sweet and heartbreaking romance.

Jim Parsons is learning to like control. For nearly his entire career, the actor best known for a 12-season run starring on The Big Bang Theory has been almost exclusively invested in delivering the best performances possible. Even after one of those massive deals to stay put at the late sitcom birthed a shingle, That’s Wonderful Productions, navigating the off-camera stuff often felt like work better suited to someone else. The company has thrived: The Big Bang spinoff Young Sheldon recently hit 100 episodes, the comedy Call Me Kat has been a rare scripted success at Fox, and Netflix’s Special proved a critical darling. But its latest project, in which Parsons also stars, signals a shift. “Spoiler Alert has changed everything,” he says of the movie, out in theaters Dec. 2 via Focus Features and based on Michael Ausiello’s memoir about losing his partner to cancer.

Jim Parsons cried a lot while reading “Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies: A Memoir of Love, Loss and Other Four-Letter Words,” entertainment journalist Michael Ausiello’s 2017 book about his late husband Kit Cowan’s battle with cancer.
“My husband watched me read it, which means he watched me sob through it. And he said, ‘Do you think it would make a good movie?’ I said, ‘I don’t know,’” Parsons tells me on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. “And he read it, and he said, ‘I think it would.’”
Fast forward to today: Focus Features’ “Spoiler Alert,” directed by Michael Showalter and in theaters on Dec. 2, stars Parsons as Ausiello (whom I’ve known for a couple of decades and is editor-in-chief of Variety’s sibling outlet TVLine) and fellow queer actor Ben Aldridge (“Fleabag”) as Kit. Rounding out the cast are Sally Field and Bill Irwin as Cowan’s parents.

After three weeks at #1, it’s unlikely that “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” will have much of a problem going four weeks in a row, with only two new lower-key wide releases this week. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The widest new release is Universal’s action-comedy “Violent Night,” starring David Harbour from “Stranger Things” as a different take on Santa Claus, this one looking to protect a family from mercenary home invaders.
Although Harbour has become best known for his role as Police Chief Jim Hopper on the Netflix series, he has made a few forays into genre film releases, most notably 2019’s “Hellboy” and Marvel’s 2021 release “Black Widow.” “Hellboy” was seen as a massive bomb, only grossing 21.9 million domestically after a 12 million opening, and that was as good a test as any for Harbour as a leading man.

It’s the last month of the year, and though the holidays are very much on everyone’s minds, so is the awards season, which will start in earnest this week. Expect to see an interesting mix of family films and prestige pictures released in December, although few will make as big a mark as the highly anticipated sequel to “Avatar.” Read on for Gold Derby’s December 2022 box office preview.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” (20th Century/Disney) – Dec. 16
This December’s mega-doozy blockbuster marks the return of filmmaker James Cameron to the world of Pandora from 2009’s “Avatar.” For the longest time, it was the highest-grossing movie in North America, opening with a mere 77 million, but going on to gross 750 million domestically and 2.7 million worldwide. Although it’s doubtful that a sequel 13 years later can exceed the original’s success, we’re experiencing a year in which Tom Cruise...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
After the success of “Uncut Gems,” filmmaker brothers Josh and Benny Safdie and their star Adam Sandler have a lot to live up to with their next collaboration. The trio announced in October they were reuniting for an untitled film for Netflix.
While details about the project are under wraps, Sandler did tell me Monday at the Gotham Awards that he’s going to have a much “different look” than he’s ever had. “I can’t say that I’m gonna look that handsome in it,” Sandler said. “It’s not a handsome moment…It’s gonna be tough.”
As for the storyline, Sandler would only say, “They’re working hard. Every time I talk to them they say they are working hand.”
Sandler starred in “Uncut Gems” as a Howard Ratner, a shady New York City jeweler with a gambling addiction.

Spoiler Alert is about as funny and upbeat a film you could possibly make when the subject is the illness and death of one of the partners in the central relationship. It’s a gay Love Story with laughs, albeit with a twist, as the film challenges itself to be both amusing and emotionally involving where matters of life and death are concerned. Fortunately, it manages to more or less succeed on both counts due to its ever-ready wise-crack nature and sympathetic direction.
“I’ve always imagined that my life was like a typical romantic comedy,” announces Michael (Jim Parsons), a dweeby-but-funny New York-based sitcom writer who one Monday night uncharacteristically ventures into a New York gay club. Even more uncharacteristically, Michael meets, horses around with and ultimately brings big guy Kit (Ben Aldridge) over to his Jersey apartment, leaving an embarrassed Michael unable to hide his extensive Smurfs collection,...

Writer Michael Ausiello and actor Jim Parsons on the set of director Michael Showalter’s Spoiler Alert, a Focus Features release. Credit: David Scott Holloway / © 2022 Focus Features LLC. As Michael Ausiello and his longtime partner/spouse, Kit Cowan, were facing Cowan’s impending death from terminal cancer, neither could have imagined that their story would have made it to the big screen, with Jim Parsons playing Ausiello and Ben Aldridge co-starring as Cowan. Of course, there wouldn’t have been a film if Ausiello hadn’t first written a memoir about his experiences with Cowan. And Ausiello, who is also an executive producer on Spoiler Alert, says there wouldn’t have been a book if not for the encouragement of a fan of his writing who just happened to work in the publishing business. One of the more memorable episodes of Michael Ausiello’s 2017 memoir finds the television journalist (and obsessive) visiting the Brooklyn set of “The Americans” on the same afternoon his longtime boyfriend, photographer Kit Cowan, sees a colorectal specialist about the severe pain he was experiencing. Mere seconds before sitting down for a chat with stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, Ausiello receives a text informing him that Cowan’s doctor has found a growth; already traumatized by watching his mother die from cancer when he was a child, Ausiello jumps to the worst possible conclusion.
Time would tragically justify such catastrophizing (Ausiello’s book is called “Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies”), but for the moment, he can only sit through an interview he’d been too excited about to reschedule, his mind entirely in Manhattan as he struggles to do a job that often seemed more like a fantasy.

As a film critic, I don’t watch much television. There simply isn’t time, what with all the new movies opening each week. As for the critics and columnists who cover television, I don’t know how they do it. How do these people — folks like Michael Ausiello, editor-in-chief of TVLine (owned by Variety parent company Pmc) and author of “Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies” — manage to keep up with the sheer volume of new shows on TV, much less nurse a partner through a terminal battle with Stage 4 neuroendocrine cancer?
It’s a dream job, albeit a demanding one, for a boob tube-obsessed soul like Ausiello, though it was his private life that inspired his best piece of writing — and by extension, “The Big Sick” director Michael Showalter’s latest laugh-a-little/cry-a-little rom-com, based on Ausiello’s 2017 memoir. The tonal demands of a romantic-comedy tearjerker prove far too much to handle for director Michael Showalter in “Spoiler Alert,” an awkward and uncertain adaptation of TV critic Michael Ausiello’s memoir, which deals with the illness of Ausiello’s longterm partner Kit Cowan.
Many of the scenes here seem to have been shot in a spirit of tense desperation; the comedy doesn’t land, the romance takes too long to get going, and the tearjerking scenes are spoiled by a meta framework that makes Showalter’s job even more difficult.
“Spoiler Alert” starts with Ausiello (Jim Parsons) embracing a very sick Cowan in a hospital bed, and this leads to a flashback to their first meeting 14 years or so earlier. We see Ausiello at his job at TV Guide, where he is asked to write more about “Fear Factor” instead of “Gilmore Girls,” and then we see him out...

In his best film, 2017’s The Big Sick, director Michael Showalter showed a deft hand balancing interracial rom-com conventions with an affecting dash of hospital drama to deliver a love story distinguished by humorous, culturally specific insights and tender depth of feeling. Spoiler Alert in many ways is a queer companion piece, exploring another relationship drawn from real life, this time between gay men. The chief difference, as the title and opening scene indicate, is the outcome of the illness, pushing the new movie further into traditional weepie territory, a move acknowledged with a winking nod to Terms of Endearment.
There are elements of preciousness and quirks that can lean toward the cutesy, even if they do come directly from entertainment journalist Michael Ausiello’s memoir about his 13 years with photographer Kit Cowan. I mean, how many gay men would stick around after...

No, The Big Bang Theory was not hiding Penny’s last name in plain sight.
In the Season 2 episode “The Work Song Nanocluster,” Kaley Cuoco’s Penny places a package on her kitchen counter — and if you zoom in close enough (at the three-minute mark), you can make out a first and last name on the shipping label: Penny Teller. But as producers reveal in the new oral history The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series by Jessica Radloff (order it here), the label was supposed to be illegible.
